Author: Rudy Silva

Estate jewelry buyers are interested in several types of jewelry. It could be vintage or antique. All estate jewelry can range between inexpensive to extremely costly. While many people think that vintage and antique are similar, they are actually different.

The antique jewelry is as old as 100 years or more. Experts would like to say that anything that was created starting in 1920s and earlier is already an antique. Vintage jewelry is created in 1920s to 1980s.

Estate jewelry is pre-owned, whether the previous owner is still living does not matter. Stores selling estate jewelry may have many collections to satiate the enthusiast’s cravings for such merchandise.

Estate jewelry buyers are interested in diamond jewelry. The diamond jewelry can be loose diamonds, engagement ring, diamond earrings, diamond bracelets, diamond necklaces and diamond rings. The diamond rings can be personalized or wedding diamonds.

Besides this, jewelry stores and private individuals are interested in buying gold jewelry of all types and origins. There are jewelry made of gold from China, Taiwan, Singapore, Italy and Brazil.

Estate jewelry stores are buying Tiffany & Co., Van Cleef & Arpels, Harry Winston and Cartier jewelry. Platinum jewelry is also among the jewelry that estate jewelry buyers are interested in.

Fine watches, dental gold, scrap gold and gemstone jewelry. And silver jewelry can be seen on auction sites and on jewelry stores. They have outstanding value based on how old the jewelry is, and on what value the metal and precious stone have.

The antique estate jewelry is really the bestseller in most jewelry shops. Besides having a striking appearance, many stores prefer having precious stones such as sapphire, rubies, and diamonds in their estate jewelry section.

The Georgian jewelry is made between 1714 and 1837. Mostly, it is handmade and very rare. The designs associated with it are leaves and birds, and the jewelry includes precious stones.

After Georgian, the Victorian romantic jewelry was famous in 1850s. Jewelry made from this era was mostly solemn and sports grave designs, mainly because of the death of Queen Victoria’s husband. Because of this, the jewelry is known to be mourning type. It features heavy and dark stones such as Jet, Onyx, Amethyst and Gamet. Estate jewelry buyers are particularly looking for such precious piece.

Also from this period, the jewelry became especially creative as there were colorful designs. This jewelry had shells, colorful gemstones, and mosaics. During the late Victorian era, the jewelers experimented on diamonds, bright gemstones like peridot, sapphire and spinel. It featured star, crescent designs, and hat pins.

In industrial revolution, arts and crafts jewelry had resumed to being simple in creating patterns for jewelry, which were intricately handmade. Even so, the creations of this era were impressive. In this day, estate jewelry buyers look for and search for these pieces.

In 1895, French jeweler Rene Jules Lalique and some jewelers in America paved the way for Art Nouveau, featuring natural designs like butterflies and flowers. Estate jewelry buyers follow standard operating procedure in appraising and assaying your estate jewelry whether antique or vintage.

Author: KDL Jewelry

Jewelry making has long been an art form passed on from father to son, all the way back to ancient times; people have adorned themselves in Silver, Gold, and Gemstone Jewelry,

African tribes, the Native American Indian tribes and numerous ethnic tribes have used Bone carved pendants, Animal Ivory, Bird feathers and Seashells, to fashion accessories to use as jewelry.

Today we give our Jewelry titles, such as Ethnic Jewelry, Tribal Jewelry ,Antique Jewelry, Fashion Jewelry and so on .In this article we are going to Talk about Designer Hand made jewelry ,How to make it either for fun or for those really keen students how to do it and make money from your hobby .

Right lets get going .You have two options to start with, you can either buy raw silver from your local distributor, or find a Jewelry Manufacture that will supply you with the materials, there is a choice between 925 or 985 in the grade of silver you buy, I prefer to work in Fine silver 985, but you may find this a little difficult to buy. For the purpose of this article we are going to choose the second option and buy our material from a reputable Jewelry Manufacture and we are going to start with making a simple Sterling silver 925 pendant with a Turquoise cabochon Gemstone.

The majority of tools needed can be purchased form a good hardware store and some of the more hard to find items you will be able to get from either a Silver Jewelry Manufacture or Supplier.

Your heat source can be either a gas bottle with extension hose and flame adjusting nozzle or as we use in our workshop a petrol bellows and hose set with adjustable nozzle, its important witch ever set you buy that you can regulate the flame and heat .Next comes the hand tools you will need a small brass hammer, tweezers about 7inches long, small tin snips, brass block 4inches by 4inches and 1inch thick ,rags,2part epoxy, battery acid, fine grade file , a flexible shaft grinder and a ceramic base to heat your silver on ,here is a handy tip a house brick and unglazed roof tile work just great. That should be enough for you to get started.

Step1 is to cut a strip of silver slightly wider then the thickness of the turquoise and long enough to wrap around the diameter of the gemstone, and carefully cut it so as the 2 ends meet tightly around the gemstone.

Step2, take your solder and place a small amount of flux on the two joins, heat the silver strip till red, apply the solder carefully, and it’s joined. If you haven’t done any soldering before try a few practice runs first, you will be able to use that silver later on.

Step3, take your sterling silver band and place it on a flat piece of silver plate, check that the turquoise still fits, then as in step 2 apply flux and solder the band to the plate.

Step4, remove the excess silver with your tin snips and sand off any rough edges.

Step5,decide on a shape for your bail and cut it out of silver accordingly, bend into shape .now solder that to the pendant ,and while hot dip the whole pendant into a small jar of acid ,rinse in a jar of clear water and dry.

Step6, Place your turquoise into you silver and carefully trim away any surplus silver. Once your happy with the fit you can sand the silver again with fine grade emery paper, give a small amount of epoxy to the inside of the pendant and insert the turquoise stone .Now take a spoon and using the back work it around the pendant to give a snug fit with the silver and allow to dry.

Step7, Using your flexi grinder insert a polishing cloth disc, add some silver polish and buff the silver to the required finish.

The principles above are applied to all silver work; no it’s up to the imagination of the jewelry designer and skillfulness of the jeweler.

Garnets have been known to Man for thousands of years. Noah, it is said, used a garnet lantern to help him steer his ark through the dark night. Garnets are also found in jewellery from early Egyptian, Greek and Roman times. Many an early explorer and traveller liked to carry a garnet with him, for the garnet was popular as a talisman and protective stone, as it was believed to light up the night and protect its bearer from evil and disaster. Today, science has taught us that the garnet’s proverbial luminosity comes from its high refractive index.

Not only do garnets have many colours; they also have many names: almandine, andradite, demantoid, grossularite, hessonite, pyrope, rhodolite, tsavorite, spessartine, and uvarovite, to quote but a few. But let us restrict ourselves to the most important and begin with the red garnets. First, there is the fiery red pyrope. Its spirited red, often with a slight brownish nuance, was a gemstone colour much in demand in the 18th and 19th centuries. Garnets from a find in the north-eastern part of the former kingdom of Bohemia – small stones of a wonderful hue – were world-famous at that time. In Europe, they were worked into jewellery a good deal, especially in the Victorian period. That genuine Bohemian garnet jewellery was traditionally set with a large number of small stones, which were close to one another like the seeds of a pomegranate, with their red sparkle. And today too, garnets are still found in former Czechoslovakia and set close together according to the old tradition, the attractiveness of classical garnet jewellery thus consisting mainly in the beauty of the gemstones.

The larger central stones of the typical ‘rosettes’ are also mostly of garnet, though they belong to a different category. For the ‘almandines’, named after Alabanda, an ancient city, have a chemical composition that differs somewhat from that of the pyrope. And why, one might ask, are they used as central stones? That’s quite simple: because Nature has created the pyrope almost exclusively in small sizes, whilst allowing the almandine to grow in rather larger crystals.

A further garnet variety, also red, is the rhodolite. a mixed crystal of almandine and pyrope. This popular garnet is of a magnificent velvety red with a fine violet or raspberry-red undertone. Originally found in the USA, it now comes mainly from the gemstone mines in East Africa, India and Sri Lanka.
