Beginning December 12th, Tigers Rugby celebrates the 2010 season with 7th annual Accelerate Speed Camp, taught by head coach Paul O’Brian, PT, CSCS.

USA Rugby’s Rookie Rugby program is added to expand the fun and structure of teaching rugby for new and experienced players.  All are welcome to Paul Derda Recreation Center, 13201 Lowell Blvd in Broomfield beginning at 8:00 am.  The camp will continue every Saturday until outdoor facilities are available in February.   The only cost  is the $4.50 admission to the rec center.  Join us in the gym from 8:00- 10:00 am!  Get in great shape and learn to play rugby!

Last year, Tigers Rugby coaches successfully developed a game oriented coaching structure to help a relatively inexperienced team  reach the state quarterfinal match against Colorado Youth Rugby’s 2009 State Champions, Denver East.

The film is based on the book Playing The Enemy: Nelson Mandela And The Game That Changed a Nation by John Carlin.^[6] The filmmakers met with Carlin for a week in his Barcelona home, discussing how to transform the book into a screenplay.^[7] Morgan Freeman was the first actor to be cast, as Mandela. Matt Damon was then cast as Francois Pienaar.^[8] He was given intensive coaching by Chester Williams, another star of the 1995 team, at the Gardens Rugby Club. Filming began in March 2009 in Cape Town. “In terms of stature and stars, this certainly is one of the biggest films ever to be made in South Africa,” said Laurence Mitchell, the head of the Cape Film Commission.^[9] On March 18, 2009, Scott Eastwood was cast in an unspecified role, but it is understood to be flyhalf Joel Stransky (whose drop goal provided the Springboks’ winning margin in the 1995 final).^[10] Over Christmas 2008 auditions had taken place in London to try and find a well-known British actor to play Pienaar’s father, but in March it was decided to cast a lesser-known South African actor instead.^[11] The ex Bath Rugby player Zak Feaunati, who now is head of Rugby at Bishop Vesey’s Grammar school in Sutton Coldfield, has been cast as New Zealand player Jonah Lomu.^[12] Primary filming in South Africa was completed in May 2009.^[7] Grant Roberts was cast as Ruben Kruger, who was the Springboks’ other starting flanker in 1995. A penalty kick by Sam Glynn won the USA Rugby Division III Collegiate Rugby Regional Championship match today (October 18) in Eagan, Minnesota, by a 3-0 score over Viterbo University from La Crosse Wisconsin.

Blue Ox Rugby is a team of the University of St. Thomas students in St. Paul Minnesota. Tigers Rugby respectfully offers our hearty congratulations to Sammy on all he has done to develop his kicking, speed, and play making skills at the fly half position.

Sam was a 2-time MVP for Tigers Rugby Football Club in 2006 & 2007, and a former Tigers Rugby captain.   Sam also a member of the 2005 2A Colorado State Football Championship team as a place kicker and wide receiver for Holy Family High School.

July 11, 2009 – For six years, Tigers Rugby Football Club has coached high school aged boys from Holy Family, Broomfield, Pomona and Ralston Valley High Schools. Now, the Broomfield and Arvada rugby club has spawned an adult recreational team, made up of former players and coaches.

The inaugural Alumni Social Side placed fifth in the Denver 7s Rugby Tournament at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Sam Glynn, Quincy Anderson, Eddie Page, Neil Quinlivan, Jimmy Hullett, Max Brady, Lewis Rosenberg, Mike O’Brian, Matt O’Brian and Paul O’Brian came back to beat Queen City RFC’s over-30s side 28-21, and a Benedictine college’s touring side (The Benedictine Monks) 17-15. In early morning games, the Alumni lost to Glendale’s (nationally ranked Division I) A-side 40-0, and Colorado Springs’ (Division II) A-side 41-7.

Quincy Anderson (Colorado School of Mines) got the scoring started against Colorado Springs with a long take up the left sideline. Mike later tapped a penalty and passed to his dad, Paul O’Brian (Albany State & SUNY at Buffalo ‘82), who went the distance (5 meters) for his first try of record in at least 11 years.

Those that did not score played critical roles in building the 2-2 record on the day. Eddie Page the (original) Tigers’ scrumhalf gave the backline an extra set of hands. Lewis Rosenberg played well at three different positions. Neil Quinlivan (CSU) was a maniac, stripping balls in tackles to shut down a couple drives. Max Brady (BYU Idaho & CCD) was solid in the backline and in his first scrums, giving Glendale a couple bruises and a goal line stand. Matt O’Brian (CSU) weaved his way for a few 40 meter runs, then set great rucks to change the direction of a number of Queen City and Colorado Springs drives.

On June 27th, the annual Alumni Match was a classic, 79-71 victory for Nick Samaras, Quincy Anderson (Man of the Match), Mike O’Brian, Matt O’Brian, Patrick O’Connor, Marcus Lucero, Max Brady, Luke Stanley and Justin Sadler over the team of Paul O’Bran, Sam Glynn, Jimmy Hullett, Andy Maul, Jesse Peters, Neil Quinlivan, Eddie Page, Jake Gossman, and Lewis Rosenberg. The two hour barn burner was played in stifling heat, but no one wanted to quit until the field permit had expired. The victors erased a 43-41 half time lead.

Travis McKee (Pomona HS) was voted the 2009 Tigers Rugby Most Valuable Player. Pomona Sophomore Nick Allen was honored with the Best Rookie Back, Pomona Senior Donny Haupt the Best Rookie Forward, Holy Family HS Senior, Markus Harvey the Best Forward, and Charles Martinez (Pomona) the Best Back Awards by their teammates and coaches.

In the Tigers Rugby, Inc. Annual General Meeting, convened in Arvada, Paul O’Brian was reelected President, Jeff Gossman was reelected Treasurer, and Jim O’Connor was railroaded into serving as the Tigers Rugby Recording Secretary for the next year.

The club voted to purchase new white short sleeve jerseys, and to sell off the original set of purple jerseys. Cost of the old jerseys was set at $30. Contact us if you are an alumnus, or a current player interested in purchasing one.

The club expressed their appreciation to Tigers Rugby’s sponsors (Accelerate Physical Therapy, Gas & Arc Supply and Coffman & Companies), the captains, players and parents for the a great year, capped by our best finish in Tigers Rugby playoff history.

A Tigers Alumni side will play in the Denver 7s at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on July 11th. Development of a social men’s side is underway as originally proposed to Queen City RFC two years ago.

*Colorado Youth Rugby Boys Championship Results from Tigers Rugby Football Club Tigers Rugby Football Club - A High School Aged Team in Colorado Youth Rugby *

The 25th Annual Colorado Youth Rugby High School Boys Championship was played on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at North Stadium in Westminster.

The team that knocked Tigers Rugby out of the playoffs took home the Championship Cup.  Denver East came from behind to beat the Aurora Saracens 23-20.   Chaparral defeated Glendale 20-19 in the Consolation Final, and Regis Jesuit held off the Northside Vikings 26-19 in the Plate Final.
