The first step is to realize that you want to join Cross Country (XC). After that you should start running as far as you can go without stopping. You should ease yourself into running, not running every single day when you are out of shape. Once or twice a week for the first few weeks, and then 3-4 times the next month. Finally you should be able to run 5-6 times a week (for at least a few miles) every week. The distance should stay similar every time you run (I recommend about 2 miles) for the first few months.

Now that you can run 5-6 times a week, you should focus on increasing your distance. Slowly go about a little bit further every week. Doing different runs at this point in training will be much more helpful than when you had to run the same run every day for 5-6 days a week for a whole month. No matter how far you go, you should at least do 1 easy run a week. During an easy run, go at a slow pace for about 3 miles.

All of your training should be done months before you begin the season.
