Million Maclaren Stroller Recall for Hinge Covers - PSA

UPDATE: Many other sites have since picked this up so I consider it confirmed. NY Daily News, CNN, Consumerist, etc.

The last 11 years worth of Maclaren Strollers are potentially going to be 'recalled' due to hinge issues on Tuesday, November 10th.

From the Baby Bargains Book Blog:
"Maclaren plans to recall 1 million strollers---all its production between 1999 and 2009---after receiving 12 reports of hinges on the stroller that amputated children's fingertips. The company will send out a cover for the hinges to all owners."

Additionally, from Goore's Blog:
"Maclaren will be providing, free of charge, to all consumers who own an affected Maclaren single or double stroller a kit to cover the strollers hinge mechanism. The kit consists of two simple easy-to-fit covers that fit over the left and right hand hinges on the sides of the stroller. They will simply zip around the joint on the stroller frame. Retailers will be receiving kits to update existing inventory but most likely will not have extras. The quickest way to obtain the kit will be to order them through Maclaren either from their website www.maclaren.us/recall or by calling 877-688-2326. Both are currently not functioning but presumably will be on 11/10."

This will be our second baby product recall in 10 months. I am hesitant to believe this until Maclaren issues the recall, but will be keeping a wary eye on our finger chomping Techno XLR until this is confirmed or denied.

Today I received an e-mail from Rite Aid stating that their 'Video Values' is resetting on October 1st. By watching 20 points worth of videos you can earn a earn a coupon good $5 off $20! The following is the text of the email.

"We are pleased to announce a new Rite Aid Video Values program beginning October 1, 2009! During the month of October you will find a new set of videos and coupons, including another $5 off $20 Rite Aid Bonus Coupon when you earn 20 video credits! Plus, at your request, we added the ability to print individual coupons so you can just print the coupons you are ready to use.

Please make note of the following:

· Starting on October 1, your credit total will be re-set to zero so you can earn credits toward the NEW $5 off $20 Rite Aid Bonus Coupon. Just like the August/September program, you may only earn this coupon one time in the month of October.
· Any coupons you earned during August or September (and that you did NOT already print) will be available in your My Rewards page through their expiration date of October 31, 2009."

This is just a short PSA. Your local library has 1000's of books, magazines, and videos available for use at no cost.

Our local Fort Washington Public Library has one the best children's room that I have ever seen in a public library. It was recently renovated and space makes me feel like a kid again, filled with wonder and excitement for reading and learning. We try to take our 10 month old daughter at least once a week. We recently took her to an infant story hour and received a free book and music CD for attending.

The recession is very tough on public libraries. Often, these wonderful institutions are the first to have their budgets cut. Please support yours in any way that you can.

Free Museums in NYC

There has been a lot of posting about free Museum Day tomorrow. In NYC, as usual, we are not so lucky. The link below is to a great list of museums and the dates/times that they offer free or reduced admission.

There are some great NYC Museums that are ALWAYS free, such as:
- American Numismatic Society
- The Drawing Center
- The Hispanic Society of America
- National Museum of the American Indian
- New York City Police Museum

Although the museums listed above have free admission policies, please remember that they could always use attendee donations, so give what you can/wish if you go.

We have successfully taken our 9 month old daughter to many museums on free days and she seems to love it, especially sculpture, which she always seems to want to gab with/at!

"In consultation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), McNeil Consumer Healthcare is voluntarily initiating a recall of certain lots of Children's and Infants' TYLENOL products that were manufactured between April 2008 and June 2008."

Thrifty Mama and I constantly use our 'homebrewed' MS Excel worksheet to track our expenses and savings. It appears that MS also provides some wonderful looking, free of charge Excel Financial/Expenses worksheets at the link above. No personal information is required to download.

Unfortunately for us Mac users, they only provide the templates for PCs. If anyone uses one of these, let us know how they work!

Thrifty Daddy just learned about the CareGiversMarketplace.com. The site allows you to submit receipts with participating products for a rebate check.

To my surprise, Huggies Diapers and Ensure Shakes are covered. The Huggies Diapers are obviously for Daughter V. More unexpected is that Ensure Shakes are also eligible for a rebate. We purchase a lot of Ensure for Baby V's caregiver who has Chrohn's (a very small price to pay for such a wonderful and loving caregiver). This will be a nice and unexpected rebate, if it comes.
