I just launched Little Dragon’s new website. The beautiful visual design was by Eric Wicks, and the amazing illustrations were done by Jan Scharlou. It was great working with them as well as the band and all the other creative and smart folks involved in this project.

Atticus Circle – mobilizing straight people for equal rights

Atticus Circle is a national social justice organizations that organizing straight allies of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) partners, parents, and their children. I recently redeveloped their website and shot most of the photography for the new site. We used Drupal, CiviCRM, and a fresh design and visual images to reinvigorate their web presence, which is a key piece of their outreach strategy.

2010 Austin People’s Gallery award

International Children’s Human Rights Film Festival poster

“The Least of These” documentary premiering at South by Southwest

Earlier I wrote about a website I made for a documentary on the Hutto Detention facility in Taylor, Texas, which houses immigrant children and their families in what was once a medium-security prison. The documentary was recently revamped and completed, and was accepted into the yearly South by Southwest film and music festival (SXSW) in Austin, Texas.

I am looking forward to the documentary, which chronicles a very troubling miscarriage of justice. From the website:

Detention of immigrant children in a former medium-security prison in Texas leads to controversy when three activist attorneys discover troubling conditions at the facility. This compelling documentary film explores the role – and limits – of community activism, and considers how American rights and values apply to the least powerful among us.

2009 People’s Gallery Exhibition

I was selected to be in the 2009 Austin People’s Gallery Exhibition at City Hall, organized by Austin’s Cultural Arts Division. My work will be hanging at Austin City Hall for the duration of 2009. 300 applicants were selected out of more than 1,000. They’ll be hanging the photograph that is on my homepage, “Three children skipping rocks,” which was taken outside of Santiago de Cuba, in the summer of 2002.

My work featured on new Austin-based artists website

I’m happy to announce that a new company, Austin Handmade, is featuring my photography. As you can probably infer, they carry locally made art, clothing, cards, and other items. I also photographed most of the model and product photography for the site, which was fun because they feature some great local work.

new pregnancy photography gallery

Since my friends first started having kids, and especially since I found out I was having my own, I’ve become increasingly interested in pregnancy photography. Since then, I have photographed a few women(and their partners) who are expecting children. I’ve tried to get away from many of the pitfall clichés of much of the pregnancy photography I’ve seen, and experimented with different techniques, including the Diana+ camera. I would love to expand my portfolio in this direction, so please let me know if you know anyone who might be interested.

Recent magazine work – Farfelu and ColorLines

I’ve recently done some work for two non-profit magazines, one local and one national. Farfelu Magazine is a Texas-based publication that

“exists to give voice to writers and artists in all places – especially Austin – and to celebrate their diversity and their skills.”

The theme of the issue was “motherhood” and one of the editors, Elisabeth, contacted me after seeing some photographs at Clementine and asked if they could run some. They ended up running four, and I was very happy with the outcome. You can see tear sheets from the issue here, here, and here. You can order an issue here.

ColorLines Magazine, a national non-profit that covers issues of race and class, also hired me to take some photos of houses in East Austin for an article on immigrant housing. Click on the thumbnail to the left to see the tear sheet, or even better order an issue.
