Pentax P30 - Woolacombe Beach

With the demise of Jessops in Barnstaple I thought I was going to struggle to get my 35mm colour film processed – I found a place in South Molton so the panic is over.

The image above was taken with my trusty Pentax P30 35mm camera (no 3702885) using an out of date roll of Kodak Gold film (Kodak GT 800-4). There is something sad about motionless swingboats.

These are on Woolacombe Beach and I always look forward to them being re-erected after the long winter – their colours and painted swirls bring the promise of hope to the desolate beach.

The winter population of Woolaconbe is very small (around 1,000), but during the summer large numbers of people come to the village for their holidays. Many are motivated to visit because of the excellent surfing conditions found locally.

The Pentax P30, 35mm film camera has a semi-automatic mode, which chooses most of the settings but allows for more creativity.

Pentax P30 has shutter speeds from 1/1000 of a second to 1 second. The automatic mode on this film camera chooses the best shutter speed and aperture setting for the natural light available.

In 1952 Asahi Optical introduced its first camera, the Asahiflex (the first Japanese SLR using 35mm film). The name “Pentax” was originally a registered trademark of the East German VEB Zeiss Ikon (from “Pentaprism” and “Contax”) but, as all Germans patents were annulled with the country’s defeat, the name “Pentax” was taken by the Asahi Optical in 1957. Since then the company has been primarily known for its photographic products, distributed under the name “Asahi Pentax” (equipment was imported to the United States from the 1950s until the mid-1970s by Honeywell Corporation and branded “Honeywell Pentax”). The company was renamed Pentax Corporation in 2002. It was one of the world’s largest optical companies, producing still cameras, binoculars, spectacle lenses, and a variety of other optical instruments. In 2004 Pentax had about 6000 employees.

Jessops Europe Limited

Jessops Europe Limited, trading as Jessops, is a British photographic retailing company. It was founded in Leicester in 1935 by Frank Jessop and traded under the name of The Jessop Group Limited. The business entered administration on 9 January 2013 and all Jessops retail stores ceased trading on 11 January 2013 until the British entrepreneur Peter Jones invested several million pounds into the company and formed Jessops Europe Limited.

Six stores opened on 28th March 2013. The re-launch at Oxford Street in London on 28th March 2013 received a huge amount of media interest & was attended by celebrities including actor James Corden.

The image below was created using 35mm negatives that had been taken using a Pentax SP1000 camera. All Pentax Spotmatics (SP) use the M42 screw-thread lens mount. The lenses are focused at maximum aperture to give a bright viewfinder image for focusing, then a switch at the side stops the lens down and switches on the metering to enable the exposure to be set prior to shutter release. The photographs below were taken in 1981 and 2012 and merged together in March 2013.

‘Le déjeuner sur l’herbe’ a photographic version.

Edouard Manet’s Déjeuner sur l’herbe (a large oil on canvas, during 1862 and 1863) caused a big stir at the Salon des Refusés in Paris, having been rejected by the Salon jury of 1863. Manet seized the opportunity to exhibit this and two other paintings, at the 1863 exhibition and reveled in the public notoriety and controversy that followed.

The painting has historic and pastoral overtones, depicting the juxtaposition of a female nude and a scantily dressed female bather on a picnic with two fully dressed men in a rural setting. This painting references previous works of art by Titian (c.1487–1576) and Giorgione (c.1476–1510). The piece is now in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. A smaller, earlier version can be seen at the Courtauld Gallery, London.

Famously, coinciding with Annabella Lwin’s posing for album cover work, her mother alleged exploitation of a minor for immoral purposes, and instigated a Scotland Yard investigation. As a result the band was only allowed to leave the UK after McLaren promised not to promote Lwin as a “sex kitten”. This included an agreement to not use a nude photograph depicting Lwin as the woman in The Luncheon on the Grass (Le déjeuner sur l’herbe), though the picture was used as the cover of the band’s 1982 RCA EP The Last of the Mohicans, which became their best-selling album in the U.S.

WordPress app - tested on a train - post first published on sitemaps-xml.com

The WordPress app is a handy little tool, the stats data you see is the same data you see when at your blog’s web dashboard. This includes 'Views by Country' and 'Top Posts & Pages'. If your blog is a self-hosted blog you can enable the stats in the app by installing the free Jetpack plugin into your web dashboard.

I struggle with this app - but I like it and is it is perfect for making notes on the go.

The WordPress app has traditionally been a twitchy thing and unfortunately it still is when using some blog templates - images disappear and code becomes meaningless spaghetti. The best use for this app is as an optimizing tool, using the stat capability. If you want to post something on the go then just use the text fields and ignore inserting media. Having tested this app on an iPhone and a Sony Xperia, the android version worked better for me.

The Android StumbleUpon app has been updated. StumbleUpon has become one of the most useful ‘share link’ sites around. The element of randomness that is built into both the website and app, by finding pages by chance, can be the inspiration that fuels a new idea. I can’t recommend it highly enough – excellent.

Back to creating images again - I think I was born to be a printmaker.

At what point does a nude painting, drawing, print etc, become a sexual or voyeuristic object? Is art above pornography? Is eroticism pornography?

Too many questions – I think the nude (in art) is simply a type of voyeurism

The principal characteristic of voyeurism is that the voyeur does not normally relate directly with the subject of his/her interest, who is often unaware of being observed. Voyeurism may involve the making of a secret photograph or video of the subject during an intimate activity. When the interest in a particular subject is obsessive, the behavior may be described as stalking.

I have always loved the drawings of Degas. The way he portrayed women in ‘the moment’ is sensual and truthful, a skill to be admired. His intimate sketches are defiantly voyeuristic.

In the late 1880s, Degas developed a passion for photography and this new skill influenced the composition of his paintings. He photographed many of his friends, dancers and nudes, and used them as source material for his drawings and paintings.

At what point does Art become pornography?

Does it make it OK for an artist to say he is being erotic in his work, when a non-artist would be accused of being a pornographer or are they the same thing packaged differently?

The use of increasingly explicit sexual imagery in print, on TV, on the Internet, as advertising etc. is common place. This is not a new phenomenon, the female form has been used to sell products and services ever since man invented ‘the market place’. Sexuality is considered one of the most powerful tools of marketing and advertising.

There is a thin (if not a completely invisible) dividing line between art and porn. Intent and message maybe the grey area between them – erotic art is marketed as, and is intended to be seen as pieces of art, flirting with formal elements of art processes, for example referring to other historical artworks. Pornography also uses these tools but its primary intent is to sexually arouse. The distinction between art and porn is highly subjective and I would argue that there is really no difference.

Post-advertising sales response studies have shown that using the naked female form as a tool for attracting immediate interest is effective – but are we becoming immune to sexy ads and not bothering to read the sales pitch?

‘Manet: Portraying Life’ has been organised by the Royal Academy of Arts, London, in collaboration with the Toledo Museum of Art and is the first ever retrospective devoted to the portraiture of Edouard Manet. The exhibition consists of more than 50 of his works, a vast number of which were ‘never exhibited in his lifetime’ (and maybe should never have been exhibited).

Manet’s ‘Olympia’ is one of my all time favorite paintings but…

If you were not already familiar with Manet’s painting I think you would get the wrong impression from this exhibition – the quality of the majority of the paintings is ‘second rate’ at best and most definitely not typical of his work. This exhibition has done him a massive injustice, threatening his status as an important innovator. He is one of the greatest artists ever but this exhibition portrays him as a mediocre one – a massive shame.

I think you have to view this exhibition as ‘work in progress’ or ‘paintings to be resolved.

The painting of Berthe Morisot is one of the ‘stars’ of the show and does the man credit. Morisot herself is credited with convincing Manet to attempt plein air painting, she also became his sister-in-law when she married his brother, Eugene…

I did an interview with Jake Bright about the difference between playing bass for ‘The Dastards’ and double bass with The North Devon Sinfonia. This interview took place in-between rehearsals for the Sinfonia’s performance at the Landmark Theatre (Ilfracombe) which was on April 18th 2009. The programme included: Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture, Strauss’ Four Last Songs with the soprano Naomi Harvey from the Welsh National Opera and finally Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, op.64. The disciplines required for both instruments influences Jake’s own compositions.

There is also an interview with Dave and Sadie Green. Dave is a photographer and Sadie has spent the last few years in the funding side of the Arts. This interview discusses the demise of ‘ArtsCulture’ in Devon and the vacuum left behind by this organisations disappearance.

What’s it really like living with creativity? Look back over the years at the tortured artists, drunken writers and drug-crazed musicians who litter our heritage and you might start to ask the question: is creativity a blessing or a curse?…the temptation to contain creativity and make it conform to ‘the norm’ is what normally happens in businesses. You can’t have a random, inspired, maverick shooting off left right and center – this is chaos….or is it?

Juggling with creativity, trying to make it fit into your daily life is a logistical nightmare. In an interview I did with Claire Barker, an artist, illustrator, author, mother, wife, farmer, she explained to me how she talked to the solicitor of the estate of Ted Hughes (UK poet) to get their permission to use one of his poems and still managed to deliver lambs.

Edward James (Ted) Hughes, OM (17 August 1930 – 28 October 1998) was an English poet and children’s writer. Critics routinely rank him as one of the best poets of his generation. Hughes was British Poet Laureate from 1984 until his death.

Hughes was married to American poet Sylvia Plath, from 1956 until her suicide in 1963 at the age of 30. His part in the relationship became controversial to some feminists and (particularly) American admirers of Plath. His last poetic work, Birthday Letters (1998), explored their complex relationship. These poems make reference to Plath’s suicide, but none of them addresses directly the circumstances of her death. A poem discovered in October 2010, Last letter, describes what happened during the three days leading up to Plath’s suicide.

Creativity is something we are all born with to greater or lesser degrees. It is a vital part of our physiological make up and development. We learn to play and fantasize as children, skills we carry forward into our adulthood. However, if creativity takes hold of your entire existence then it becomes a disease that is parasitic, eating away at your whole world. It might sound melodramatic but creativity can become a cancer of the body or the trigger for psychotic episodes.

Listen to Alisha, a doctor, a GP who is also a poet. I try to find out if creativity is a madness, a disease, an anesthetic or a poison but find out that maybe it could be a ‘Zebra’. Does she use creativity in diagnosis and consultation.

Can a creative person ever be truly happy as they constantly strive for perfection in their chosen art? Listen to an interview with Garry Smout, who talks about the problems of using early portable black and white video cameras in the 1970’s, pioneering literary review website the Barcelona Review, early synths and how to kill your babies. The problem with being creative is that everything has to be pushed to the limits.

George Braque was born on 13 May 1882, in Argenteuil, Val-d’Oise. He grew up in Le Havre and trained to be a house painter and decorator like his father and grandfather. He also studied (real) painting during evenings at the École des Beaux-Arts, in Le Havre, from about 1897 to 1899. In Paris, he was an apprentice to a decorator and was awarded his certificate in 1902.

Early works were impressionistic, but after seeing the work of the “Fauves” (Beasts) in 1905, Braque adopted a their Fauvist style. This group included Henri Matisse and André Derain etc. Their use of bright, vivid and brilliant colors was their response to the emotional side of artistic representation.

Braque’s paintings of 1908–1913 reflected a new interest in geometry and simultaneous (multi) perspective. He conducted an intense study of the effects of light, perspective and the technical means that painters use to represent these effects, seeming to question the most standard of artistic conventions. This was the beginning of Cubism… (?)

RECYCLE was an exhibition of artwork using recycled materials; anything from mud and earth to old tin cans and plastic. The theme of the exhibition was 'Dartmoor' - all the work related in some way to Dartmoor - using material found there or simply by artists who work there. More than a dozen artists submitted work for the show.

The exhibition opened on 15 April and continued until 27 May

The Museum of Dartmoor Life (MDL) is a local museum in Okehampton, Devon, southwest England. The museum was opened in 1981 and is housed on three floors of a 19th century mill. There is a waterwheel exhibited at the museum. The collections concentrate on the social history of Dartmoor and Okehampton from prehistoric times to the present. The museum is run as an independent charitable trust with a board of trustees.

Using tape is a very quick and physical way to create images. The plasticness of the material has a unique quality and is ideal for creating images that are bold, strong, colourful and contemporary. Each layer adds depth and intensity to the colour underneath and like lithography new colours are created as each transparent layer is added.

The quality of point and shoot 35mm film cameras is rather poor if you compare them to modern digital SLRs but...

The warm quality and retro feel of the images are perfect for my analogue exploits.

The Pentax Espio 120mi is point-and-shoot, mid-range, 35mm film camera (also called a compact camera) and is a still camera designed for simplicity. The Espio is an autofocus unit, having automatic exposure settings options and a built in flash unit.

The photograph above was taken using a Pentax Espio 120mi, which I obtained from a charity shop for £1.50. I used Ilford HP5 Plus a 35mm black and white film. More on HP5 here?

Design initiatives make this a small and flexible camera – notably the physical size and overall quality of finish make this camera a stylish baby. It houses a good quality zoom lens (38-120mm), with plenty of features that enable a variety of picture taking settings.

The focus and exposure system on this easy to use camera is an improvement on earlier Pentax compacts, giving sharp results and a decent contrast of tones. One of the most useful applications available on this model is ‘backlight compensation’ setting, which enables you to take a photograph using natural light in the background and flash in the foreground, giving an even tone across the image. Panorama mode is included in this little package which gives a different aspect ratio from most other cameras.

The art of language and communication has been shackled.

Creating good solid business keywords is not a decorative process it is a complicated exercise. Juxtaposing words together is a bit like creating a collage, the mind always tries to create a narrative when confronted with the written word. The main problem is creating a text that not only makes sense but is also effective in attracting good search engine placement. All this weight and burden the written word carries somehow devalues the purity and the the soul of written conversation, making us slaves to the likes of Google.

We can only use language in a manner that Google prescribes:

Words taken out of context lose their meaning. Publishing documents that contain controversial language puts the author at risk. Any constructed environment can promote alienation, but it can also enhance communication to form a quasi-organic platform for human interaction, unless of course Google disapproves of the dialogue.

This emphasis on words as a search engine tool has in many respect created a censorship, we can only use language in a manner that Google prescribes to gain a placement in their searches. The very nature of language has been changed an altered to accommodate this new set of rules. Closing the door on non-conformity.

The fact that most of us have an on-line persona suggests that computer communication enables us to visit places and have discussions with people we would normally avoid. We are engaging in the pseudo-anonymous system/society. Underground activities have long since migrated out of analog media (the printed word, film etc.) into 'this world'. This world has evolved into a global system with multiple layers in which new authorities compete to control its uses; platform wars, chip races, and operating system alliances etc. The pseudo-identity of the user is being exposed; law is punishing non-conformity, censorship and the rules of globalization have invaded the system. The Klondike Spirit has taken over the open system and turned it into the homogenized high street we all know. The art of language and communication has been shackled.

(A non-homogeneous system, whose terms and relationships are not constant, allows language to break up, to stumble over the rules of its grammar, by necessity it has to respond radically to other linguistic components, creating a new linguistic order and syntax. )

The demand for good affordable art has been spearheaded by an interest from emerging economies. Creating a real vintage looking image is better than creating a fake. This image was taken with a Pentax K1000 35mm camera in July 2012.

The rise of Instagram, a free photo sharing program that was launched in October 2010 is the best example of this ‘look back' at analogue photography from the 20th century. This service allows users to take a photo and apply a digital retro filter to it and then share it on most social networking services. The distinctive retro feature of this app is that it converts photos, which in contemporary formats are rectangle, to a square shape, like Kodak Instamatic and Polaroid images of the 70s. The most common aspect ratios used in still camera photography, are 4:3, 3:2 (more recently in consumer cameras 16:9 is being used). Other used aspect ratios include 5:3, 5:4, and 1:1 which produces the square format. Most mobile devices have a 4:3 aspect ratio.

The Pentax Espio 120mi is point-and-shoot, mid-range, 35mm film camera (also called a compact camera) and is a still camera designed for simplicity. The Espio is an autofocus unit, having automatic exposure settings options and a built in flash unit.

The photograph above was taken on Morte Point using a Pentax Espio 120mi, which I obtained from a charity shop for £1.50. I used Ilford HP5 Plus a 35mm black and white film. More on HP5 here?

Design initiatives make this a small and flexible camera – notably the physical size and overall quality of finish make this camera a stylish baby. It houses a good quality zoom lens (38-120mm), with plenty of features that enable a variety of picture taking settings.

The focus and exposure system on this easy to use camera is an improvement on earlier Pentax compacts, giving sharp results and a decent contrast of tones. One of the most useful applications available on this model is ‘backlight compensation’ setting, which enables you to take a photograph using natural light in the background and flash in the foreground, giving an even tone across the image. Panorama mode is included in this little package which gives a different aspect ratio from most other cameras.

Moonbase Alpha was sent hurtling uncontrollably into space – we, after the cold war’s race for the moon ended, were left earth locked. The promises of putting a man on Mars by the 1980′s just fizzled out when the cold war faded.

Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, has died aged 82. What a waste of a dream. As an 11 year old I watched the first moon landing in 1969. I was mad about everything to do with space travel, I would read anything that was about rockets, cosmonauts and astronauts.
Later in my life I shook the hand of a man who shook the hand of my all time hero Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin, that was for me like touching history, if only secondhand (excuse the pun).

Here is a view across out to Baggy Point, looking over the Woolacombe Bay Hotel.

The photograph above was taken with a Pentax Spotmatic 35mm camera using ‘old stock’ (March 2000) Agfacolor HDC 200. I am really impressed with the vintage postcard look of this image – very 1950s. The slideshow below contains some of images taken from the same roll of film, they have a distinctive red/brown tint.

The Spotmatic first appeared on the market in the early 1960s.

“Reflections Ilfracombe Harbour Jubilee Day 2012″

The composition of this painting is based on a Union Jack and is a combination of screen printing and painting.

The reflections in the harbour in Ilfracombe always amaze me – the dirty sea water mixed with the vivid colours of the reflected boats, the bobbing flotsam and jetsam, the sunlight and oil spills.

My current preoccupation at the moment with 35mm film photography as taught me to look at things again – capturing the odd moment or peculiar juxtaposition.

The photograph above of Ilfracombe harbour was taken with a Pentax Spotmatic 500, a classic 35mm camera in June 2012.
