Yet when packing to emigrate, or for long term stays, it's easy to think those small packages of joy will not be needed, or even useless.

One such item is the four-plug block for UK plugs. "What possible use can that be in New Zealand," you might say as you toss it into storage or into the wheelie bin. But the four-block holds a secret, it is the most essential item you'll need for getting all your electrical goods working.

For a start, Kiwi plugs do not come with a fuse and rental properties are not required to have electrical checks by the landlord. You can never be sure just what sort of system you are plugging into, how old, or how safe.

So it's advisable to keep your UK fused plugs on your appliances, particularly sensitive electrical items like computers, DVD players and stereos.

Secondly, plugs, NZ-UK conversion plugs and power leads are hideously expensive, once you are here. One, un-fused, plastic plug that feels so cheap it should be condemned costs nearly £2 ($5 at current rates). Imagine you have to buy and change all the plugs on all your goods; it's not just the expense, it's the time, and these plugs are fiddly and difficult to change compared to UK plugs.

Converter plugs are worse. These can cost £6 a pop ($15) or more.

But if you take your UK four block and change just the single plug on that, you can carry on using all the good quality, fused plugs from Britain.

At considerably less expense, so don't forget to put a couple in your suitcases and shipping boxes even though it seems counter-intuitive.

...its goal is to stop British GPs leaving the NHS while the UK is in such a financial mess

IN what amounts to a punitive tax on GPs that have worked in NZ, the National Health Service is preventing British trained doctors from returning to the UK by "putting in place a pretty draconian policy".

Reported in Pulse, Nov 2011, The Committee of GP Education Deaneries (COGPED) - the organisation representing deaneries across the UK - issued new guidance in June to PCOs and assessors on ensuring GP returners prove their clinical competence before they can be re-admitted to performers' lists.

As a result, deaneries in England and Northern Ireland have toughened up returner scheme requirements, requiring GPs returning from abroad to resit a series of medical exams to prove their clinical competence when they return, even if they have been working in similar, English-speaking environments such as Australia, New Zealand or the USA.

The policy in England and Northern Ireland has angered some GPs, who claim it is preventing returners from going back to work for up to a year, even if they have been working in countries with similar environments to the UK.

A British GP working in Wellington who wishes to remain anonymous said, "That's our decision made for us. We've been struggling to decide when to head back to the UK, and now a return has been made impossible. How do we support children with a year of no pay?"

The GP in question remains a member of the GMC (General Medical Council) but is furious she was not informed of the new policy which appeared out of the blue.

"I even spoke to the GMC a year ago on rumours of such a policy, but was categorically informed no such plans existed."

"You can see this as a policy to prevent GPs returning to the UK, and I have absolutely no idea why they would do such a thing. People I have spoken to in the UK say they have trouble getting to see English speaking GPs, you would think they'd offer us a 'Golden Hello' not prevent us from returning. "

The top five list of the most missed, revealed by the poll of over 2,000 British adults, also includes missing out on favourite TV programmes (8%) and not being familiar with our surroundings, with ‘knowing my way around’ coming in at number four (7%). A decent morning cuppa was also important to holiday makers, with ‘my own teabags’ making it into the top five (5%).

According to the poll, the Welsh seem to be a nation of home comfort lovers, with 40% saying they’d miss their own bed the most. Those from the East Midlands are most likely to be craving a good old cup of English tea (12% vs. 5% GB wide) and it appears that the true British pub lovers of the UK are located in the North West, as residents from here are more likely to miss their local pub when jetting off to another country (5% vs. 2% GB wide).

It’s the regular routine of the TV that those from Devon, Cornwall and Somerset areas miss more than any other region, with 13% of respondents in South West Britain saying they missed their favourite TV programmes when away - 5% above the national average.

Andrew Shorrock, Product Manager at carhiremarket.com, says,“Our survey really does show that no matter how appealing a hot and sunny destination might be, us Brits really do savour our home comforts. You simply can’t beat your own bed, a nice cup of tea or even your own car, according to 4% of men!”

Results below from the carhiremarket.com survey of what Brits missed most when holidaying abroad:

My own bed (30%)

Tap water (17%)

Favourite TV programmes (8%)

Knowing my way around (7%)

My usual teabags (5%)

My own car (3%)

Driving on the left hand side of the road (3%)

My local pub (2%)
