Your visit to Big Bear Lake would not be complete without a drive around the 22 mile Lake. Fawnskin, Ca. is an authentic small mining and logging town on the North Shore of Big Bear Lake approx. 4 miles from the Dam. As the Town of Big Bear Lake has been modernized over the years with only old photos of what it was like so many years ago, there is no mistaking when you enter Fawnskin as you are immediately taken back in what it was like (and still is) to live in the early Gold Rush Days.
The famous restaurant is still operating and serves the Best Breakfast (and night life) on the entire North Shore of Big Bear. While the Fawn Lodge Hotel filled with Brothel rooms, still stands as a reminder what it must of been like to live in Fawnskin over a 100 years ago.
Fawnskin (and the entire Big Bear Valley for that matter) is also home to several we'll known celebrities and artists. The most famous celebrity's living full time in Fawnskin are Shirley Jones from the Partridge Family and her Husband Comedian Marty Ingles. They actually bought one of the few remaining prime lots in Downtown Fawnskin in 2001 to rescue it from new development which IMO it would of taken away from the old town appeal. Marty's idea was to turn it into a Park for everyone to enjoy and with the help from community donations, spent several Hundred Thousand Dollars transforming it into an eye catching theme park devoted to the 9/11 tragedy. Along with life-size statues of policemen, firemen and rescuers to name just a few. Marty was also able to obtain a large piece of metal that came from the World Trade Center One. Even though the Park is still kept in pristine condition, he has what you might say, a modernized feud going on with the Town with just about every resident taking side's. To get the latest scoop just ask any full time resident and they will be glad to give you their opinion on this beautiful (Now Private) Park that is now closed to the public.
One of the advantages of renting a cabin in Fawnskin is the location along the Lake. Some of the most Beautiful views in all of Big Bear Valley is from the Fawnskin side looking towards the Lake with the Ski Slopes in Big Bear in the background. Another attractive feature for picking a Private Cabin Rental in Fawnskin during the Winter time if too much snow is not your thing, is the snow melts much faster on that side of the Lake. You get the breath taking views of Winter in the Mountains, but not all the hassle that's sometimes just on the other side of Big Bear Lake.
A few other things to do in Fawnskin include the entrance into the National Forest that takes you to Holcomb Valley a few short miles on forest roads. Holcomb Valley is best known for the Largest Gold Rush in the State of California in the Big Bear Valley that lead to a stampede of Gold Miners and helped transform what Big Bear has become is today. There is also several campgrounds and camping sites along the North Shore leading back up in the hills. Before heading off into the Wilderness it's highly advised you first visit the Big Bear Discovery Center and obtain a self guided driving tour map of the area as we'll as any necessary camping permits and a Forest parking pass. Along this rather interesting trail you will come accross the famous Hangman's Tree that still stands today. Not far away the grave of a Miner sits peacefully along the Trail. The Discovery Center is located 4 miles East on the main road going threw Fawnskin, Ca.
Personally I have always loved this side of Big Bear Lake. It's less crowded and the Locals are some of the most nicest down to earth people you could ever hope to meet. Oh, did I mention traffic? It's a rare occasion when you can't drive right on Thur Downtown Fawnskin.

Big Bear Boat Tours

Cabins In Sugarloaf

Sugarloaf, CA. is located on the Southeast side of Big Bear Lake when your making the 22 mile loop. Interestingly, Sugarloaf was first divided into private camping areas when it was first developed. For this reason, that's why most of the lots in Sugarloaf were first divided into 25' by 25' lots, however many of the Homes now occupy multiple lots.

Sugerloaf also has one of the highest density of Private Vacation Cabin's in all of Big Bear lake Area. During the last Census, it was estimated that only 2 out of every 9 Homes were full time residents far exceeding the nearly 50% average for the Entire Big Bear Valley. Personally I think this number has gone up some in recent years, but I'm sure the ratio still favors Second Home Owners and Private Vacation Cabins.

Compared to other areas around Big Bear Valley, Sugar loaf for the most part, is a more affordable place to find a private cabin with a wide selection to choose from. You may not have a Lakefront View of Big Bear Lake, but you will be situated in a more relaxed atmosphere surrounded by tall Pine Tree's and within only a few miles of both Ski Resorts as we'll as Big Bear Lake itself.

Shopping in Sugarloaf should be taken into consideration before heading out to that side of the lake as there is not many choices. Apart from the Easy's Convenience Store and the Roadhouse Bar and Grill across the street, that's about it. Both Von's and Stater Bros. are approx. 6 to 7 miles from Sugarloaf.

The Roadhouse Bar and Grill has a decent menu with usually prompt service. There is also a few pool tables and darts for your enjoyment. The Nightlife at the Roadhouse can get somewhat interesting especially when they have Live Bands Playing. Give the Road House a call at (909) 585-0404 to see whats going on when your in Town.

Sugarloaf also recently built a really nice Skate Park at the Sugarloaf Park across the street from Big Bear High School. The Skate Park has become a Big Hit with the Locals despite a lot of controversy. Sugarloaf Park also has Baseball Diamonds, Basketball Court, Picnic Areas and a large playground area.
All in All Sugarloaf is a peaceful Community off the beaten path and all the traffic usually found on any busy week-end. A few miles drive can save you $$$ and still stay in a really nice private cabin rental up in the Mountains of Sugarloaf.

Private Cabins in Boulder Bay Area

Boulder Bay is located on the north east side of Big Bear Lake, Ca. surrounded with several large granite boulder's and tall pine trees in amongst the Cabins.

The Boulder Bay area is without a doubt, one of my favorite places around the entire Big Bear Lake. The Boulder Bay Area here is defined as starting at the Log Cabin Restaurant on the corner of Big Bear Blvd and Edgemoor Rd. and heading South down Big Bear Blvd. all the way to the Dam. This area also includes the Private Cabin Rentals available within the Papoose Bay, Metcalf Bay as we'll as the actual Boulder Bay itself.

Some of the most popular activities to do in the Boulder Bay Area would first have to be the BEST Swimming hole in the Entire Big Bear Lake. Starting at the Dam and heading East, it's only a few hundred yards to the South side before you will see China Island. (The Only island on Big Bear) The island itself is private property but the rock outcropping 40 feet to the West is fair game and a great place to go swimming. You can also go Cliff-Diving with boulders ranging anywhere from 5' up to 35' high depending on the water level in Lake. For those that don't have access to a boat, there is a small place to pull over approx. 1/4 mile from the Dam Parking Lot and just after the first major right turn bend in the road. There is only approx. 6-8 parking places there depending on how folks park so get there early on the weekends because it usually fills up fast. Once parked just follow the trail down towards the lake about 500 yards and you will run right into the swimming area.

Boulder Bay is also known for the several miles of Hiking and Biking Trails leading back into the National Forest. One of the most popular trails in Boulder Bay is the Castle Rock Trail which winds up the Mountain to, you guesses it, Castle Rock. Castle Rock is most famous for the steep cliffs that surround it. Technically speaking, it would be classified in the upper range of difficulty, but once on top, the Views of Boulder Bay surrounded by Big Bear Lake are just magnificent. To get to Castle Rock starting at Big Bear Dam, go approx. 1 mile towards the Village. You can see where the Trail starts on your left hand side, but you need to keep going approx. 100 ft. for a place to park. The trail is 2.4 miles round trip with medium to hard inclines getting up there.

Big Bear Camp Sites Around Big Bear Lake

Camping in Big Bear and the nearby San Bernardino National Forest. Before heading into the Forest, it's always advisable to stop in at the Discovery Center on the North Shore of Big Bear and pickup the necessary maps, permits, current fire regulations and a Adventure Pass.

The Closest Campground in Big Bear Lake

The Pine Knot Campground

is located across the street from Snow Summit Ski Resort. The campground has 52 site's for tent camping and Motor Homes. This is an excellent location and close to everything. All the roads are paved and we'll maintained. Pine Knot Campground is located just 6 blocks South of Big Bear Blvd. and Summit Blvd. Turn left just before entering the Snow Summit parking lot. $20/Night.

The Serrano Campground

is located on the North Shore right on Big Bear Lake. This National Forest Campground is also the largest place to camp on the Lake with a total of 132 Camp Sites including 29 RV sites with electrical, water and sewer hookups. Running water with bathrooms and hot shower's can be found throughout the Campground.

Hanna Flat Campground

The Hanna Flat Campground is located less then 3 miles from Fawnskin. From the main Y ( Fire Station) in Fawnskin, head straight North past the old Peterson Saw Mill. The pavement ends in less then a mile and sometimes known to be a little rough, so it's always a good idea to take it a little slow. Large Tow Trailers and RVs over 26' are to big for this campground. Water may not be a guarantee, so be sure to bring plenty with you.

Unfortunately the Hanna Flat Campground was directly involved in the Forest Fire that threatened Fawnskin last year and is still closed until further notice. I will update this blog after they open back up and I have a chance to drive up there and see what it now looks like. You can check for updates by calling the Discovery Center at 1 (909) 382-2781.

Big Pine Flat Campground

The Big Pine Flat Campground is located on the same road you would take to go to Hanna Flat Campground. Keep going for approx. 4 more miles. Services include water, portable toilets and trash collection. Four Horse Corrals are also available. This campground is operated by the American Land and Leisure with a permit by the National Forest. All 19 camping sites are available on a first come- first serve basis upon reserving a camping site. Holcomb Valley Campground

The Holcomb Valley Campground is in the middle of Big Bear's Most Treasured History that helped developed what we now know as the Big Bear Valley. In 1862 a Hunter by the name of Bill Holcomb went Bear Hunting farther then he had ever hunted before when he came across this Majestic Valley filled with Undiscovered Gold and singlehandedly started the Biggest Gold Rush in Southern California's History. There still remains a lot of History around the campground and always a chance of finding some more Gold missed by the earlier Gold Miners.

The Campground only has 19 camping spaces and all are on a first come- first serve basis. NO RESERVATIONS HERE! All vehicles must have an Adventure Pass (as with most campgrounds) prior to getting your camping spot. There is NO Water so bring plenty with you. Only $14/Night.

The easiest way to get there is to get on North Shore Dr. and turn North on Van Dusen Dr. (corner of the Landscape Rock Shop) follow that road which soon turns into a dirt road for 4 miles. Turn left at the T in the road and you will see it on the right hand side.

There's always a Party at the Bowling Barn!

The Bowling Barn in Big Bear lake is not hard to miss when your heading down the main drag on Big Bear Blvd. just North of The Village.

The Bowling Barn is Big Bear's one and only Bowling Alley (the alley oops) using the latest score keeping technology. This technology also has a spinning wheel that comes up on the main screen when you get a high score and has been know to generously give away prizes and award free games. Try a new way of Bowling where they dim the lights and the pin's glow in the dark. Glow Bowling is available after 8:30pm every night. There is also a few modern video arcade games lining the hall as we'll as a DDR Dancing Game for those of you who like to dance.

If your up for some real Dancing, The Bowling Barn also has a large Lounge with a full Bar where they frequently have Live Entertainment and Karaoke nights. The Lounge also has a few pool tables, a large screen T.V. and an outside deck on the side of the Big Red Barn. It's always a lot of fun and always seems to attract a good crowd of family oriented folks with something to do for all ages.

Super Bear Arcade

The Super Bear Arcade Center

is conveniently located in the middle of The Village of Big Bear on Village Dr. When you first walk into the Super Bear Arcade it kind of reminds you of stepping back in time when pinball machines were still Hot and Space Invader's was the New Video Game on the block.

Super Bear Arcade dates back to 1977 which I'm sure some of those games were there when they first opened. They also have some other classics such as (lol, I cant seem to remember the correct name at the moment but it's where you throw the balls up the ramp and get a bunch of tickets) There is also Air Hockey and a few pool tables located towards the back.

SuperBear has also kept up with the times on a few newer video machines mixed-in which adds to the appeal of the more recent games. The DDR Dancing Game (Dance, Dance, Revolution) always seems to have a line of people waiting to spend a Dollar so they can dance. Between my two kid's, I think I have already paid for that machine all by myself.

Watch those Quarters

As you might expect, with so many of the games going on 40 years and older, it's not uncommon to have problems getting the older games to correctly work. Sometimes they don't like it, but be persistent and they will either credit the machine or refund your quarters.

For You Older Kids

We'll it just so happens that the famous Chad's Bar is right accross the street where you can keep an eye on the front of the Arcade. Depending on the age of your kid's, it's sometimes nice to unwind a bit and give them a chance to [hopefully] burn off a little energy.

Big Bear Golfing

The Big Bear Golf Course is owned and operated by the Big Bear Mountain Resorts which also owns both Snow Summit and Bear Mountain Ski Resorts.

Big Bear Golf Course is a 9 hole Mountain Course located in the Lower Moonridge Area with the Club House accross the street facing Bear Mountain Ski Resort. The Golf Course was first built in 1921 as a very early addition to Big Bear Resorts. Playing golf at an elevation averaging over 7000', most Golfer's see an immediate improvement on their over-all driving distance as it fly's Thur the Clean Mountain Air.

The Entire Big Bear Mountain Golf Course

Basically covers the Lower Moonridge Valley floor surrounded by Mountain Views on all side's. The course length is 2,750 yards with a Par 35 ranking.

Swimming Areas in Big Bear Lake

In all the 22 miles of shoreline around Big Bear Lake there is only one public swimming area located at Meadow Park on the South Shore. In addition to the closed in swimming area with lifeguards on duty, Meadow Park also has several picnic and barbecue areas, softball field, tennis courts and two different playground areas.

The BEST Swimming Area in Big Bear Lake!

The Best Place To Go Swimming in Big Bear Lake is right next to China Island on the far western side of the lake. China Island (aka Treasure Island) is the only island on Big Bear Lake that still has several small China Hut's built right into the granite boulders that were used by some of the Chinese People that helped build the Big Bear Dam nearly 100 years ago.
The actual swimming area is the large granite boulders sticking out of the lake on the left side of China island approximately 30' away.

There is several places on the rock outcropping to jump in the lake from. Depending on the water level of big Bear Lake, you can jump anywhere from 5' all the way up to approx. 30' high. If your one of those daring folks that just cant resist jumping from the highest point, your best bet is to jump on the side looking right at China island. There is a very large boulder down there on your right hand side which is not always visible when the lake gets full, so make sure you jump straight out and to the left.
If your really stupid, err I mean Adventurous and want try jumping from the other side facing the Cabin on the Shore, just be sure nobody is swimming down there or another jumper isn't about to jump from a lower level. You have to take almost a running start to clear the first rock sticking out and you CANNOT see below you til it's to late. Take a good look at the boulders beneath the water level first which you can see and pick your spot very carefully. This really is not advisable as there are plenty of other good places to jump into Big Bear Lake that are much safer.
Getting to China island without a Boat can sometimes be a challenge if you do not find one of the few parking spaces on the Highway that's available. Coming from the Dam and heading towards Big Bear, the road takes an immediate right and goes a few hundred yards before it takes an immediate left. A few hundred yards further the road veers to the right again and just past this point is the parking lot on the other side of the road. The parking spot only holds 8 to 10 vehicles Max. so it usually fills up fast especially on really nice hot summer weekends.

Once you find a parking space, follow the trail down towards the Lake until you come across the dirt road approx.75 yards. Go to your left on the road for maybe 20 yards and you will see another trail on your right. Follow that trail for maybe another 100 yards and you will definitely know when you get there as it looks like Mother Nature properly formed the ultimate swimming area in amongst huge granite boulders.
China Island itself is private property so it's not advisable to swim out there and jump from the rooftops, oops, did I say that, but all the other rock outcroppings and all along the bank heading North is all fair game. Also if you zoom into the picture of the Satellite you can see a sand beach just to the right on the other side of the cove. This is also another great swimming area (especially for the little ones) as we'll as a good place to dock your boat and have a barbecue along Big Bear Lake.

Without a doubt this is the BEST swimming spot on Big Bear Lake.

Alpine Slide-Magic Mountain

The Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain is Big Bear Lakes largest Amusement Park

Keeping consistent with this Four Seasons Community, Alpine Slide is open all year long and changes with the Seasons with the things to do there depending on the time of year your visit Big Bear. The main attraction at Alpine Slide is the quarter mile long bob-sled ride that snakes down Magic Mountain. Ride the ski chair to the top of the Mountain and get ready for a ride you soon won't forget. Check Out The Videos Below for a first hand experience going down the slide.

One word of advise if you plan on riding down the bob sled multiple times and get a little more daring each time. There is a very good reason they have you sign a release form before they let you on the ski lift. People have been known to have some serious wrecks coming down the cement rails, including me.

I was racing my Son on the side-by-side tracks and knew the only way I had a chance to keep up was to go all out from the very beginning. About a quarter of the way down going threw one of the steeper curves, the bob sled rode all the way up on the wall and I just knew I was going to fly off the track. Instead I went sideways and basically came down on the the concrete track on my side til I finally came to a stop. To make a long story short, I still have to this day (2 1/2 years later) a large part of my arm scared that looks like a bad tattoo. From what I understand, it's a frequent occurrence of big people trying to Not act their age and forgetting how to use a brake.

Tubing At Alpine Slide

When Winter starts to set in they open up the tubing area on Magic Mountain where you ride the Magic Carpet Uphill Lift to the top of the tubing area. For $25 you can go tubing til your hearts desire and go down the Mountain as many times as you'd like. They have also installed snow making machines just in case Mother Nature decides not to co-operate and guarantees there will always be enough snow to go tubing down.

Water Slide at Alpine Slide

When the Summer sets in, it's time to go water sliding down one of two different water slides available. A little small if you ask me considering they have plenty of room to expand, but on those hot Summer days high up in the Mountains of Big Bear, it sure feels really good when you go splashing into the pool at the bottom. Single water slide rides on either slide will run you $1 per run or you can get an all day pass for $12. it a lot of fun and a good place to take the kids to run off some energy.

Other Activities at Alpine Slide

Alpine Slide also has Go-Cart's on the premises as we'll as a 18 hole Miniature Golf Course. Inside the main building is a few video games and a snack shop for a quick bite to eat. The sign says they also have Horseback Riding but I have yet to ever see a Horse anywhere near there. This must of been before they built several Multi-Million Dollar Homes on the top of the Mountain over looking Big Bear Lake.

All in all, it's certainly no Disneyland but if you have some youngsters with you, this is a great activity to take them to, or even better, a great place to drop them off for a few hours if they are a little older.

Fishing in Big Bear Lake

The Fishing is second to none in the San Bernardio Mountains of Southern California. With 22 miles of shore line and several different species of fish, your sure to catch just what your looking for.

Guided Boat Tours around Big Bear lake

Taking a Boat Tour is a very popular way to take in the beauty surrounding the Entire Big Bear Valley and explore the many coves hidden around the Lake. Most are guided tours that give you what amounts to a History lesson of how Big Bear Lake came to be, and the many Celebrities that have called Big Bear home.

The first tour boat on Big Bear Lake is the Big Bear Queen docked at the Big Bear Marina right on Paine Rd.

Boat tours start at 12pm, 2pm and 4pm daily throughout the summer months. The cost for a 90 minute Boat Tour of Big Bear lake is only $15 for Adults and $9 for children 3 to 12 years of age. You can also take advantage of the Big Bear Queens Sunset Cruise is every Wednesday and Saturday night from June til labor day. The Queen is also available for private rental with a capacity up to 55 people. Perfect for any special occasion or even a wedding out in the middle of Big Bear Lake.

The next Tour Boat available in Big Bear also happens to be the largest Boat on Big Bear lake. The Miss Liberty is a massive replica of the old paddle wheel style boats along the Mississippi that made it's 2500 mile journey to Big Bear in 2007 from the Florida Deltas. The Miss Liberty is docked at the Pine Knot Marina just North of the Village. The large double decker boat has a seating capacity of 125 people during it's 90 minute tour of Big Bear lake. The ships Captain is we'll informed about the History of Big Bear as we'll as a few Celebrity Lakefront Homes that they narrate throughout the Boat Tour. The last but not least Tour Boat is the Famous Big Bear Pirate Ship docked at Holloway's Marina in the Boulder Bay area. The pirate ship (named the 'Time Bandit') is perhaps the most recognizable vessel that sails the waters of Big Bear Lake.

The Time Bandit is an authentic replica of a Spanish Galleon Pirate Ship built at 1/3rd the scale of the original Ship. The Ship was actually built by a father and Son team down the hill which was completed in the mid 70's. The Ship was used as a tour boat for many years in the LA Harbor and in the Newport Beach areas before making it's final trip up the Mountains to Big Bear Lake. The roughly 100 mile trip took a whopping 2 1/2 days and numerous permits before making it to it's final destination to Holloway's Marina where it has called home ever since. Always be on the lookout during the 90 minute tour because at any given time they have been known to shoot the authentic cannons off that can be heard half way across the Lake.

The Mountian Ski Resorts of Big Bear lake, California

Is the Very BEST place to go skiing and snowboarding in the winter time for all of Southern California Residents. The two Ski Resorts in Big Bear lake, Snow Summit and Bear Mountain Ski Resorts, located right in the heart of Big Bear Valley, making it easy access to go Skiing for thousands of Southern California's residents within a 2 hour drive of either Los Angeles or Palm Springs. Big Bear lake is also only a short 3 hour drive from Las Vegas, Nevada.

Combined, both Bear Mountain and Snow Summit cover more then 430 ski-able acres with 26 Ski lifts and 80 total runs to choose from all with 100% snow making capabilities. The Big Bear Ski Resorts is one of the few Resort Communities with this snow making capability that is not dependant on Mother Nature to insure a successful Ski Season with plenty of fresh powder. As long as the Weather stays relatively cold they have an unlimited supply of water being syphoned out of Big Bear Lake to make as much snow that is needed, which then returns back to the Lake in the Spring when the snow melts.

Both Bear Mountain Resorts are unique in their own right and depending on your experience, you will find just the type of skiing/snowboarding that's right for you. As you can probably imagine, if are planning to visit Big Bear on just about any weekend during the Winter and especially the Holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years) it's advisable to order your Ski tickets online in advance prior to making your plans as they frequently sell out during these times. It's also a good idea if you do not get to the slopes early on these days before the parking lots fill up, just park at one of the overflow lots in Big Bear and save yourself a lot of wasted time when you could be out there skiing or snowboarding.

Bear Mountain's first over flow for parking is located in the lower Moon-ridge area prior to turning on to Country Club Blvd. If that's already starting to fill up just turn back around on Moonridge Road and drive back 1 mile adjacent to the Big Bear Chateau. Most of the over flow ski parking for Snow Summit is located on Fox Farm Rd. behind the K-mart on Big Bear Blvd. going towards the Big Bear Choppers new building. Shuttles continue to run throughout the day.

Snow Summit Ski Resort:

Snow Summit Resort is probably a little more Family oriented if your taking the whole family skiing. Don't get me wrong, there is a few runs up there that will give just about any advanced skier or snowboarder a good run for your money, but over-all your family might have a better time skiing here especially if you are at the beginner to intermediate ski level.

Snow Summit also has night skiing on Friday and Saturday's til 9:30 p.m. if you just didn't seem to get enough during the day time. it's usually not as busy and it definitely is an experience all it's own.

Bear Mountain Ski Resort:

Bear Mountain Ski Resort is located at the base of upper Moonridge and is considered one of the most progressive ski areas in the Country boasting the ONLY Super Pipe in all of Southern California. Bear Mountain also has 150 different sized jumps as we'll as 80 jib's within the Ski park. Bear Mountain Resort has the highest and steepest runs in So. Cal at 9500 ft. They do have a large learning area for the beginners, so your family can still have a Great time irregardless of your skiing ability.

Renting Skis and Snowboards in Big Bear lake

Both Bear Mountain and Snow Summit Resorts have Ski and Snowboard Rentals at each location, but as you can imagine, they are usually very busy during the peak times and you could potentially be wasting a lot of valuable ski time standing in line getting fitted for your equipment before you can hit the slopes.

Best Advice To Get Your Moneys Worth if you do not already own your own set of Skis or a tricked out Snowboard, is to plan ahead the night before and rent your Ski equipment from one of the Several Ski and Snowboard Rental Company's within the Town of Big Bear Lake.

Moonridge Zoo

The Moonridge Animal Park is nestled at the base of Upper Moon ridge across the street from Bear Mountain Ski Resort. Unlike most Zoos, the Moonridge Zoo is more of a hands on type where you can get very close to most Animals living there. Some of the Animals at the Big Bear Zoo include Black Bears, Bobcats, Mountain Lion, Coyotes, Red Fox, Mule Deer and several variety's of large Eagles and birds just to name a few.
The MoonRidge Zoo also offers Daily Feeding and Animal Presentations if you plan your trip just right. The Animal presentations are held daily at 12p.m. Noon (Depending on the Weather) were the Zoo Keepers surprise the audience with a selected Animal they bring out of their cage for a very up close (sometimes hands on) and personal look. The selected animal's could be anything from a Raccoon to a Bald Eagle. The daily feeding tour's where the Zoo Animals are often very active starts at 3p.m. daily in the Summer time and 3 pm on Saturday and Sunday in the Winter time.

The BigBear Zoo also has one of the finest Gift Shops of souvenir's and local Big Bear Artists Work in all of Bear Valley.

The Animal Park for the most part survives on admission fees and donations to keep the Zoo open and continue helping several abandoned or injured Wildlife Animals rescued within the San Bernardino Mountains.

Big Bears Animal Park now is in the process of raising Several Million Dollars that it needs for relocating the Animal Park to a site on the North Shore of Big Bear Lake, right across from the Discovery Center. The Park's lease at it's present location expired in February of this year and is currently in limbo with all the bureaucratic BS that they are having to jump through before they can start moving the Animals. The property has already been sold with Development plans already in the works.

Moonridge Animal Park is one of Big Bears Greatest Treasure's and it's very existence is being threatened. If your looking for something to do in Big Bear lake and would like to do something good for the Community at the same time, then consider visiting the zoo in Big Bear on your next visit to the Valley.

The Discovery Center in Big Bear is the Outdoor Educational Center for the entire San Bernardino National Forest located on the North Shore of Big Bear Lake, Ca.

Located within the Discovery Center Property is the 2,700 sq/ft Adventure Outpost loaded with everything you will need before heading out into the National Forest. The Adventure Outpost has the Very Best Selection in the entire Big Bear Valley of books about camping, biking, hiking, four wheeling and of course skiing. They also carry several different types of maps for every outdoor activity throughout Big Bear Lake. There is also one of the biggest collections of souvenir's for Big Bear and the surrounding Mountains.

A good idea before heading out into the Mountains to make sure you have your current Outdoor Adventure Pass which can also be purchased at the Discovery Center if needed.

It's not uncommon to run into hikers and backpackers that are hiking on the Pacific Crest Trail which crosses right through the Big Bear Valley. The pacific coast trail runs from the Mexican border due West for 2,650 miles all the way to Canada.

Just a few of the things the Discovery Center offers is Adventure Passes, Hiking and Trail Maps, Forest Road Maps, Camping Information and Permits as we'll as customized Group Tours back into the National Forest.

Depending on when you Visit Big Bear Lake, the Discovery Center offers a variety of Guided Tours for your Family to enjoy. Choose anything from a half hour Nature walk and learn about the native plants and Wildlife in the Valley, or Hiking up to the Top of the Famous Butler Peak Fire Lookout with spectacular views of the San Bernardo National Forest.
