By the way, of the total number of cases, about one-third of them have been reported in the good old U.S. of A.  So maybe that means it is even safer to travel internationally than it is to stay here - something to think about, and maybe even use when you are trying to convince that sceptical spouse that your dream trip to Fiji (which only has two reported cases) is a good idea.

The Original Farmers Market

Back in 1934, during the dark days of the Great Depression, two entrepreneurs proposed an idea to E.B. Gilmore, whose father A.F. Gilmore had struck oil on the family farm in 1903. The idea that Roger Dahlhjelm and Fred Beck suggested was to open a Farmers Market on a small patch of the land that already housed Gilmore Stadium and Gilmore Field. So in July of 1934 a dozen farmers paid 50 cents each to set up spaces and sold produce out of the backs of their trucks.

Fast forward 75 years, and today the field and stadium are long gone, but the little Farmers Market that stared with a dozen growers has grown into one of Los Angeles' most popular meeting places. "Meet me at Third and Fairfax" has become standard among Angelenos familiar with this grown-up market.

So why go there now? Because the OFM is throwing the biggest birthday party in its history. Starting on July 13 and running all week, the Market will have music, food, family crafts, and more. The big day is July 16, starting early at the iconic clock tower, with a giant birthday card, a cake in the shape of the clock tower, and many of the other trappings that you would expect at a celebration in L.A.
