Just as construction of the new Xavier Institute is completed, the beautiful Emma Frost shows up at the gate and bargains her way onto the team by locating the missing Professor X for them. She is able to detect him on the mutant island of Genosha by using Cerebro, the mutant tracking device. Wolverine immediately launches a full rescue mission to recover their lost mentor, but infiltrating Genosha will mean going up against one of the X-Men’s most dangerous enemies: Magneto. As the Brotherhood stokes the fires of mutant hysteria, Sen. Kelly tries to gather support for his Mutant Registration Act. Meanwhile, Wolverine is finding it difficult to get the X-Men back together. Most of the team is still unaccounted for, and those that Wolverine can find refuse to join the new team. The disillusioned Rogue has even taken up with the Brotherhood. But when the Brotherhood plans to go after Sen. Wolverine Makes an Appearance Decades ago with Agents of Atlas

One of the fun things they’ve been doing with Wolverine comics since deciding that he’s at least a hundred years old, is going back in time and looking at some of the things he was involved in “as a youngster.” For instance they’ve had him dealing with Captain America; they’ve had him dealing with Blade back in old timey England. (Blade is supposed to be about a hundred years old too, but he’s a vampire and that’s the way those things work right?).

But who the hell are the Agents of Atlas? Well they’ve characters from those old comics who’ve recently been activated again for fun and profit. Not unlike a lot of old time comic books the “team” is really a mismatch of characters. I mean when you think fantastic four, you say ok matching outfits and similar goals and histories. You think Avengers, you think about similar levels of powers similar goals and personality types. But the Agents are just “weird.” They’re a team created in the 70’s but supposed to be from the 1950’s with a Gorilla guy (called Gorilla-Man) who is a regular man but the body of a Gorilla. A robot, but OLD SCHOOL robot. The Submariner, Namor’s cousin Namora. The creature Venus and Jimmy Woo. Jimmy is really the only “agent” having been with government and all.

So this special issue has them run into Wolverine back in the day before he had is adamtanium installed, so he’s just a tough old field agent mixing it up in weird situations. But basically it’s just another case of Marvel using Wolverine to bolster an obscure comic into the limelight. And that’s cool too. And they did eventually tie the Agents of Atlas into the current Dark Avengers series.

Wolverine’s Son is Now an Avenger

Did you know Wolverine had a son? Well, hell, nobody did. But this year, to make absolutely sure, every single base in all aspects of Wolverine’s life are covered to make sure the tidal wave of Wolverine Origins are covered they’ve given him a bouncing baby boy. And to make things more interesting they have also given the son a few special traits

a) Made him an adult

b) Made him hate Wolverine

c) Made him an Avenger

Oh, and they’ve also given him claws, but see, that’s something you would have expected right? But as the storyline of “Dark Avengers” plays itself out things have gotten weirder. Norman Osborn is now in charge of the Avengers and he has essentially replaced all the good guys with bad guys. And Wolverine’s son has been shown to be a bad guy; with a history of callousness, mercenary work and a general bad attitude. Not so different from dad right!

But don’t forget about Laura! Who’s Laura, you ask? Why that’s Wolverine’s “daughter.” Not really she’s a clone. Code name X-23 because it took that many trials to get the process to work right. But a FEMALE clone. See? That’s the twist! Oh comic books, always so clever. Well the big difference between the daughter and the son is the she has undergone the claw enhancing adamtanium process. But maybe something similar is in the works for Daken, the son’s name is similar to the 80’s metal band Dokken. But to learn more about that you need to be reading Wolverine Origins…

If the Movie Push is a Copycat, it’s of X-Factor not Heroes

So I finally got to see the movie Push a few weeks ago. I guess it originally opened WAY back in February, but I didn’t even know about it. And this is supposed to be my thing; comic books, movies or a combination of the two. But NOPE I didn’t know nothing! But let’s see, the reason I found out about the movie at all is because I recently came across the 4 issue limited series of comic books. Which were, in fact, kinda great. And somewhere on the books it referenced a movie and I was like WHAT. Oh my God, lets run over to IMDB and see what’s up.

But do you know what I found over at the movie database? Bunch of people complaining about the movie not only not being good but review after review talking about how it was like Heroes-the TV show. And I kinda see why they might say that-because they’re a similar powers aspect. But that’s kinda it! I mean some people have similar powers but it’s really nothing like the TV show. The movie Push is about random people with special powers using their powers pretty much for personal gain. A few of them seem to work for a government group. But, and let me be clear about this, you wouldn’t REALLY know what the movie’s about without the comics. And THAT is the true shortcoming of the movie. It’s an “art movie.”

I recently had a talk with a friend about how I’m planning to make my own super hero movie and the problem with most of them so far is that the movie producers REFUSE to make the movie like the comic book. Either they think they know best how to “make a movie” or they want to do something artsy like that poor stupid ass Lee who made the Hulk movie. It takes somebody like Rami who was a lifelong Spider-Man fan to make the Spider-Man movie right. So Push is artsy. I liked the movie-from a film making point of view; interesting, not overly defendant on effects. But then the director impressed me with his British gangster movie a few years ago. But as a super hero movie it was off. If he wanted to make an art movie he should have chosen Kandinsky as a subject matter.

But back to the COPYCAT issue. The current series of X-Factor features a couple of offbeat characters; Jamie Madrox and Layla Miller. And yeah, those two are basically the 2 stars of Push. This X-Factor started around 2005 so it’s POSSIBLE the movie just absorbed them. But hard to say; it takes a movie so long to get made it could have been on the shelf for 10 years. But I think not. I think somebody saw the weird dynamic of Madrox and Layla and said I’m gonna use that.

Photo from the NY 2009 Comic Con. The reason I love fan outfits so much is they’re usually so much better than what shows up in the movies. The Iron Man and Spider-Man movies being the exception they usually just look so inaccurate and bland in the movies. But I once saw some Comic con Green Lanters that were unbelievable. And this Deadpool is no exception. Yes it looks simple, but it’s accurate! There’s even a very good Catwoman in the background.

Oh, and at the last minute I just had to add this Domino and Spider Woman. Look how picture perfect they are!

The Fistbump of Wolverine and Spider-Man During Dark Avengers

Man, Obama’s influence is being felt everywhere these days and seeing this artwork of Wolverine and Spider-Man do a classic fistbump is definitely something we wouldn’t have seen during the Bush years. So as they say, “previously in Spider-Man…” all hell has broken loose. Spidey managed to put fist to face on Norman Osborn. Norman has become the de facto ruler of America-yes even Obama-seemingly.

But this state of affairs is driving Spider-Man crazy because Norman isn’t satisfied with just running things, he also wants to run his son’s Harry’s life. Spidey is now on the fence about how far he should take things. Another beating or something more serious. So he has a heart to heart with Wolverine. Who recommends a permanent solution. And it actually seems like a viable option…

It’s been an interesting year over at Marvel. About 12 months ago they let writer Brubaker kill off Captain America, and the aftermath of that has been “Dark Reign.” Which immediately followed “Skrull Invasion” which came right on the heels of “Civil War.” Hahahahahah. If you don’t read Marvel comics that must all seem like a bunch of words that have ZERO meaning to you, but trust me all it means is “interesting story lines.” It’s really not that much different that TV shows these days. Marvel (and DC) picks a theme or premise and has basically all (or most of) their comics touch on the topic. And it’s only these last few years that this sort of loose format has become a solid working model. And I guess I like it, the only downfall is these sort of all encompassing themes can really mess up a comic series you like if the theme takes things in a direction you DON’T like. Then, as a reader, you’re screwed. So look for more weird artistic depictions. We may even see The Thing playing basketball…

Communicating telepathically with Professor Xavier in the future, Wolverine learns that Africa is about to be wiped out – by Storm. A year after a mysterious explosion destroyed the Xavier Institute and broke up the weary X-Men, an embittered Wolverine has lost himself on the open road, haunted by the unexplained fate of the missing Professor X and Jean Grey. But his efforts to keep a low profile end when he’s brought back into the crosshairs of the Mutant Response Division (MRD) after rescuing a family from a fiery train derailment. When the family shows kindness to Wolverine, however, they’re arrested by the MRD, charged with harboring a fugitive mutant. Galvanized into action, Wolverine enlists the help of Beast and together they infiltrate the enemy’s lair, successfully liberating not only the innocent family, but a dozen captured mutants as well.
