New website - WorksofNick.com

I've been quiet around here, and that's partly because I've been working on a new website. After finishing A Girl Called Snort, I decided I needed a website that was more customizable and with which I have more experience, so I've been tweaking a Wordpress website.

This site will stay up for some time, still, but most of my updates will take place over at my new site: worksofnick.com. If you want to keep up with my various stories and progress, please head over there, drop a note, and subscribe via email or RSS.

March 31 - Timely Reflections

By Dr. Xayyachack

Alas, this entry must be short. Just today I received a letter from an associate to whom I had promised – nearly a year ago – to complete a project of utmost importance for him. Regretfully, and, I am ashamed to say, unsurprisingly, I had completely forgotten about this project the last few months and now find myself frantically working in the mansion laboratory to find the answer to my friend’s needs. I imagine this is the sort of stress many of my students feel the night before a paper is due, knowing their procrastination has placed them in a tense situation.

March 29 - Reality TV vs. Hiking

By Dr. Xayyachack

This afternoon as Robert was helping me tidy my private laboratory, he remarked, “You know something, Dr. X? I think living here in the mansion is sort of like being in one of those reality shows – the kind where a bunch of strange people are forced to live together. It’s kinda cool.”

March 21 - Home

By Bob Brown

I just came inside. It’s hard to see the stars here.

It was a long day. I finally took Lance’s offer to be his exercise partner, so now he can stop bugging me about becoming his exercise partner. He takes his weight training very seriously. I don’t think I’ve ever been this sore before in my life, even when I de-tasseled corn. For some odd reason I just felt the need to go outside. I sat in the backyard watching the ocean for hours. It started to get dark, but I just couldn’t leave.

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”

March 17 - Black Out

By Katrina Alexis

I have just come from one of the most entertaining episodes of my stay here in the castle. All day it snowed up a storm. I didn’t write. Delighted, I just sat in front of my window and watched it fall. I was going to go to the café for dinner as usual, but Judy was worried and pressed me to stay indoors. Dinner was a sad affair with everyone complaining about the weather.

“Isn’t it great?” I finally erupted as cheerfully as I could muster.

I think I see Cassandra’s concern now in placing locked doors on our wings, though I’m still not sure why the men are separate from the women. Anyway, I went to my usual café for lunch today. (I needed a break from the confines of my room.)

By Katrina Alexis

The room was alight with diamonds reflecting tall, ornate chandeliers. The long, pristine white table with its expensive dinnerware and silver candlesticks was surrounded by aristocratic men and women dressed in their finest black. Soft classical played in the background. Crystal goblets clinked. Hushed voices spoke in delicate tones. A twinkling laugh here and there melded into the conversation, creating the perfect banquet atmosphere.

March 10 - An Unsatisfactory Meeting

By Lance Valentino

Miss Talbot was not in a very good mood last night. I sat next to Bob at our weekly meeting, pointing discreetly to the other members and telling him a little about them. I thought it proper to give the boy a head’s up. He nodded, but he’d contradict me as well as agree with me, sometimes saying, “Dr. Xayyachack told me…,” or “No, I talked to her yesterday….”

I told Miss Talbot that she should not worry about introducing our new member to the Story Project, that I would do it.

“The good doctor already has the job, Lance. And stop calling him the new boy. His name is Bob.”

“Bob?”

She nodded smartly. “Yes. Robert Brown. Technically, it’s Robert Brown the Third. He’s from the Midwest. Don’t you have class soon?”

February 24 - The Sarah Paraphrase

By Sarah Smith

The meeting was today.

So, I was floored. It’s amazing how I sometimes project my feelings on certain issues upon my peers, and assume that they feel the same way I do. I guess I expected everyone to shoot down the whole poem thing, especially since we have so many applicants waiting to be considered. Why hold it up on one poet who was stupid enough to forget to include his or her name?

February 23 - The Poem, The Poem

By Sarah Smith

Oh, my gosh.

It’s the poem. The stupid poem. It’s ruling Ms. Talbot’s life, so now it gets to rule mine. For crying out freaking loud. Let me just say that the biggest mistake of my life was reading it and giving it back. Who does that? Why would I have done that? Oh, dear God in heaven, have mercy on my pitiful and tragically stupid soul.
