We have been working on our new unit Electricity in grade 9. We have looked at charge, current, circuits. We will start looking at resistance. Don't be surprised if their is a quiz.

For the past 2 weeks we have learned about mitosis and meiosis. Now we are expanding on this knowledge and we are going to learn about genetics, genetic disorders, mutations and disorders, and Biotechnology. Exciting Stuff!

The students have extracted DNA and on Wednesday will become DNA!

Science 9 is an amazing course. It unravels the mystery of the atom, explores the vast reaches of the universe (or multiverse?), electrifies us by learning about electricity, and explores how life is reproduced using the most amazing molecule of all - DNA. It sounds absolutely wonderful, doesn’t it?! It is Awesome!

Outdoor Ed Trip was a Success!

The Outdoor Education Club would like to thank the Saskatchewan Outdoor and Environmental Education Association and SaskLotteries for the $500 grant they gave us. It is greatly appreciated and it helped fund our canoe trip. All students had a wonderful time. Thanks again SOEEA and SaskLotteries!

Dear Peta White and Tina Krupski,

On June 10, 2010, twenty-two voyageurs pushed off on a 4 day epic adventure on Saskatchewan’s Churchill River system. One truck and one bus trundled their way to Devil Lake campground (north of Misinipe, Sk). The participants that spilled out of the vehicles were excited for adventure and were bursting with excitement. The 800 metre portage at Little Devil Rapids did not dampen their spirits nor did the 1 Km portage at Great Devil Rapids (the students mentioned that it didn’t seem as bad as the first one!).

We paddled on Hayman Lake, met a bear at Clark Falls, then on to Bellows Lake, and hit Walleye country on remote Weaver Lake.

Our band of adventurers then turned their bows South towards the 1 Km portage above Sluice Falls. It did not faze them. We reached Barker Lake and there were school groups everywhere! Yet, to our surprise Surf City was open. We had a blast!

At the end of the trip students did not want to leave. They had witnessed the beauty of the Churchill River system and fallen under its spell. These students reflected upon the importance of Saskatchewan’s freshwater supply and realized the importance of environmental stewardship through no trace camping.

As teachers we were proud to have witnessed such growth in our students. They came together as a team and grew in initiative and leadership.

Thus, it is with great pleasure that I thank the SOEEA and SaskLotteries for the $500 grant we received this year. The money was put to great use. The funds granted to us were used to pay for groceries (receipt attached). The students who benefitted from this grant are extremely grateful. You made a difference in their lives and helped them explore a part of Saskatchewan they had never experienced before.

I have attached the SOEEA Program Organizer Evaluation Form, Participant Evaluation Forms, receipts, and pictures of the trip (awesome!).

This week in Bio 20 we explored plants in detail. We observed mosses, ferns, gymnosperms, and monocot/dicots. We then spent Thursday working on our medicinal plants activity.

In Chem30 we explored equilibrium and did a lab that demonstrated its effects.

Currently in Bio 20 we have explored unit 1 and now we are exploring the diversity of life. We have looked at viruses, bacteria, protists, and fungi. Today we started our tour of the wonderful world of plants.

In Chem 30 we have explored Reaction Rates, Heat, and we are almost done Solutions. Tomorrow we will have a performance test to see if we can put all that theory into action.
