In the late 60s, Dick Orkin conceived and wrote the Chickenman radio series. He was Public Affairs/Production Director at WCFL, the “Voice of Labor” radio station in Chicago. Dick Orkin, award-winning voice actor and commercial radio producer, gained fame in the 70s with his radio spots which NEWSWEEK dubbed The Advertising Theater of the Absurd. - From BFMDigital on Youtube

Okay. It’s not really a ranch. Not in the traditional sense. Just like The Home Depot isn’t really a depot. They just call it that. That’s the way it is with us. We call it The Famous Radio Ranch. But it’s really more of an eye-catching two-story building on Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks, California.

So, back in the 1950’s, the Remington Rand company built the famous UNIVAC computer. This amazing machine was said, at least in this ad, it could solve our weather predicting problems. Hum, what, 60 years later, the Weather Channel still sucks at predicting my weekend!

Having lived in the Chicago area all my life, I found these two films fascinating. So sit back and enjoy Chicago from 1948!

WGN, the “Superstation” out of Chicago doesn’t understand the power of YouTube or probably and modern technology. I would love to add video clips of some of the classic shows from the 60’s and 70’s but WGN is way too short-sighted to understand how much the internet can bring to their station. They still have that old school mentality of  “This is our propery, so no one get’s to see it unless it can makes us a few dollars”

It’s a shame that those great starts like Ray Raynor and Bob Bell can not be enjoyed by a younger generation like other from the same time period are do to websites like Fuzz Memories TV.

What up WGN and do what’s right!

Once upon a time there was UHF television! This was before cable. For those that don’t know, UHF TV was were the lower class of stations existed. In Chicago we had WFLD - Channel 32, WCIU - Channel 26, and WSNS-channel 44. These stations still exist today but the low budget programing doesn’t compare to the way it was back in the 70.

On WFLD, there was a cheap but very humorous chow called Screaming Yellow Theater starting Svengoolie (local actor Gerry G. Bishop). Dressed in a bizarre, hippy style costume, would show old, “classic” horror movies, and do comedy during the breaks. The show ran from September 18, 1970 until late summer 1973. A writer for the show, Rich Koz, does a version of the show today, but for us old timers, it just isn’t the same.

On Aug 2, 1973, Gabe Kaplan, TV star on the late 70’s show, Welcome Back Kotter, and now a Poker play and poker TV announcer, appeared on the show. All the segments are on YouTube buy Fuzzy Memories! Here is the opening!

A friend, Marty Zivin added some information about Jerry.
“Jerry has been in San Diego since he left Chicago in the mid 70s. He owns a popular local restaurant and hosted a morning TV show. In 1988 I snagged some video of his show…sorry no sound effects (oww oww oww).”
