On February 12th, the school hosted its first annual “MORP” dance and it was a complete success!

About 400 students attended and about $1000 were raised making it possible for a scholarship to be given to a student at the awards ceremony in May.

The junior class purchased about 200 tickets making them the winners of the class contest and allowing them the privelage of a special dedication at the dance.

Mr. Daryl’s performance of pants on the ground was a highlight of the night.

“[The students] loved it! He got right in the middle of them and it was fun. He had a good time too.” said NHS sponsor Mrs. Stanley.

The response from the students has been very good. Freshmen Lea Whitely and Taylor Ramsey can’t wait for next years dance and had a blast this year.

There is one thing they would change though,

“Definately more people. They thought it would be boring but it was fun!” said Whitely.

Stanley is very happy with the outcome of the dance, “I think it went great for the first time we had ever done one.”

We can excpect another great dance from them next year. Stanley thinks that next year she will have a better idea of how to run a dance when that time comes and that making “MORP” the first dance of the year will draw a bigger crowd.

“We were supposed to be the first dance but it changed because of Homecoming. Next year when we have the first dance we will have better sales.”

This dance will be an annual event so, if you missed all the action this year there will always be next time!

Sophomore AVID students went on a field trip to the University of South Florida on Jan. 4 2010. 13 students were chosen to go on the trip to see how the campus worked and how to get into USF.

“We got the opportunity to tour the campus and learn about the different programs the school offers,” sophomore Emily Finck said.

The students explored dorm rooms and some of the school buildings.

“My favorite part of the trip was seeing how students at USF actually lived,” sophomore Deanna Countermine said.

While they were visiting USF they learned about the many different programs that are offered for certain departments.

“I really enjoyed learning about the different programs that were offered for science,” Finck said.

AVID is a fourth- through twelfth- grade in the academic middle for four-year college eligibility. The acronym AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.

“Avid helps me out a lot in school,” Finck said.

Some of the AVID student are even thinking about enrolling at USF after high school.

“USF is full of opportunity and an all around wonderful campus,” Finck said. “I may even consider attending.”

From Feb 15 to Feb 19 Always Best Choices came to Citrus High , to talk to the health class taught by Coach Haines about the best choices that teens can always make in there lifetime when it comes to drugs, alcohol and sex.

There where four representatives from ABC here the two main speakers were Pete McCumber and Kaitlyn Neely who enticed the classroom with stories, games and startling statistics such as two Americans every hour contract the HIV virus and over a million teens are impregnated every month.

They always ended the class with a special candy to be given to the class ’smarties‘ for being such a smart class ‘dumb dumb lolipops’ for making sure not to make dumb choices and on the last day they gave ‘Treasure’ Candy’s for being treasures.

“There were four of them I think and they just told us about the choices we should make,” freshman Edmund Brooke-Meer said.

The ABC team stays for one week in the health class then goes to a different school coming back every nine weeks, the health class itself only takes up nine weeks of a students schedule.

Tucker Max, a notorious womanizer, has become famous for his promiscuity and his tendency to ostrosize women. His book, I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell, has made him famous. In the book Max recounts all of his scandalous nights out leading to shameful hookups and mornings of complete regret.

I find it hard to feel bad for all these women that he’s been with. His reputation is widely known so it was obvious that they were only one night stands. In some cases, women become involved with him because of his reputation! They want to be another story in his book or a post on his website.

While I don’t support the fact that Max uses women and treats them like animals, it cannot be denied that his follies make for some intersting stories and gut-busting laughs. Some stories are more innocent than others and may not include women at all. Like, “The Famous Sushi Pants Story.” This story just consits of Max trying to outdrink someone at a bar and it leading to an akward situaton between himself, a cop and some sushi.

What I find amusing about Max is that he actually prides himself on all of the women he becomes intimate with. He writes down women that are interesting to him for whatever reason, such as a midget, and goes on an adventure to find the woman in question and then scratches the girl off the list and lets her slip from his mind forever, not remembering names or anything about their personality.

I can’t bring myself to understand why women still insist on getting themselves into his trap. Any sort of relationship with him always leads to heartbreak. The only safe relation you can have with Tucker Max is if you’re his friend. And a guy.

”They said my last name wrong when they called me up,” Poteete said. “It was embarrassing.”

While waiting for awards to start there were guest speakers.

“There were different activities such as ballroom dancing, table edicate and humor in the work place,” Poteete said.” I was lucky enough to miss the ballroom dancing.”

Poteete and Santa Fe both were awarded ribbons for their project

“Our FBLA project was about convincing students to be a business teacher using the environment, the salary, and employment rate,” Santa Fe said.

Activity Day is a day when students are permitted to leave their classes early to meet with their club members.

“I thought all the the clubs would meet up together,” freshman Kristen Martin said. “I thought we would all do activities out in the football field or something.”

This is Martins freshman year in high school. This is also her first time participating in a club on Activity Day.

“I was really excited, but I did not know what to expect,” Martin said.

Students prepare for Activity Day in many different ways. Whether it be wearing your club shirt, or collecting club passes to get out of class.

This year the passes were not a little piece of paper with the students name and location. They were colored stickers that the students put on the back of their identification cards.

Student identification cards were mandatory to participate.

“I had to look for all my friends so we could go together,” Martin said. “I did not want to walk in all alone.”

Different clubs met up in different locations through out the school and the teachers or sponsors in charge were responsible for deciding how the time would be spent.

“We had to meet up in the cafeteria,” Martin said. “We talked for a few minutes, then we just had some free time to hang out with our friends.”

There is a wide variety of clubs offered to the students, such as Future Christian Athletes, Key Club, The Video Gamers Club, AIM, National Honor Society.

“I went to Key Club,” Martin said. “It is a good club to get community service hours in.”

Key Club was put together by Nancy Boudreau, the photography teacher at Citrus High. The Club is an organized way for students to earn their community service hours and participate in multiple fundraisers.

“I liked this experience,” Martin said. “It suprised me, because it was different than what I had expected and it was really fun.”

This year was sophomore Robbie Renaud’s first time attending a tractor pull.

“I have never been to anything like it,” Renaud said. “I went because it seemed kind of neat and a friend told me it was fun to watch. My favorite part was seeing how far they could pull the sled.”

There were all types of tractors, trucks and lawn mowers at the tractor pull.

“I really like to watch the old style tractors,” Hudson said. “The older they are the cooler I think it is.”

All sorts of people come down to the fair grounds to watch this annual event.

“It’s fun to see the way people are dressed,” Hudson said. “Some people are in tutus and others are in cowboy outfits.”

Renaud also enjoyed seeing the way people dressed during the pull.

“Some people were wearing the most interesting outfits,” he said.

Along with Personal Fitness, students are required to take Health.

Health explains the dangers of drugs, and alcohal.
Swan wanted to take personal fitness to learn more about her body and to get some exercise.

“I think all students should be required to take some sort of gym class,” said Swan. “It will teach them about their body and maybe help the obesity problem amoung young people in America.”

No matter what the reasoning, gym classes are always full of students.

Television (TV) Productions is a very important class for schools to have. Not only does it teach students the basics to running a news channel, but it also provides important news to the whole school.

“It is important for all high schools to have a morning show because it gives the students updates and information,” senior Bridget Enstrom said.

Ed Kilpatrick is in charge of the class and responsible for producing the morning show every day.

Enstrom is the computer editor and is in charge of the announcement slide show and editing the show itself.

Junior Julynnet (July) Castro Morales is also an active member in the class. Morales was the anchor, director, and video editor.

However, there are many other jobs available to students, such as camera man, the anchor, sound editor, etc.

“This is my first year in the class,” Enstrom said. “I really wanted to take the class because I am interested in the whole news production world.”

Although it might only be Enstroms first year in the class, Morales began it three years ago and never left.

Enstrom said that timing is the hardest part of working on the morning show.

“If one person if off timing, then the whole show is behind,” Enstrom said.

Enstrom recomends this class to anyone interested in any technology feild, because the class focuses on more than just productions of the morning show.

“This class will teach students how a news team works together,” Enstrom said.

The class also get to attend exciting event, such as news conventions.

Morales has been to two conventions in her three years of participating on the morning show, and enjoyed being a part of both of them.

“Conventions are lots of fun and they always have interesting speakers,” Morales said.

Enstrom and Morales agree that the class is a very fun, but important one. They have both learned technological and important life skills in the class.

“The class has really taught me a lot,” Enstrom said. “Especially about time management.”
