The Jackson Ski Touring Foundation Trails (and Beyond)

Our Inn lies just across the street from the base lodge of the Jackson Ski Touring Foundation, which since the early 1970s has maintained an outstanding system of cross-country routes in our picture-perfect New Hampshire village of Jackson via a special-use permit from the White Mountain National Forest and in collaboration with the town and dozens of private landowners.

The Jackson Ski Touring Foundation system accounts for more than 150km of both Nordic and snowshoe trails accommodating a wide range of skill levels and adventurous ambitions. The recreational possibilities are even more extensive when you consider that these trails link up to Appalachian Mountain Club routes in Pinkham Notch as well as the extensive backcountry winter trails of the White Mountain National Forest.

Courtesy patrols through the Foundation monitor the trails, there to give you a hand if you need it.

You can purchase one-day or multi-day passes to use the trails or opt for a season pass, which is a great idea for regular winter guests of The Wentworth. The Foundation rents all the equipment you need if you’re not bringing your own skis, poles, etc., including pulk sleds for hauling little ones about on the snowpack.

The Romance of The Wentworth

Romance comes easy here, what with the postcard-worthy charm of our Jackson Village (complete with a covered bridge) and the inspiring natural vistas at every turn. But the broader setting itself is only part of the appeal: Our Inn itself is tailor-made for romantic idylls.

After all, our grand, European-style hotel is awash in architectural beauty, and furthermore its origin story is one of old-fashioned romance. James Trickey built The Wentworth in 1869 as a wedding present for his daughter Georgia and her betrothed, General Marshall Wentworth. Whetting Your Appetite: A Look Back at Thanksgiving 2018 at The Wentworth Inn

Wentworth Inn Executive Chef Brian Gazda is still developing his special Thanksgiving menu for this year, but you can get a sense of the culinary caliber and creativity that defines it each and every Turkey Day by eyeballing the multi-course magnificence he served in 2018.

From appetizers of forest mushrooms with caramelized onion and Vol-au-Vent or Slow-Braised Stroganoff of Pork to a second course of Chef Gazda’s Fall Harvest Salad or Cider Butternut Squash Bisque, the 2018 Wentworth Thanksgiving smorgasbord got off on the proper autumnal foot. The entrees, meanwhile, were swoon-worthy: Our happy guests tucked into everything from Maple Glazed Applewood Smoked Ham to a Hand-crafted Sweet Onion & Ricotta Tortello. It goes without saying Chef Gazda prepared a stunning turkey dish as a centerpiece main-course option for the proceedings: his Cider Brined Vermont Misty Knoll Roasted Turkey, to be specific, primed with an apple, sage, and cornbread stuffing and giblet gravel and accompanied by whipped potatoes, buttered bans, and a spiced cranberry compote.

The desserts—ah, the desserts—ran the gamut from a Maple Sweet Potato Pecan Pie (with whipped cream, of course) to an exquisite Apple Galette paired with salted caramel and vanilla ice cream.

The menu—the keepsake hard copy of which was graced by a painting by Eric Koeppel, a local landscape artist who was on hand to sign his works—included vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options, as usual.

Local produce featured heavily at last year’s Wentworth Thanksgiving—in keeping with our farm-to-table dining philosophy—and will do so again this November.
