Hugh Pickens writes “Ken Gaebler discusses a new way of hiring called ‘employment simulations,’ which are gaining popularity among high-tech firms that are seeking data from prospective employees that you can’t get from sit-down interviews. In a typical employment simulation, candidates participate in online ‘video games’ that leverage simulation software to determine how well candidates perform in actual job situations. ‘There are no questions about your former work experience and office habits. There’s simply a computer game. If you win, you get the job. If you lose, game over.’ As one example, call centers are very amenable to simulations because the work environment (a series of computer programs and databases) is relatively easy to replicate and the tasks that make up job performance are easy to measure (data entry speed and accuracy, customer service, multitasking, etc). Other employment simulation programs have been written for healthcare, insurance, retail sales, financial services, hospitality and travel, manufacturing and automotive, and telecom and utilities. But skeptics say employment simulators and other computer-based hiring models have some drawbacks. ‘Like any technology, the effectiveness of employment simulations is limited to the quality of the software and its accessibility to users,’ says Gaebler.”

New submitter jpwilliams writes “Gizmag reports that researchers at Sandia National Laboratories have tested a 10-centimeter bullet that can be fired from a smooth-bore rifle to hit a laser-marked target one mile away. The bullet ‘includes an optical sensor in the nose to detect a laser beam on a target. The sensor sends information to guidance and control electronics that use an algorithm in an eight-bit central processing unit to command electromagnetic actuators. These actuators steer tiny fins that guide the bullet to the target.’ Interestingly, accuracy improves with targets that are further away, because ‘the bullet’s motions settle the longer it is in flight.’”

Hugh Pickens writes “Marissa Taylor says the retail chains’ worst nightmare are consumers who come in to take a look at merchandise in-store, but use smartphone apps to shop for cheaper prices online. But now stores like low-end retail chain Target plan to fight ‘showrooming’ by scaling up their business models and asking vendors to create Target-exclusive products that can’t be found online. ‘The bottom line is that the more commoditized the product is, the more people are going to look for the cheapest price,’ says Morningstar analyst Michael Keara. ‘If there’s a significant price difference [among retailers] and you’re using it on a regular basis, you’re going to go to Amazon.’ Target recently sent an ‘urgent’ letter to vendors, asking them to ‘create special products that would set it apart from competitors.’ Target’s letter insisted that it would not ‘let online-only retailers use our brick-and-mortar stores as a showroom for their products and undercut our prices without making investments, as we do, to proudly display your brands.’ Target also announced that it had teamed up with a handful of unique specialty shops that will offer limited edition merchandise on a rotating basis within Target stores in hopes of creating an evolving shopping experience for customers. Target is ‘exercising leverage over its vendors to achieve the same pricing that smaller, online-only retailers receive,’ says Weinswig. ‘This strategy would help Target compete with retailers like Amazon on like-for-like products.’”

This article at Wired discusses how plant DNA can be used to make an almost unique code (1 in 1 trillion) for parts identification. A graphic shows some of the ways this could be done: bolts with DNA-marked coating, invisible bar codes, and fluorescing inks are some of the possible applications. In a similar but unrelated project, World Micro has a different solution to detect counterfeit items in the military that have been ‘blacktopped,’ where items have been re-surfaced to allow remarking.”
