My Review of Bez's Super Sun Concert

I have a dream that someday

I’ll be the Super Sun, will be the Super Sun

Prior to this concert, the only songs I knew by Bez were Super Sun and That Stupid Song. Even though I had his album, I never really took time out to listen to it. I knew he was good and super talented but was I sure he'd be able to pull of a concert at the Eko Hotel and Suites? Didn't think so. He is one of the coolest entertainers I have met so when the opportunity to attend the concert came, I decided to give it a shot. As a young Entertainment Journalist, I have been to A LOT of concerts and shows in Lagos and they ALWAYS disappoint. With this in mind, I decided to go for the concert not because I felt it will be mind blowing but because I felt Bez is one of the few good artistes in Nigeria and I wanted to support him 100%

I got to the concert and after doing all my interviews, I settled in to enjoy the show. I got in just as Waje was performing and it was super amazing. Seyi Shay took the stage after Waje. I thought she was high but apparently she just has a lot of energy. Omawunmi followed after her and as usual she killed her performance. She is an amazing vocalist and love the twist she gave to the songs. Timi Dakolo's performance was ok. Not too special but not forgettable. Praiz thrilled audiences with Rich and Famous. Tiwa Savage and Stan Iyke did their thing even though I thought Tiwa's voice was too powerful for his. After that Tiwa joined Cobhams for an amazing rendition of "Jesus Loves Me". I always used to think that Tiwa wasn't a good singer but after listening to her belt to the Jesus... hmmm... I have a new perception.

And now to Bez... I don't even have the words to describe this guy. His music is ART. Every single person on his band brings a unique flavour to the performance in EVERY song. There is so much attention to detail in their music and he tried to make every song a unique experience. Performances I loved were The Good The Bad The Ugly, Technically, More You, Stop Pretending, Zuci Daya, Super Sun and obviously That Stupid Song. (I can't even type. Still excited over the show)

A few observations though

1. Why can't we start a show on time?

2. Why do Nigerian ladies wear evening dresses to a concert?

3. Why was everybody forming calm and collected? I mean who sits down a a concert? I sat down too but it was with good reason. I did know all the songs to get me hype and all but I mean everyone just sat down and crossed their legs like they were watching the ballet. Oh well

Still it was a good show. Had an amazing time and it rocked totally. Bez you rock man!~!! Love ya!!!

Waiting for the next concert.

Finding Freedom

Do you love me?

Andrea looked at him hoping that he would give her an answer as soon as possible. She thought maybe if he assured her of his loven She might actually feel good about what just happened. Her gaze was fixed on him but he kept struggling with his clothes. Apparently, he was late for a meeting with his boss.
"I'll call you" he told her as he dashed out of her room.

Well, it has been 3 weeks, 4 days and 12 hours and she is still expecting his call. She is there sitting by her phone, alone.

Oh and there is Damon. Wannabe rock star. Loves the flashing lights and the parties and the fame. If only he can get that BIG BREAK and everything will be alright. People will notice him when he comes into the club. All the "cool kids" will want to be friends with him. His lifestyle will upgrade and girls will die to be his girlfriend. But until then, he'll keep struggling so that he can look cool on the outside and sleep with anything in a skirt that makes him feel a little bit more than a man.

In the end, the girls leave and he is left in his one room apartment, alone.

Question: When you look in the mirror what do you see?

Do you feel you are not worth anything? Do you feel ashamed of the person you have become? Do you dream of changing something? Do you wish you were a bit smarter or cuter, or taller?

What do you see?

Truth is we can have surgery to alter how we look but there is no surgery that can fix a wounded soul. We can get clothes to disguise our imperfections but when the clothes come off and are in front of the mirror, those imperfections stare right back at us. We can know all the "right" people and party with the "right" crowd and have the fat bank account but at night when they leave, you are back at square one.

What do we do?

Love yourself. When you wake up every morning look in the mirror and say "I love you" because it is only when we start to love ourselves we find freedom. We free ourselves from the chains that people have put us in. Those that told us we were not good enough, or smart enough or wise enough. We free ourselves from all the negativity that came from different life experiences. You have to love yourself, because Someone loved you so much to give His precious gift for YOU! You do not need anyone to give you self-worth. You do not need to look for love in a kiss or a one-night stand. All you can do is love yourself. Be kind to everyone that comes your way. And live life to the fullest. Give yourself a treat. Dance when no music is playing. Pray for a friend. Start a conversation with someone you have not met before. Do not worry about fitting in or getting someone's approval.

Love God. Love Yourself. Love Others as Yourself. Then you will find freedom.

While I am no saint, a lot of people in my close circuit feel that I am a good boy and can do no wrong. While I love that assertion, truth is I have got a dark side...

R.I.P Natina Reed

Natina is dead.

I was a huge fan of Left Eye back in the day and you could not have been a fan of Left Eye without knowing Blaque. They made awesome music in the 90s. Starred in Bring it On with Gabrielle Union.

Oh and there was I'm Good from the Honey Soundtrack.

Natina was the rapper in the group. The one with the attitude. The one who reminded everyone of Left Eye.

Her birthday was supposed to be today but she was hit by a car on Friday as she was crossing the street.

I pray God will comfort her son and those she left behind.

She will be missed.

The knock on my door interrupted my wandering thoughts. I had been gazing at the ceiling for 2 straight hours. Thoughts of murder, kidnap and even suicide had filled my mind as Florence + The Machine was blaring from my speakers. If Depression and Anger had a love child, I would be that child. The door to my room opened and my mum came in. She looked at me and at my room and I could see the tears forming in her eyes. She picked up a torn picture from the pile I had made on my bed and shook her head.

"I hate seeing you like this" she said, her voice breaking

I sat up and pulled her down and gave her a hug.

"I am fine mum" I whispered in her ear and wiped the tears from her eyes.

"Jumoke's mum is here. She wants to see you"

"I'll be down in a bit"

My mum stood up and walked out of the room looking back one more time before closing my door. I wasn't in the mood to see Jumoke's mother. What does she want to say? What does she want from me?

I am sure you are lost now so let me bring you up to speed. My name is Ejiro. Jumoke was my best friend. We had been best friends since Primary School. We always had each other's backs.. or so I thought.

Fast forward to 3 years ago, I started work at an Advertising Agency and I met Chidi. He was an Investment Banker and was everything I (thought I ) wanted in a man. We started dating and he popped the question 3 months ago. I was happy. Finally, I was going to get married and live happily ever after. So I thought.

Turns out, Jumoke my supposed best friend was just a b****. Turns out for the past 6 months, she had been sleeping with Chidi, BEHIND MY BACK!!! Isn't it funny? We watch movies and we see something like this happen we go "that aint ever gonna happen to me'... Well, it just did.

Anyways, turns out Jumoke is pregnant and in her words "I can't have an abortion. It is a sin"... Oh please! So what was she doing when she was screwing her best friend's fiancé?

I stood up from my bed and went downstairs to meet her mum. The woman was just there rambling and saying something about God wanting us to forgive one another. My mind was far away. Many thoughts were running through my mind as I kept rubbing the stone on my engagement ring.

"Are we done here?" I asked her. She looked puzzled as I cut her short when she was saying the creation story or something.

"Ejiro I am just..." She started

"Mrs. Ademola, I am asking again are we done here?"

She heaved a sigh "yes"

"Thank you ma" I stood up, grabbed the keys to the car that Chidi bought me for my birthday. I had to get to his house. We have unfinished business.

As for Jumoke, she don do her own. She play her game well oh. No wahala. 1-0

THE TALKAHOLIC: Love, Pain, & The Dancefloor EP. What is the concept behind the name for the album and what in turn inspired the whole project?

DESTINED UNIVERSAL: I came up with the concept of LPD about a year ago. The name of this project reflects its overall sound and message. It is very self-explanatory once you listen to the record. All of the songs talk about love and pain, and sonically this is a dance project.

LPD is a true account of all the things the modern day young person faces concerning love and relationships. I personally believe that we all fall into the same cycle when it comes to love. No matter who you are, where you come from, who you love… that struggle to find the “perfect” person is universal. In music today, I feel a lot of artists talk from a fantastical approach in regards to relationships. I want to be one of the first artists, male artists at that, to present a contrast to the fiction pumping out of our airwaves.

All of the songs featured on this project, and every project I release, are inspired by either my own personal experiences or experiences of others that I’ve witnessed first-hand. I wanted to give people a glimpse of the artist I am now, rather than the artist I was when I first came into the industry. I’ve grown so much since then and I wanted to share my experiences that I’ve had that brought me where I am today, whether it be about love, relationships, coming of age, loving yourself, or discovering who you are. I just feel people are more perceptible to relate to you when you’re talking from love’s standpoint, and that’s what has brought about this EP.

THE TALKAHOLIC: From your first single till now, how have you grown as an artist and a performer?

DESTINED UNIVERSAL: If anything, I have definitely grown more into my artistry. When things really started to jump off the first time around, it was all about capitalizing on the attention and not so much focusing on the QUALITY of music I was putting out. “LoveLife” is the prime example of that. Although the single did wonders for me and has brought me this far, I feel that it could have been so much better and more impactful if I had really take my time with the song. My focus now is more on the quality of my music and not so much on how soon I can release it. You cannot rush good music, and the music I release here on out will reflect that. This new single is more of my redemption, which is why I am really excited about it.

THE TALKAHOLIC: Talk to us a bit about the new single?

DESTINED UNIVERSAL: I cannot quite tell you the name of the single just yet (for leaking purposes), but it is definitely an empowering track. It is very different from my previous single. Whereas “LoveLife” talks about the struggles of being single, this new single celebrates the independence and freedom that comes along with the ending of a relationship. I think we have all been in situations where we have felt like we gave all that we could give to a person. So when the relationship ends, we’re comfortable with that because we did everything we could. That is what this new single is for me.

THE TALKAHOLIC: How will you describe your sound?

DESTINED UNIVERSAL: My sound is a variety of things: pop, R&B, soul, alternative… I think my sound reflects all of the music that inspires me. I listen to just about everything and that’s what communicated through my music. Although this project is a dance record, I don’t believe that it sets the overall tone of what I will sound like throughout my career. But I have had so much fun breaking out of my comfort zone and working on LPD. It really has shown me my potential as an artist.

THE TALKAHOLIC: What is your creative process like?

DESTINED UNIVERSAL: Writing sessions and recording sessions are usually VERY intimate for me. When writing a song, I relive the moments I write about. And because I’m so passionate/focused when I’m writing, it can get a little dangerous. Sometimes reliving my past can take me to a very dark place and I will get depressed for two or three days even after writing and recording the song. It has gotten a little better now that I am learning to control it, but it used to get really bad. Before I step into the studio to record, I usually listen to artists who cater to the type of song I am recording that day. If I am recording something up-tempo and fun, I listen to JoJo. If it is something a little more emotional and slower, I’ll listen to Gary Go of Jessie J. Ballads and extremely personal songs usually require a lot of Stacie Orrico. These are just things that allow met me to set the bar for the overall session.

THE TALKAHOLIC: Who are your musical influences?

DESTINED UNIVERSAL: I have gone on record before to say this before and I do not mind saying it again… If there had not been a Stacie Orrico, there would be no Destined Universal. Out of all of the music I have been acquainted with, she’s is the only artist that has been able to touch, inspire, and motivate me in ways I cannot even begin to fathom. I’m also influenced by a lot of Fred Hammond, Kirk Franklin, Yolanda Adams, Kid Cudi, Gary Go, John Mayer, James Morrison, Justin Timberlake, Timbaland, Aaliyah, Missy Elliott Jason Mraz, Whitney Houston, Nina Sky, P!nk, Christina Aguilera… I could go on for days. There are just so many artists that I look up to and hold I high regard.

THE TALKAHOLIC: What are the challenges of being an independent artist in America?

DESTINED UNIVERSAL: Wow… well I think the biggest challenge would have to be financial support. A lot of the things that you have to do as an independent cost a lot of money. Photo shoots, music videos, studio sessions, touring funds, marketing, management, A&R…. It all adds up VERY quickly if you’re not signed by a major label. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. It just makes a need for sacrifice and a little discomfort. But as long as this is something you love and have the talent for, you’ll definitely experience the benefits of your sacrifice.

THE TALKAHOLIC: What do you want the fans to take away from this new project?

DESTINED UNIVERSAL: I seek to empower, inspire, influence, enlighten, and motivate everyone who hears this project. Hopefully someone will feel empowered enough to break the cycle, rather than adhere to it. I also want my fans to be proud of me. This project was a risk since day one, and I’d love for my fans to believe it was a risk worth taking.

THE TALKAHOLIC: What non music projects are you involved in?

DESTINED UNIVERSAL: I am still the Artist Ambassador of SUPERCUTS’ “Rock the Cut” program so I am proceeding with that.

It has been a lot of fun going through different looks and I love the fact that I can be as creative as I want to. I am closing in on a couple of clothing endorsement, so definitely keep an eye and ear out for that. I am very excited. I have a junior novel series that I am looking to publish either sometime after the EP release or the tour preceding it. I will release more information on that as we progress with that project. Right now, I am definitely looking to join/partner with foundations encouraging the youth and independent arts. I’m made so much noise within the past year, and I definitely want to help other indie artist receive more recognition.

THE TALKAHOLIC: Final word for your fans

DESTINED UNIVERSAL: I just want all of you to know how much I love you and appreciate your support. It has been a crazy ride so far and I know things are only going to get crazier from here, but as long as I have you guys with me, I know I’m going to be just fine. I hope you all enjoy the new single.
