Adobe Announce Flash 10 For Android

Adobe has announced that Flash 10 will be making it's way to the Android platform by the end of the year. In an announced at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, Adobe revealed that they plan to release their first full-fledged Flash multimedia player for smartphones by the end of 2009.

"We've made a lot of progress, but there is still a lot of engineering work to be done," said Anup Murarka, director of partner development and technology strategy for Adobe's platform business unit.

Adobe are expected to demonstrate the Flash Player 10 for smartphones beta during the Mobile World Congress event.

A lot of the best applications for Android is made by Google themselves so when Google announces a new Android Application, we pay attention. This new one from Google is called My Tracks which serves as a GPS tracking application. Specifically:

My Tracks records tracks of outdoor activities using the phone’s built-in GPS. It shows these tracks on a map and presents live statistics, including an elevation profile. And here’s the best part: it lets you easily share your activities with friends and the world using Google Maps, as well as archive your training history with Google Docs.

You can just download the application from Android Market and be on your tracking way! No dongles necessary, no additional desktop software required. Here’s a specific list of things that can be done with My Tracks:

Record and visualize GPS tracks while running, hiking, biking, skiing — or any other outdoor activity

GPS Navigation Comes To The Android G1, TeleNav

One of my absolute favorite apps on my Blackberry is my Sprint Navigation (powered by TeleNav). It's easy to use, quick, always correct and it comes as a part of my "Simply Everything Plan" so it doesn't cost a thing. Of course I've got Google Maps loaded, but TeleNav is much quicker. And i think G1 owners will find think out.

As of February 24th, G1 users can get turn by turn navigation through TeleNav's superior 3D one-click routing with more features than you can shake a map at. You'll get a 30 day free trial and after that you'll have to pay $9.99 a month.

Connect your laptop to the internet using the G1 as a modem

There are three ways you can use the internet connection on your G1 to surf the web on your laptop/computer: USB, Bluetooth and Ad hoc wireless network. I won’t be showing how to tether with bluetooth, but you can do a search for that online.

Tethering through USB

Prerequisites:
Firefox or any SOCKS v5 compatible browser
Root access to your G1 (follow this tutorial to get root access)

Once you have root access, you can connect your G1 through USB and use tetherbot.

Tethering through Wifi -ad hoc mode

Prerequisites:
A wireless card to scan for networks on your laptop/computer
Any internet browser
Either a G1 data plan or the tzones hack - check my previous post to get the tzones hack working

Turn off wireless on your phone
Download tether-1.6.tar and place it in /sdcard via USB cable
Unmount the sdcard and disconnect the USB
In your terminal type:

tar xf /sdcard/tether-1.6.tar

tether start

Now go to your laptop or wireless device and search for new wireless networks. Connect to ‘G1′!

To stop tethering:

tether stop

T-Mobile USA confirm more G-Series devices in 2009; likely to be HSPA

T-Mobile will definitely be releasing more G-series devices in 2009, almost certainly offering HSPA high-speed mobile internet access. That’s the not particularly surprising news from Neville Ray, senior vice president of engineering and operations at T-Mobile USA, who has confirmed that the carrier stands behind the Android-based smartphones in an interview with Fierce Wireless.

Ray also revealed that T-Mobile USA are looking to double their “3G reach” in 2009, referring to the amount of coverage the network offers. The device focus, however, will remain on handsets and consumer devices, rather than data cards, with Ray describing HSPA-enabled smartphones as satisfying a “sweet spot” for “compelling devices”.

“Our plan in 2009 is to double the number of covered POPs and top 208 million POPs. We expect to be in more than 300 cities by the end of 2009. That takes us to competitive parity in most areas of the country with Verizon and AT&T” Neville Ray

Unfortunately the interview did not press the engineer on specific details of upcoming Android-based devices, meaning that overall it’s slim-pickings if you’re looking for hot new information. Nonetheless, it seems to suggest that T-Mobile would be reluctant to pick up a handset such as the General Mobile DLST1, which in its current state lacks 3G support.

G1 Bluetooth Tethering

So you probably heard about Tetherbot for using USB and a socks proxy to "tether" your G1. Thats all well and good.. but if you have root, now there is a much better way.

Its pretty easy, especially with the binaries I'm providing below. (For those who want to do it themselves, that's awesome and I'll prolly give you way more help :) but you'll have to wait until I post the long version - maybe later tonight, maybe over the long weekend.)

Be aware, this will share any net connection available - 3g, edge, wifi.. (You can change the iptables rules to limit that accordingly, if you like.)

The next version will enable a dhcp server and autostart, which will let you use it without all the manual configurations below.

Short path:

Copy those files to the device. iptables and pand can go anywhere (I recommend /system/xbin) and bnep.ko goes in /system/lib/modules.
Make sure bluetooth is enabled (discoverable is optional - I'm going to assume you've alread paired everything. If not, do so now.)
Log in as root and insmod /system/lib/modules/bnep.ko, then run
pand --listen --role NAP
It will start listening and you can now go to your desktop and rescan - you should see "Network Access Point" or PAN or similar as a service now.
If you configure that with your OS tools, you should get another network device. For now, just set it to static IP. My examples will assume that the PC gets 10.0.1.5 and the G1 gets 10.0.1.1. So set 10.0.1.1 as the gateway and use whatever DNS entries you like (I use 198.6.1.4 and .6 - nice fast caching UUnet nameservers. YMMV.)
On the G1, configure the BNEP device: ifconfig bnep0 10.0.1.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
Enable ip forwarding: echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
Enable NAT: iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 10.0.1.5 -j MASQUERADE iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -j ACCEPT
ALL DONE! You can test from the PC by ping -c5 10.0.1.1 to confirm connectivity to the G1, and ping -c5 198.6.1.4 to test connectivity to the wide world.

T-Mobile G1 Gets Dissected

Many people have had their T-Mobile G1 for a week now and the honeymoon state has yet to wear off. We have been dying to see what is inside of this HTC but far too in love with it to tear it open. Luckily the fearless guys over at TechOn tore it open before they grew attached.

The G1 is made up of several components making it hard to reassemble. One thing that we really did not expect was the different color of the casing. It is actually white on the inside, suggesting that the G1 is coated with a paint or plastic of some kind. What does not make sense to us is the rumors that the white G1 was not sold because of the paint chipping. If the device casing is white, why paint it to begin with?

They have a picture that shows the G1’s antenna and GPS antenna which is made up of two separate pieces. The pictures also show a little glimpse of how the slider is constructed. One thing that TechOn stated was that the roll ball is the same as RIM’s BlackBerry roll ball. One other thing that they discovered is a second rumble pack on the inside. With all these shots of the G1 dissected, has anyone gained the confidence to go home and crack theirs open?

Google unveils Android platform roadmap, accepts patches

Google has published a short-term roadmap for Android that provides some insight into the company's plans for upcoming feature enhancements.

Support for localization in the user interface and application framework are one of the major goals. Google aims to complete a German translation by the end of the year and will add French, Italian, and several other languages early next year. This will make it possible for carriers to bring Android-based devices to market in other countries.

Another improvement that Google aims to deliver by the end of the year is support for the SIM Application Toolkit, a GSM standard that allows carrier-specific behaviors and functionality to be programmed into SIM cards.

A common complaint voiced by G1 owners is that the phone lacks an onscreen touch keyboard. Users have to flip the phone and slide out the screen so that they can use the hardware keyboard every time they input text. Google hopes to remedy this issue during the first quarter of 2009 by providing an extensible Input Method Framework (IMF). The IMF will make it possible to build software keyboards with text auto=completion systems. Google will supply several reference implementations and will also allow third-party developers to create custom input methods that can be distributed through the Android Market.

Prior to the official Android release, there was virtually no communication from Google about the development schedule or planned features. The availability of a feature roadmap at this stage is a very promising sign that Google is serious about making Android development more transparent and inclusive. Google says that the roadmap is being formulated with input from the user and developer community as well as project leaders and the corporate members of the Open Handset Alliance. Community members are encouraged to participate by discussing the roadmap and sharing suggestions on the platform mailing list.

Another promising sign is Google's early adoption of patches submitted by third-party developers. On the official Google open source blog, Android developer Jeff Bailey revealed that Google started accepting third-party code contributions from community members within hours after the Android source was released. It remains unclear whether users will eventually be able to install their own modified Android firmware images onto regular G1 devices, but Google has certainly opened up development of the platform and is allowing third-party developers to participate.

Although Google has lifted the curtains on the platform roadmap, questions still remain about the timeline for upcoming devices. Reports previously indicated that Sprint would be the next major carrier to bring an Android-based device to the market, but emerging evidence indicates that Sprint is dissatisfied with the Android platform and plans to delay its launch. In a presentation to the National Press Club last week, Sprint executive Dan Hesse told reporters that Android isn't yet "good enough to put the Sprint brand on it."

Early reviews are mixed and some critics don't view Android as a viable competitor to Apple's iPhone just yet. Much of the value that Android is poised to deliver is in the potential for a rich third-party application ecosystem. That value hasn't been unlocked yet because the nascent application development community is just starting to gain some momentum. Android could look a lot more appealing to Sprint when there are more programs available for the platform and when Google addresses some of the early problems and usability issues identified by reviewers and consumers.

Microsoft: Apple Not Interested in Silverlight, Flash for iPhone

According to Microsoft’s latest Silverlight announcement, Apple shows little to no interest in installing either Silverlight or Adobe Flash on its iPhones.

Thanks to the open source nature of Google’s mobile operating system Android, on the other hand, Silverlight on a Google-enabled phone is a prospective possibility for Microsoft — one they’d be eager to jump on.

“Basically where we’re at right now is we have talked with Apple,” Microsoft Vice President Scott Guthrie admitted. “We are very interested in being able to run [Silverlight] on the iPhone. At the end of the day, Apple ultimately controls what software runs on the iPhone. To date, what they’ve said is that at this time, they’re not looking to enable browser plug-ins like Silverlight or Flash to run on top of it.”

Microsoft’s perspective mirrors Adobe’s. However, according to Guthrie, Apple apparently hasn’t completely slammed the door to third-party vendors yet.

“They might in the future, but right now it isn’t an option for any vendor and so if they let us we’ll definitely come. Until they open it up to third-party plug-ins, like Silverlight and Flash, we’re both prevented from running there.”

The story is radically different for Google’s Android, the increasingly popular mobile operating system. T-Mobile has already sold out of its 1.5 million G1 phones, the first to run the OS, even prior to its release later this month. Thanks to Android’s open source license, third-party vendors will be welcome to build on top of the operating system and even contribute to the underlying technology. This means third-party applications like Silverlight and Flash will be welcomed on the mobile phone.

“[The] Google phone is slightly different.” Guthrie said. “It’s more of an open platform, that is something we’re going to continue to look at. Certainly as it’s gotten deployed and if sales are good we’ll definitely keep our eyes out and look at that in the future.”

In fact, because the Android mobile browser is based heavily on Google’s Chrome desktop browser, it may be sooner rather than later that we’ll be able to see fully operable Flash applications on a mobile phone. Flash already runs on Chrome, and Silverlight works on the latest developer build.

Android’s Login Is Cool, But Is It Secure?

I’ve been hearing a lot about Google’s innovative login feature for the Android phone, but only saw it today for the first time (Loren Feldman, who recently did some video of one, sent a screenshot).

Unlike other phones, which require a four digit number for unlocking, the Android simply puts nine dots arranged in a square on the touch screen, along with the words “draw pattern to unlock.” My understanding is that any pattern can be used as long as it touches at least four of the dots. Given the many, many different possible patterns (any math majors want to tell me how many?), it seems like a decent way to to lock and unlock a phone.

Except a very low tech side effect of the touch screen may be giving Google pause.

From what we hear, some people using the phone are noticing that the oil from a user’s fingers may leave enough of a smudge that the unlock password can be guessed at some of the time. Particularly since most people start their unlock pattern with the top left dot, and then move right or diagonally right. If you can see the smudge, it’s an easy guess what the unlock code is.

Of course users can always just wipe down the screen whenever they lock the phone. But my guess is Google offers an alternative, and more traditional, way to lock the phone as well.

Switched On: The T-Mobile G1

As Switched On exemplified in the frenzy of mobile Ts and primary Gs last week, much of the attention focused on the involvement of Google and comparisons to the iPhone. Searching Google for "'T-Mobile G1' Apple" yields over 6.7 million results on Google. Searching for "'T-Mobile G1' HTC" yields only 3.4 million.
Given that the phone is being branded "T-Mobile G1 with Google," the temptation is to say that HTC, which has long vowed to step into the white light from behind the white label, has failed to capitalize on one of the best branding opportunities in handset history. However, there would have been limits as to how much spotlight it could have stolen in the wake of media fascination with Google and one can have only so many brands listed in the name of a phone. Wireless carriers are among the biggest television advertisers, and Google is the biggest advertising powerhouse online. Together they will fund the G1 marketing push. The stakes were just too high for HTC to significantly advance its branding status with T-Mobile, which has used its carrier brand for such HTC handsets as the Dash, Wing and Shadow.
But there are more paradoxes in HTC's first Android handset.

HTC has committed to Android as the operating system of choice for its future consumer handsets. Yet the hardware design of the G1 -- with its PDA-like button layout and Leno-esque chin -- falls short of the attractive, sleek designs such as the Touch Pro that the company has recently delivered in its Windows Mobile lineup. In addition, Android was supposed to facilitate greater diversity and differentiation for handset manufacturers and operators to tailor their own experience, but the Android experience feels generic at this point compared to the engaging TouchFLO interface HTC has built atop Windows Mobile, or even the less flashy shell that T-Mobile put on the Windows Mobile-based Shadow.
The G1, true to its name, is a first-generation handset and there is benefit to highlighting the well-known Google's influence on this introductory device, but over time the focus needs to shift for Android to stand out from competitors and blend into the experiences that its partners want to create.
On the other hand, T-Mobile could hardly have played the timing of the Android card better, coming on the heels of some iPhone backlash. For while T-Mobile is the last U.S. carrier to introduce a handset with a large touch screen, it is the first to introduce a smartphone with those traits. In contrast, while Sprint had good success with the well-executed Instinct beating the iPhone 3G to market and certainly didn't hesitate to compare it to the first-generation iPhone, the Instinct simply couldn't conjure the platform war intrigue that Android carries with it.
Even better for T-Mobile, the G1 is essentially the launch pad for T-Mobile's 3G network service whereas the first iPhone could not take advantage of AT&T's HSPA network. As an exclusive, the G1 is the most important handset T-Mobile has ever launched and the carrier is gearing up for what it has described as its biggest marketing effort for a handset ever (which was also true for Sprint and the Instinct). However, depending on its exclusivity window for Android, the G1 will be more challenged to deliver for T-Mobile that prized benefit that the iPhone has delivered for AT&T -- enticing competitors' consumers to switch.

Recently we noticed that HTC’s Dream has surfaced on YouTube that claims to show the HTC “Dream” mobile phone appeared recently. The New York Times also says it should be out by Christmas; possibly as early as October. But still now no official announcement! The HTC Dream’s availability depends on how soon the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) certifies that the Google software and the HTC phone meet network standards. The NYT says that,” Executives for T-Mobile, the nation’s No 4 wireless carrier, declined to comment on the new phone except to say it was on track to offer it in the fourth quarter.
