John H. Johnson Graces New Stamp

The 2012 Black Heritage Stamp honors John H. Johnson, the trailblazing publisher of Ebony, Jet, and other magazines. The stamp will be issued on January 31 in Chicago and will be available for purchase nationwide.

Johnson overcame poverty and racism to build a business empire embracing magazines, radio stations, cosmetics, and more. His magazines portrayed black people positively at a time when such representation was rare, and played an important role in the civil rights movement.

His unwillingness to accept defeat was a key to Johnson’s success. When he was unable to buy a lot in downtown Chicago because of his skin color, he hired a white lawyer who bought the land in trust. Thus, Johnson became the first black person to build a major building in Chicago’s Loop, where Johnson Publishing still has its headquarters.

As Johnson’s influence, accomplishments, and fortune grew, he received many prizes and honors. He joined Vice President Richard Nixon on a goodwill tour of Africa and served as a Special United States Ambassador for Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) awarded him its prestigious Spingarn Medal in 1966. Six years later, in 1972, his industry peers named him publisher of the year — a prize Johnson compared to winning an Oscar. In presenting Johnson with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1996, President Bill Clinton lauded him for giving hope to African Americans during difficult times. A panel of experts polled by Baylor University in 2003 named Johnson “the greatest minority entrepreneur in American history.” That same year, Howard University named its journalism school after him.

The stamp, designed by Postal Service art director Howard Paine, features a color photograph of Johnson taken by Bachrach Studios. The photographer was David McCann.

The U.S. Postal Service has recognized the achievements of prominent African Americans through the Black Heritage series since 1978. This stamp honoring Johnson is the 35th stamp in that series, which highlights outstanding individuals who helped shape American culture.

The stamp honoring John H. Johnson is being issued as a Forever® stamp. Forever stamps are always equal in value to the current First-Class Mail one-ounce rate.

Where's The Pallet?

Pallets are part of the Postal Service's valuable Mail Transportation Equipment (MTE) and the cost of replacing MTE inventories amounts to nearly $50 million each year. The greatest expense is for pallets.

Recently Lakeland Downtown Station Regular Full Time Clerk Tom Palmer was delivering Express Mail when he noticed a large amount of USPS pallets stacked at a pallet company in Lakeland. When Tom returned to the Post Office he notified his manager, Ken Batastini.

Ken contacted the Inspection Service to inform them about the valuable equipment at a pallet retailer. Ken and an inspector visited the pallet company and verified that the pallets Tom saw were USPS equipment.

The company's management agreed to pull all of the USPS pallets, stack them neatly and assist with loading them on the USPS truck. When the pallets were loaded the total count came to 124.

Thanks to Tom's keen eyes and Ken's quick action, all 124 pallets were transported to the Tampa P&DC.

The Postal Service continues to search inside its network and beyond for MTE. Plant employees can do their part by collecting all MTE in each facility, stacking and organizing it to prepare for use or to provide to customers. Spot checks often can help uncover stockpiles of unused equipment. Any excess MTE must be returned to the Mail Transport Equipment Service Center.

USPS encourages employees to report MTE that is being misused, staged unnecessarily or located outside the postal network.

Mulberry Makes History With Purple Martin

Mulberry, Florida was the location of the official First Day Of Issue ceremony for the Purple Martin Stamp Envelope on January 23.

The purple martin is North America’s largest swallow. The realistic stamp art includes a large illustration of a purple martin perching and a smaller illustration showing the bird in flight.

The Purple Martin 56-cent First-Class Mail Forever Stamped envelope (45-cents for the stamp and 11-cents for the envelope) is now available at Post Offices nationwide, online at usps.com/shop and by phone at 800-782-6724.

“Bird lovers across America will be enamored with this stamped envelope,” said Suncoast Acting Manager Post Office Operations John Rhoden in dedicating the stamps at the Mulberry Civic Center.

Joining Rhoden in dedicating the stamped envelope were Mulberry Postmaster Carol Shirley, Mulberry Stamp Collector P. D. Sterling, Mulberry City Manager Dr. Frank Satchel, Jr. and Mulberry Mayor George Hatch.

How to Order the First-Day-of-Issue Postmark

Customers have 60 days to obtain the first-day-of-issue postmark by mail. They may purchase new stamps at a local Post Office, at The Postal Store website at usps.com/shop or by calling 800-STAMP-24. They should affix the stamps to envelopes of their choice, address the envelopes to themselves or others and place them in larger envelopes addressed to:

Lee Vista Annex Letter Carriers Janet Toro and Glendora Skinner hold their Eagle Awards, which are given to employees who donate $1,000 or more to the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC).

The employees at Orlando's Lee Vista Annex increased their CFC participation rate this year. Over 58% of the 100 employees contributed to CFC, which is a tremendous increase from 23% last year. Employees also increased the amount of pledges, donating a total of $12,362 to help others in need.

Gelmael was honored for his heroic efforts in saving two young boys. He pulled a three year old boy and his five year old brother out of the side of a mucky pond. The two were stuck and their mother had called the police to report them missing.

After freeing the youngsters, Gelmael returned them to their thankful mother. His quick actions likely saved both the boys’ lives.

Gelmael was recognized in front of his coworkers, who congratulated him on his heroic actions.

Stamp Prices Change On Sunday, January 22

The Lunar New Year Stamp Goes On Sale January 23, 2012, for 45-cents

Beginning Sunday, January 22, it will cost just a penny more to mail letters to any location in the United States, the first price change for First-Class Mail stamps (Forever stamps) in more than two and a half years. The new 45-cent price for Forever stamps is among price changes filed with the Postal Regulatory Commission and announced by the Postal Service on October 18, 2011.

Highlights of the new single-piece First-Class Mail pricing, effective Jan. 22, 2012, include:

• Letters (1 oz.) – 1-cent increase to 45 cents

• Letters additional ounces – unchanged at 20 cents

• Postcards – 3-cent increase to 32 cents

• Letters to Canada or Mexico (1 oz.) – 5-cent increase to 85 cents.

• Letters to other international destinations – 7-cent increase to $1.05

Prices also will change for other mailing services, including Standard Mail, Periodicals, Package Services and Extra Services. More information on the new pricing is available at

“The overall average price increase is small and is needed to help address our current financial crisis,” said Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe. “We continue to take actions within our control to increase revenue in other ways and to aggressively cut costs. To return to sound financial footing we urgently need enactment of comprehensive, long-term legislation to provide the Postal Service with a more flexible business model.”

While actual percentage price increases for various products and services varies, the overall average price increase across all mailing services is capped by law at 2.1 percent, the rate of inflation calculated based on the Consumer Price Index.

For business mailers, there is good news for First-Class Mail Presort mailers. When the new prices go into effect on January 22, the second ounce for presorted letters will be free. “This gives companies expanded opportunities to advertise new services and products to their customers as part of bill and statement mailings,” said Paul Vogel, president and chief marketing/sales officer.

And new for all customers is a 3-month pricing option to rent PO Boxes, perfect for people on the move and others who need a PO Box for a short time period.

All First-Class Mail stamps released in 2012 will be issued as Forever stamps. Forever stamps are always equal in value to the current First-Class Mail one-ounce rate.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.

Cape Coral Cup Is February 12

The second Annual “Cape Coral Cup” Miniature Golf Tournament to benefit the United Way through the Combined Federal Campaign will take place on Sunday, February 12 at Mike Greenwell’s Bat-A-Ball Family Fun Park, 35 NE Pine Island Road in Cape Coral.

Rounds of miniature golf will be played every two hours, starting at 10 a.m.

Sunshine Skyway Bridge Is A Priority

The U.S. Postal Service will issue a Priority Mail stamp in 2012 depicting the Sunshine Skyway Bridge located in the Suncoast District.

The bridge was one of the first major concrete-and-steel, cable-stayed bridges in the United States. Completed in 1987, the main bridge and approach spans stretch more than four miles across Tampa Bay and link the Gulf Coast communities surrounding St. Petersburg and Bradenton.

Renamed in 2005 after the former governor who envisioned its construction, the Bob Graham/Sunshine Skyway Bridge has been the recipient of dozens of engineering and design awards.

Joe LeBourgeois, Operations Support Specialist at the Manasota P&DC feels the bridge is a great choice for a stamp. "I have travelled over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge many times. It’s a beautiful example of engineering as art. The bridge is a highly visible Florida landmark, and an absolute necessity for travel between Manatee and Pinellas counties, "said Joe.

Rafalita has been in Kandahar, Afghanistan, for the last two years as a Logistical and Purchasing Specialist, providing support to the Forward Operating Bases (FOB).

After enjoying time with her family, Rafalita returned to Afghanistan on January 8.

Claims & Inquiry Clerk Frances McCord is pictured with her son, Tyriq McCord, at the U.S. Army All American Bowl. Frances, who is detailed to Complement and Local Services, is a rightfully proud mother. Her son is a nationally sought after college football recruit.

Tyriq McCord has been the focus of many national sports writers. He is described as an explosive defensive end; an athletic defensive end who also has the ability to play the tight end position or is quick enough to play linebacker; and, a passionate player who is a standout contributor on special teams.

Tyriq is a star defensive lineman for Tampa's Jefferson High School. He finished his senior season with 59 tackles and 11 1/2 sacks, as well as three forced fumbles and one interception. He also made 14 receptions for 276 yards and a touchdown while playing tight end.

Most services rate him as a four-star defender and consider him one of the best 20 defensive ends or linebackers in the country. He is the number seven defensive end for Rivals.com. Tyriq holds more than 30 BCS offers, including Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, TCU and Southern California.

As a live national audience viewed the U. S. Army All American Bowl, Tyriq recorded a 15-yard sack during the second quarter of the game. At halftime Tyriq announced, “I think I’m going to take my talents to South Beach," making a verbal commitment to the University of Miami Hurricanes.

Although Tyriq made a verbal commitment, his official visits will continue, with a final visit to the University of Southern California on January 20.

The official signing date to put college selections in writing is February 1, 2012.

Rural Carrier Martha Spring, works at Naples' Coco River Branch, delivering mail and good cheer to the community.

Martha was recently thanked for her service in a very big way. A columnist for the Naples Daily News, Virginia Russell, recently wrote an article thanking people who “treat every day like a holiday and give the gift of joy and service to the community all year-round.”

The writer's list was short and consisted of the Sheriff’s Office and three law enforcement officers, her doctor and the medical unit that treated her during a recent illness and Coco River Branch Rural Carrier Martha Spring.

She wrote the following about Martha:

I would also like to thank my mail carrier. My carrier is actually a lovely woman named Martha Spring. She moved to Naples 11 years ago to care for her 93-year-old mother, Rebecca Tufano. I wish I could be as consistently cheerful as Ms. Spring. She always has a smile on her face and a warm greeting. Ms. Spring does a lot more than just deliver mail. She adds a bright spot to our day, and my children and I often wait by the mailbox just to say hello to her. I’m grateful to her for making our neighborhood feel like a neighborhood.

Congratulations, Martha, for being the recipient of such heartfelt thanks and having that thanks published in the newspaper.

Who's Driving?

Revenue Drivers Mary Messina and Michael White have been promoted and will be leaving the Revenue Drivers Team. Both have been promoted to the position of Business Solution Specialist, which is a Headquarters position domiciled in Tampa.

"Congratulations to Mary and Michael. They were great Revenue Drivers and I'm sure they will be successful in their new positions," said Cathy Buchanan, Business Development Specialist and Manager Revenue Drivers.

The newest Revenue Drivers (above), Clyde Chapelle and Lorri Kayser, are ready to take those employee leads and turn them in to revenue.

Clyde is a Sales & Service Associate from the Lakewood Ranch Post office, who has been on detail as a 204B at the Braden River Post Office.

Lorri is a Rural Carrier from the Parrish Post Office, who has been on detail as a 204B at the Venice Post Office.

Clyde and Lorri are prepared to continue bringing in revenue. In their first week they closed sales from employee leads worth over $25,000!

When the Revenue Driver Pilot Program began on August 1, the Southwest Area set the Suncoast District's goal at $1,500,000 for the entire length of the program.

BDS Cathy Buchanan realized that Suncoast employees were submitting leads and the Revenue Drivers were closing the leads to bring in the revenue. She felt the goal was too low and raised the bar to $2,000,000!

The pilot program is still in full gear and the Suncoast District has already brought in over $3,000,000 in new revenue!

The Suncoast District is #1 in the Southwest Area's Revenue Driver Program.

Congratulations to all employees who submitted leads and to the Revenue Drivers for closing the deals!
