Ten years ago, I got the wild idea to put together The Starving Artist’s Guide to New York City. Was I naive? Sure. Did I think it would be successful? Maybe. But was I passionate about it? Hell yes! Everyone that I met had to hear about it. To this day, it’s still one of my proudest achievements. It took months of compiling, researching, and digging to put together The Starving Artist’s Guide. Well, here I am, ten years later. A little older, a little wiser, and I think it’s time to pull it off the shelf, dust it off and share some of the extra stuff I’ve learned about being a starving artist. Strap in and get ready for a ride.

Hey folks,
I’m putting on the finishing touches to the 2011 Addendum, and it will be available on 4/11/11. That’s next Monday. It’ll be a free download for the first 24 hours, so tell all of your friends as well! It’s loaded chock full of new ideas I’ve been fermenting for the last year or so, as well as places/people/events to check out this year.
Next week will mark the birth of something much bigger, as well…keep your ears peeled for that announcement also being made on Monday.
Life has been treating me rather well, and it’s safe to say that I’m busier, more creative and happier than ever. My best wishes to everyone that is witnessing the strange, beastly nature of the world these days…
Until next monday, carry on!

Well, I tend to agree. It was during the doldrums of winter that I got the idea to make my own wine bottle lamp to give my room a boost in light and make it a bit more homey. It was this lamp that had me branded “the dude’s version of Martha Stewart” by a friend that saw it. I’ll wear that badge proudly. The idea began to flourish when I wrote an email to one of the guys at Brooklyn Brewery and asked him if they would send me around 200 BB beer bottle caps to make the bottle lamp really look awesome. They came through and totally delivered. I bought a wine bottle lamp cork kit here.
Once it was completed, another idea struck me–I had a bunch of old LED Christmas lights up to no use, and I’ve always saved the old Brooklyn Brewery bottles that I buy once finishing their tasty and nutritious contents…
<img data-attachment-id="577" data-permalink="https://starvingartistsguide.wordpress.com/2011/03/08/i-love-lamp/ge-digital-camera-2/" data-orig-file="https://starvingartistsguide.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/gedc0061.jpg" data-orig-size="4032,3024" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"5.08","credit":"","camera":"A1230","caption":"R: 179 G: 255 B: 155 X:39852 Y: 0 S: 0 Zs: 6 Zp: 120 F: 750 I: 0 ImgVer:08.05.07.23","created_timestamp":"1209600506","copyright":"","focal_length":"22.5","iso":"200","shutter_speed":"0.947996","title":"GE DIGITAL CAMERA"}" data-image-title="GE DIGITAL CAMERA" data-image-description="<p>R: 179 G: 255 B: 155 X:39852 Y: 0 S: 0 Zs: 6 Zp: 120 F: 750 I: 0 ImgVer:08.05.07.23</p>

Thus, the Brooklyn Brewery Chandelier was born.

I couldn’t get enough lamps. It became a night of passionate lamp building and it was going on one o’clock in the morning. I also had an old Hitachino Beer bottle and a wierd old glass orb hanging around. Sure! That could be a lamp!

Another odd lighting choice was born. So for the cost of a few christmas lights, some twine to keep the chandelier up, a few extension chords and a bit of ingenuity, my little abode is lit to the max for the pennies it costs to use LED lights. The same thing can be done using old wine bottles or whatever you have laying around the house! Viva la Home Decor! It’s huge, and it took me a long time to put together. If you ever need to find any place around New York City that is cool, you’ll probably be able to find it here. I’m currently doing a few things, as always, including but not limited to: brewing a batch of strawberry Octoberfest, working on some songs to play at Path Cafe’s Thursday Open Mic night, editing a super secret project of which details will be released very soon, finishing up final edits for the 2011 Starving Artist’s Guide Addendum, and some other stuff too. I’m also going to update the LINKS section of this site this week. Stay tuned!

Hey dudes and dudettes,
Just about to relax and watch the 2 hour doc on John Lennon over at pbs.org and I wanted to give another little thing to the world. So at 11/11/11 at 11:11pm, I officially release the This Will Swallow You Whole Audio Book, read by yours truly. I think it’s pretty good, especially if you are someone who doesn’t like to read. When you download it, you’ll also receive a PDF file of the book for free. For those of you who are wondering what the hell ever happened to the 2nd edition of the Starving Artist’s Guide, have no fear: It’ll be out in February. TWSYW ended up getting fast-tracked because it was flowing like wine out of Jesus’ fingertips. Life has been pretty sweet for this old dude, and take it as good information that I’ve been working on some new songs and plan on getting some gigs together once the spring thaw begins. I might be releasing a new track called “Winter Jamboree” as a free little demo within the next week or so. It was a hoot to record, though I feel it needs a banjo, mandolin and a rowdy crowd to really sound complete; but hell, why not release it ( as well as a few other winter themed tracks.) Seeing as tomorrow I’ll probably have a snow day due to this blizzard, you might see some more goods in the very near future!

Peace and love!

Johnny
