Inside Look: MercyMe

“He’s like Buddy the Elf meets Forrest Gump,” says MercyMe singer Bart Millard of the fictitious namesake behind his band’s sixth studio album, The Generous Mr. Lovewell. “He sees the good in everyone and knows his neighbors enough to know their needs. Mr. Lovewell may not be the next Billy Graham, but he’s changing the world each day.”

“It’s working the way we hoped it would,” Bart admits. “People are taking the concept ten miles further down the road, trying to top each other’s random acts of generosity toward strangers, and leaving notes behind that say ‘courtesy of Mr. Lovewell.’ We want to see this become a movement that’s bigger than the record itself.”

Plans for the record first took shape last year after MercyMe returned from a poverty-stricken province in the Dominican Republic where the guys met children they sponsor through Compassion International. “We always heard ‘you come back different’ from a trip like that, and sure enough, it turned our world upside down,” Millard explains. “We came back disgusted with ourselves and what we had considered important in life. It was time to relate this to our audience—the church—and figure out how we might all do something about improving the way we love each other, at home or halfway around the globe.”

The message of committing to extravagant selflessness and faithful optimism threads its way through every song. In “Move,” Millard says he’s gonna move to a different drum no matter what life brings while his band pounds out an absolutely slamming pop arrangement reminiscent of artists from Maroon 5 and Beyonce back to the Bee Gees.

“It’s one thing to be kind to someone, to be decent,” Millard concludes. “But if we really believe we have this hope, then to stop short—to not be the hands and feet of Jesus—seems almost offensive. Our dream is for this album to inspire others to ‘pay it forward’ to the cross. It doesn’t have to be about major sacrifices. Just let your life become such that people know what you stand for.” In other words, open your eyes to others’ needs and be generous with God’s blessings.

Inside Look: Fireflight Interview

We had the chance to send over some questions to Justin Cox (guitar) of Fireflight. Here's what he had to say!

1. How did the band come up with the name Fireflight?
We came up with Fireflight as our name about 10 minutes before our first show. We were preparing to play all the songs we had (3 of them) for a youth group, when the youth pastor came in and asked us, "How should I introduce you?" We all looked at each other and said, "Give us a second." After a bit of discussion, Dawn said "I thought Fireflight sounded cool." So we all said "yeah" and that's how we became Fireflight.

2. Have you been to Maine or Massachusetts before? Any connection to the area?
We have played in Massachusetts at Six Flags before, about 2 years ago. Other than that, we don't really have any sort of connection.

3. It was great to have you at SoulFest this year - any thoughts on our time there?
We loved playing SoulFest the last couple of years. It's a great festival with awesome people. We had to pass on it for a few years because we were always out west when it happened, but thankfully, we've finally been able to play it for two years in a row!

4. What's your favorite part about touring?
My favorite part of touring is meeting people. We play tons of dates every year and sometimes it's hard to remember all the faces, but it's definitely my favorite still.

5. What are the biggest challenges the band has faced recently?
The biggest challenge we've faced lately is growth. It's a challenge because you have to find the right people with the right hearts to surround yourself with. Everyone that represents you on or off the road is a reflection of you, and we always want those people to know that our hearts are in this for ministry and people.

6. Describe the perfect audience at one of your shows (Standing/Sitting/Energetic/Attentive?)
I'd say the perfect audience is standing and energetic. We LOVE when people are jumping up and down, singing along with us and just showing us that they are feeling the music and the lyrics. That's priceless.

7. Favorite food?
My (Justin) favorite food is probably bacon. I would put bacon on just about anything. Including cupcakes, which I've had before.

8. Favorite movie?
Favorite movie might just be Talledega Nights.

9. What other music have you been listening to recently?
I've been listening to a lot of the new Disciple record, Write This Down, and Muse.

10. Favorite book?
My favorite book is still Blue Like Jazz. I love Donald Miller.

11. What's in store for Fireflight over the next year? Touring? Recording? Taking some time off?
Honestly, the next year could be just about anything. We'll definitely be touring, and we'll be doing some time off as well. We've been touring very hard for the last 5 years and it's time for a little bit of a break :)

NASHVILLE, TN – Sept. 29, 2010 – Premiere modern rock band Fireflight kicked off the opening dates of its anticipated “For Those Who Wait – The Tour” this past weekend with crowd-rousing performances in Richlands, VA (Sept. 23), Huntington, WV (Sept. 24) and Wilkesboro, NC (Sept. 26). Also featuring urban/hip-hop trend-setters Group 1 Crew and Canadian rockers Manic Drive, the 30+ city tour will continue across the U.S. from late September through early November before wrapping up in Venice, FL on Nov. 7.

Fireflight debuted nationally with 2006’s The Healing of Harms, producing two No. 1 rock singles with “You Decide” and “Waiting.” For nearly a decade, the band has remained tireless road warriors on the concert circuit averaging 140 shows a year. Fireflight is: Dawn Michele, lead vocals; Justin Cox, guitar; Glenn Drennen, guitar; Wendy Drennen, bass; and Phee Shorb, drums.

Front and center? One Dawn Michele. With all due respect to exceptional peers such as Paramore and Evanescence, not all female lead singers are created equal. Armed with an arresting voice that's drawn comparisons to Joan Jett and The Pretenders’ Chrissy Hynde, Dawn actually makes authoritative gut-rock sound beautiful. And her bandmates? With her every step of the way and, at times, elevating the proceedings. From the moment Fireflight’s new album hits speakers, one thing’s for sure: This is 2010.

An epic journey? In more ways than one. In fact, Fireflight’s first three albums have been a thematic travelogue of sorts. While the band’s debut emphasized resiliency amidst hardship, Unbreakable focused on emerging victorious beyond such difficulty. And For Those Who Wait? “This album is a maturation in understanding that sometimes you don’t appreciate why you’re on the path that you’re are,” Dawn explains. “A lot of times, we get bogged down thinking about things that we’re waiting for. As soon as I get my bills paid, then things are going to be great. As soon as my family member’s not sick anymore, then things are going to be a lot better. And when we do that, we totally miss out on what’s happening in-between now and our goal. God has times of waiting in our lives because He has something for us to learn. Hard things that happen, that throw us off of our plan, become the most important things in our lives because God will take them and use them to shape our character and who we are.”

“We pray earnestly that God will give us good songs that will be able to help people,” she says. “And He’s come through for us, especially in our weakest moments. That’s when we’ve really gotten the best stuff.” This awareness of God’s magnificence amidst personal weakness is a defining trait for Fireflight. It not only frames the band’s songwriting, it empowers Fireflight’s rejection of “rock star” entitlement and enables genuine relationships between the group and countless fans. “We work collectively as a band to answer every MySpace and ShoutLife question we get,” says the lead singer. “We believe first and foremost the Christian faith is relational. We try to show people God’s love, and you just can’t do that unless you care about them.” This manifests itself most directly as the band proactively interacts and prays with fans who “need to talk” after concerts.

This week we've been working on a mailing to churches across New England for our Fall Concert series featuring MercyMe, Newsboys and Fireflight. Special thanks to Christa and Kim for coming in to help stuff the different posters, bulletin inserts and letters into the packets along with applying postage, return labels, addresses and licking them all shut (just kidding about the licking, haha) Another example of how SoulFest wouldn't happen without the help of volunteers!

Hopefully your church will be receiving a packet soon! If you don't receive one and would like to put up a few posters or hand out bulletin inserts around your church/school/community let us know and we'll send some over. Just email Ryan@thesoulfest.com.

We’re glad YOU are here!

As you may know, SoulFest is the largest multi-day music festival in New England, but that is not what makes SoulFest unique. SoulFest is an event where thousands of believers come from across New England and the northeast to worship, celebrate, experience and discover more about True Love.

True Love IS the message of Jesus. Jesus came to reveal God’s love to everyone and it’s THIS LOVE that transforms us.   As we celebrate, worship, experience, and grow in our understanding, you can't help but hear Jesus say, “as I love you, love one another.” Loving one another, looking out after “the least of these,” is what Jesus is saying to each of us here this weekend. We encourage you to rededicate yourself and allow yourself this powerful opportunity to be transformed further as a soul-connected believer in True Love.

There is Music everywhere: Both the Revival stage and the Inside Out stage offer a fresh line up of artists who have come from around the world to share their songs. However, we don’t want you to miss experiencing the essense of SoulFest, best discovered at the more intimate stages. At the Mountain Top stage you can see a rare solo performance by Switchfoot’s Jon Foreman along with many other rare performances with Jason Upton, Matthew West and others. The combination of the breathtaking panoramic setting and the unplugged performances, make the Mountain Top Stage one of the most popular SoulFest experiences. While walking about the festival, check out the True Love exchange wall, located beside the Cross in the Revival Stage arena. This wall exists for those who want to put their love into practical action this weekend. If you have something to give, or if you have a need, [refrigerator, washer, dryer, computer, frequent flyer miles, car, guitar, etc… ] please pick up the provided heart shaped paper and write what you would like to offer, include your cell phone and city/state. Put your offering on the side of the wall called, LOVE. If you are in need of something, write that on the heart paper with your cell/city/state and put it on the side of the wall that says HOPE. This “Action” is quite fantastic.   Last year we witnessed many needs being met, some of a critical nature.

In keeping with the SoulFest Pledge (found on the back cover of the program) please be mindful of the 7 Walls of Intention as you walk past the main entrance.   Pause and consider writing a thought, a prayer request, your intention and hope for being at SoulFest.   Beyond that we encourage you to talk with all of the vendors, colleges, charities and festival partners represented here that have so much to offer. The Walk4Water, in particular, is another SoulFest life changing experience. Please don’t miss participating. Foundational to SoulFest is our beloved Cross ministry at the Revival stage, and the NEPC Prayer tent located on Grace Way. Please spend time with them, they are yours. Listen to your heart, let go and discover more about God's unconditional love for you.

This year at SoulFest our primary ministry partner and good friends, the Not For Sale Campaign, will be presenting us opportunities to experience further God’s love for us as we learn, commit and engage in action that reflects True Love. Not For Sale isn’t just about combating modern slavery here in America, and throughout our world, they are dedicated to God’s call to help those who are suffering from extreme poverty and the many dark ramifications these victims are vulnerable to. The Not For Sale Campaign not only exposes and rescues victims of slavery, they initiate and support several vital efforts to transition victims of slavery into a self-sufficient life that ultimately prevents them from being a victim again. The NFS team is here to help us better understand what slavery looks like and where it is.    As True Love Believers, we are automatically compelled to respond as Jesus would, to help truly set the captives free.   Their tent is located in the Revival stage arena. Please meet this dedicated and passionate team of True Love Believers.

Our deepest hope is that during the next few days, you will hear God’s call on your life and know more deeply that God’s love for you is unending, never-changing and unconditional, and, as this Truth washes over you, you will then hear what comes next….. “feed my sheep,” “the least of these,” “love one another,”   because that is the present day net result of being a True Love Believer and this is what we hope SoulFest 2010 will provide for you. We pray you continued wisdom, courage and hope on your sacred adventure, this week and beyond.

Coming from Indonesia, the largest Muslim country in the world, Bread of Stone was formed by two brothers Ben and Bill Kristijanto, they have answered the call to ministry through inspiring music. With a unique blend of rock, pop, and worship, their music takes listeners on a journey through the heights and depths of the human experience. When asked about the significance of the name “Bread of Stone," they state we are all merely stones that God turns into bread to feed the hungry and that without Him, no one can accomplish good in this downfallen world. SoulFest "Sneak Peek" Series #3: Sargent Avenue!

This week we want to highlight one of the bands playing on our opening day - Wednesday, August 4th - on two different stages. The group is called SARGENT AVENUE, and we have an exclusive photo and press release from the guys in the band!

Sargent Avenue
Produced by Sony/BMG recording artist Noah Henson of Pillar, Sargent Avenue in their short two-year history is by far the hottest up and coming rock band on the music scene today. With a legion of fans and one of the most electrifying live shows anyone has ever seen, Sargent Avenue has already performed and held their own with industry heavyweights The Devil Wears Prada, Family Force Five, Thousand Foot Krutch, Disciple, Decyfer Down, Fireflight, Wavorly, Superchick, DecembeRadio, Seventh Day Slumber, The Letter Black, Sevenglory as well as many others from today's hottest Bands.

To further add to the band's growing list of credits, they are currently preparing songs for two upcoming Motion Pictures. Sargent Avenue has also been featured at one of the nation's biggest music festivals, Michigan's "Big Ticket Festival," and last year the boys took Canada by storm, touring with The Chosen Youth Conference. Their tireless work ethic earned them a spot at New Hampshire's SoulFest 2010. The band will be releasing the brand new Noah Henson (of Pillar) produced Self-Titled EP in the Summer of 2010, with the full length album scheduled for a winter 2010 release. Sargent Avenue comes highly recommended and ready to rock.
