Well, this needs to be attacked from two angles. First, we need to accept that spending money is usually what causes us need to get more of it so we need to understand that the less we consume the less we will need to work or worry, and it happens to be great for the environment too. Secondly, we have to learn that jobs aren’t the only source of cash, and if you don’t understand that, then you are missing out on a huge opportunity to live the quiet, sedentary lifestyle you deserve.

Housing is usually the largest expenditure. If you rent your own apartment see if you can break your lease for 1 month’s rent and live someplace cheaper. Stay mobile, and keep everything portable so you can take advantage of better deals as you see them. Find out if there are live-in personal assistant opportunities out there. Sublet your place. Move back in with your parents. If you own, then sell, even if you have to take a loss. Or if that is not an option, rent out all the other bedrooms including the master and sleep in a den or one of the smaller bedrooms. Cast away everything you thought was important about having a place to live, because truly, being house poor can be like a prison.

If you have a car, sell it privately and buy something cheaper that you can afford in cash. If you’re worried about being seen as poor buy something really old and pretend you’re into collecting and fixing up old cars. Nobody will know one way or another, and they’ll think it’s cool that your car has character. Even if you have to save up money to sell your car because you owe more than its worth, having a car payment makes a huge dent in your monthly cash flow even for the upper bracket incomes.

Don’t nickel and dime yourself to death. A coffee here, a movie there, eating out every night, will eventually take what little money you have at the end of every week and make it nothing. Learn how to entertain yourself for free, or even better, make money while entertaining yourself.

Finally, if you are unable to find work there are plenty of ways out there to make money. You can sell your sperm, your eggs, or your blood. For the best bang for the buck, you can sell your plasma. Take advantage of people in the hot sun by selling bottled water that you purchased in bulk. Banks will give you money by opening an account to test out their services. Treasure hunt for things that people left behind at the beach or try online businesses like buying and selling domains or day trading. While being a slacker often means that ambition and hard work are out of the equation, there’s no excuse for not being able to make enough cash to get by.

I’m talking about day trading. While it can be stressful and sometimes overwhelming, day trading can be done at home, with months not years of education, and can be a source of full time income. Keep in mind that is not investing, but a job, so it must be treated as such. I have compiled a short list of beginner tips for getting started from other extremely successful day traders, but keep in mind, all of these strategies work but they can easily fail if applied the wrong way. While I’m certainly not an expert, the experience that I have proves that it can be a very lucrative business with very little time investment. Check out this list and then see if you’re still interested before diving in.

1. Nobody can predict the future.
No matter what anyone says, there is nobody that can singlehandedly predict the future price of a stock. Most stocks will go above or below a given historical price in the future, it’s just matter of when. IMO Price movements are caused by 1/3 rational investments, 1/3 emotions, and 1/3 randomness. This means that 2/3 of price movements are caused by factors other than the company’s performance.

2. Stocks can dive on good news, and rise on bad.
Companies can dip on good earnings reports because people expected them to be better, or they can go up on losses due to potential external factors such as the increased possibility of a merger.

3. Buy slowly, sell quickly.
Again, this is just personal preference, but dollar cost averaging is something investors utilize to lower their risk. If you happen to purchase an asset at the wrong moment you can set yourself up for huge losses, but if you ease into the position slowly you can get the average price over a period of time rather than risking buying an asset in a momentary rally or dip.

4. Don’t give it back.
There is a tendency to want to go back in and make a little bit more. This is why the house always wins in Vegas, because you will keep playing until you run out of money. If you make a really good move then just quit, and if you make a few bad moves, just reset, think about what went wrong and try again tomorrow.

5. Cut your losses and your gains.
Along the same thread as the previous message, before moving into a position consider where you’re going to cut and run in both directions. This will prevent irrational holdings of losing positions that could cost you more than you can afford.

6. The market bounces like a Yo-Yo and moves like a staircase.
While you can’t predict when the market will make drastic movements, you can usually time the pullback. Anytime the market shoots up or nosedives, there are investors who will buy or short (opposite of buy) knowing that nothing can go one direction forever.

I just saw an advertisement for Bank of America’s Get More promotion. In this new program they pledge to give you a $100 bonus for opening a new account, and charging something to your debit card within 30 days. You’ll need $250 to deposit in order to participate, but that’s a return of 30% over 90 days, or if you want to compare to interest in a savings account, an annualized rate of 120%  versus 1-2% for your standard savings.

1. Location, location, location.
Whether you’re buying a .com or a 4/3 on Park Place, real estate has always been driven by location, or in domaining terms, by the popularity of your name. Buying thousands of worthless names will not make you any money, so choosing the right names will yield the best return. How do you know what is a good name? Well, the easiest method is by googling components of the name. See the huge difference between the number of results for the key word “business” and the number of results for “paraguay”? The more results means that your domain has more potential for traffic which is essentially what the value in domains are.

2. Increase value.
If you have some experience in web design, making a basic website will help your domain greatly. It will increase traffic to the domain which is a key component of its price, and it will also show that there is some investment in the name, although like wallpaper, the new owner will probably tear it down.

3. Upsell.
Again, buying and selling the domain could be just one component of your business. If you could offer additional services such as hosting, web design, SEO optimization, etc, then you are way ahead of the curve and can increase your profit by offering these services as part of a “domain” purchase package.

4. Research.
Utilize websites that give you lists of expiring domain names to see what’s available, and check out recent domain auctions to get a feel for how much domain names are running, and which ones are in the most demand.

5. Pay Annually.
You should be paying anywhere from $7-$10 for a .com (I use Godaddy) and sometimes less for other types of domain names once a year. Do not do the multi-year discount as it will cut in half or more the number of domains you can carry at once.

6. Custom Parking.
Don’t use your registrar (companies that sell domains) for parking, and don’t pay for their monetization programs (click revenue) as they will not return anywhere near what they cost until you reach at least several hundred quality domain names. Use custom parking sites like Sedo.com for the greatest ROI.

Monkey Jar is the best of the online affiliate programs to date. It essentially is a huge affiliate consolidation program into one affiliate revenue source. Just add the stores you want in your “mall” and voila, you can make money shopping at the places you already shop at, such as Itunes, Amazon, StubHub, etc. The key to this is you invite your friends to open their own personal mall with whatever stores they already shop at. You get a piece of their sales as well, and if they invite members, you get theirs too.

I normally do not participate in affiliate programs as they usually benefit the company selling the product than the affiliate. However, one of the things I’ve learned is that the most successful affiliate programs have some kind of an edge that attracts explosive growth, and combined with a multiple level commission structure it is hard for me to ignore. Plus, MonkeyJar is new, which is the best time to get into an affiliate program.

Beachcombing is simply a term for searching the beach for something of value. Then you can sell it, keep it, or trade it for something else.

1. Get a good metal detector.
There’s a lot to this topic, so read up on it. Don’t forget headphones, they’re worth the investment.

2. Hunt anywhere.
It doesn’t have to the be the beach. It can be a vacant property (with permission from the owner’s of course), the side of a busy pedestrian road, or in the middle of the jungle where there is rumoured to be some lost treasure.

3. Buy a cheap contractor belt.
These belts are designed to be tough. They can be both protective of anything you find and resistant to the damage of sharp objectives.

4. Bring water and music.
You’re going to need to keep hydrated, but the good news is that you’re going to be burning lots of calories walking around!

While there are literally thousands of ways to save a ton of money, not everyone is able to benefit from that kind of advice. I’m going to provide a tip that I believe will help 90% of you. For the rest, go watch some Suze Orman.

Most of you watch television. You can’t really call yourself a slacker unless you do.

What if I told you there was a kind of DVR service out there, where you could watch unlimited amounts of TV online. And not just crappy TV with lots of annoying ads, I mean the same shows you watch on prime time, like Heros, House, and House Hunters *drool*. Not only that, it had could record all your shows even if 10 of them were playing at once, and it had unlimited storage space so you could wait a whole season so you could watch them all at once. And,… the kicker is that it was free?

If you hadn’t already heard of it, or seen it, you’d probably say bull. But it’s absolutely true. Now, let’s just say it doesn’t have quite enough for you. Which is reasonable, Hulu, doesn’t have quite as much as full cable TV package (I’ll explain why I’m comparing it to cable in a moment). There is another service out there that is even more well-known with a small cost.

For $8.99 you can get unlimited DVD rentals. But what some people don’t know, is that the $8.99 also includes access to instant movies and tv shows to stream to your computer just like Hulu. While Hulu only has 1/5th of the commercials on cable, Netflix has none.

Now let’s say your favorite show isn’t available on DVD, you want to watch it now, but Hulu doesn’t carry it. Don’t forget that most major networks already stream full episodes online! Pushing Daisies isn’t available on Hulu, but the entire season is readily available on ABC.com.

Long story short, if you add the television content of Hulu, to the vast library of Netflix and the networks who provide shows online, you have access to way more entertainment than a Cable package could possibly provide, at a fraction of the cost. So, unless cable companies are going to change their structure anytime soon, I don’t see myself paying them hundreds of dollars a year to watch commercials.

I’ve discovered that with a little research, you can take a portion of your money and earn about 100% or 200% returns over a year simply by evaluating banks you don’t already have an account at. This has been done for some time now, but if you work at it, you can make some serious returns. I recently put $100 into one national bank and got $100 bonus after 3 months. Some regional banks will match your money instantly, and at one regional bank, I opened a free checking account with no deposit, and got $50 no strings attached!

I do not condone purely entering into these promotions for personal gain, you should at least evaluate the bank for its products and services during this trial period.

Here are some notes I’ve compiled about this method:

1. Read the fine print.
It is very easy to disqualify yourself for a promotion. Read the details, when will they give you the bonus cash, how long until you are vested (keep the account open long enough to take out your money without a penalty), and other requirements such as a minimum balance.

2. Educate yourself about regional banks.
Regional banks are the backbone of our financial system. They may not hold the tens of billions that our national banks do, but there are probably 10 x’s more regional banks than national banks giving you more opportunities for these promotions. They also tend to have better rates and better promotions.

3. Free Checking only.
Do not open an account that has minimum balance requirements and inactivity fees. This will eat up your bonus cash and give it right back to the bank.

4. Make a spreadsheet.
I like to track where all my money, especially when I can no longer count the promotions I’m involved in on my fingers. Place a password on the spreadsheet in case it gets into the wrong hands. I use the following columns: bank, account number, amounted deposited, bonus amount, date bonus available, online banking username, online banking password.

5. Keep proof.
Sometimes the banks do forget to provide the bonus or you were not correctly entered into the promotion when you opened your account. Keeping copies of the promotional offers will generally be sufficient in getting your money should you run into problems getting your bonuses.

You could do anything you want to really, as long as it isn’t offensive. Music is an obvious choice, but that would require having some skills as well as a significant catalog of music to play. You’d also have to be wary of the type of instrument as moving a keyboard is a lot more hassle than an acoustic guitar. Singing while playing earns twice as much.

But you don’t have to sing, you could also dance. One grad student was able to finance his education in by disco dancing on the sidewalk. Others make their money while standing completely still, or painting themselves as robots while moving “robotically.” The sky’s the limit here, use your imagination and just have fun. People might think, man that guy is crazy, but you’ll be the one making cash for doing something you’d probably do for free.

You need something you can do that’s portable, and an area where there’s a lot of street traffic but not a lot of open stores. For example, in downtown Orlando, there is a street called Wall Street that has a lot of clubs nearby. You could park yourself next to one of the stores that are closed at night nearby, so the store manager’s won’t be there to make you go away, and you’ll be free to perform.
