Today is the LAST DAY to vote for Partners in Preservation New York, and you can STILL make a difference in helping one of 40 historic New York places win a much-needed preservation grant. 

Three weeks ago, we introduced you to Partners in Preservation's program to award $3 million to four historic sites and help restore them to their former glory. For the last day, we're profiling a new landmark that made an immediate connection with visitors since its renovation and opening to the public- The High Line.

Originally built in the early 1930s to replace dangerous street-level rail lines that carried goods, the High Line was once a busy freight railway. All services stopped in 1980, and through years of neglect, self-seeded plants emerged, inspiring the current use of the High Line as an urban walkway and oasis. The High Line is seeking funds from Partners in Preservation for stairway repair and to restore the Tenth Avenue Square sunken overlook deck.

Vote for the High Line, or for any of the 40 institutions on the Partners in Preservation website. The four winners will be announced tomorrow!

PARTNERS IN PRESERVATION: HENRY STREET SETTLEMENT

The Lower East Side's Henry Street Settlement provides a wide range of social services, arts, and health care programs to more than 50,000 New Yorkers a year. Founded in 1893 by social work and health pioneer Lillian Wald, Henry Street placed the first nurse in a public school, opened the first playground, and is a founding site of the NAACP.

Today, the settlement continues the legacy of its founder by providing services to all ages through its Abrons Arts Center/Visual and Performing Arts, Youth Services, Transitional & Supportive Housing, Job Training & Placement, Primary & Behavioral Health, Senior Services and Home Care/Housekeeping divisions.

Working with Partners in Preservation, Henry Street Settlement is looking to retrofit the headquarters (built in 1827) to make it more energy-efficient while maintaining the building's historic architectural integrity. From installing solar panels and upgrading plumbing to replacing windows and installing motion-sensitive lighting sensors, the money saved on energy costs would be used towards the programs it provides for the community.

PARTNERS IN PRESERVATION: SECOND STAGE AT THE HELEN HAYES THEATRE

In this big city, there’s nothing quite as comforting as a little intimacy. And that’s exactly what the smallest Broadway theatre has offered audiences since 1912. Originally named The Little Theatre, The Helen Hayes Theatre seats just 590 audience members and has a history of being home to numerous Tony and Pulitzer-Prize winners including Torch Song Trilogy and Prelude To A Kiss, as well as The Dick Clark Show, The Merv Griffin Show, Johnny Carson’s Who Do You Trust? and more.

Renamed in 1983 to honor the First Lady of the American Theater after her original namesake theatre was demolished to make space for the New York Marriott Marquis, the Helen Hayes Theatre continues to be a limelight for the performing arts. While its name has changed a number of times, the Helen Hayes Theatre is a cultural institution and will remain one for years to come. But while its legacy remains intact, its façade, entranceway, columns, and cornice need some work. To help restore this little landmark theatre to its former statuesque glory, Partners in Preservation is offering to foot the bill. But to fund the restoration, you need to participate, too. It won’t cost you, though! Just vote for the Helen Hayes Theatre, or for any of the 40 institutions on the Partners in Preservation website. You can cast a ballot once everyday from now through May 21. Bravo!

PARTNERS IN PRESERVATION: CONEY ISLAND’S B&B CAROUSELL

Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs. The Freak Bar. The New York Aquarium. These are the Coney Island attractions that bring notoriety to Surf Avenue all year long. But Coney Island is home to more than just the beach, arcades, and the Mermaid Parade. With the closing of Astroland (and its replacement by the more modern Luna Park), the Coney Island boardwalk continues to evolve. Yet what better way to preserve its history than by reinstalling a newly refurbished, and still legendary, Coney Island B&B Carousell?

Built in 1919, the B&B Carousell is the sole surviving carousel (of 25 hand-carved rides) from the boardwalk’s Golden Age in the early 1900s. The ride, which features 50 hand-carved horses and two chariots, operated until 2005. The continued development of Surf Avenue is set to transform the neighborhood as new attractions are being developed alongside many memorable landmarks.

The B&B Carousell’s return to Coney Island (from its restoration site in Ohio) will help preserve Coney Island's historic core. Partners in Preservation is offering to cover the cost of the carousel’s safe transport back to Brooklyn, provided this historic amusement ride receives your support. All you need to do is vote for the Coney Island B&B Carousell and help it to be one of four landmarks to receive $3 million in grants.

RESTORING NYC LANDMARKS WITH PARTNERS IN PRESERVATION: THE DUO MULTICULTURAL ARTS CENTER

Have you considered what NYC would be like without its art? From museums and galleries to Broadway and buskers, art thrives in this city. Originally built as a social hall in 1889, the Duo Multicultural Arts Center (DMAC) in the East Village has a history of being vital to social movements and the arts. John Philip Sousa started the first musicians union here, and early ILGWU meetings were held following the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. In the 1930's, the ballroom was converted into a theater which continues to be in operation today. And in the ‘60s it hosted Andy Warhol's "Boys To Adore Galore" porn films and productions featuring three Warhol Superstars, Jackie Curtis, Holly Woodlawn and Candy Darling. Filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola shot the famous operetta scene from The Godfather: Part II here as well.

To help maintain its presence as a well-established arts center the building needs some revamping, namely restoration of its six murals and classic tin ceiling and fixtures. Watch artistic director Michelangelo Alasa speak about the DMAC and restoration efforts here.

This is where Partners in Preservation and you come in. Four NYC landmarks will be awarded $3 million to help restore their facades and structures to their former glory. All you have to do to support the DMAC and any of the other historic sites is vote on the Partners in Preservation website. You can vote once per day, every day, for any landmark, from now until May 21.

Experience modern art in new and exciting ways this month at MoMA’s P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center! Queens may seem far away, but it’s just a short subway ride from midtown Manhattan to this former NYC public school in Long Island City. Since becoming affiliated with MoMA in 2000, P.S. 1 has been at the forefront of the city’s efforts to bring contemporary art to international audiences, and boasts innovative and diverse activities that attract visitors from beyond the boroughs. To celebrate P.S. 1’s widespread creative achievements, NYC & Company has designated the institution as its Culture Spot for May and visitors will receive 2-for-1 admission all month long.

This month, Afrika Bambaataa hits the dj decks (May 13) for the legendary Sunday Sessions in celebration of Kraftwerk — Retrospective 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8, which honors Kraftwerk’s extensive influence on electronic music. Also this month MoMA PS1 debuts Lara Favaretto’s Just Knocked Out, a major survey of the Italian artist’s sculptures, images and installations. Comprised of such items as compressed air cylinders, confetti and car wash brushes, Favaretto explores the theme of loss and resignation with humor and imagination.
