So what do you really do with an old Shure SM58? Put it on the shelf as a trophy, use it as a hammer on the soldering bench or perhaps integrate into the rental package of the Punk Rock band that rents a system twice a month. Hmm what to do?

Reconditioning SM58
How about a minor recondition that costs less than $75.00 bucks and will extend the life of the SM58 another fifteen years? Shure Microphones Inc sells replacement capsules and windscreens. Replacing these two parts, aside from cosmetic damage on the body of the microphone will transform your old beat up (and most likely stinky) microphone in to a brand new one.

The R59 Replacement Cartridge is the replacement for a damaged or worn-out SM58 that you have noticed is no longer delivering that classic Shure SM58 sound we all love.

The R143G is the Factory Original SM58 replacement Grille. Lets face it folks if a microphone gives you 15 to 30 years of service it deserves factory replacement parts.

The last thing you should know is that Shure will recondition any old SM58 or SM57 you may have. Just send them back to the service department and if I remember it correctly they will call you with a price to fix them up.

Shure Microphones
Old Shure microphones never die. They get reconditioned or put into the rental inventory. If you have any questions about recondition your microphones please leave a comment and I will get back to you, or give my friends at J Sound Services a call (615 534 1190) and they will be happy to help you out.

Shure Microphones VS FCC

Shure 700 MHzWireless VS The FCC
I received an email from my friend Casey Johnson last week letting all affected parties know that the FCC has decided to not license churches regarding wireless microphone transmission. The problem with not licensing churches for wireless transmission is they are now more than ever susceptible to interference

Shure states in a press release posted on their website " The FCC has ordered that wireless microphones, in-ear monitors, and related equipment must cease operations in the 700 MHz band (698–806 MHz) after June 12, 2010, or earlier under certain conditions. This rule change does not apply to wireless systems that operate in other frequency ranges—only systems that operate on frequencies between 698 and 806 MHz are affected."
How rugged is a Shure SM58? During my 20 plus years of touring I have seen many things that would make your head spin. I have also seen a lot of gear not able to withstand the riggers of touring. But there is one trusted piece of gear the every sound engineer can count on, no matter what happens during a performance, it's the Shure SM58 (product link)

Microphone Tecnique and Microphone Abuse
I have seen the SM58 drenched in spit and sweat. Dropped and kicked, thrown into a crowd and then hurled back at the singer. I have seen the microphone rained on and dropped in puddles put back on the microphone stand and make it through the performance. All in all The Shure SM58 can handle any live situation it may encounter.
Now understand I am not a technical kind of guy in any way.

SM58 the only choice
With all the microphone choices out there my first choice is always the Shure SM58. Please feel free to contact me (email) with any questions about how I use the SM58. The latest offering from Shure is a USB Signal Adaptor that looks like a wireless handle with microphone gain control, volume and a monitoring control wheel. The handle also features built in phantom power. Dynamic or condenser microphones simply plug into the USB handle and you are ready to record

The spec sheet notes the USB devise has zero latency and the Monitor Mix Control can be used for blending microphone and playback audio. So now the go to vocal microphone can now be your go to digital on the go recording microphone. Sure says the X2u is plug and play and is compatible with Windows Vista, XP, 2000 (the jury is out on this), and Mac OS X 10.1 or later. So weather you are in your home studio, recording pod-casts on location or in the back of a tour bus recording the bands next big demo you can now grab the Shure SM58 and the X2u USB Signal Adaptor with your computer and know that you will get the legendary sound the SM58 is famous for.

For additional information on the X2u or any Shure product please contact my friends at JSS.net.

Microphone placement for sound reinforcement

Below is a link to a wiki that has some great information on microphone placement. The comparison was done in a complete anechoic chamber test and the results were amazing. We all know how rugged and durable a SM58 is. That's not part of this discussion. When the two microphones were compared, there was less than 2db difference across the entire frequency band from the old microphone to the new one more than 25 years later. This is one of the primary reasons that the Shure SM58 microphone has become the cornerstone of sound reinforcement throughout the years. Show after show, night after night, the artist and the engineer know exactly how this microphone will perform.

Welcome to the Shure SM 58 Blogs First Posting

Welcome to the first posting of the Shure SM 58 Blog. It is important to note that this blog is not sponsored, endorsed or published by Shure Incorporated. I am just a fan of the microphone and got to thinking that most sound engineers have a story about the famed microphone. My goal is to make this blog a reflection of the folks who read it. I'm looking for stories, pictures and video or any type of information historical or otherwise regarding the SM 58.

So stay tuned, please RSS this blog or become a member. Also please let me know what you think and if you have any ideas send-em over.
