Yes, that’s right, I said YOUR Freemasonry. I don’t know about what your experience has been, but as for myself the achievements of Brothers past have always been trotted out and displayed in a way that is almost reminiscent of a scene in a post-apocalyptic movie.

Begin scene:
A group of grizzled survivors are huddled around a fire, and the elder brings out the remnants of a society that has been lost to the past and is long gone.  He might bring out a long dead iPhone and explain to the young ones how at one time, before the Fall, you could actually talk to people around the world with it, it would help you if you ever got lost and you could even play a game called Angry Birds on it.
Dirty faces gaze on in the fire light, eyes filled with wonder as they listen to the fantastic tales of flying machines, electric lights, movies, men walking on the moon and Totino’s Pizza Rolls.
The fire dies down, embers glimmer. It is time for bed. They all lay close to the dying embers of the fire. Some dreams are full of visions of all the wonderful things that were. Others, more practically minded, think the old man a crazy, liar. All, however, are in agreement, that they will never see days, like that, in their life time.
Unseen in the dark lurks a giant squirrel. A monster brought to life by the radioactive fallout. Squirrel-a-saurous pounces on them and eats them all.
End scene.

A bit melodramatic I admit, but I think the analogy is accurate. I see things that Brothers have done in the past and I marvel at the ingenuity, industriousness, collaboration and commitment that they displayed. It is awesome and awe inspiring. I can’t help but to think, however, “what did they have, that we don’t?”

Hmmmmm….

Well, money, time, higher membership levels, money, the use of electricity in the Shrine ritual, and, did I mention, higher membership levels.

Ok, I guess we do face different challenges today than they did then. Duh. Its a no-brainer that things are different now than they were in the 1940’s, hell the 1990’s.

So, we don’t have the money or the man power that we had 60-70 years ago. Good. Yes, that’s right, I said good. Now I will be the first to admit that I could be talking completely out of my ass. (Anyone have an Altiod?) Let’s look at this as an opportunity, not a disadvantage. With large groups comes much bureaucracy, and if there is one thing Masons are good at its bureaucracy, and if there is anything that will stifle ingenuity, for one example, its bureaucracy.

Another benefit of this, is it will, for larger endeavors, be necessary to reach out to our communities. Wow, imagine that, working with the community at large. People having contact with Freemasonry other than the show they saw on TV last week. The one that told them we are running the Federal Reserve.

Bob, you might say, give me one good example of what the hell it is you are talking about.

Ok, I says.

Let us say, there is a need in your community. Graffiti clean-up, help at an animal shelter.  Whatever, just think big, bigger at least than these meager examples. Get a couple of guys together, go to the local Boys and Girls club and set up a date to go DO SOMETHING. Here you are, out in the community, doing good, and in the process you are introducing young people to Freemasonry. Hell, who knows you might even change a life. I know, I know maybe I’m exaggerating, but then again maybe I’m not.

What’s that? You don’t think you can get the Lodge on board with something like that? No problem. Who said that you need to make it an official Lodge function? Get yourself and one or two other guys and go do it anyhow. Hell, do it yourself, call your brother-in-law, the one that owes you money, and ask him to come and help, and have him bring a couple of friends.

Ok, we have it covered, now what?

We are supposed to be the Golden Builders, right? Go build something. At least try. We all have a responsibility to be productive. One of the reasons that Freemasonry attracts the men that it does is that we are all compelled to create. Do so. I know I make it sound simple, well that is because it is. Honestly. Now after you create it might take some hard work to see things to fruition, but the initial act of creation itself is easy, that is the most amazing thing about it. It’s like having kids, making them is easy, raising them… I guess thats a sloppy…er… bad analogy, you get my point.

Within the teachings of the Craft are lessons on how to do this. The most important thing to do is to take action. Think about what we, what you could do.

Think about it. What an impact we could make if just one man from each lodge in America would go out and create something. A community event, a charity, a business. You name it, where would you go? We are taught to subdue our passions not to extinguish them. Let us not become dry bones! To be apathetic is no better than to let your passions lead you around by the nose, it might even be a little worse. Use THEM, your passions, as a vehicle, just like someone might ride a wild horse that has been broken. I hope that comes across in the intent I mean it.

Before I get to long winded with this, I’ll bring it to a close, I know too late.

My challenge to you is simply this: Do Something.

Make it an official Lodge function, or don’t. Do it by yourself, or bring other Brothers in on it. Go out create, be productive. Let us now make our forbearers proud, and avoid getting eaten by the giant radioactive squirrel.

Well to be quite honest, for myself, the podcast was, in the beginning, born out of a desire to vent about the politics that I was seeing take place in my Mother Lodge. It was born out of something that was, in and of itself, not the most noble of aspirations. But after the first two or three shows, it quickly became something entirely different. The first shows had a soothing and cathartic effect on me. I soon was able to release the vitriol I had stored up and with the company of the GOOD Brothers, I found something quite different than that which I expected. I found, or rediscovered perhaps, fellowship, friends and Brotherly love. I found a way to continue to explore this wondrous thing called Freemasonry. My work schedule does not allow me to make meetings nearly as often as I would like. I’m lucky if I get to make it to the business meeting, let alone a degree meeting, as they tend to start earlier. The podcast is a way for me to remain an active Mason, though I might not get to an actual meeting, or be performing ritual work, I am doing something of a Masonic nature and doing it with my Brothers. It is a good excuse to get together with the boys and hang out. Break bread, enjoy an adult beverage, talk Masonry and laugh. By my Brothers I don’t just mean Mitch, Jason and Steve. I have come into contact with some damn fine men and Masons. Without the podcast I may have never had the pleasure of knowing these guys. Men like W.B. Jeff Dyer, Bro. Chris Chrizanowski, not to mention all the guys out to Walled Lake Lodge over in MI. (Hi Alan!) None of these men have I met in person, I might not even know them if they walked up to me on the street, they’re my Brothers none the less, and damn fine men, to boot. None of them would I have come into contact with, without the podcast. It also is a very gratifying feeling when we get messages from Brothers that are inspired to go back to Lodge after listening to the show. The running theme in these messages is that they had forgotten how fun it was, and what a good feeling it was to hang with Brothers, smoke, and tell jokes. In short The Setting Maul has gone from something for me, to something for you guys. Well, no that isn’t exactly true either. It is for all of us. (I know, I know, gag.) Ok, enough mushy stuff.

I am very excited for the changes that may be happening in the near future. I think it will be good for the show, if we go forward with these things, I believe it will force us to raise the bar and give you boys something more, a bonus shall we say. Moreover I think it will open opportunities for us, all of us, to do MORE GOOD with the podcast. I know, not everyone will be onboard for the (possibly) coming changes, but I hope the majority of you guys stick around. I think you will be pleased, and that it will be worth it.

In closing, I just want to express my gratitude for the support that we have received from Brothers not just here in Utah, but from those all around the globe. It is truly humbling. Thank you, thank you, a million times thank you. You guys have done so very much for me, and have taught me a true Masonic lesson, that of Brotherly love. I also would like to address something real quick, if you don’t mind… good I’m going to anyway. You may have noticed that throughout this missive, I have capitalized the word Brother throughout. The reason for this is not bad grammar, necessarily, but rather I make it a point to emphasize the word. If you go and look at my older posts and writings I have done it there too. This is because you guys are my family. I really mean that.

I love you Brothers, Remember to love one another, laugh more, and avoid the Salmon at the banquet.

We at the Setting Maul believe wholeheartedly in the long standing Masonic tradition of shameless self promotion, but on occasion we will find something of worth amongst the flotsam of the internet that is worth mentioning. My grandfather was a Freemason and in my home country Freemasons were always upheld to a high character. Am surprised that such affiliation with freemasonry and the type of conduct would be acceptable from Masons in United States and Utah.

There constitutes a disclosure on the site of not an official Masonic Body but still links it as being ran by Masons. Which from my grandfathers standards and my own does not seem of in light of what a mason should act accordingly, nor be proper conduct of any man.

I find it questionable that Masonic Leadership or any Mason for that matter would be connected with such demeanor.

I find for the sake of Freemasonry being held to higher standard I express my opinions. Thank you.”

Emeril’s Ruby Red Rocket Cocktail

Ingredients

1 1/2 ounces citrus flavored vodka, or vodka
1/2 ounce triple sec
3 ounces red grapefruit juice blend
2 teaspoons creme de cassis or raspberry liqueur
Coarse brown sugar crystals, optional garnish to coat rims of the glasses
Candied orange slices, optional garnish

Directions

If desired, wet the rim of a tall martini glass, then dip in the coarse brown sugar crystals. In a cocktail shaker, combine the vodka, triple sec, and juice with crushed ice. Shake well for 30 seconds, then strain into the prepared martini glass. Gently add the creme de cassis, allowing to fall to the bottom of the glass. Garnish with a candied orange slice, if desired, and serve.

Had an awesome 4th! Attended my lodges annual picnic and outdoor communication. Our lodge has a nice private picnic ground high in the Sangre De Christo mountain range of Colo (8?500 ft). We had lodge set up in a large canvas tent and all of the lodge furniture was made from the pine forest around us! It was the first time we had open lodge outdoors with 3 other lodges in attendance. We have been meeting there since the 1950’s when a brother Graham left us the property in his will. We even had some Grand lodge officers in attendance. All had a great time and the Brethren and Raimbow Girls helped us serve our extended Masonic family. But I digress…..

I was invited to a brother Elks house (BPOE) for a party later that day and decided to take the bratwurst casserole. My wife and daughter actualy prepared it however I did transcribe it from the podcast. It was a huge hit and went very quickly! We left the dish in the oven to keep warm while we were in the mountains that day. My daughter forgot to shut the oven off. Disaster I thought! I was wrong. It was a little overdone. However every thing carmelized and the barley was dark and looked the color of roasted coffee beans. My Brother Elks asked me what kind of beef was in the casserole? When I told them it was bratwurst they couldn’t belive it.

We spent the rest of the evening sampling fine single malt scotch and two very good beers “Samichlaus” and “Thomas Hardy”. As we celebrated our countries independance “by blowing up a small portion of it” I could not help but think. “This is Brotherly Love”!

You and the J’s keep up the great work, I really enjoy the podcast. Does Kodoshko need a retailer in Southern Colorado?

What are the differences?  Where did the ‘Ancient/Antient’ come from?  Which is truly more Ancient/Antient if one actually is and if it really matters?  If what I’ve read and been told in other discussions as I’ve had are correct, there’s a bit of an oxymoron in the ‘Ancient/Antient’ though I cannot be sure my information is correct.

Now, before ANYONE gets upset, NO I did not just insult our Ancient/Antient Free & Accepted Brothers by using the word oxy’moron’…

Yesterday afternoon, I had the privilege of taking part in a celebration of 150 years of Freemasonry in Utah at Camp Floyd, located approximately 35 miles southwest of Salt Lake City.  Camp Floyd has a rich and interesting history, being the home to some 3,500 troops sent to the Utah Territory in 1858 to quell a perceived “Mormon Rebellion.”  Being that many of the troops were Freemasons, they successfully obtained a charter from the Grand Lodge of Missouri and Rocky Mountain Lodge #205 was born.

Sadly, the Lodge disbanded just a few years later in 1861 when troops were called away from Utah at the onset of the Civil War.  Nevertheless, Freemasonry persisted after a brief interruption and has been here ever since.

Each year, Wasatch Lodge #1 in Salt Lake City commemorates this august occasion by donning 19th Century apparel and conferring the Sublime Degree to a candidate at Camp Floyd.  Being the sesquicentennial anniversary of Freemasonry in Utah, we were honored to host the Most Worshipful Grand Master of Missouri and a host of other Masonic dignitaries.

Good times were had by all.  What I appreciated most about the event is that it gave me a chance to experience the depth of our Fraternity and catch a glimpse at it’s immense history.  One could spend a lifetime researching Masonic history…what a wonderful way to pass the time.

Rumor had it that there was some scrumpy on hand at the event, but I can neither confirm nor deny it’s presence.

I don’t believe it is news to any one that there is an interesting dynamic between the Church of Rome and Freemasonry.  Since the infamous Papal Bull of 1738, the relationship between the two organizations has been shaky at best.

I recently read an article about author John Salza, a Catholic and former “32nd Degree Freemason.”  I always laugh when the media has to accentuate the “Degree” of a Freemason.  Mr. Salza purports that he was aggresively recruited into the Craft in the 1980s by some fellow students in law school.  His initial intentions were to use the Fraternity as a social networking opportunity with his colleagues.

Mr. Salza then reveals that as he learned more about Freemasonry, he found “theological” reasoning to the objections of the Catholic Church.  He became proficient with Our ritual, which led him to question it’s compatability of his Faith.  Rather than drone on about the entire article, I found the following paragraph most interesting:

“Some men do know what the Church teaches, but rationalize it,” said Mr. Salza. “I haven’t tried to beat them up with theological arguments, but to appeal to their intellects. Freemasonry places all religions on the same level. If I can get him to admit that that’s an erroneous teaching, I can get somewhere with him…. Christianity says that Jesus was divine, and Islam says that He was not. Masonry holds both those positions. Anybody with some modicum of intelligence will recognize that that’s a contradiction.”

At the risk of revealing my own private beliefs regarding religion, I must interject.  My biggest gripe with most organized religions is this intolerance that if you don’t follow one exact path, you are condemned in  the afterlife.  Mr. Salza fails to explain that Freemasonry is not a religion, but for most a supplicant to their personal belief system.  Why must Freemasonry proclaim the divinity of Jesus or affirm the beliefs of Islam?  Why can’t it merely provide a basic system of morals that are Universal to us all?  The intent of Freemasonry was never to replace religion, yet we see arguments to the contrary all too often.

I realize I’m stating the obvious to you, the faithful Setting Maulers.  I just thought it was interesting to see the same old arguments and gripes being recycled once again.  Sheesh.

It’s been an ass-kicker of a week, but I wanted to thank the Brothers J for putting out a quality product in my absence.  I had a tooth pulled on Tuesday morning and the pain was somewhat unbearable for me on the night of the podcast.  However, a full bottle of Percocet and some time off work has left me in good spirits.  There is nothing quite like an opium derivative to put the Love back in Brotherly Love!

It’s not uncommon for a couple of the nephews and nieces to prefer (more lately than ever) to stay around the dinner table after the meal and talk with or just listen in on the conversation with the ‘adults’ as opposed to running to the basement to play with toys or watch whatever video is currently all the rage.

A couple days ago this occurred again.  As these two children join in conversations with the ‘grown ups’ more frequently the topic of their schooling or neighborhood friends comes up.  I believe since the ‘children’ are showing more interest in being part of this social group during family events it’s only fair to ask them questions so they can share what they find interesting or important. (and incidentally, it’s usually more interesting to hear their stories than what we adults discuss).

I marveled the other night as one child had the attention of everyone in the room while regaling us with a tale of a recent vacation the family had taken.  Also of interest to me was how perturbed he became when his cousin wasn’t paying attention to his story, in fact he seemed to think (and I rather agree) that this cousin, sitting by at the opposite end of the table was being quite rude.  Distracting others who were trying to listen, playing with the latest hand-held video game device, or perhaps he was texting a friend on his mobile telephone, I don’t know for certain.

During the course of the first child’s story he made several passive attempts to allude to his displeasure at the second child’s rude and distracting behavior.  He even became more emphatic as the second child began to distract the others around him with sideline comments, giggling and laughter.  He paused at several points during his story, turning his gaze directly at the second child who seemed not to notice the first child’s disdain.

The reason I share this story is because I thought it supremely ironic that this ‘first’ child became so unnerved and annoyed at the ’second’ child’s rude and distracting (one might even say disrespectful behavior) while he was telling his story of the recent family vacation.

I found it ironic because the ‘first’ child had behaved in exactly the same way as the ’second’ child only minutes before when the ’second’ child was telling the group of a paper he had recently written and received a good grade for at school.  The ‘first’ child didn’t seem to see the irony.  Nor, do I believe, did he realize that the ’second’ child was seemingly only behaving in this ‘distracting and rude’ manner during the ‘first’ child’s story as a sort of way of trying to teach the ‘first’ child a lesson about how rudely he was treated during his own story.

The moral, if you’ve been able to follow this allegory is we all need to learn that what we have to say or share is very rarely (if ever) going to mean as much to others as it does to us but if we want someone to show interest in our life, stories or what we may have to teach others, a goodly amount of respect shown in advance goes a long way to receiving the same in return.

This is something I observe and [hopefully] learn from each time I’m in Lodge and don’t have much interest in what others are sharing.  Sometimes the meetings wear on.  Sometimes Brothers don’t know when to stop talking.  Most often it’s because they are passionate about the subject they’re sharing.  Sometimes it’s because as officers of the Lodge they’re charged with addressing the more tedious aspects of what it takes to operate a Lodge properly.  The least I can do is listening respectfully and not engage in sideline conversation.  Every Brother and Friend I have in Lodge deserves that much.

And if they talk too much, too often, perhaps I should make a larger contribution toward the purchase of a Lodge Monkey to speed things along.

Brothers J2, J3 and I had the opportunity to spend a fantastic evening raising two Brothers to the Sublime Degree last night.  Evenings like this always remind me that it is the work in Freemasonry that really matters.  Take out the politics, take out the pomp and circumstance and we dwell together in unity.  The interesting part of it is that Degree meetings tend to have the smallest turnout.  While I can’t speak for others, I can only imagine that my experience must be vastly different than one that only attends Stated Meetings.  Not a bad experience…just different.

Of course, my experience must pale to those that are even more involved than I.  I envy the Brother that can make the type of commitment that I hope to one day attain.

Oh yeah.  Refreshments were de-lish…if I do say so myself.

On the drive home in the rain I found myself pondering “how good and how pleasant it is for Brethren to dwell together in unity” when another thought arrived directly on the heels of that concept: sometimes it seems as though the “Work” we do is simply an excuse for Brethren and good friends to spend some time together, re-solidifying friendships that might otherwise fall victim to the nature of how busy everyone is, and thereby suffer for want of a reason to meet with one another every now and then.  I seem to recall learning this lesson some years ago – it was a welcome re-education.

Thanks to the Brothers who let me join in last night – it was a perfect excuse to enjoy what really matters to me in Masonry. “Oh ye millions” and you know who YOU are…”This ‘Oatmeal’ is for you.

Forgive my poor graphics skills, for this is as close as I could get it.  My question to you is this is an actual Masonic symbol?  We all know the pentagram has connotations ranging from the positive to the negative, so it doesn’t concern me.  Just curious….

There I was, sitting in front of my computer being a lump. A couple of hours ago I got the bad news that I was indeed slated to run to Wamsutter tonight and tomorrow night. You see, when I am not recording our great podcast with my Brothers J&P I am a truck driver. Normally locally, but as luck would have it with less than a days notice I was informed that yes, I would get to brave the icy (unplowed) roads to the middle of Wyoming. (Read middle of nowhere – coming from a Utah boy, that says allot.) I’m pissed off at my dispatcher for not having the brains enough to properly plan ahead, we are after all in the logistics industry, or for at least giving me more notice. The worst part of this is that I will not be able to record the next episode of the podcast with my dear friends and Brothers. Pissed is a bit of an understatement. I digress.
Like I said, I’m sitting here in front of the computer, and I remembered what I had planned on talking about in the next podcast. No matter what gets thrown at you in life, remember, ENJOY IT. (Life that is)
“Oh Hell”, I say to myself.
I guess I had better take my own advice. Granted, its free advice, and normally free advice is worth about that much. I however think that this might be worth a little something. I have a couple of choices.
I can either:

A. Stay pissed off at the ineptitude of those that are paid to make better decisions than they tend to do. Get angry that every time I make plans, work has a way of fouling them. Worry about the snow & ice. Worry about, not if but when they are going to shut I-80 down tonight, and if I’m going to be stuck on the interstate.

or

B.  Be grateful I’m working, and for a good company. Understand that dispatch does their best, and remember that I screw up to every now and then too. Stop worrying about the snow because I can’t control the weather but I can do my best to stay on the road. Not worry about the four wheelers (that is a little trucker lingo for those not driving trucks) and do my best to not let them [four wheelers] commit suicide by truck. Most of all, I can remember that the Grand Architect of the Universe is in control, not me. To trust in Him and to enjoy life.

A or B, Be grateful for the gifts that are given to us by the Grand Architect, or focus on the niggling annoying things that tend to bog a body down.

I know it sounds trite and it certainly can be difficult, but I am choosing to be grateful for my dash on the ice tonight. I say this for myself, but I hope that a Brother out there in the interweb might get something out of this too.

p.s. by the by, The recording will take place Monday night but as the editing staff will be out of town from Tuesday through Friday next week the podcast (& members only content) will not likely be available until the week-end sometime.  Sorry, in advance for the delay.

I can only describe this as a rather empty and lonely feeling.  It is at that point that I know we are the furthest away from our next show and from the opportunity to spend those hours with such good Brothers and Friends.  Though I understand that in all likelihood we will record again next month I can’t help but appreciate what it means that these Good Men sacrifice and choose to band together with me in this endeavor a minimum of twelve times each year; though it hasn’t been an entire year yet.  Anyway, the point is, I don’t take for granted that this magic isn’t guaranteed to happen again – we must want it to happen, make it happen, every 30 days or so.

The basic point is this, I greatly enjoy it though it passes quickly and seems filled with saying a few things that make sense myself and trying my hardest to sound funny or somewhat educated and intelligible (as the case may be) all while checking recording levels, manning the recording equipment, editing ‘on-the-go’, scripting material [together] (and believe me they do much more during our sessions than I could attempt with any success) while also trying (all through each session) to also truly ingest the morsels Jubela, Jubelum and Peba are sharing with me (and you) that I may never get to hear in quite the same way [ever] again, I cannot manage to enjoy the sincere joy, the tacit understanding that we CHOOSE to be there in those moments in quite the way I wish were possible.  Hey, I’m just not that strong a multi-tasker.

With that long-winded sentiment out of the way I must tell you I jealously and eagerly horde such opportunities such as I had last night when (Peba being unable to join us notwithstanding – and I missed you being there) Jubela, Jubelo and Jubelum got together at a distant oubliette to brainstorm ideas for the upcoming recording next Monday – we actually got little accomplished – but then that isn’t at all truthful – we actually got to enjoy time together.  Time not spent multi-tasking our way through a show but instead sharing part of our day, part of our lives focused on nothing but each other (and our Worshipful Brother Jubela’s lovely & intelligent Lady his amazing son) – where else but in Freemasonry would I have made these life-altering connections?  Where else but in the tireless work of those who originally founded what I think was and remains a great idea such as The Setting Maul Podcast.

I do NOT take it for granted!

I always hope for Love and Luck to all Brethren everywhere – but today I’m being selfish and offering my deepest admiration, appreciation for and undying devotion to our crew, Jubela, Jubelum and Peba – YOUR Setting Maul Creators!

I must apologize for my laziness on the setting maul as of late. I guess this has been due in part to the hours I have been putting in as of late.

I tried to explain the idea of the twenty four inch gauge to my boss, that to be a balanced individual we should divide the twenty four hours of the day into three parts, 8 hours for rest and relaxation, 8 four our given vocation and 8 for service to God or the relief of a worthy Brother. I also said that because of this these twelve to fourteen hour days are just not cutting it.

He laughed and said get back to work.

Today I will see if the twenty four inch gauge can be used as a weapon.

VIW – How did you find us here in Utah from way back there?  Nice to have visitors from other jurisdictions – share some of your words when you have a chance.

Brethren – help me welcome these readers to our “Hallowed” (or should I say hollowed) halls.  We welcome you among us.  To this irreverent retreat of satire.  To this place of respectful irreverence in Freemasonry.  Watch out for that short guy with long arms at the door – he’s not a Master Mason.  (Why do ya think we hired him)?

I am happy to inform you that since our latest Podcast “11/10/2008″ was released we’ve exceeded 500 downloads of the show.  We canna do it without ya!  This is an amazing milestone for us when we really never expected this thing to go anywhere but to the goal of keeping us young Masons off the streets and away from the drugs.  504 downloads – Brothers, readers & listeners WOW!  Thank you.  Tell just one more friend!

We’re gonna try to get a Podcast recorded for December even though it is a busy time for all of us – however, those who’ve already asked the Podcast this month won’t be recorded until later – 22nd to be exact.  Let’s see if we’re all sleeping on the couch after explaining to our good Ladies that we’re recording three days before Christmas.

The winner of this contest will get an as yet undisclosed prize.

If you catch this early enough, it is easily remedied by giving him good coffee (something non-burnt that doesn’t taste like roasted sawdust).  Fresh Cream Puffs will also do the trick.  However, Pate will immediately enrage the Lodge Monkey and cause it to become incontinent.

Coming through this election season (and I’m not referring to our Nation’s Governmental elections but Lodge elections for the Lodge that initiated, passed and raised me) I am struck but the fact that this idea is not always true – Congratulations WB-Elect C. of my Original Lodge – I believe you are indeed fit to lead and I am happy for my Brothers in your Lodge.  They will benefit from your year in the Oriental Chair as they have in the past due to the many, many Brothers who’ve filled that position.

Congratulations to the Officers and Brethren of Wasatch Lodge No. 1 Free & Accepted Mason for a successful 2008 and my deepest wishes for 2009!

I believe that was AIG that was in so much trouble. ING is certainly one of those big names in the finance industry. But I don’t think they’re (directly) asking for any bailout money.

Thank you for the correction. I believe I had the idea that ING had received bailout money, whether they asked for it or not and that perhaps they shouldn’t be using it to sponsor the NYC Marathon.
