Sam and Elena Dementieva were the US Open Series Champions. Six men’s events are counted. They include Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Washington, Montreal, Cincinnati, and New Haven. Sam won with 175 points. Second place was Andy Murray with 145 points and the third place was Juan Martin del Potro with 140 points.

Sam received an extra $40,00 for losing in the round of 32 at the US Open

Along with being a devoted friend to Sam since elementary school, Dan was a member of the Semisonic cover band “Backwards Turnpike”, along with fellow Samurai, Dylan “Pickles” Lacoe and Wesley “Sweeps” Burrows, until failing to find a fan base interested in any Semisonic song other than “Closing Time”. They have since switched gears and become hall of fame Rock Band performers for the Xbox 360.Farrugia’s proudest moment as a Samurai came during the 2008 US Open when the club received National acclaim for bringing life and excitement to the tournament while remaining respectful. After the onslaught of female fans following the exposure became too much, too soon, Dan quietly returned to his studies at Cornell, where he waits, until it is time once more for the Samurai to rise up and fill the void in the soul of the world’s faithful tennis fans.

Sam was seeded sixth and had a bye in the round of 64. In the round of 32 he meet Marc Gicquel of France and won 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-2.

In the round of 16 Sam faced Bjorn Phau of Germany and won 7-5, 6-3.

In the quarterfinals Sam faced Nikolay Davydenko, the number one seed, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. By winning this match, Sam was guaranteed to be the US Open Series Champion.

Due to rain and the fact the the finals had to be played on Saturday due to the US Open starting, the semifinals were played indoors on Saturday during the day. Sam defeated Jose Acasuso of Argentina 6-3, 6-4.

Sam had to go out later that night to play the finals against Fernando Verdasco of Spain. Sam lost 4-6, 6-7(6).

In the first round, Sam won against Yen-Hsun Lu from Taiwan 6-3, 6-4.

Next Sam faced Andy Roddick of the USA and played amazingly. He won in two tiebreakers, 7-6(11), 7-6(3).

In the match I saw him play, he lost to Lleyton Hewitt of Australia 1-6, 6-2, 3-6.

Sam was seeded 16th in Washington and had a bye first round. In the second round he faced Igor Kunitsyn and won 6-3, 6-4. Next he faced the top seed, Andy Roddick and lost 6-7(4), 4-6.

It’s not that I haven’t been following Sam’s progress since LA, I have. I’ve just been really busy. I’m a senior in high school with 4 AP classes. I was playing second singles in the varsity tennis team (with a season record of 13-2!!) and working a part-time job.

I did get a chance to go to the Cincinnati Masters and see Sam play Lleyton Hewitt and also got a picture with Sam after he finished practicing!!!
