Half-demon Hope interrupts werewolf Karl Marsden right in the middle of a robbery and, from there, things get...hairy (sorry, I couldn't help it). Hope's working as a bounty hunter of sorts, still a rookie and eager to please her boss. So when they say to get Karl Marsden, that's what she intends to do.

Except her boss isn't who he claims and Karl, well, he's not quite as bad as he was in BITTEN (notice the *quite* because he's still a bad wolf at heart and he's going to do what he needs to do no matter who's after him). The chemistry between Hope and Karl is off-the-charts and leads to some great dialogue as well as some steamy moments (it's a novella...so not nearly as much steam as in a full-length novel).

Another dip into a very well-known world -- this probably isn't one you'd want to read without having read some of the novels within the series. As for those who've explored the world and want to dip their toes once again, it's a fantastic time to visit.

Good pacing, fun flirtation between Karl and Hope and a dramatic evening to kivk off their romance. Always love Armstrong's writing, she always keeps you on your toes and laughing.
I enjoy her books and this was definitly another winner, just wish she'd continue instead of stopping w/ Thirteen..... I want to see Sean come out and Savannah be in his life more, let's see if his Grandfather really disowns him, or realizes Savannah would be an asset as she has powers from both parents,so very powerful, or so Kelley has written.
I finished reading the regular series before reading the novellas. although not strictly necessary some thing would have made more sense if I had. I miss the longer books but will take what I can get! I love this author's Other work series and only wish there were more!
A novella of the Otherworld Series. The story of half-demon Hope Adams and werewolf Karl Marsden. I have read the Otherworld books and this is a great story that fills in information on Hope and Karl's relationship. Wish I could give it 4 1/2 stars, don't love it as much as some other authors, but better than just like, LOL.
The Otherworld series has never disappointed me yet, this novella is another example of wonderful fun and great characters. Very entertaining.
Another great Kelly Armstrong novel. Good story line with just the right amount of humor. The characters were interesting and fun. Have to see if there is a book 2 on this one. I sure hope so. If you've never read her books, I recommend that you do. Start with the "A Werewolf Named Kitty" series. You'll be waiting with baited breath for her next book. 😊 I know I do.
Great story. I loved the way Hope and Karl met. Though a novella, all the elements were there. Excitement mounting as they work together to get out of the predicament they find themselves in. Oh and how their romance gets started. It won't be a cakewalk for Karl. Hope finds Karl charming but not the way he wants, she finds him attractive but not the way Karl hopes. You all need to read this and all the rest of Kelleys books and meet the rest of the players of this fantastic series.

I grabbed the first book in this series and liked it well enough to buy the second. What really torqued me, though, was that while the author kept the first book fairly clean, he led this one out with a graphic and slimy sex scene. Guys like Wallace don't write because they are artists or have a good story to tell, they write so they can fantasize while they write pornography. Disgusting!

but with more character development than most. It is fast paced without seeming rushed. This author has many good series.
The sequel to the Starship Blackbeard tears along at a breakneck speed and introduces us to a new villain that will last beyond the initial few novels and potential allies to keep it from getting predictable. As the crew breaks into Lord Montgomery’s planet fortress to steal the cure to sugar addiction a new type of spaceship appears to test the mettle of Earth’s defenders. A thoroughly enjoyable adventure series.
This book, Lords of Space, is a great continuation of the saga initiated in Starship Blackbeard. It is written in the same easily flowing style and a joy to read. I even liked it more than the first book in the series. The action, deepening underlying back-story, plot twists and suspense are in ascendance, marching towards conclusion in the next book, Dreadnought. All in all, a great continuation of this enjoyable, fascinating and well conceived space opera.
So, this book picks up where Blackbeard left off, and accelerates quickly!!!

Still trying to clear his name, James Drake discovers a secret that has kept the Hroom in bondage. For this honorable man there is no question about what he must do with the secret, the problem arises from the forces closing in on him. Drake is willing to sacrifice all to save stop the war and save what is left.
Just finished reading this. I liked it even more than the first book, and can't wait for the next one (Dreadnought) to come out, even though this one was just released yesterday. I especially enjoyed the interaction between Drake and his mostly pirate crew, as well as the rising sexual tensions that developed. All in all, a fun, albeit fairly quick read, with plenty of action and plot twists to keep it interesting.
I have read science fiction since first being introduced to Jules Vern 60 years ago. Science fiction has an appeal when it alters your mind set to contemplate new ideas. Michael Wallace's strength is in his characters, he develops them so skillfully, you find yourself looking forward to the next release. There are new ideas in the novels things like space colonists take their culture with them to colonize a planet, animals, plants and their ethic identify; to comment on other thought provoking ideas presented in the novel would spoil it for you.
If you haven't read the Starship Blackbeard Book 1, I would get both, read the first and transition to the Lords of Space, this will set you up to eagerly await the third, hopefully it will not be the last we read in the adventures of Starship Blackbeard.

The author writes in beautiful, erudite English, the kind that is seldom, if ever, seen nowadays (more's the pity). Also, Mr. Gribble treats the rather scabrous subject of Lord Byron's alleged incestuous relationship with his sister with delicacy and maturity. The Love Affairs of Lord Byron is a well-researched work and the author makes very good, convincing points. I can only imagine how this book would have turned out if it had been written today: a tawdry, trashy, sensationalist pamphlet, full of filthy words and even filthier sex.

For me, this woman can do no wrong. I love every book and book one of this new series is no exception. We first get a little peak into Johanna, aka Joe. Joe has a long history, literally. 800 years ago (see, I told you) she intervened when an acquaintance, Abe, was threatening Noah. Granted, as a vampire, Noah could still take care of himseld, even if he wasn't one hundred percent at the time. However, Noah was impressed with Joe and offered her a position as his day walker. Now Joe has some of the benefits, including immortality, without needing to be a vampire.

Flash to the present, Joe is helping out Mr. and Mrs. Calhoun, TJ and Christine, while their regular cook, Meggie, recuperates. Joe has known Meggie's family for generations. TJ, needing to get back in his son's good graces, decides to take Trent some of Joe's cooking as a bribe. It works as Trent is addicted to biscuits and TJ knows Joe's are wonderfully delicious. Unfortunately, Trent is the personification of a Type A personality and has atrocious eating habits, and these lead to Trent having a heart attack. Yes, a wolf shifter in his thirties had a heart attack. I told you he was Type A.

Thankfully, Joe is meeting back up with TJ and Christine at Trent and Elijah's office and arrives as Trent is desperately in need of help. Afterwards, she is talked into accompanying the family to the hospital and then visiting Trent in his room. Before the visit that will forever change her life, Joe is accosted by Max Ford, though Noah knows him by a different name, and the Calhouns intervene.

After bluntly being told by the Doctor about the changes he needs to make, Trent meets Joe and instantly knows she's his mate. Trent does not react well, in fact, he scares her a little, enough to have he calling to Noah to take over while she flees.

Christine, concerned for her son, and Noah, concerned for Joe, essentially his daughter, decide to push the two together and tada "Operation They Need to Mate" is put into motion. Psst...the plan works, pretty perfectly actually. Trent and Joe are in a cabin far away from everyone else and start talking, sharing their histories, etc. We all know mates can't keep their hands off each other for long and that's the case here as well.

Trent and Joe, newly mated and ready to make other changes in their lives, need to decide where to live, what career would make Trent happy and keep him healthy, and figure out what is going on with Max Ford. They're able to piece together some interesting, current deeds, and some horrifying, past deeds, information on Max and with the help of Trent's family, Noah, and a man named Jefferson Marshall, who has his own reasons for wanting Max dealt with.

What follows is a sad, happy, interesting, and wild journey to make Max atone for his actions, keep Trent healthy, help Trent and Joe determine what they want to be when they grow up LOL, and watch Trent and Joe adjust to their newly mated status.

I highly recommend this series and eagerly anticipate the next book. I wonder who it will be about. Hmmmm...There are definitely some intriguing times ahead as we learn more about each Calhoun brother.

Another great series by you Kathi. I can't wait for the next book. The way it started I wasn't sure if I would like it, but it turned fast. Then I couldn't put it down till I finished it.
Good book, I enjoy all of Kathi Bartons books. They occasionally repeat themselves, the family dynamic, the unique friendships with other supernaturals... But all in all, good stories that delve into emotional issues with couples. sometimes the couples move from hate to love a little too quickly, but they always end up strong in the end.
Kathi S. Barton has done it again; her story pulled me in & kept me until I finished it. Trent's & Joe's story was fast paced, it had the good vs the bad element & it had some explicit sex scenes. I really enjoy reading this author's books especially when she puts a great tight knit family in them. I will definitely get more of this author's books in the future.
This is an excellent start to a new series. I liked how Trent was a wolf, but could still fall victim to human frailties, like a stress induced heart attack. I also liked his the parents set Joe and Trent up, that is the exact scheming you would expect from a parent. The sub stories, with the Alpha and with Jefferson and Max, added well to the plot. The bit about the Alpha was an interesting twist. I really enjoyed reading this story and am looking forward to reading more by this author in the future.

1st Book in series was excellent, 2nd was not quite as good but still a fun read, this the third in the series hearkens back to the origninal and starts to explore new areas and has me looking forward to the next in the series.
I wish there was more to the story. A great continuation of the series. It leaves it at a cliffhanger. You want to know if the bad guy finally gets his.

This is the third book in the Cavendish series. The book is very well written and the author should be working with the big publishing companies rather than being self-published. The fourth book of series is due out the end of April and it should be a wonderful addition to the series based on how Chasing Eliza ended. I hope the author continues to add to the series after book 5 comes out this summer. There were a couple minor editing issues but this does not hurt the reading of the book at all. I highly recommend this book along with the earlier books by the author.

I couldn't stay interested in Eliza and Edward as much as I tried I stopped somewhere in Chapter 5. Too much nonsense and the story line was a bit far fetch. The heroine spends her time in the beginning being tracked down by somebody. Eliza is a bar maid in a tavern in a shady part of town. Edward is a man on a mission to locate the elusive Jemima his brother-in-law Peter's lover. It's unclear whether Edward is married to a sister of Peter's or if Peter is married to a sister of Edward. Well Edward ends up at the tavern where Eliza works. He thinks that she is Jemima and doesn't believe Eliza when she says that she is Jemima sister. Well the sister's are running from someone and Eliza doesn't really trust Edward. Eliza just wants find her sister who by the way has taken off without telling Eliza where she was going or when she will return. Leaving Eliza to fend for herself in the hell hole of the tavern in which she works. The owner of the tavern also has a brothel upstairs and he trying to force Eliza to become a hooker for him. The owner hasn't been paying Eliza any wages so she doesn't have any money to leave. She stays in a room upstairs where the brothel is. Well when Edward comes into the tavern on a lead that Eliza maybe Jemima he starts to ask questions. He finds out that Eliza knows Peter and that Jemima has fled somewhere. Eliza is being really vague on the details giving Edward more reason to believe she is Jemima. Edward ends up seeing the owner of the tavern mistreating Eliza who he thinks is Jemima. He's kind of sweet on her and doesn't like seeing her mistreated. So he attempts to rescue her by acting like a customer looking to be serviced. But Edward goes about it the wrong way and ends up with a headache for his troubles while Eliza makes a daring escape from the tavern. For some unknown reason the owner of the tavern sends out some men might be his customers to track her down and bring her back. Not sure why strange men would want to borrow trouble and take off to find a woman who they don't really know and could probably careless about. Anyway Eliza escapes and runs into Edward who helps her escape. They are being tracked by the three unknown men from the tavern. At one point they are tracked down and forced to fight. Edward ends up fatally shooting one of the men and instead of the other two leaving they decide to fight Edward. Why? They admitted to not even knowing the woman and have no attachment to the owner of the tavern. Why risk your life for nonsense even if paid. Well they got paid alright Edward ends up killing all three men. Edward and Eliza take off and take one of the dead mens horse with them to ride. A couple of hours later they are being hunted again and this time the men are well armed and on horse back and looking for Eliza. These men are hunting her down because their boss is who she and Jemima are running from. Eliza and Edward split up so that the men will follow Edward and Eliza and get away. They agree to meet up at an old barn that Eliza knows. Except Eliza has no intention of meeting up with Edward. She leaves and heads in a different direction leaving Edward to wait from her for no reason and she doesn't seem to care if he will be okay. Well several hours later she ends up at an inn. She lies to the innkeeper and says she strayed from her party and would like a room although she doesn't have any money. The innkeeper is friendly and takes pity on her. A strange turn of luck Edward ends up at the same inn he notices that the horse he took off the dead man is in the stable so he goes into the inn in search for her claiming she's his wife and that she is lost. Well he locates Eliza and he's not happy when he finds her. He storms into her room like fancy meeting you here scaring her half to death while she is eating her meal. She wonders why he's upset. I'm thinking "Really". She's put his life in danger then instead of meeting up with him at the barn she leaves him out there to wait and is wondering why he is upset. Somehow he prayed for strength because he didn't kill her on the spot. They end up talking and she wants to leave the inn and head to her family's home. She says there is a secret hiding spot with money for her to live on while she finds Jemima and that she and her sister agreed to leave messages there in the event they become separated. Well the home she speaks of is back the way they came and they run the risk of coming in contact with the people trying to hunt them down. Edward offer's to give her money and bring her to Peter's home where she will be safe. She doesn't even know if there is any money there or even a message. Jemima could have taken the money to live on the run. Eliza is just gambling with her life and hoping that she comes out on top.

Well there too much nonsense and senseless antics in this book. I stopped reading a little after them leaving the inn. If the rest is anything like the beginning it will be full of nonsense, mayhem and foolishness. Eliza's character is only looking out for number one and Edward is following her around with the wrong part of his body and it's not the head on his shoulders.
This book out of the series has been interesting. Don't like to have to wait til June to find out what Edward sees behind Eliza, but I have my theory will just have to wait and see if I'm right!! Overall it was a good plot and like the continuation of getting to know the character's, but if "wild horse's" was used in reference to something one more time I think I was going to lose it..
I should have written this review when I finished this story but I remember this being so good I just wanted to get to the next. I remember Eliza was looking for her sister. Edward had several brothers that was close. They were too late to save Eliza's sister, Jemima who was caught in a trap. I recommend this story. I am going to checkout the other books in this series.
I loved this whole series because they are a bit more adventureous than most Regency books but this poor Hero seemed more REAL in his struggles than most and I liked that he has to work at giving in and following his heart. I think most people with his experiences would have experienced much the same emotions that he did. It sure made him much more realistic than some of the regency heros.
This is one of those books I wish I had the second book on had when I finished the first because I had to skip around to refresh my memory sine I didn't review immediately after reading. That is not too say I didn't enjoy this regency romance because I did, but it was fairly predictable. I will be looking for the second book to provide the better plot twists which this first book hints at with Eliza getting into scrapes and needing saving.
I was riveted from the very start. Now a brief disclaimer... I have enjoyed the first two so I of course had to purchase the third. (which is a total value, heck most of us find that in our couch!) Eliza is a spitfire and well the devil in black ..sigh*... Edward Cavendish is in hot pursuit. She has a secret and he knows it. They are being chased by men trying to kill them to make it worse and she won't tell him why. Okay ... I know why. But I am not going to tell you... ) have to read for yourself.
Excellent I can't wait to read book four, although I am a little upset with how this book ended so I just have to read book four to make sure I was right about what I surmise about the ending. I was unhappy when I read that Jemina was hanged but I kept hoping that it was all a plot to fool Rogan and his father I still believe it is so I will have to read book four very smart of the author. I would recommend this book to any who likes mysteries and romance all in one .

I was born into a wonderful family of 5 children - 4 boys and one girl (me). My mom loved her children more than any other mom I had ever known. We were her favorite pastime; along with reading and cooking.

In June of 1983 her third born son left us, and went to be with the Lord. Cause of death - cancer.

After his death mom crawled into her shell and would not come out. She no longer read her incredible library of books, and her wonderful meals became meals that were not very tasty.

The remaining four of us, including spouses and children could not understand why mom had withdrawn from her normal world. I told her I knew it was hard to lose a child but she still had four other children who loved and needed her very much.

After a few months we realized there was something more than Doug's death causing her problems.

I told dad I would take her to a neurologist and have her checked out. He ran several tests. He came back with a diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease.

My story is about dealing with a loved one on a day to day basis who had been diagnosed with this very debilitating disease. I wanted to do this so possible it would help any of you who are dealing with a loved one, or are a caretaker of a person with this disease.

You will find in reading my story that parts will make you cry, but you will also see some very funny moments.

In one instance that we all laughed about, we had to pull a fast one on my mom.

Mom was addicted to taking Correctol laxatives at bedtime every night. They were little pink pills. I tried, to no avail, to get her to stop taking them every night. One thing about Alzheimer's patients; once they make up their mind to do something you are not going to change it. I had to come up with a solution to this problem.

While grocery shopping one day I noticed a bag of candy that was the same size and shape as her Correctol. I noticed there was a pink one in the bag. Ah ha! I have found the solution to my problem.

Every night at bedtime I gave her 2 pieces of the "pink candy," and she never knew the difference. She did make the comment one day she thought they were not working as well as they did in the past. You have to learn to beat them at their own game.

This is just one of the many humorous and also sad stories of dealing with mom.

I hope my story will help so many of you out there. May God Bless each of you in your particular situation, and I hope my story will be of some help to you.

I found this book to be interesting and very
informative.This book will definitley help someone who is a
care giver for this type of disease. In fact i know of someone at present with this disease i will pass this information on to the care giver.
This story chronicles the journey of a mid life daughter who chooses to care for her Mother through the awful and debilitating stages of Alzheimers. She even pauses to understand the humor and uplifting times.
It's a good book to learn what you could probably go through in dealing with a loved one's alz disease.

This book was written out of love as a memorial to the author's mother. It is written in time-line form about her experience of caring for the mind and body of her mother who she was losing to the terrible disease called Alzheimer's.
She gas written this book to help other caregivers realize in layman's terms what to expect and offer some coping skills.
While reading this biography, you will be helped to understand your emotions and other people's reactions and coping methods.
She has included her love of God and inspiring Bible verses.

A plea to both authors can we please get another’s of Bear and Cyke? This one was great. We see a efficient ‘white hat’ trying to contain himself in work and trust no one while fighting his attraction to the refugees who has kind and helped him.

Two people seemingly complete different in Bear and Cyke come together continuously as Cyke would get injured from doing a duplicitous job. A job he thought was legit but slowly seeing it isn’t and by the time he sees it for what it is must rely on the one person who helped him and who he was attracted to to help him survive. Accept this was risky to his heart. Now he was bringing someone into his world, his life and what surprises him is unwelcome and kind Bear was abour t it.

Bear treated Cyke at first as a patient, than a curiosity and finally someone he wanted in his life and loved. Bear was what Cyke needed. He was strong, confident, supportive and patient. Bear is a gentle soul who falls for the rough around the edges cyke while trying to get Cyke to see him for who he is and can be to him.

A interesting story concept that has a element of risk that keeps the reader intrigued while adding some intimate scenes that allowed us to see the evolution and change in Cyke that Cyke couldn’t let us see. All the unsaid emotions and growth is seen in those intimate moments that put a,smile to the face. A book on finding trust and support in someone to love you conditionally while giving us a entertaining concept of how that trust is found. Now what happens next for these two?

Ok, not every geeky girl is into M/M romance-- but I don't know, this story has all the right elements to turn one around (not that it takes much prompting for some of us). Cyke's habit of breaking and entering into the Sentinel Tech's physical and virtual premises brings him in contact with high-tech security goons, under-the-influence/possibly in-the-pocket cops, and a kind, considerate and hot EMT named Bear. There's mutual attraction between Cyke and Bear from the git-go, but I'm not sure beyond that why these two work together. Nor do I really care. Bear thinks like me-- Cyke is perfect boyfriend material because he's tenacious, dangerous and comes with built-in cutlery. *swoon*

Break and Enter moves along so swiftly that it only lasts about as long as a real B&E. We are only treated to snippets of what's really going on in the Red Cell universe, but we know it'll be an amazing ride. I hope we learn more about Cyke's history and what SenTech is up to in future additions-- and Bear needs a bit more characterization than being a medi-geek (Bionic Man trumps Medi-Geek, right? Though, having a guy who could swap out your hard drives is oh, so appealing. Uh oh, call the nanos in for cleanup because I think I just sprung a leak!).

So, wrapping it up-- Break and Enter is fast-paced, thrilling and sexy. Technophiles will likely geek-out (in a good way), but technophobes will be able to keep up and follow along-- freaking Luddites, hrmph! Four stars-- not nearly enough...definitely needs about .7 more. Gee, thinking in fractional amounts, that's pretty nerdy.

Rachel and Aleks-- do whatever you have to to schedules, Muses and each other, but gives us the sequel soon, 'k?
I liked the storyline in this book. It was different from typical M/M plots and I really enjoyed it. I would definately read more from these authors. I love the originality.
Voinov and Haimowitz create a surprising and dazzling story with suspense and romance, and I'm not a fan of suspense novels. TH
There's something raw and pure in the attraction between Cyke and Bear.
Dark but not too dark, sorta dystopian-lite, with likable leads. The "tech" stuff about our Steve-Austinish bionic hero, Cyke, was especially well-written and inventive--so much that I'd recommend it as a model for anyone contemplating writing about high tech/bionic/enhanced soldier/cyborg yada yada. While the "togetherness" scenes were well-done, uncliched and never sappy, the relationship between Cyke and Bear never really gelled for me. It may be because we just don't see that much of Bear, so other than that he's a good guy, a Paramedic and kind of a tech-geek, I can't really come up with many descriptors for his personality. Still, there's a moment when Bear unlocks a particular piece of computer code that was really original and clever and crazy-hot.

Recommended for those who like urban/black-opsie stuff, with a strong helping of cool tech.

I first read this book back in the 1980's around the time of it's first publication. After 30 years have passed, I decided to read it again and was not disappointed. It was a remarkable page turner even on the second read.

This very well may be the best book written on the American cultural revolution of the mid-20th century. It goes into great detail laying the groundwork as to how it started and why. From the 1940's to the 1980's Storming Heaven explains how American culture, politics, music and art were transformed by forces acting on it from both sides. On the side of the mainstream culture, the CIA was exploring mind control and the psychiatric community was studying madness by administering as well as taking LSD themselves. While the counterculture was trying to end the war in Vietnam and live beyond the shadow of the generation that preceded it by "dropping acid". Storming Heaven depicts the wave of cultural change that swept through American culture, pruning everything in it's path, sometimes for better and sometimes for worse.

A very interesting and balanced account of the history of LSD in America, and how it impacted society. It was also written in a very entertaining style. For anyone interested in this topic, it's required reading.
I loved this book and am deeply disappointed that the promised companion books BURNING DOWN THE HOUSE and CONSCIOUSNESS WARS were never printed.
Jay Stevens' writing is entertaining and educational. The book brought the sixties back to life, when LSD was legal and young people believed they would change the world.
This is a fascinating book, documenting LSD's history and some of the famous and brilliant people that used it, created it, and spread the joy.

Just finished a class at our local college titled "Welcome to Wonderland The Golden Age of Psychedelic Music." This book was recommended by the instructor, who did a great job of evoking the time and the spirit. I recommend this book to everyone who wants to get the straight story about LSD and all the characters surrounding that brief doorway to perception (thanks Dr. Huxley). No famous musicians OD'd on LSD - chalk those deaths up to cocaine, alcohol and heroin. This book is a fascinating and funny tale.
_Storming Heaven_ is a non-ficticious account of the history of the spread of LSD in America and England during the 50's and 60's. It gives detailed accounts of all of the major players in the early days of the synthesization and distribution of this drug. It is not as thoughtful or philosophical as I hoped, and has little to say about the implications and nuances of the actual effects of the drug. However, I came to accept this book for what it is, which is a matter-of-fact description of how this drug progressed from the university offices and laboratories to the streets of San Francisco. This book has much to say about both the east-coast and west-coast acid scenes of the 50's and 60's. In the east, you have Timothy Leary, Richard Alpert, and Alan Watts, and their whole gang of weirdos hanging out in an acid-soaked mansion in Millbrook NY. It is very interesting to read about the(mis)adventures of these three men, all of whom (especially Alan Watts) are gifted and accomplished writers. For those who are fans of their work, _Storming Heaven_ is a must-read if for no other reason than to get some idea of the formative influences of these writers.
The west coast scene, in contrast, was less intellectual and more of a free-for-all. Jay Stevens describes the exploits of Ken Kesey, and the riders of his magic bus. Of course any discussion of Ken Kesey will inevitably lead to a discussion of the Grateful Dead, and the handiwork of their "chemist" mr. Owlsley. Stevens also covers the involvement of the Hell's Angels in this west coast movement. All of this makes for very entertaining, albeit light, reading.
A good companion piece to Acid Dreams. The books have some common ground, but Storming Heaven's focus is more on the social history (and therapeutic uses) of LSD and other psychedelics, but Acid Dreams deals more with the CIA and military's research into acid.

A great deal of time is spent on Timothy Leary, be warned. Storming Heaven was published just as the 1990s psychedelic resurgence was taking off, so aside from a veiled reference to a figure who was probably Alexander Shulgin, that scene's not really covered here.
This is good, competently written, informative and mostly accurate. I have only found one area of the book that is significantly off. When he talks about Elliot Barker's work in Ontario prisons with psychopaths he misrepresents what happened. I don't think it was deliberate, and Elliot has avoided talking to people since he got fired. Elliot lost his job because of a rebellion by the inmate group, not because of using LSD as part of therapy. The recidivism study was done later, not causative. Barker has kept on working and others have also kept working in the field.

Chapter three of Jon Ronson's "The Psychopath Test". Ronson got the first interviews known with the principals since Barker's firing.
A paper by Weisman, Reflections on the Oak Ridge Experiment with Mentally Disordered Offenders, 1965-1968. [...]
If you google the name, you can get the paper for free. There's a lawsuit that has it in full.

Aside from that, this is a good resource I think.
I first read this book back in the 1980's around the time of it's first publication. After 30 years have passed, I decided to read it again and was not disappointed. It was a remarkable page turner even on the second read.

This very well may be the best book written on the American cultural revolution of the mid-20th century. It goes into great detail laying the groundwork as to how it started and why. From the 1940's to the 1980's Storming Heaven explains how American culture, politics, music and art were transformed by forces acting on it from both sides. On the side of the mainstream culture, the CIA was exploring mind control and the psychiatric community was studying madness by administering as well as taking LSD themselves. While the counterculture was trying to end the war in Vietnam and live beyond the shadow of the generation that preceded it by "dropping acid". Storming Heaven depicts the wave of cultural change that swept through American culture, pruning everything in it's path, sometimes for better and sometimes for worse.

Enjoyed from cover to cover. Certainly brought the reader back in time. Can easily relate coming from a large Irish-Catholic family from Queens. Felt like we could have been the Lagalante's neighbor. A funny, honest and heartwarming memoir about a large family growing up in Queens NY in the 1970's. Have not tried the recipes but the stories taste good! Living through those days in NYC, Catholic school, Queens logic, multiracial do's and don'ts I can tell you it's a slice of real life. With a side of big laughs. Stories of family and friends. Universal. or maybe too twisted to be Universal but you probably had a weird family down the block you could recommend the book to.
If you loved Jean Shepherd's A Christmas Story, you're exactly the right person for this book. The story of a quirky family told from a unique and singular point of view. There's the one girl with six brothers angle. There's the crazy extended family and neighbors. And there are the memories of the 1970s and 1980s (Son of Sam, All in the Family, so many more). And the meals, oh the meals! You will snort with laughter. I guarantee it.
Most of this happened just like Maria remembered. She was kinder than she had to be to some of us. Moments in time that bring a wave of feeling that is indescribable. Family. Friends. And good eats. If you love these things you'll love this book. All of us grow up in very specific ways. This book is a personal story that has universal appeal. The book deserves 5 Stars. I left a star off the review just to tick her off.
This book made me feel as though I was having Sunday dinner with The Lagalante family, a family I only recently met through the works of Maria Schultz. Her writing transports you back to a day when life was so much more simple. A time where families gathered to talk, laugh and of course eat. This is not a cookbook but recipes are inside following every chapter. Some were very familiar and so much more simple then today's recipes. Finally got this one off my TBR list and finished - I was not disappointed! I loved Amber's story with her high school sweetheart, John. Little Nicki was adorable and an absolute doll. I loved getting to see the next book in the Lazy Love series! I was very excited to have a book that was a guaranteed HEA with little to no drama.
I was intrigued to see what kind of man Amber would end up with, & I was excited to see it was her high school sweetheart.

Oh how I love these books! It's a wonderful gift that keeps on giving! I laughed out loud, and got all warm inside with the tender romance between the main characters. A great stand alone (3rd book to the Lazy Love Series) I would recommend this book and the other two. Kristen is an amazing author and I love all of her books. When you read them you wonder which character in the books is going to be the next story and you don't want to wait to find out.

If you require your mystery stories to be full of action and intensity, then this definitely isn't the ebook for you. However, if you don't mind a mystery that slowly unfolds, keeping your interest piqued the entire time, then you'll most likely enjoy this download.

STORY - Simon Turner has inherited a cottage from a great-uncle he never even knew he had. Pleasantly surprised, he decides to live there for the next month, restoring it a bit and scoping out the area it's in. Almost immediately after arriving, strange things begin to happen and spectral figures act out scenarios without noticing Simon is there. Is it all a dream? Or is it something deeper that connected to the house?

Although the story doesn't waste too much time before throwing the reader into the happenings, it's still a bit slow. A lot of description is given about things and not too much action actually happens. Also, there really isn't much of a scare factor to the book. While Simon is quite perturbed about everything he sees, the reader isn't really drawn in enough to get spooked. There are never any on-the-edge-of-your-seat moments, but it's OK, because the laid-back pace of the story works. The author keeps the story from being boring by really developing the people and locations that everything is taking place in.

WRITING STYLE - The heavy descriptions that I mentioned earlier are what add to character and plot development so well. The reader is vividly able to picture what is happening, where it's happening, and who it's happening with.

I loved all of the characters in the story; all of them had distinct personalities which caused me to really form opinions about them. From the crazy ex-wife to the friendly storekeeper, I was able to feel as if I really knew them. Simon was sadly probably the most boring of all the characters with a weak spirit that made me not like him too much. It's unfortunate since he's the main character; I wish I had been able to connect a bit more with him.

"Dark Secrets Cottage" is written in first person from the perspective of Simon. It takes place in England, so the writing is very British. A lot of British slang is used, and I was often looking up what words meant. I didn't mind at all, though; it added to the atmosphere for me.

Technically, there were quite a few typos scattered throughout the story. Missing and incorrect punctuation were the biggest culprits, and they were liberally dispersed through the story. There was nothing too distracting, but the download definitely needs to be cleaned up a bit.

WARNINGS - Strong Sexual Scenarios, Language, Mild Violence, Alcohol/Cigarette Reference, Mild Peril

Overall, I did really enjoy this story. There wasn't a lot of action, but that wasn't a negative. The story managed to be interesting without too many intense scenes. The typos were rather heavy, and Simon wasn't totally likable for me, but neither of these cons really destroyed the book. "Dark Secrets Cottage" is a nice, slow mystery that I recommend to most readers.

"For a moment, I sensed an atmosphere of foreboding...."

This is the point at which I would typically turn tail and run! Simon Turner, however, decides it is just the newness of the place that was left him by his Great Uncle John and opts to stay in spite of this feeling. He should have listened. Now, he finds himself sharing this old cottage with specters, specters that begin to appear in the middle of the day as well as at night, with warnings that he must discover the history of this property in order to remain safe.

I really enjoyed this book. The writing style is easy and inviting. It was a quick read for me as it was well laid out and moved along. I really enjoyed the character development as Mr Sleight seems to be quite adept at getting us in to the thoughts and minds of his creations. It is not a terrifying book, but does have its suspenseful moments. I definitely recommend this book for readers of supernatural fiction.
Sleight clearly has an eye and ear for the supernatural, and for anyone who loves a tension-filled read that unravels slowly, like a cryptic and disturbing narrative knot, this book will surely be enjoyed. However, there were a few narrative moments that seemed forced or rushed, and the pace (although slow through most of the narrative) also had the tendency to jump around a bit. All in all, I found the story to be engaging, but I wish there had been slightly more of a plotline between Anna and Simon, as I felt that she was a somewhat underutilized character. There were also a few hackneyed moments that could be found in dozens of mystery/horror novels. The best part of the story was Sleight's way with words; he obviously enjoyed playing with turns of phrase and saying simple things in unique ways. As a writer, I appreciate an author who clearly enjoys his craft, and it makes the reading of a book like this far more pleasant. It was a short, easy, and unpredictable read that I would definitely suggest to other like-minded readers, but I wish that Sleight had either fleshed out the story and made it longer and more complex, or at least packed in more action into the ~150 pages to hold my interest a bit more consistently.
This was a creepy, read-in-the-dark with branches scratching the window kind of book, and as autumn descends on Chicago, I feel like this is a perfect choice for a late-night literary adventure. I must admit, I enjoyed Anna slightly more than Simon, and was happy when she began featuring prominently in the action. Some elements of Simon's personality just didn't gel, as though he was clearly a fictional character, whereas Anna felt like someone you might meet at a local newspaper, a hungry and ambitious young woman who is willing to entertain some rather wild moments to get a story.

The back story of the cottage and the events that surround it throughout the story have the makings of a classic horror story, and Sleight takes full advantage, alternating between simplistic, ominously choppy writing and long, lurid descriptions that seem to send shivers up my spine. Powerful writing from an author who I was unfamiliar with until picking this book up, and to be completely honest, I'm very glad I did. I think he could have worked a bit more on polishing Simon's character, but generally, it didn't detract too much from the story, and I was able to truly enjoy the unpredictable journey of this young man.

This is one you can't put down for very long at a time. Having worked in law enforcement and the judicial system of Wakulla County, as well as being acquainted with the "players" of this writing, I am dumbfounded by my ignorance of the manipulations involved in this murder and trial thereof. It will rattle long held beliefs concerning the death penalty and our "justice" system. Only God knows the truth of this one. May He have mercy on all involved - the good, the bad and the ugly. I am thankful that this was a few years before my move to Wakulla.

This is an outstanding work. Donaldson presents a beautifully written true story about a black man convicted of murder, encompassing a history of his ancestry in rural north Florida and a comprehensive account of the legal case that culminated in his execution. The author, the nephew of his subject, covers a lot of ground with an important story.
I can't find the words to write how horrified I am that racism still rears up in all of its ugliness and ignorance in this country. Hatred is hatred and it is insanity at its worst. Herb brings this to light in his book. He is a gifted writer! That he took action to right this wrong by bringing it to light is a tribute to his soul! It is a must read!
Sometimes a crime can be committed that you remember for years. Other times a crime can happen that you remember for a lifetime. This author not only remembers this horrific crime but does something about it. As you read these gripping pages you et a feel for the mood of the country, the area itself and the community involved. The author writes in a tone that is serious, thought provoking and well studied. This is not just a book of opinions about the case but one that was well researched on all sides. Everything is explained in detailed. There are some shocking truths about this crime and how it relates to America and it's vast racial history. A good job well done, this story will surely keep you captivated.

If you thought that rascism was gone in the south by the 80's, you are sadly mistaken. I was there! I reread pages many times and kept saying WHERE WAS I? Kept me enthralled through the whole book. Written in an entertaining way eventhough the subject matter is intense. LOVED THIS BOOK
very interesting book about the county I live in. Presents a perspective that is clear and informative. It is not a whine about mistreatment, merely a reflection on the events. When Donaldson shares his opinions, he is clear that is what he is doing.
I read this book in two days. It was hard to put down. I found it shocking that Florida could execute someone based on the evidence that was presented. My heart went out to all familes involved.
