Toronto’s Babalao Stereo Club are quickly making a serious name for themselves in the city’s Latin‐Funk music scene with their high‐energy grooves and sultry sound. Thursday, September 15th marks the debut of their long‐awaited first full‐length CD, The Latin Bang Theory, at Toronto’s historic Gladstone Hotel. Special guests for the evening will include Toronto’s percussion posse Samba Squad, award‐winning Venezuelan guitarist Pinguino and DJ Double K from Parkdale Funk.

Formed in 2006, Babalao Stereo Club is an impressive Latin‐Funk group consisting of five highly skilled and extremely talented musicians – Samba Squad co‐director and front man, percussionist David Figliano, guitarist Manuel Rivas, bassist Jamie Sanchez, pianist Adam Silver and drummer Luis Bertolotti. Citing influences that include Los Amigos Invisibles, Carlos Santana and Los Tetas, this innovative five piece band blends spicy Latin elements such as Salsa, Merengue and Mambo with North American Funk, House, Afrobeat and contemporary dance rhythms.

Babalao Stereo Club enjoyed a successful EP release in 2008 as well as a series of high‐profile gigs such as opening for Femi Abosede and Grammy Award winning Latin sensation Alex Cuba. A night dedicated to rockin’ rhythm & blues 7″ 45s from 1957 to 1967! This month we’re gonna be focusing on the kind of music that yo’ grandparents were dancin’ to on the beaches of Cali and all the other hot surfin’ spots all over the world!

My good mate Mogpaws of Simmer Down fame moved back to Toronto recently from a little stint in Brazil. He ended up moving literally around the corner from me, so we decided to get together one rainy Sunday afternoon and have a meeting of the minds. Here are few words from Splattermonkey:

I used to be a bit of a lazy digger when it came to collecting old funk and soul music. Buying compilations seemed like an easy way to find those old funk tunes that I wanted to have in my collection. When I first started listening to the Parkdale Funk Show, back in early 2008, I felt inspired to start collecting 45’s. Double K would compile a lot of amazing tunes that I’ve heard on compilations but somehow, they sounded better on 45. So, with the help and inspiration from other collectors around the city, like General Eclectic, DJ Standfast and of course Double K, I slowly started to build up my funky 45 arsenal. When The Parkdale Funk Show started the “Toronto Funk Series”, I thought to myself, “I’d love to record a mix for this series but I have to record it using 45’s.” So, I waited until I had the right mix of funky 45’s to record for the series. Unfortunately, I sort of failed at my attempt because the third and second to last songs came from a 12″ album and a 12″ Ghana funk compilation but I’m still proud of this mix because it’s full of party tunes that have been getting the dance floors moving at my weekly basement soul party, Pass The Butter at Andy Poolhall located at 489 College Street in Toronto! This ain’t no regular party, this is a Super Party!

It’s been some time since I posted one of my own proper 45 mixes, so I got down to business over the weekend and came up with the Big City Lights Mix. As usual I’m all over the place and I start out with some slower sublime soul 45s and move into some faster tempo funk 45s while throwing in some classic Northern Soul spins as well. Some of these 45s are a bit on the scratchy side, so please excuse the hiss on this mix. I hope you enjoy it - there are some big hitters here!

The Parkdale Funk Show is finally back online after some technical difficulties and equipment malfunctions.  I have upgrading some of my equipment and from now on the podcasts are going to be sounding proper! Thanks for your patience.

Lets roll spring in with some proper funk 45s! I’m a bit all over the place with this mix but that’s how I like it. There are two tunes I want to give a shout out to. One is the Original Black Sheep of The Family 45 from the Cultures Of Soul. This young label pulled the original master tapes from the original band members and let this great 1978 banger finally get to see the light of day. It’s the first release on Cultures Of Soul and hopefully we’ll see more coming out of their camp - What a tune! Secondly, the Billy Love tune on FNR records is a pure funk bomb! It’s also the first release on Funk Night Records out of Detroit and what a job they did on the JB styled winner. I love seeing “new funk” done properly! I hope to hear more music coming out of these two indie labels.

So dust off your dancing shoes and give your neck a stretch for a solid  hour of soul & funk 45 gems.

It’s time to slow things down a bit here at Parkdale Funk, but only in a good way! Parkdale Funk has always been about playing the best tunes I can get my hands on and this mix is no different. The Parkdale Funk Show is proud to present the Funkypea Soup Mix by Chris Allwaysdiggin’! It’s a very hardy and tasty mix that I’m sure everyone will enjoy. Chris is out of London UK and is a hands on digger with dusty fingertips. Pull out your can opener and bust out some funky pea soup!

Here are a few words from Chris Allwaysdiggin’…

“Big up to Double K first and foremost for featuring “THE FUNKYPEA SOUP” mix on Parkdale Funk.

The Ingredients: A selection of 45s, some old, some new, funk and then some. Kicking off with some funky vegetables from The Vibrations, a recession fueled funky tale of a Harlem food shortage. Then to the O.G. Lyrics of John McCain every ounce the old skool. “PIMP” by the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band, which is the source for the 50 Cent track.

Add spice with some reggae/rocksteady tunes from Tommy McCook, Bill Campbell and a reggae/funk crossover from Buster Pearson’s killer instro.

Add a dash of momma’s gravy “Yum-Yum” followed by the southern funk of Benny Gordon. At this point we ask, is it funky enough? Or do you want some more? There’s some sister funk from Pamela Cole and the Jive Turkeys with B.A.

From the hip-hop chef Pete Rock, who immortalized the horn (the creator) from King Curtis’ “Instant Groove”

Add four more funk 45s by Freddy King, Mr. Percolator, The Soul Avengers, and the Mighty Groove Makers. There’s also a fine cover of the Boogaloo Joe Jones cut “Brown Bag”, done with a guitar that’s every bit as quick and tight as the original!

The fifth annual Parkdale Youth Festival happens on Saturday September 19th, 2009 around the Parkdale Town Square (Queen Street and Cowan Avenue) from 12pm to 8pm. The focus for 2009 is to “Initiate and Educate” the youth of Parkdale, and the surrounding communities within Toronto, by providing workshops, performances, and interactive installations that are programmed by youth for youth. This year brings forth a renewed interest in the arts, encompassing music, painting, writing, reading, photography, dance, theater, and other forms of performance works and artistry.

The Parkdale Funk Show has always set out to recognize the work of often overlooked or forgotten musicians of the past. I have a deep passion and love of the genres represented on my website. However, one thing that I have been guilty of is not giving enough respect to the new wave of current musicians keeping the soul and funk sounds alive. I’m all about the digging and turning up “unknown” gems, but some of the best material out there is easily available online or in your local record shop. So this episode entitled “The New Funk Mix” is all about giving respect to the soul brothers and sisters out there keeping the scene alive.
