Every so often, change out the container with something from around the house for a little refreshment (i.e. vase, coffee can, flower pot, pitcher). - Tupperware is great for organizing kitchen items. For example, organize all those little packets of sugar in the pantry; contain your extra chip clips; separate the small items like wine stoppers from the rest of the utensils in that big drawer. - Cookbooks can be a fun way to decorate your kitchen. If you have a large collection, rotate the ones you have out. Display books on grilling in the summer and holiday meals in the winter.

Discard the discards. Throw away all unnecessary items. For example, get rid of those old ketchup packets in your desk drawer; recycle/shred the pile of paper of drafts pertaining to a completed project; trash the outdated files on your computer desktop. Sort simply. Make an "office supply" drawer for easy retrieval of pens and the like. No need to separate the staples from the paper clips. Gather your paper piles by project and archive them in a labeled box-bottom hanging file or a magazine holder. No need to separate them into further subcategories within the project; if each project's documents are together you'll find what you need. Do the same for the files on your computer. Change it up. Hang new artwork on the wall or put a new decorative piece on your desk. This will give your office a refreshed look without spending much time or money.

Get everyone involved. Even if it's just you and your significant other, doing laundry is much easier when the rest of the family pitches in. Everyone can... -empty the pockets of their pants/shorts before throwing them into the hamper. A great incentive for this is to make a rule: ALL THOSE THAT DON'T EMPTY THEIR OWN POCKETS WILL HAVE TO GIVE THE CONTENTS TO ANOTHER FAMILY MEMBER. This an easy way to make a few dollars! :) -put their laundry in a hamper (and not on the floor). -bring their hampers to the laundry room on laundry days. -put their own folded laundry away.

How long does it take to get organized?

There is getting organized (complete reorganization) and there is staying organized (maintenance). Either way, it all depends on you. Getting organized: -how long it takes you to make decisions (i.e. keep or donate?)
-if you are willing to let things go (i.e. no need to keep grocery receipts from last year)
-how easily you can adopt new habits (i.e. going through the mail as soon as it comes)
Staying organized: Organization requires regular maintenance. Let's say you spend 5 hours organizing your closet, and it's now in tip top shape. Maintaining this order means that you are putting things back in their proper places on a daily basis and getting rid of items every few months or so. Hence, committing to this regular maintenance could mean that staying organized takes 5 minutes. Ooh how lovely!
