What to look forward to in 2009

This new year is already a month old and people have started to discuss what type of year it will be. Well, economically this year looks to be worse than 2008. Many major stores and companies are looking to close. I was reading an article in Yahoo Finance by Rick Newman who lists several potential companies that may collapse in 2009:

Rite Aid- This friendly drug store could disappear from the street corners.
Claire's Stores - A terrible event for teenage girls everywhere
Chrysler - Its bad when a motor company is going under
Six Flags - I hope not, I really enjoy theme parks
Blockbuster - Im not sure why this has not gone under already with the popularity of Netflicks
Krispy Kreme - I love these doughnuts and this would be a crime to humanity
Sirius Satellite Radio - Whats not to like about radio without the commercials

With companies failing left and right and people losing their jobs it is tough for people to find stability and faith in our economy. However, as bad as things might get we still need to look on the bright side and invest in our economy or things will never get better.

A new week

So its the start of a new week and its full of possibilities. Yesterday was nothing short of pure bliss. It was 71 degrees outside and that promoted a visit to the park for me and my family and friends. While there we engaged in a great game of backyard football, filled with laughs and great moments. All in all I still can not get over the fact that it was 71 in February. Its times like these were friends and family matter all the more. So, the next time its 71 outside you know what to go do.

The Start of Nascar on Fox

Well, tonight starts the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series on Fox. Over the last 9 years Fox has covered some of the largest changes in the sport and have provided amazing coverage over the years. The Budweiser's Shootout will be the first race of the season and many drivers are excited to just get back in the cars and do their jobs. However, there is a new format for this special race and Im not sure if I like it yet. The top six of each of the four manufactures will get into the race and then they have the opportunity to name a wild car driver. So in the end there are 7 drivers for each manufactures. In this year's race there will be 28 drivers, the most ever for this event. For those not familiar with the old system, only pole winners from the previous season and previous Shootout winners are allowed into the race. So I will have a better opinion of this format after I see how it pans out tonight. I just think that this new format losses the exclusiveness of the old system. Only time will tell.

Ordering Textbooks Online

So Ive been in class since January 12th of this year and as with most college courses textbooks are required. However, for some reasons the publishers like to make these books sometimes cost as much as the class itself. With that taken into account many people like myself look for ways to to save money and get the books at lower prices. What better place than to look online, and thats exactly what I did. I ordered all of my class books from half-off.com and other college textbook sites on January 9th, the Friday before classes start, and I just got my English textbook today. It took them over three and a half weeks to ship it, and thats not the worse part. Im still waiting on two other books, American Government and Sociology. So my advice to others is when looking for textbooks online dont order from half-off.com unless you know the seller is a reliable source. I will never buy from that individual again, lesson learned.

The Super Bowl: A reflection of the game

Like almost half of America last night at around 6:30 I made my way to the room with the big screen T.V. to watch the big game. Their was food galore to pick at when I got hungry and company to enjoy this festive event with. The clash was between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals. For the record I was going for the underdogs: the Cardinals. Personally, Im a huge Patriots fan but since they werent in the big game I went with the next big choice. Over the next three hours I watched and cheered on a team that looked like it had no chance in the world to win this thing. The score had been 17 to 7 Pittsburgh leading. And then like magic the Cardinals made some amazing moves and they were back in the game with less than a minute to go with a lead of 23 to 20. I was shocked and thought how cool is this, I might have the chance to see the greatest Super Bowl upset and comeback all in one game. However, that was not to be. With 35 seconds left in the game Ben Roethlisberger made an amazing pass to Santonio Holmes to put the Steelers in the lead and secure their 6 Super Bowl victory(most of any team in the NFL). While I was disappointed in the end result of who had one, I was the most satisfied I have been in a long time with the level of competition in the big game itself. Both teams gave it all it had and in the end put on one hell of a show. Congrats to the Pittsburgh Steelers on a job well done, and to the Arizona Cardinals who never gave up even when things looked bad.

Super Bowl commericals

Well tomorrow is the big game that everyone is going to be watching. While everyone knows that the Pittsburgh Steelers will be playing the Arizona Cardinals, most people will be watching for the famed Super Bowl commercials. The United States along with most of the rest of the world is in the middle of an economic rescission. Its time like these in which people should bond and share the burden together. However, that is not to be the case in most business circles. The average 30 second slot this year will cost businesses 3 million dollars, the most ever. Its greedy television studios like this that make me feel squeamish because all they care about is money. We should take times like these to focus on the basics and what is truly important in life like friends, family, and just getting by.

The change to digital

Many people are aware of the upcoming change to digital for televisions in the U.S. on February 17, 2009. Well just the other day the senate passed a bill that could delay this change until June of this year for those who have not made the necessary changes to their televisions. This bill still needs the approval of the house who will vote on it sometime next week. My problem is that the average age in the senate is 62 years old. How are people that are of that age suppose to be making choices for the younger generation when most of them don't understand the technology that is constantly being developed today. Why should we push back the digital change when people have know about this change for over 5 years. Yes, their are people out their that haven't changed their televisions, about 6 million or so. However, that should be the problem for those who did the right thing. Those people have had over 5 years to take care of this problem. Why should the Americans who pay attention in this country have to suffer when others don't jump on the bandwagon. I might be tooting my horn a little loud, but I think that if we as a nation are willing to succumb to little details like this how are we as a nation suppose to lay down the bigger details.
