3) Robin Kissinger has a big WIN with her new internet radio show. The show is on the Voice America network, their 7th Wave channel which is about visionary and transformation radio. Her show is: Sing4All on iRadio - Transforming Lives with the Power of Singing. For us CEO Space grads, she is going to interview Hugh Ballou here in the near future.

BLUE THING #5: Featured Company of the Week

When pondering over this week’s Blue Thing Company of the Week Feature I was going to first place this in the “Deal” Blue Thing, but once I realized the significance of what was actually happening here, I had to select this as our Company Feature. This should be encouragement for all those businesses that are struggling.

Jerry Hickman, several years ago, invented a device he calls the 911 Locator. Basically, when you call 911, the invention sets off a strobing light outside your home. This is to catch the attention of the emergency team often saving minutes when they can’t seem to find the specific location. As one who has served as a member of emergency response teams, Jerry knows that this could be the difference in saving a life.

Last June, Jerry won the Delaware Entrepreneur of the year award for the best business plan and most prepared to receive funding. Immediately, he received offers of support. He had the investor’s interest. Knowing that he had the money coming in, he couldn’t wait. He began his process of expansion. He was ready to get his business launched in a big way.

You probably don’t want to read the next part because you think you already know what I’m about to tell you. Right? Yes, your right. The money didn’t come in. It’s November, and he is still getting promises but hasn’t seen a nickel yet.

Just this last month, as I communicated with him, he was so discouraged he was ready to fold it up and get a job. Nothing was looking like he was going to pull this one out of the hole.

Well, let’s now look at what has just happened in this last week:

·After posting an announcement on the CEOspace group on Facebook Jerry received a multitude of email and communications

·He is now working on increasing his dealer base for the "nationwide launch";

·He is meeting with AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals this week. They will be featuring his product in a showcase and offering it in their virtual mall;

·He is planning a capital strategy meeting with team members and another meeting with allies that will be scouting;

· He has already had a couple of meetings with potential investors;

·He met with realtors looking at potential locations that will accommodate the predicted growth of his 911 locator business;

·He will be meeting in North Central NJ with a potential strategic partner;

·Finally, He is working with several web developers to revamp and repair the 911 Locator website;

Does this sound like a business that was just ready to fold up just weeks ago?

As a child, I grew up on a farm and learned a good strong work ethic. I also learned something that is deadly to growing a business. My dad always told me: “If you want to get a job done right, you might as well do it yourself. Your always going to be disappointed with others”. I must say in my conversations with Jerry in October, he was feeling he was living just that. But, I want to encourage you, if you have ever thought this, it is a “poor man’s mindset”.

The reality in growing a solid business: You must learn to rely on others. You must build a team. Learn what your strengths and weaknesses are. Don’t spend all your time working to improve your weaknesses but rather, find others to supplement where you need help.

Yes, others may disappoint you. They may downright fail you. Don’t quit. You must work to recover. In your new wisdom, find a replacement and move on. For those who can’t adjust, failure is inevitable.

Beyond Networking: Being with Ron Sukenick

You're on your way home from a networking event, and, well, you're rather pleased with yourself. Not only were you able to collect several dozen business cards while handing out a similar number of your own, but two individuals you met actually gave you "leads". Now you have in your proud possession the names and contact information for companies your networking friends think might be able to use your products and services. What could possibly be better than that?

And the answer is…(TV quiz show drum roll here) Referrals!

Let's backtrack a moment. In this Beyond Networking blog, remember, the goal is to reach further - and deeper - beyond traditional networking, getting to the point where networking really starts to work for us. The fact is, study after study demonstrates that your best clients meet you through an introduction from someone they already trust. In other words, the way to meet really good clients is through referrals.

Every sales training course (I've taken many and led many!) talks about referrals, and about how lack of commitment to getting referrals can limit a business person's success. Bill Cates, author of Get More Referrals, has something truly worthwhile to say about the big R's, something very much in tune with my Beyond Networking principles. A common error, Cates says, is making referrals be about you, where you, in the old sales-school style, explain to clients that your business is built on referrals. What the clients hear is that, in order for you to keep providing them with good client service, they need to help you grow your business by supplying names of their friends and associates.

"Clients give referrals only when they see the value in the work you do," Cates explains, suggesting that if a business is not getting referrals without asking, it's a signal something's wrong.

In coaching hundreds of people over the years, I've arrived at a very simple conclusion about all of this: R's (referrals) depend on R (relationship). As we continue to create deeper relationships with our clients, coworkers, and network contacts, referrals will follow. My book, The Power Is In The Connection, is all about relationships.

What's better - much, much better - than a lead? A relationship, and its inevitable result - a referral!

RISK AND REALITY: Do You Still Think Crises Are Mere Consultants’ Creatures?

Well, all along our professional life of Risk and Crisis Management consultants and coaches we have been confronted with clients that expressed themselves with statements like: “well, you know, this kind of stuff only happens to others”, generally followed by “we are too small, … too large, too smart, too powerful”, etc. (please refer to http://theglobalfuturist.blogspot.com/2009/10/16-phrases-to-illustrate-some-human.html for more details).
Relentlessly we have kept our stance: crises are foreseeable, crises can be as costly as a natural disaster or a major accident, the public IS THE JUDGE, and the sentences he delivers cannot be appealed etc.
Examples abound in our courses and our latest book, but the one that follows is exceptional for many aspects.

United Airlines Lost $180 Million due to YouTube Video

We learned about this crisis as everyone else, via the media reporting in the morning news about how social media can seriously damage a brand.

The Story

Take a musician (Mr Dave Carroll, from Canada) going to a concert, who sees the airline ground crews manhandling his instrument (a beloved guitar) to its death (broken neck, fatal wound indeed).
Imagine other passengers witnessing the massacre under the indifferent look of totally uninterested flight crew zombies.
Mix to this an interminable series of communications between the victim and a ice cold airline management who refuses to take any responsibility.
Bad enough? Well, yes, for the victim, for sure; but the airline had no clue how bad things were going to turn for them!

You see, our victim-musician had the interesting idea to make a country tune (titled “United Breaks Guitars” by Dave Carroll ) out of his sad story, and such a nice one, complete with an amusing video, that became an instant success on Youtube (appx 4million views as we speak).

The Results

United Airlines share price dropping by 10% (i.e. 180MUS$ loss), equivalent to over 50,000 replacement of the defunct guitar. I do not think any Court would have punished so harshly the airline, but this is the power of the public-JUDGE: exemplary punishements and NO APPEAL.

Conclusions

In the era of internet, social media and networks, there is no hiding, there is no mercy for the culprits. And in period of exacerbated sensitivity to poor corporate behavior, like amidst a recession, and in the aftermath of large scandals (Madoff, banks etc.), punishments are going to get tougher and tougher.

There used to be a saying that one happy customer would report to three other people, but an unhappy one would spell his story to seven. Well, welcome to the world where a bad story can be broadcasted or is echoed out to four million within days, and for free!

BREAKTHROUGH NETWORKING: Create an Effective Verbal Business Card

People don’t buy a stove because it’s three-feet high and white. They buy it because it cooks their food. When you start your conversations with words that cook others’ food, you will convert them into clients much more easily. People buy benefits, not features.

The way you do this is with a benefit-laden Verbal Business Card (VBC), the front end of your elevator pitch that entices people to want to learn more about what you can do for them or their associates.

Last month I discussed many characteristics of an effective VBC and how to use it as the front end of your LinkedIn elevator pitch. Today, I am going to share what to include … and not … in your generic VBC. This is the one you use when you meet people who are not employed by the same company or in the same industry.

To be Included

Your first, last name. Everyone suffers from memory lapses; so even if you are wearing a name tag, repeat your name every time you start a new conversation. It also helps people know how you preferred to be called, i.e., Bill vs. William and how to pronounce a more difficult name like mine: B-or-seth. (The “j” in Bjorseth is silent, and some people wouldn’t know this without first hearing it.)
What you do. This is key. People always ask, “What do you do?” yet so many people answer by sharing “who” they are or “how” they do it.
Benefits to others. How does what you do benefit the people you are meeting or people they know?
Active verbs. Include the most powerful words in the English language in your introductory words. You can feel the strength in words like “help,” “work with,” “share” vs. linking verbs such as “is”, “am” “was.”

Probably not Included

Company name. Don’t take up precious seconds with a name that is not immediately recognizable. I could use “AT&T” when I worked there. I never use my company, “Duoforce Enterprises.” It is not a household word and, therefore, doesn’t add immediate value. People might pause and think, “What is a Duoforce?” Instead, I want them to concentrate on me because I have spent time and money branding Lillian Bjorseth. Duoforce is the necessary corporate structure. Your company name could be important at an industry networking event.
Company location. Generally, this is not necessary in your first few words in a generic VBC. This could be important if you work for a multi-location company and are attending a company function. You have plenty of time to talk geographical locations latter in the conversation.
Adjectives and adverbs. Use only with careful scrutiny. They are modifiers, and the extent to which they do this is usually at your discretion. They reflect opinions and often are exaggerated and superfluous. Refrain from telling people you, your products, services or talents are the best, quickest, greatest or most reliable within the opening seconds of meeting them.

Not Included

Company title. Including your title in your first words is not necessary or wise. If you are a vice president, manager, director – this is not necessary introductory information. After all, how many bank vice presidents have you met … and have no idea what they do? If you are a president or CEO, it could well be your ego you are feeding vs. relating valuable data.
How you do it. How you do what you, especially differently that others in your field, comes later in your elevator pitch. Make sure you have honed those words well, too.
Business label. Avoid words like accountant, attorney, trainer, etc. These words are nebulous and add little value in those precious first moments. For instance, if I were to introduce myself as a trainer, it could be interpreted as an animal trainer, personal trainer, soft skills trainer, technology skills trainer, etc. I want people to focus on easily understandable and valuable information, rather than giving them a reason to ponder what kind of trainer I am.
Industry jargon. Avoid jargon at all costs in your generic VBC. Others won’t understand. Jargon is acceptable in your industry version and possibly in your intra-company version if you are talking with others who understand your responsibilities.

to yourself and patient with your efforts. A succinct, easily understandable VBC can take hours to create and often is done best under the tutorage of an objective outside source such as a networking skills coach.

A NOTE FROM THE CHAIRMAN: Soccer and Networking

On Saturday, November, 7th, I experienced what most parents dream of. As if in a movie, I got to witness my 9 year old son become the hero of his soccer team.

Some parents will really understand where I'm coming from here and others certainly won't, but this really does tie into networking.

Now I have never been accused of being athletic - it's just not who I am, nor am I an avid sports-watcher, but my son is a huge soccer fan (he loves other sports too, and as a father I've felt compelled to watch televised sports with him as a "bonding" ritual).

This year he was on the last place team - plagued by low turnout, an extremely mild-mannered, low-key coach and just plain bad luck, although they did win one game and tie a few others. Knowing this, and also encouraging my son to play his best game as opposed to win it, I would always praise him for a job well done despite his team having lost. This year for him also saw him experience some growing pains as he, an excellent defender, was moved to the front line offense and had to develop a slightly different set of skills.

After coming in last place, his team went into the playoffs against the first place team and beat them in double overtime (no ties in playoffs) - what an upset. Many of us parents thought this to be a fluke. As they went into their next playoff game (the semi-finals) they had just enough people to play - no substitutes (for those who don't know, soccer is a strenuous sport that requires speed and endurance - substitutes come in for tired players). Adding insult to injury, two of the kids on his team showed up with just minutes to go before the game started. The other team wore war-like face paint, had three substitutes and were all early. Yep...this was looking ugly.

My son's team started off strong and scored the first goal. Then, the other team scored two within moments of each other to gain the lead. In the second half, the opposing team scored yet another goal making the score 3 to 1. One of my son's teammates (the one who scored the first goal) scored the second...3 to 2. Then the magic happened...my son scored the tying goal. It was looking like they would once again go to overtime, when with just seconds to go, he got the winning goal.

The crowd was cheering and I never screamed more in my life. They were going on to the finals and would now be either the second or first place team - either way, the top two teams get a trophy and that's what meant the most to my son. What meant most to me was what this experience had done to his confidence.

To play that up, I asked him in front of the rest of the family as we were driving home how it felt to have been the one to bring a trophy home to every member of his team. His response was, "it wasn't just me, I had a lot of help". How true, indeed. This got me thinking.

So what does this proud soccer dad story about his son have to do with networking?

Everything.

Common knowledge tells us that networking is about building relationships. My son's response hit home for me the idea that his team is a network that through hardship was able to find a way to work well as a team.

It also made me think about the other team too - they were prepared, they were organized, and they thought they were going to win. In networking, while it pays to be prepared, we often neglect to take into account that randomness and entropy can affect outcome in very unexpected ways.

Perhaps being the smaller team with less players who had to play the entire game by themselves caused them to have to trust each other more. Perhaps the shared hardship strengthened their resolve even further.

In networking, we can often see ourselves as underdogs as we must navigate our way through those we think may hold power over us. It is through the power of tenaciousness, repetition, consistency and strength of character that even the underdog can rise to the top and win the day.

At the time of this writing, I don't know whether my son's team will win the championship - I do know his team will be in either first or second place. One thing is for sure - they won't quit playing until the very end.

"I think everyone can agree that we are in information overload. That is not really even a question anymore. The real question is the one Adam asks...how much info is enough? Its like asking many TV channels is enough? I don't want to go "Forest Gump" on this but it really depends on how interested in the subject the target audience is. If they are really into it, then its hard to provide too much. Take sports enthusiasts (which I am not). How many sports channels do you really need on cable? 100? 200?. I think at some point it becomes almost like an addiction. I wonder if any science has been done on information content addiction?

"I heard recently that Steve Jobs is considered the world's best presentor. Its because he never deviates from 3 points in his pitches. And he simplifies the message in a way that people immediately identify with. Apple iPod is 'thousands of songs in your pocket' per Jobs. Shear beauty in its simplicity.

"This was so interesting in so many ways that I don't know where to start. I'll definitely be sharing this with members of my industry.

"I find it ironic that two of the respondents who complained that their chambers lacked a membership focus were actually on the Board. Did they not try to bring this up? Did they not realize that as Board members, their role is to guide the staff and provide an overall vision for the organization? Or did they finish their terms and move on? That's too bad if that happened.

These organizations allow you to socialize and network in the local community and expand nationally if/when necessary."
