By adding 12 weeks to the training schedule, NYRR hopes to attract runners from a wider spectrum of ability, from experienced runners to novices — even people who have never run a step.

At NYRR, our purpose is to grow the community and sport of running to promote health and wellness. Of course, the ING New York City Marathon will still be organized to attract the best in the world, the best in each age group, and experienced runners looking for a personal best. But now there’s more room — and more time — for everyone.

Five months later, New York Road Runners, the nonprofit organizer of the New York City Marathon, signed a contract to buy the same 60 percent share for $8.5 million.

NYRR never completed the transaction:

The Road Runners never paid Mr. Vargas any money, prosecutors said, but put $1 million into an escrow account. The group also spent about $300,000 in fees for lawyers and other consultants related to the transaction, prosecutors said.

He has not trained for a full marathon, according to Mary Wittenberg, the chief executive and president of the New York Road Runners, the race’s organizer.

“We’re very happy to have Lance’s support,” Wittenberg said, but she added, “I’ll be surprised if he runs.”

“Lance had expressed interest through e-mails,” Wittenberg said. “But with a competitive athlete, you can’t pace unless you start the race. We gave him that option, which we are happy to extend. We don’t know if that’s of interest to him.”

Roosevelt Island is that two mile long sliver of land, only 800 feet at its widest, that many of us have seen only while riding in a cab down the FDR Drive in Manhattan or while crossing the Queensboro Bridge. But with flat, paved paths running nearly the entire perimeter of the island, cool breezes off the river and almost no traffic, Roosevelt Island is a fantastic place to explore as a runner.
