Playing Scales is Fun
Watch Down the Rabbit Hole from The ART of Teaching (AoT) ♫ Video

We all know the benefits of playing scales.
Why practise scales?
Playing scales inevitably helps to develop pianist skills thus improving keyboard fluency. Posture, hand position, co-ordination, balance between hands and movement of the arm all can be checked when playing scales. Most importantly, the sense of tonality and pattern can be acquired through playing scales - this speeds up the learning of NEW PIECES (a benefit when attempting sight-reading tests). This also develops playing with an even and a quality tone. This builds aural awareness. It is a good practice to encourage students to sing the scales if within vocal range. Playing scales from two to four octaves throughout all grade syllabus increases familiarity with the geography of the piano.

Playing Piano is Fun

Playing Piano is Fun Books 1 and 2 teach the very basics for piano playing. The tuneful eight-bar tunes were designed to catch the attention of the students and allow them to STAY FOCUS. The pieces in Books 3 and 4 are sixteen bars, this needs longer attention span. The forms of composition are slowly being introduced step-by-step. Upon completion of Book 4 the students can prepare ANY music examination board on Grade One piano syllabus both in practical and theory. They will have a STRONG FOUNDATION in the four main areas:-
1) Good finger dexterity in playing
2) Good reading in music literacy
3) Good musicianship in listening skills
4) Rudiments of music
All these QUALITIES make preparing an examination or playing the piano FUN and ENJOYABLE.

PpiF is a progressive four-book piano tutor series. It is designed to meet the developmental needs of children as they journey through the wonderful world of music. It is the first piano tutor series to include a teacher’s guide (on the even number pages in Books One and Two) besides each students’ score (on the odd number pages). Materials in Books Three and Four will progress on to Grade one practical and theory syllabi. The author encourages the students to be CREATIVE - expressing themselves not only on playing but in drawing too. There are prompters on each piece to encourage the students to draw in the book. To awaken the musical interest of the children, the author-composer has included characters from Lewis Carroll's classic stories of Alice's adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-glass. All the tunes are composed by Alice Chua. Remember to bring smiles and laughter in your lessons. It is always a joy to see the enthusiasm of the children in your lessons. After the students can play the score confidently, you can expand the piece by teaching
i) auxiliary note - add F# between two Gs
ii) a Right Hand accompaniment - playing two notes - thumb on C and 5th finger on G along with a G played by LH
iii) minor key - flattened all Es in the score changing it to a minor mood
iv) etc., etc… ENJOY
💖👂🎶 Remember to include aural training when teaching theory. It is of utmost importance that the students must ‘hear’ (and sing/play if possible) when learning a new theory element. As an example, learning to play a descending scale - Down, Down, Down the Rabbit Hole from Playing Piano is Fun Book 3 and leading to playing Contrary Motion.

About the Author

Alice is a passionate and enthusiastic musician, a versatile arranger, composer and music author. To this date, she has written many music books, used extensively in Asia and the United Kingdom. She is also an examiner with the London College of Music.

Whilst living in Malaysia and Singapore, Alice was Chief Music Instructor for Yamaha Music Asia. She opened new music schools in Singapore, Malaysia and Myanmar, and started music programs for preschoolers in Indonesia. This involved training teachers and designing music curricula suited specifically for each country. She frequently represented Malaysia in various international conferences hosted by Yamaha Music Foundation.

Now residing in London with her daughter, Alice divides her time between sharing her love of music with her students and invigilating examinations and competitions in Europe and the Far East. She believes that music should be played from memory, so that every child has the confidence to perform in any environment at any time, without needing to rely on a score. When children can express themselves freely in this way, it develops their ability to immediately engage their audience, and to derive from the music a personal sense of enjoyment.

Inspirations (Winners' Musical Moments for Pianists)

Many of us, teachers are doing our best: engrossed in teaching students to read notes and play the piano tutor and examination books in the weekly lesson schedule. If we follow the traditional teaching/learning lesson, we are left with little or no time to develop our students’ MUSICIANSHIP further. Synopsis
Dandelion, being a weed, was ostracised by the flowers in their magical kingdom. The final blow came when the beautiful Rose became the queen of the flowers while she was cast aside. In a combination of envy, hurt, loneliness and anger, she left the kingdom. Through chance, she found a book of spells that made her a witch. She wreaked mischief and havoc for the flowers, but in the end, realised that friendship could not be forced. She made amends, and was finally accepted by the flowers as their friend and protector.

Forewords

Music is, first and foremost, an art. A multi-dimensional art that is shaded by tonal colors. Music is how a picture sounds like.

This book showcases the works of ten young composers, chosen winners of the composition project inspired by Jasmine Ng’s beautiful art impressions featured in Classic Musical Moments Grade 5. This project is aimed at encouraging compositional creativity by creating a connection between pictures and music.

The winners are chosen for their ability in expressing their insightful looks at the pictures of their choice, and channeling it through their music to create a picture/music connection.

The results are beyond our expectations. These young musicians bring fresh ideas. They experimented with their favored musical genres, used interesting harmonies with commendable melodic lines and arrangements. In short, they brought in their own brand of music, branched out from Jasmine’s pictures, and created their own musical pictures & stories in the process. It is our hope that you will enjoy playing their youthful, exuberant and creative works as much as we do.

I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who has participated in this composition project. The willingness to try makes you all winners. I encourage you to keep composing and experimenting. Don’t be afraid to try to think out of the box.

Music and art have always been my passion and a part of my life. I carried my love for art in university through studying and creating moving images, and graduated in Film and Animation. Being involved in post-production and visual effects in advertising and broadcasting has given me a deeper understanding of creating and bringing the best out of images through composition and details. It has also given me an understanding of the importance of music soundtrack in a film or animation.

I was delighted when Helen approached me to illustrate her book, Classic Musical Moments Grade 5, based on my impressions of the five classical songs. It was a wonderful opportunity to combine both my love for art and music into a single creation. While Helen worked on the music, I did my best to collaborate with images. She was a great motivator throughout the process, and I really enjoyed working on all the 5 pieces of art.

Later, when she told me the pictures were going to be part of a composition project, I felt truly honoured and overwhelmed. It was an emotional moment for me to see and listen to the amazing pieces composed by the participants. They remind me once again of the power and beauty of music and art. These young composers have expressed their emotions into amazing tunes, and they have inspired me all over again to indulge myself more into my art and music.

I cannot wait to share their works with everyone, and I hope you will find their compositions as inspiring as I have.

To young MY composers:

I am very honored and very proud to have the opportunity to listen to some very impressive and beautiful compositions.

It is evident that you have approached your composition with confidence. The rhythmic and melodic interests have been properly considered. You have ventured to use interesting musical ideas.

A composition is NEVER right or wrong. You, as a composer, knows well of your intention. Go for it. Your teacher is the best person to guide you.

Some tips to further enhance your composition. You have decided on the character of your composition. This was well-portrayed in line with the title. You have built the basic structure. Hence from now conjure up an interesting development. Explore further on bass line, inner harmonic lines, some decorative chords or melody – the list is endless. Some contrasting movements and moods can add color to the overall composition too. It is a good idea to create a ‘lift’ (for example, to go to a higher range at some point), and do not forget to aim for a well-judged point of climax and relaxation. Most importantly, you must listen critically to improve on your sound and composition.

A new look at the inspiration behind a composition.

For many years I have been talking to students, teachers and many others about the future of musical composition. I have always been influenced by artworks, sculptures, and natural environment to inspire the way I compose my pieces. This is certainly one of the most stimulating ways of composition.

When you listen to an artist playing an amazing piece of music, what are you looking at whilst they are performing? The way he or she is sitting? How they are using the pedal? Their facial expressions? Or are you just listening?

I suspect if you are honest you will probably say that your mind wanders around and your eyes are searching for a landing spot! However, if you have a visual simultaneous image to study at the same time as the performance, your imagination is likely to take over. It is similar to a film score.

The compositions you have all produced have told a story through a visual image, this is what you need to think about when composing. It will really help your musical imagination. Your pieces are vibrant and tells a story, so really excellent work.

I look forward to hearing further compositions from you all. Well done to all of you.

Music is a multi-dimensional art. Music is how a painting sounds like. Instead of colours and canvas, music is shaped on elements such as melodic lines, rhythmic patterns, tonal colours and dynamics to name a few. For the musician, in order to bring music to a higher level, technical work is not the only important factor. The pianist must be aware of the touch and sound. He/she needs to understand the music itself. This is where musical awareness comes in.

This book is a collection of five keroncong songs, arranged for pianists from late intermediate level to advanced level. I have added some performers' notes at the side, and posed questions with the intention of guiding pianists towards enhancing their musical awareness, and to make a practical/aural connection. I would like to encourage the pianist to see each song as a work of art.

These songs are not arranged in the traditional style. I introduced some light jazz and lounge-style elements to these traditional songs to make it more multi-faceted, and to show pianists that they can be adventurous when it comes to music. Like many contemporary paintings, 'mix and match' works wonders. Just reach out with your senses and experiment.

Forewords

This book is a compilation of simplified baba nyonya keroncong songs, traditionally played with a ukulele-like instrument that is also called keroncong. It is my intention to bring part of the unique Peranakan heritage to the next generation, with the hope that the younger ones will learn to love these timeless songs, while others of my generation will enjoy playing these evergreen tunes with a nostalgia smile.

I have added some performer’s guidelines and simple questions at the side, not only with the intention of helping the pianist realise the importance of looking, listening and visualising when playing a song, but also to help the pianist make a theory-practical connection. These arrangements can also serve as a simple reference guide to the more advanced students on ways to insert decorative notes/ornaments, and accompaniments based on more traditional styles to their own compositions.

As music comes with multiple aspects of interpretation, I purposely left the tempo markings, performers’ directions and phrasings to the pianists’ discretion. I hope you will enjoy exploring these songs and once again, fill the atmosphere with keroncong melodies that are sung atop the Dondang Sayang float on Chap Goh Meh. A heritage that is uniquely Penang.

Biography of Authors:
MAYYA MUSAEVA has a Masters of Violin Performance (Violin) from Uzbekistan State Conservatory and a Bachelor of Performance (Violin) from Tashkent State College of Music. After 20 years of serving at Uzbekistan Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra and Malaysian National Symphony Orchestra as a Concertmaster, she decided to focus on education. During her career as an orchestra leader she performed with soloists such as Richard Clayderman, ensemble El Divo, Russell Watson, Vanessa Mae and others. Mayya is currently a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Perak, Malaysia. Her research interests include violin education and music performance.

CLARE SUET CHING CHAN has PhD in Music (Ethnomusicology) from the University of Hawai`i at Manoa (2010); Master of Arts (Ethnomusicology) (2002) and Bachelor of Arts (Music) (1998) at Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang. Clare holds a Performance Certificate in piano (1991) under the Trinity College London. She studied violin with Lo Mei Yoke and performed with the Penang State Symphony Orchestra between the years 1996-2000. Clare was the Deputy Dean of Research and Graduate Studies (2011-2017) at the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts in Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Tanjong Malim, Perak, Malaysia. She is now an associate professor and the Chief Editor of the Malaysian Music Journal.

CHRISTINE AUGUSTINE has a Doctor of Education (EdD), a Masters in Performing Arts (Music Education) and a Bachelor’s degree in Education (Music). She also holds a Licentiate Trinity College London (LTCL) and Associate Trinity College London (ATCL) certificate in piano performance. Christine Augustine is currently a senior lecturer at the Music and Music Education Department, Faculty of Music and Performing Arts, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Perak, Malaysia. She is a music educator who previously taught music in a private music school for five years. Christine’s research interests include music education, instructional leadership, music in preschool as well as music and literacy. She was formerly a church musician and also a violinist/violist in the Malacca Youth Orchestra.

Description: 'The PROUD little note' is an excellent storybook/gift for children who learn music. This story, written by Helen Yeo, and illustrated by Jacqueline Ng, comes with the intention of bringing awareness to them that music is much much more than just individual notes, or simply by just stringing together CDEFG. Music brings pictures to life with various tones and shadings. Music can be made to sound like a bird chirping, or a frog croaking. And in music, like real life, being able to set aside individual pride and to work together with others as a team brings satisfying results.

The gist of the story is as such: Proud G was a proud little G note, who thought he was a cut above other music notes. He left his home on the music sheet to seek affirmation that he was indeed the best-sounding note among other notes on the stave. Through his adventures, he began to learn the value of team work and cooperation. His final realization came after a particularly moving orchestral performance in which he finally understood the versatility of music, and prompted him to return to his customary role, as the G note on a music sheet. He learned to put pride aside and worked together with the others.
