XAMPP

This particular method of localhost installation using XAMPP will work for WordPress, WordPress MU, BuddyPress and bbPress. Installing a localhost version of WordPress will enable you to create a local hosting environment on your PC or USB storage device so that you can test your installation before going live. This process creates an offline live version of your WordPress blog. If you use the USB installation this also enables you to take that USB storage device to your client and perform a demonstration of the blog before it goes live. This will save you and your client a tremendous amount time and effort.

I saw a great live presentation of this process at the WordCamp Dallas 2009 given by SpamBoy. I have included a copy of his video and his PowerPoint presentation for your convenience.

Let’s dive in to our installation of WordPress in Windows localhost using XAMPP:

1. Install XAMPP www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.html

• Unzip file
• Follow the easy instructions at www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.html
• Either install on USB or on hard drive (not both for the same PC)
• Start the XAMPP control panel

2. Download and install WordPress or WordPress MU into the htdocs (which behaves like the public-html folder) www.wordpress.org or www.mu.wordpress.org

• Here is a great tutorial for WordPress MU XAMPP installation www.maketecheasier.com/install-wordpress-mu-in-windows-localhost-with-xampp/2009/05/02
• For WordPress MU use sub-directories for easier installation (I couldn’t get the sub-domains to work)
• You will need to make an adjustment to your PC for WordPress MU:
  • For WordPress MU localhost.localdomain: go to C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
  • Add 127.0.0.7 (tab) localhost.localdomain
  • Place a “#” in front of the action to temporarily disable it
• Edit wp-config-sample.php file

3. Import posts from live blog – Tools/export and import
4. Change permalink structure and match live blog
5. Copy and download  wp-content folders from live blog, themes, plugins, uploads
6. Reactivate plugins – except ping/post, Google, Akismet
7. Remove default installed items – post links, categories, plugins
8. Scrub links in wp_posts table:

UPDATE wp_posts
SET post-content =,
Replace(post_content, ‘www.yourdomain.com‘, ‘localhost/wordpress”);

UPDATE wp_posts
SET post_content  =,
Replace(post_content, “yourdomain.com’, ‘localhost/wordpress’);

*make sure to change your wording in the localhost and the wordpress file name to match your wording used

9. To copy the database from your blog:

• Create new database user
• Copy custom .htaccess settings
• Copy database from live blog
  • Export/import using phpMyAdmin
  • Scrub links in wp_posts table (see previous step)
  • Scrub options in wp_options table:

UPDATE  wp_options
SET          option_value = ‘http://localhost/‘
WHERE   option_name = ’siteurl’ ;

UPDATE  wp_options
SET          option_value = Concat(option_value, ‘ LOCAL’)
WHERE   option_name = ‘blogname’ ;

UPDATE  wp_options
SET          option_value = 0
WHERE   option_name = ‘blog_public’ ;

I had header errors whenever I tried to save anything in the locahost environment. Try these two great articles and see if they help remove your errors. The first one was a fix for me.

1. You will need to know your blog’s RSS feed address. In WordPress this is usually http://www.yourblogurl.com/feed, you might also be using Feedburner or another type of blogging platform.  **tip: If you are using the Firefox browser you might also notice the RSS logo to the far right of your address bar notifying you of an available RSS feed on your blog page. In Internet Explorer you should see an RSS symbol to the far right of the domain tabs navigation with a drop down of the available feeds on your blog page.
2. Navigate to your Facebook Notes at: www.facebook.com/notes.php and install to your Facebook account if you have not already done this.
3. On the right hand side of your Facebook Notes page you will see a NOTES SETTINGS box. Click on  IMPORT A BLOG

4. You will add your blog’s RSS feed right where it says WEB URL. At this time time you can only add one RSS feed to your Facebook Notes so choose which RSS feed you want to use carefully (although there are other ways to have your feeds post to Facebook).

5. Check the box if you have the right to reproduce this content on the Facebook site.
6. Click on START IMPORTING.

Now just sit back and enjoy watching Facebook populate your Notes with your blog articles. One of the huge perks is that all of these notes will also show up in your friends feeds too. You will be gaining a huge audience in just the click of a few buttons. And. it is just that easy to add your blog to Facebook Notes.

Would you like to get Daily Quotes for your Microsoft Outlook?

Like many of you I have switched from a paper planner to a digital planner. My phone syncs with Microsoft Outlook. My iPod Touch syncs with Microsoft Outlook. My PDA syncs with Microsoft Outlook. My PC displays Microsoft Outlook. My Google Calendar syncs with Microsoft Outlook. I digress. The one thing I really miss is the great quotes that were on my paper calendar. Daily I was greeted with some wonderfully movtivating quote. I miss those.

I could gather all the quotes, create a database, check the database, map the database with Microsoft Outlook…but just talking about is making my head spin!

What I did find was a cheap great application that did all that for me! This was originally created to sync with a Palm device but the reality is the database stores in Microsoft Outlook or Palm Desktop and is a great asset for desktop users too.

With this cheap, easy to install Daily Wisdom 2009 from Aurora Software will deliver a quotation every day from January 1 to December 31! All you have to do is import the data file into Outlook or Palm Desktop programs on your PC and then you are ready to go.

Jamie and Jackie are young. They want to get married. They want a big-ish wedding. They have had hard times and are financially unable to afford the wedding of their dreams. They have a really moving and sweet love story. You can visit their website and read their entire story at www.thepoorbride.com.

• The need…supplies, services and cash for a wedding. A honeymoon.
• The method…create a website, radio spots and news reports that will generate the fulfillment of the needs.

You have to give credit to Jackie for the ingenuity of building a website with their plea for help. Very creative. The website is not really all that impressive but how many people actually follow through with what they perceive is a brilliant idea. You simply must give Jackie credit for coming up with such an intelligent plan to meet their wedding needs.

I don’t know why people here in Texas are so upset over their website. In the north it is common practice to hold a pre-wedding raffle. My sister-in-law (who is a Yankee converted to Texan by marriage) told me that up north they will buy some big ticket item like a big screen TV and sell raffle tickets for the chance to win it. Then the proceeds from the raffle help to fund the wedding and the honeymoon.

Here’s where I disagree with Jamie and Jackie’s plea. What is the point of such a big wedding when:

1. You already have a kid out of wedlock with somebody else and
2. You have already been living together for quite some time.

This all seems to put a bad taste in my mouth for generosity and sacrificing on my part. I know…we all make mistakes…ya-da, ya-da, ya-da

I would rather donate to a couple who has saved themselves for each other (that means they didn’t sample the “goodies” before they married). Whose love story was a struggle to uphold the virtues taught them by their parents, grandparents and church. I did notice they pulled the “God” card on their website but also noticed they don’t mention attending any church. If they are attending church why is their church not supporting them? Are they getting married in a church?

I have been married for over 22 years. We waited to have children until after we were married. We had a small ceremony paid for by us and our parents. I saved money by making all the decorations myself, designing and creating all the floral arrangements, carefully selecting the printer for the invitations (nowadays, you could print these yourself with a PC and a printer), we bought matching bridesmaid dresses on sale from a local store and we drove to our honeymoon location. I also wore my mother’s wedding dress (from my parents wedding over 43 years ago). It was awesome!

I’m just sayin’…

Whether or not I feel inclined to support their wedding adventure I wish Jackie and Jamie the best of luck. Marriage is hard enough with  a clean, smooth start much less with few snags before you get it going. I would encourage the couple to invest in their life together with some pre-marriage and then marriage counseling. If they are attending a church this would be something that a pastor or an associate pastor could do for them. I pray that Jamie and Jackie have a blessed wedding day and a long happy life together.

Fences is for Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. You can get this as a freeware from www.download.com if you want to test it on your PC. Fences creates flexible little boxes on your desktop that help organize your shortcuts. Once organized you can then quickly navigate in and out of the “fences.”

The drag and drop feature makes it a snap to get your desktop in order. Just create a fence and then drag icons into the fence. What! You want it over in that fence? No worries. Just drag and drop it out of there. You can also make all the fences disappear by double clicking on the desktop. Exclude a fence from your list and it will always show on your desktop even when you double click.

Want your fences to match your pretty pink water lily photo you just set as your wallpaper. No problem. Adjust the color settings to suit your taste.

Is all this just too much hassle? Just choose some of the predefined sets and layouts and put your mind at ease. It’s just that simple.

This is not makes your desktop look a little more stylish but also enhances your workspace with a touch of practicality. This is one of the smaller enhancement apps I have used as it comes in at just under 9MB. Check out this video for a brief view of its features and function.

For all the wonderful innovation that Microsoft provides, I think that printing an Outlook calendar is one of the most uninspiring activities I do on any given day…until now. Why this does not come pre-installed with Outlook I do not know. It just makes your calendar more attractive, appealing, fun, inspiring…I could go on and on. The Calendar Printing Assistant for Outlook 2007 is an awesome addition to your Microsoft Office suite. How I love thee, let me count the ways:

1. Additional calendar template choices…that make sense (did a woman design this…LOL)
2. Advanced calendar coloring options
3. You can choose to print by day, week, month or year
4. Select from any or all of your Calendars for printing in overlay
5. Choose to include any or all of your Task lists…or not
6. Pick a font set
7. Select a color scheme or create your very own custom color scheme
8. Choose the calendar style that suits you the best (basic, classic, modern, rounded, etc.)
9. Pick your Page Setup ( I have one calendar in letter and one in 1/2 Letter)
10. Create tabs of customization for each type of calendar you prefer
11. When you are finished your calendar looks like a professional calendar you purchased

This is what my calendar looks like when printed with the basic Microsoft Outlook print settings. Rather uninspiring.

At the time I printed these I had completed all my tasks otherwise there would be tasks in that section. The notes section is blank so I have a place to jot down whatever I need to for that day.

• Day Template – Long Day 02 Letter
• Colors – Opulent
• Fonts – Georgia
• Calendar Style – Modern
• Page Setup – Letter Portrait
• Calendars and Tasks – Primary .pst calendar, Primary Tasks List and US Holidays

I can already hear some of your minds thinking “in this day and age of pda’s, smart phones and syncing why is she still printing her calendar?” I am a tactile person. I like to touch paper, highlight stuff, crumple, doodle and I jot down tons of little notes to myself all day long. Rather than having a jotter or a huge desk calendar I just print out one calendar page per day. This way I can take notes until my hearts content, everything is neat and orderly, put them in my Franklin Covey binder and refer back to them when needed. Hey, it’s my system…don’t pick on me

As I was meandering through the various plants checking to see how everyone was doing I came across this one plant. Something just didn’t seem quite right.

The dirt was a little disheveled.  The plant was kind of…well, messy. There was a little dirt on the shelving. I thought to myself: Could I have been so messy yesterday. So I decided to take a closer look. Can you see what I see?

You can just barely see it in the upper left of the pot. What? Can’t make it out yet? I just couldn’t resist(maybe I should have since I had found 5 snake skins and 2 baby rat snakes on the porch yesterday). Okay, I’m sure you’ll be able to see it in this picture(even though he is wearing a brilliant disguise).

I wondered where my little toad has been. He has been hiding in disguise. I guess this potted plant has become his toad house. I usually have several toads on my back porch because there is moist soil, a decorative water fountain, many potted plants and it is a safe place from the dogs just outside the door. However, he does enjoy a good stroll in the evening outside the door under the porch lights catching bugs in the dark of night.

I enjoy the toads back here because their sound is just lovely. They also keep the bug population on the porch to a minimum(even though it is screened in you still get a couple of bugs making their way under the door or through the screening). They also just seem to add to the eco system that thrives back here.

In this little eco system I have bugs, geckos, toads, frogs, mud daubers-sometimes, spiders, snakes-I try and not have these back here , hummingbirds and me! It is a wonderful place for me to feel natural. I just love my back porch.
