Yes, I know. As soon as I commit to start blogging again, I disappear into the wilderness for a couple of months without a peep. I do have a very good excuse though. I’ve been busy with a really exciting client project which went live last week (more about that later) as well as a couple of other side projects which have been eating up my time. Mainly the re-design and re-development of Hunt for Property.ie and Wall Estates.ie. They’re still a long way from completion but they’re going to be a monumental improvement on what’s there at the moment; the existing sites are really starting to fall apart at the seams!

Anyway, things have quietened down a little now so I’ll try my best to post more often.

With less than 48 hours to go before Ireland’s 6 Nations clash with Wales in Cardiff, the men in green are once again on the cusp of ending a prolonged Grand Slam and 6 Nations championship-winning dry spell. Considering that most monkeys have a life span of between 10 and 20 years, one would think that the monkey on the back of Irish rugby should have died of natural causes by now.

A smarting yet talented Welsh team may well be too much of an ask for Ireland come Saturday. Considering the quality of the Irish defence this far though, it looks like the championship is in the bag; Wales needing to win by at least 13 points to deny Ireland the tournament. Having said this, anything other than a win and a Grand Slam should be unthinkable in the Irish camp at the moment. They need to go out there and play to win. Collecting the Championship Trophy on the back of a defeat would be too much of an anti-climax.

I made a €200 bet with a Welsh friend that Ireland would win a Grand Slam within the next three years. We made the bet last year, a few months after Kidney had been appointed coach of the national team. I was convinced that Kidney’s calm and balanced approach would breathe a new lease of life into the squad. Of course, my friend being Welsh, laughed himself silly at the suggestion and was more than happy to take the bet. I’d love to lighten his wallet of that money this Saturday rather than having to wait another two seasons to see what happens.

When it comes to cooking Web apps for people, the two most important ingredients are simplicity and usefulness. Twecipe, the brainchild of Irish Chef Niall Harbison and developed by the team at Contrast, is as simple an app as you’ll find. If, like me, you cook a lot and the contents of your fridge could be described as “random junk” at the best of times then you’ll also find that Twecipe is incredibly useful.

Here’s how it works. You simply type in some available ingredients and Twecipe will come back to you with a recommended recipe. Or, if you’re on Twitter, simply tweet your list of ingredients directly to @twecipe. For example, tweet “@twecipe eggs, ham, muffins” and you’ll get the full recipe for Eggs Benedict sent right back to you!

A delicious Web app, I think you’ll agree.

After a 15 month hiatus, I’ve decided to return to the world of blogging. Why? Well for a start, I have a bit more time on my hands these days. I had a very enjoyable yet extremely busy year in 2008 and simply didn’t have enough time to contribute to this blog to justify keeping it on-line.

Aside from client work, personal projects also took up a huge amount of my time and energy. I’ve also been working hard setting up Magenta Three, a new Web design and development company which will be making its official launch at the end of April.

The latest iteration of The Menace will contain the usual digest of general ramblings as well as Web industry news. This time around though, I intend to avoid anything too geeky. This is a blog, so a certain level of geekiness is assumed of course, but I’ll be steering clear of any in-depth Web design or development topics.

Anyway, it’s good to be back and I hope you’ll drop by and leave a comment from time to time!
