Ramblings:

Sorry this one was late, but my trusty iBook died a few weeks back, and that delayed everything by a couple weeks. First I had find out was wrong with the iBook, then I had to get a new MacBook Pro, and then I had to transfer all my old files over. Plus, I had to get used to the new version of GarageBand (which I like a lot, save for a few small things).

Long story short, I’m back in business, but of course my laptop would die right as I’m about to finish this podcast.

Speaking of finishing podcasts, my other podcast, Ginger and the Geek, will have its last episode this coming Tuesday. After three years of having two podcasts, I will not have any. I’m sure it will feel kind of strange. But, I will not be totally podcast-less. Lost Highway’s B-movie Reviews and Cult Films (I write film reviews there) just started a podcast, and I am helping out with that. I am always happy to talk about movies.

If you are looking for something to fill the Magic of Eyri void in your life then start reading my comic strip and humor blog, Clattertron.

The final episode will run in September. Can’t believe it is finally over!

I’m thinking I will take December off again, like I did last year. It usually ends up being a crazy month, due to Christmas and other such things going on all the time (and it’ll help me add to my episode buffer). And, these breaks help new listeners catch up.

And here we meet another of my bizarre creations, the Roc Lobster. It is part Roc and, obviously, part Lobster.

Contrary to popular belief, this beast was not intended as a reference to the B-52’s song, “Rock Lobster” — I just started coming up with creature names that were puns, and there is such a thing as a Rock Lobster. Also, its name is part of a series of jokes/plot points that come into play later in the story.

But, I did remember the song right after coming up with the name, so I figured, what the heck.

Ah, Queen Lana the Iv. Know what that spells if you rearrange the letters? Leviathan. Without “Queen,” obviously. That was on purpose. I needed a name and I began doing what I tend to do when I need names: making anagrams and swapping letters around. I’ve been asked if the City Beneath the Sea was inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s work, such as the sunken city of R’lyeh. The answer is no, it wasn’t. I was more inspired by the likes of Atlantis and such. I was only casually aware of Lovecraft’s work while writing Magic of Eyri, but in recent years I’ve become a big fan. I’m even on panels about his work at conventions, and I recently wrote a guest blog about Cthulhu in Pop Culture for the Elder Signs Press Blog.

Sorry that this episode was kind of short, but I wanted to introduce the Queen in the next episode, and this was the best spot for a cut off.

I remembered when I originally wrote this part of the book, I knew I wanted the characters to go underwater, but I needed a way for them to breath while doing so. I came up with the lungfish that are introduced in this episode.

This is one of the reasons I like writing fantasy: I can create creatures to solve problems like how the heck my characters breath underwater.

Magic of Eyri has been nominated for two Parsec Awards!

Best New Speculative Fiction Podcaster/Team
Best Speculative Fiction Comedy/Parody Podcast

The Parsec Awards are,

“Dedicated to rewarding excellence in various aspects of Speculative Fiction Podcasting.”

This is a great honor, but–I have to wait and hear if I’m a finalist. That should be next month. I had to turn in a sample containing three segments I thought best showcased the areas I was nominated in. Those segments could only come from the first season (my first year of eligibility).

Winners are picked from the finalists, and the awards are given out at Dragon*Con in September. Winners don’t have to be present to win, and I don’t think they let the winners know ahead of time, so if (if) I were a finalist, I would have to head down there and hope for the best (and I probably would, if I could swing it financially/time off wise).

But even being a finalist would be amazing!

July Break!

There will not be any episodes released during July because I am moving and it could be awhile before I get settled and have Internet again. I decided to play it safe and also to give myself a break. I earned it. After this week’s episode, the next episode will be available August 4th.

Ramblings:

We get to know Alexander the Small a bit better in this episode. He is, of course, named after Alexander the Great, and a friend of mine named Alex (who wasn’t small, but very skinny). His crew, Julius the albatross and Hector the Penguin are named after Julius Caesar and Hector of Troy. I was partially inspired by an article I read once about the Nine Worthies.

With the audio versions of Julius and Hector, decided to try and do a “Bones and Spock” approach to the voices. We’ll see how it goes.

The joke behind the Pixie People surrounding Uncle Shameless and saying “Hi!” over and over, is a poke at Navi in the video game Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

This is audio from another panel discussion at Penguicon 2010 I was a part of, called “Humor in Science Fiction and Fantasy.”

Joining me on the panel are Jim C. Hines, author of the Goblin Quest and Princess series and Brian Briggs, creator of the geek humor site BBspot.com.

I loved being on this panel. It was a hoot. We talked about writing humor in genres vs. traditional fiction, and even in non-fiction. Jim teases me for taking food home from the laundromat. And we learn that Batman makes anything funnier.

Jim was also a guest on an episode for the other podcast I’m a part of, LansingNext. I am the co-host, and bring my lovable geek humor to the show.

Oh and last week’s podcast made it to the front page of BoingBong last week. Awesome!

Adapting a Novel to a Podcast (with Mary Robinette Kowal)

This is audio from a panel discussion at Penguicon 2010 I was a part of, called “Adapting Your Novel to a Podcast.” Joining me on the panel is author, puppeteer and voice actor Mary Robinette Kowal. I recorded this live with my portable recorder placed between us, and I did what I could in GarageBand to boost the audio (and even out the levels), but a heads up that it is not as loud as I would of liked.

I really enjoyed this panel and Mary is just awesome. We approach podcasting from two different angles, with her being on the very professional end of things, and me coming from the low-tech, amateur end, but I think that made the talk way more fun.

Slight Schedule Change

OK kids, I decided that I will push episode 024 back until 05.19 and for this Weds. and next, I will run audio from a couple of panels I was on at Penguicon over the weekend.

Here’s what the schedule will be for the next three weeks (starting this Weds.)

05.05.10 – “Adapting Your Novel to a Podcast” with Mary Robinette Kowal. Run time: around 55 minutes
05.12.10 – “Humor in Science Fiction and Fantasy” with Jim C. Hines and Brian Briggs. Run time: around 50 minutes.

Magic of Eyri 023-An Odd Duck

Today’s episode: Our Heroes are taken by Mudd the duck to meet his cousin, Alexander the Small, captain of the ship The Griffin. Mudd claims Alexander will take the party to Dragons Well, but upon meeting the short captain, Steve and the others realize there is something not quite right about him. For starters, he wears an iron pot on his head.

Ramblings:

This episode, like the last one, features a tip of the hat to the “Everyone? Everyone!” scene in the film The Professional. We are introduced to one of my favorite characters, Alexander the Small (who’s name is an obvious play on Alexander the Great). Despite being small in height, Alexander is a larger than life character, and was always fun to write.

A bit of trivia, the name of the ship, The Griffin, comes from something I read once about a ship named The Griffin being one of the first “ghost ships” on the Great Lakes. Sadly, I haven’t been able to find that website/article since I wrote the novel, but that’s fine. The ship is not named after Family Guy.

Twitter Changes

I decided to shake up a few things in the Twitter realm. Not with my personal account, but with the one I had been using for the Magic of Eyri Podcast.

Originally, many months ago, I had created the account to be a ‘character’ Twitter page for the main character Steve. But, while it was fun at first to tweet “in character,” I quickly lost track of it because I had to remember too much (I was trying to stay in tune with where the podcast was).

After I began sharing Twitter/Facebook duties for LansingNext, I saw I could use my Magic of Eyri account in many more useful ways. I change the name to @MoEpodcast (short for “Magic of Eyri Podcast”), so it would be easier to remember.

My goal is to kind of keep that account and my personal account somewhat separate, although I’ll tweet about MoE stuff on my personal one. It shall be a fun experiment.

I also inspired by what some of my friends have said on Twitter about not following people who don’t follow others, and not liking “one-sided” accounts, which my character account certainly was. One friend put it brilliantly as “I’m here for conversations, not broadcasts.”

And since I don’t have to worry about continuity and plot, I can have more fun with the @MoEpodcast account.

I’m changing the badge in the sidebar to the new account as well and I won’t really be picky about who I follow, like I am with my main account.

Tentative Penguicon 2010 Panel Schedule

I have the pleasure of being a guest panelist at this year’s Penguicon convention for the third time in a row. Hard to believe it has been that many times already. Penguicon is a computer/software/sci-fi and fantasy fan convention at a hotel in metro Detroit. It draws a rather large crowd each year (and keeps growing).

Here’s a tentative run down of the panels I’ll be on, as like any convention, my schedule is subject to change. Penguicon is Apr. 30th thru May 2nd.

We Made It to the Oscars!
2009 had an unprecedented number of sci-fi films nominated for Academy Awards. Does this mean sci-fi is going mainstream?

Saturday 11AM

I’m looking forward to this one and it looks like I’m the moderator. It should be a fun chat and hopefully all in good fun. I like that they are listing moderators ahead of time. Since I’m modding this one, I had better come up with some questions or notes ahead of time.

Science Fiction is about Serious Things. Fantasy is about Causes and Quests. Wait, you mean they can be funny too? Puns, jokes, and running gags abound on this panel that pokes fun at works that take themselves a tad too seriously.

Adapting a Novel to a Podcast

I like that I’m described as a veteran of aural performance. That made my day right there. But, I guess with over 20 podcast episodes under my belt, that is an honest description. Heck, how many dozens of character voices have I done? Too many. But I love it. I was on a few panels with Mary last year and I’m looking forward to chatting with her again.

I’m only on four panels this time around (unless something changes) but that’s fine by me. I tend to over do it at some conventions and it’ll be nice to have time to relax (and I don’t have to worry about rushing down there on Friday either). Plus, I’ll have a girlfriend in tow and it wouldn’t be much fun for her if I was on panels all day and night.

I’ve scaled way back on how I do conventions vs. one and especially two years ago. I’m not even bringing any books this time. It is just isn’t cost effective any more and I feel I’m better off burning a bunch of podcast CDs and giving those out. I typically get a few online sales after any convention I’m a guest at, so I’m hoping that trend continues. I’ll confess that I’m always a bit nervous about being on panels with well-known writers and I kind of feel out of place at times, but typically everyone is very friendly and my worries are for not.

I really enjoy conventions. They are a great recharge to the creative batteries and I get to meet folks who have bought my book and/or listen to the podcast in person. Nothing in the world tops a stranger stopping you in a hotel lobby and saying how much they loved your book. Nothing.

Magic of Eyri 022-Duck and Cover

Today’s episode: Our Heroes arrive in Tal, the duck port town. Once at Tal, they run into an old friend–Mudd the duck. Mudd takes the party to the Lighthouse Inn, a large lighthouse located in Tal’s bay that doubles as an Inn. Back at the Hawk King’s castle, Fiach-Ra learns of a way he can bypass the blue heron amulet protecting Steve, thanks to Rarlup, the Elder Mystic of Zuu. Fiach-Ra gives his second-in-command, U’nala, a chariot pulled by two flying Pyrix to aid in his search for The Boy. The Hawk King also makes U’nala take the bumbling gate guards, Remmit and Kaz, with him.

In our last episode: Istrio scolds Steve and tells the boy that his not doing as he was told led to the destruction of Uth, the Last Human Village (since renamed to The Village Formally Known as Uth, the Last Human Village). The blue heron mystic tells Steve he must find passage to Dragons Well and Istrio gives Zeroth a talking silver swordfish named Gladius.

The other joke is the “Everyone?” “EVERYONE!” exchange between U’nala and Fiach-Ra, which references a similar scene in the film The Professional.

Istrio is back, and boy does he have some harsh words for Steve.

This episode introduces one of my favorite characters–Gladius, the cranky talking silver swordfish. Gladius was a favorite of mine to write for when I wrote the original novel. There are a few hidden jokes in this episode, but the main one is Uncle Shameless’ line about Steve having a “butch name like Theodore or Gordon.” That refers to former Detroit Red Wings players, Ted Lindsay and Gordie Howe. Steve is of course named for another former Red Wing, Steve Yzerman. The joke about Steve’s mother wanting to name him Françoise is a bit of family trivia–that nearly happened to my dad.

Next Time on The Magic of Eyri (03.17.10): “Silver Tongued” – Steve and his friends meet a cranky, talking weapon with abandonment issues.

Ramblings:

Because of the way the weeks run in March, I should technically do three episodes for this month. Well, I ain’t gonna. I want to stick to the “first and third” Wednesday release schedule, so there will not be an episode on March 31st, but rather April 7th.

This episode introduces the fiery minions of the Hawk King, the Pyrix. They are giant, skeletal birds covered in fire. Scary.

I came up with the name by combining “pyr” (Greek for fire) and “strix” – a bird creature from Roman mythology (although in the original myth, the strix are vampires). The strix are said to be like owls, but I envision the Pyrix to have a skeleton similar to an eagle or a hawk.

After consulting a vulture mystic, the Hawk King determines that Steve’s next stop must be a visit to the Oracle of Uth, the Last Human Village. Steve does indeed meet with the Oracle, Geo, and learns of the next part of his quest–find a way to Dragons Well and search for the Sword of Zaa.

Ramblings:

This is the first episode to feature some of my original “music.” I say “music” because it is more or less me hitting random keys on a synth keyboard until I found something that sounded neat. I also recorded some guitar parts (but not everything you hear in this episode is my doing) and ran them through “amps” in GarageBand. I had fun coming up with music and I’ll try to do it in the future, because some times you just want a crunchy power chord for a scene.

Today’s episode also features some great guest voice work by the mysterious Valeta. She is very talented and I’m happy to have her on board the podcast and look forward to having her voice more characters in upcoming episodes.

I’m happy to announce that Lansing, Michigan singer/songwriter Ryan Knott recoded a line of dialogue for this episode. His line, “that’s not a troll–that’s my wife!” was one of my favorite (stupid) lines in this episode.

And in other good news, I’ll have another guest voice for episode 019. I like that I’m finally asking local folks to record a few lines here and there–but let us not forget to thank Robin Hudson (Eira) for all of her continuing hard work and excellent voice acting–especially since she’s all the way in South Korea! Today’s episode: Our heroes continue on toward Uth, the Last Human Village. Along the way, Zeroth gives Uncle Shameless and Steve magical armor for protection. In need of weapons, Zeroth has Eira catch some swordfish in the swamp–they are fish with sword-blades for tongues. Zeroth tries to teach Steve how to fight, but quickly learns he has his work cut out for him.

In our last episode: Uncle Shameless and Zeroth battled the raven twins and Arbal the mourning dove. Afterward, Zeroth carries the rest of the party to safety by stashing them in his magical pack.

Next Time on The Magic of Eyri (02.03.10): “Uth, the Last Human Village” Our heroes finally arrive at Uth, the Last Human Village but they soon find out that entering the village will not be so easy.

Ramblings: I had some fun with the audio mixing in this episode. It certainly shows I’ve been listening to a lot of Pink Floyd lately, what with some of the crazy layering I have going on when Steve is “remembering” events in his past.

The audio of Steve’s dad’s “voice” was fun to do–I originally had thoughts of asking my own dad to record the parts, but I opted to do them myself. That way, if I decide to do something like this again, I won’t have to keep bothering my dad.

I don’t know, but for some reason Steve’s dad sounds like Tom Waits. I really don’t know why I did the voice that way, I guess I was inspired (and I’m by no means saying it is a good impression).

One of the lines I say (which came about while improvising), “above a dirty book store” is right out of a Tom Waits song. Another line I came up with on the fly, “I certainly was correct” is a reference to Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon album (the line there is “I certainly was in the right”).

I figure I may as well do funny stuff like that–what’s the point of having this be in audio unless I mess around and experiment a bit?

Speaking of, I’ve started including a short “stinger” at the end of each episode, taking a page from Mystery Science Theater 3000’s playbook. The line is either a favorite line of mine from the episode, an alternate take or a goof.

Next Time on The Magic of Eyri (01.20.10): “Fishy Business” Our heroes continue on their way to Uth, the Last Human Village. Along the way, Steve gets an interesting weapon–a living creature called a swordfish.

Ramblings: For those trying to get an idea as to who Zeroth’s magical pack works, the best comparison I can think of is a TARDIS from Doctor Who: bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. The inside of Zeroth’s pack has the same space as a large room, and objects (and persons) inside do experience some disorientation while as Zeroth moves around (similar to sea-sickness). Zeroth removes items by thinking of them as he pulls his hand out. To help remember what he is carrying, Zeroth keeps a ledger book with an ongoing list of what’s inside.

Next Time on The Magic of Eyri (11.25.09): Every Which Way But Uth

Ramblings: Quite a few references in this episode. Zeroth’s randomly appearing shield (as well as his yellow scarf) are a nod to the Mega Man character, Proto Man. Zeroth’s “science defying pack” is a reference to the magical holding pack the character Snarf has in the fantastic fantasy-comedy comic strip SnarfQuest (by Larry Elmore). SnarfQuest (along with the comic Bone by Jeff Smith) is a big influence on the Magic of Eyri.

Zeroth’s line about getting the pack from someone who was “reluctant” to part with it is a tip of the hat to the film Spartan. Val Kilmer’s character has a similar line regarding a knife. A personal favorite joke in this episode is Zeroth mentioning the Hunter band, Prophet’s Profits, which I wrote as a reference to the band Herman’s Hermits. Prophet’s Profits are a Hunter band out of Eaner, a name I came up with while looking at my Beaner’s Coffee mug when I wrote the original novel. Beaner’s has since changed its name to Biggby Coffee.

Arbal’s repeating crossbow is based (loosely) on a Chinese repeating crossbow. Arbal’s name comes from arbalest, which is a large crossbow (and one of the weapons Arbal uses). Cam’s name comes from a part of a compound bow.

Schedule change-episodes on wednesdays

I decided last night that I’m going to release the next podcast episode on Wednesday (11.11.09). A friend who specializes in Internet marketing, etc. told me that the best days for Web traffic are Tuesday through Thursday. Makes sense.

I’m curious to see if releasing an episode in the middle of the week will make much of a difference in my own traffic. Considering I only release stuff every other week, this is probably a good idea–as not too many people check websites on Sundays.

This also gives me the whole weekend to finish an episode if I don’t have it done in time. Come back on Wednesday!

In writing news, I am now the Lansing Restaurant Examiner for Examiner.com. I do reviews of restaurants around town. I’m enjoying it so far. I also started doing a weekly fantasy hockey column for IllegalCurve.com.

When Steve and Uncle Shameless are tossed Cell Six in the Hawk King’s castle, that is another reference–as is the description of the what the prisoner sharing the cell with them is wearing.

I had the pleasure of being a guest writer/panelist at ConClave, a science fiction and fantasy fan convention, this weekend in Romulus, Michigan. This panel was called The Beast Within: Werewolves in Popular Culture. Joining me on the panel were Stewart Sternberg, Jon David, Rick Moore, Charles Zaglanis and William Jones. Folks from the audience chipped in as well.

The audio quality won’t be on par with my usual episodes, as I just set up my recorder on the table and let it go.

Hines (Goblin Quest, Stepsister Scheme, The Mermaid’s Madness) Phil Kline (Curse of the Kitsune) and myself talking about Fantasy Writing at the Delta Township District Library on September 1st, 2009. The sound quality will not be the same as the other episodes, as I just set my recorder on the table and let it go. I did what I could to tweak things (but you can only do so much with an .MP3 recorded at 64 kbps).

The three of us chatted about writing fantasy, our writing process and answered questions from the audience. The highpoint, for me anyway, is listening to Jim explain his upcoming muppet-werewolf short story.

Welcome back, loyal listeners.

In our last episode: Our heroes escaped the Hawk King’s castle using an old aqueduct as a make-shift water slide and ended up falling into a faraway lake. Meanwhile Nevik, the Hawken from the dungeon, informed U’nala of Steve’s arrival in the city.

Today’s episode: Steve and Uncle Shameless meet Eira the pelican (voiced by Robin Hudson of Angel Between the Lines and other podcasts). Eira is a who healer happens to be on her way to Uth, the Last Human Village–the same place Steve and Uncle Shameless are headed. Back at the Hawk King’s castle, a vulture Mystic tells U’nala of the danger Steve represents.

Ramblings: This episode is dedicated to Les Paul (1915-2009), who passed away this week. Not only am I appreciative of his contributions to guitars, but also of his pioneering of multi-track recording (and audio effects), which eventually evolved into the sound editing software we use today (in my case, GarageBand). Welcome back, loyal listeners.

In our last episode: A Hawken warrior tries to convince Steve to hand over his blue heron amulet, but the negotiations take a nasty turn and Steve receives help from Mudd the duck–the bartender of the pub where Steve and Uncle Shameless were captured.

Today’s episode: Our heroes continue their escape from the Hawk King’s castle, using an old aqueduct as a make-shift water slide. Meanwhile, we are introduced to the Hawk King’s second in command, U’nala, a one-winged Hawken who has gone crazy from decades of administrative work. Nevik, the Hawken who tried to bring Steve to the Hawk King, informs U’nala of The Boy’s arrivial in the city. U’nala doesn’t know who this The Boy person is, but he’s fairly certain it means bad news for the Hawk King–which always means more work for him.

Ramblings: This episode is a bit short, but don’t worry–some of the next few will be longer. I enjoy writing/voicing U’nala because he lets me be over the top/goofy, something I didn’t want to do with Fiach-Ra. He’s kind of the Starscream to Fiach-Ra’s Megatron.

Steve’s Twitter, Cast Updates

That’s right gang, Steve, our relucant teenage hero of the podcast, now has his own Twitter account (@steveharrier). I’ll post more than just the latest episodes there, as I plan to do tweets that go along with the store…and yes, they’ll continue even after Steve ‘arrives’ in Eyri…despite there being no cell phone service.

I see it as a fun way to expand the Magic of Eyri universe a bit. Can’t promise frequent updates, but you never know. I have my own account (@danieljhogan) that I update a few times a day however, and it appears in the side bar of the website (and my personal website).

I may do a page here with Steve’s Twitter updates.

Speaking of page updates, I updated the Cast page — and I’m pleased as punch to announce Robin Hudson (of Angel Between the Lines and other podcasts) as our newest cast member. Robin will be providing the voice of Eira the pelican, starting with Episode 010, “Are You a Pelican or a Pelican’t.”

In our last episode: Steve and Uncle Shameless were allowed into the Hawk King’s city, Da’Rahga, by a Hawken officer named Lexa. However, their tour of the City of Flame was short lived after Uncle Shameless got into a fight with several Swantan warriors in a Da’Rahga pub. Our heroes quickly found themselves in the Hawk King’s dungeon. The episode ended with a Hawken warrior from pub visiting Steve and Uncle Shameless in the dungeon.

Today’s episode: In our eighth adventure, the Hawken warrior tries to convince Steve to hand over his blue heron amulet in exchange for the Hawk King sending our heroes home with his magic. The negotiations take a nasty turn and Steve receives help from an unlikely source.

In our last episode: Steve and Uncle Shameless tried to enter Da’Rahga, the Hawk King’s city, but were deterred by a pair of gate guards–a Hawken named Remmit and a Swantan named Kaz. Uncle Shameless tried to con his way past the guards, eventually asking to speak to their supervisor–a Hawken officer named Lexa. Much to Remmit and Kaz’s surprise, Lexa granted the two humans entrance.

Today’s episode: In our seventh adventure, our heroes finally gain access to Da’Rahga. But, their luck runs out after Uncle Shameless causes a ruckus at a Da’Rahga pub.

In our last episode: Istrio, the blue heron Mystic, finishes his history of Eyri and gives Steve a quest: find the lost Sword of Zaa, the only weapon that can defeat Fiach-Ra, the Hawk King. He also tells Steve to head for Uth, the Last Human Village, but Steve and Uncle Shameless head for the Hawk King’s city, Da’Rahga, instead.

Today’s episode: In our sixth adventure, our heroes arrive at Da’Rahga, known as The City of Flame. The city gets this name from the magical Wall of Fire that protects it from would-be attackers. To make matters worse, our heroes have to manage to get past two guards, a Hawken named Remmit and a Swantan named Kaz.
