General Information on Lung Cancer

Lung cancer, or carcinoma of the lung, is one of the most common forms of cancer today. It is one of the most frequent causes of cancer-related mortality in the United States today. In the United States, another form of cancer that is becoming increasingly common is breast cancer, which is the development of malignant tissue in the breast. Breast cancer is seen mostly in women, though this does not mean that men are immune to it. A small percentage of men too contract breast cancer. The numbers are small, 1 man with breast cancer against a 100 women with it, but its there. However, there is one major difference between breast cancer and lung cancer. One can see the symptoms of breast cancer at an early stage, while in the case of lung cancer, the symptoms are not detected early, primarily because they match the symptoms of other lesser ailments. In this article, we will discuss lung cancer.

A person is said to suffer from lung cancer when a growth of malignant cancer cells is detected in the lungs. Depending on the stage at which lung cancer is detected, it can be classified as being in the:

o Early stages
o Mid-stages
o Advanced stages

Small Cell Lung Cancer

Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

Non-small cell lung cancer, or non-small lung cancer, is the more common of the two basic forms of lung cancer. Four out of five lung cancer patients suffer from this type of cancer.

Based on the cell type/area in which the carcinogenic cells proliferate in the lungs, non-small cell lung cancer is further categorized into three types. They are:

o Squamous cell carcinoma
o Adenocarcinoma
o Large Cell Carcinoma
o Bronchioalveolar Carcinoma (BAC)

Squamous Cell Carcinoma

This is the most common type of lung cancer. It occurs in the cells lining the airways inside the lungs. This form of cancer occurs mostly due to nicotine ingestion through smoking.

Adenocarcinoma

This form of cancer is seen in the mucus cells within the airways in the lung.

Large Cell Carcinoma

This is also called undifferentiated lung cancer. In large cell carcinoma, the proliferating cells are round and much larger than the cells seen in adenocarcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma.
Bronchioalveolar Carcinoma (BAC)

This form of cancer is seen in the bronchioalveolar region of the lung.

What Causes Lung Cancer?

The main cause of lung cancer is exposure to tobacco. This is primarily through smoking. About 80% of lung cancer patients are smokers. Smokers may be cigarette smokers, cigar smokers, or pipe smokers; it doesn't matter. The risk of contracting lung cancer is equal in all the three cases.

A person may inhale smoke directly. A person can also inhale smoke passively or involuntarily. This smoke is also called secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke is of two types:

o Mainstream - This is the smoke exhaled by the smoker, and amounts to more than 50% of all secondhand smoke.
o Sidestream - This is the smoke emanating from the burning end of a cigarette/cigar/pipe/hookah.

Passive smokers too stand a high chance of contracting lung cancer. The chances of passive/secondary smokers contracting lung cancer is 30% higher than people who do not inhale smoke either actively or passively.

However, there have been instances of even total non-smokers suffering from lung cancer. This indicates that smoking is not the only cause for lung cancer. It is the primary cause, yes, but not definitely the only cause. The following are some of the other causes of lung cancer:

o Air pollution
o Inhalation of asbestos fibers
o Exposure to radon, a radioactive substance formed by breaking down uranium
o Inhalation of marijuana fumes by smoking
o Exposure of the chest area to radiation therapy during cancer treatment
o Hereditary reasons
o Presence of arsenic in drinking water
o Diet with low fruit and vegetable content (this increases the risk of lung cancer in smokers)

A combination of exposure to tobacco along with any of these causes greatly increases the chances of a person contracting lung cancer.

Lung Cancer Symptoms

The following are some of the common symptoms of lung cancer. They do not usually manifest in the early stages. Even if they do, they are usually mistaken for some other ailment. These symptoms are:

o Persistent coughing
o Reddish or muddy brown spit
o Loss of breath
o Loss of appetite
o Persistent or repetitive infections of the bronchial tract
o Hoarseness of voice
o Renewed wheezing

In its later advanced stages, when the lung cancer is said to be in metastasis, the symptoms are:

o Numbness in the arms or legs
o A jaundiced appearance
o Tumorous growths near the skin surface
o Seizures
o Bone pain
o Dizziness

Lung Cancer Detection and Diagnosis

It is very rare to be able to detect lung cancer in its early stages. There are no specific symptoms of early stages of lung cancer. This is one of the reasons why lung cancer is usually detected in its later stages.

The use of a proper screening technique would greatly increase the chances of early lung cancer detection. However, there is no such proper and totally effective screening technique yet. Research is on to see if one can be formulated soon. As of now, a new technique called spiral CT seems to be the best option for early detection.

Once lung cancer is detected, the next step is to determine the stage it is in. This is done using the AJCC system. Roman numerals are used to mark the different stages of lung cancer, numerals from 0 to IV. Sometimes the stages are further divided into substages, using denotations A and B. The general rule of thumb is that the lower the denomination, the less serious the condition.

Lung Cancer Treatment

Lung cancer treatment options are usually the same as prostate cancer treatment options or colon cancer treatment options. What I mean is that all forms of cancer have the same treatment options. However, lung cancer tests may be different from colon cancer tests. The standard treatment options for lung cancer are:

o Surgery
o Radiation Therapy
o Chemotherapy

What matters is the combination of methods being used. The more serious the cancer, the more chances that different treatment options will be used in tandem, or one after the other.

What is a clinical trial?

A Clinical Trial is a research study done on humans following a very strict protocol. The goal of a clinical trial is to develop new drugs and treatments for all types of diseases, most especially fatal ones such as Mesothelioma.

In their quest for a cure, many patients turn to alternative "treatments." According to recent medical data, most of these "treatments" simply do not work, and many can cause serious harm. 1. Rattlesnake Powder Therapy

Rattlesnake treatments are based on a medically unproven claim that a powder derived from rattlesnake has the power to kill cancer. The rattlesnake powder is made by cutting off the head of the snake and drying the remaining flesh in the sun. The dehydrated snake is then ground into powder and packaged into capsules. The patient is supposed to take one capsule every hour until he or she is healed. Alarmingly, many rattlesnake healers insist that this "cure" cannot be combined with any other medication. 2. Oxidative Stress Treatments

3. Melatonin Therapy

Melatonin cancer treatments use high doses of melatonin, a hormone that is naturally produced by the body, to defeat cancer. The melatonin healers claim that, in high doses, melatonin boosts the immune system, which then destroys the cancer cells. While some healers recommend increasing the levels of melatonin through a twice-a-day meditation sessions, most others administer melatonin in capsules. This approach might be dangerous because the long-term effects of high doses of melatonin are unknown.

4. The Rife Machine

The Rife machine was developed in the 1930s by a microbiologist named Dr. Royal Rife. This machine attempts to kills cancer cells by administering specific sound frequencies to the body. The machine allegedly sends the sound waves deep into the tissues and is so effective that all that is required is a three-minute treatment every other day. While the promoters of this super-treatment (which costs thousands of dollars) claim phenomenal success, their claims are lacking evidentiary support.

5. DHEA Therapy

DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a potent steroid hormone. The body produces low quantities of DHEA naturally, but the production of DHEA decreases as the body ages. The DHEA promoters claim that the reduction in the "fountain of youth" hormone causes cancer, which is why high-dose DHEA supplementation is necessary to beat cancer. However, high doses of DHEA can potentially cause liver and prostate damage. While the research into the benefits of DHEA continues, so far no proof has been produced showing that DHEA helps fight cancer.

Just like a ship compartment that serves to block water, every day you should be able to block out a problem.

That means you do not have to constantly analyze the past and are too worried about the future. Noteworthy is today / this problem.

How does this practice?

Within days of starting on the morning after waking, with calm yourself imagine that you close the compartment and the focus of the day yesterday looking for a solution to solving the problem on this day.
Is this not actually create new problems because we are only fixated on these days without being able to imagine the success (happiness).

My answer is NO, why? because we speak the design of a ship and used to what it ships later. So we do not just look at each partition of your life but, how and to what a ship is made.

So here we can conclude that in designing healing diseases including mesothelioma, we should not get stuck in regret the past nor fear the future, because after we design a healing solution to reduce the stress we should focus only on healing today. Is not the only focus one more problem we can get out of the problem and appropriate answers to the above when we pile up every day just is not the problem of complications in the can. Mesothelioma is a devastatingly aggressive cancer that can form in the epithelial cells lining the heart, lungs, abdomen, and testes. Also, because this cancer is difficult to detect, it may have spread too far for you to heal completely. Instead, you can rely on surgery to help extend your life in the face of this disease.

Although mesothelioma can form in many different areas of your body, it is most common in the lining of the lungs. This is because microscopic asbestos fibers can become lodged in your lung tissue if you accidentally inhale them. Frustratingly, the body cannot dissolve the fibers, instead forming dense tissue nodules around them. Asbestos is a known human carcinogen, so over time these nodules can turn into cancerous tumors.

First, one of the most common side effects of mesothelioma in the lungs, or pleural mesothelioma, is the buildup of fluid in the space around the lungs. This pressure can hinder you from taking full, deep breaths. Some noninvasive surgeries, such as pleurodesis or thoracentesis, involve placing a long, thin needle into the fluid-filled cavity and draining the liquid. While this can help you breathe easier for a while, the fluid can build up again and again.

Next, you can undergo conventional lung surgeries such as pneumonectomy, lobectomy, or wedge resection. With these surgeries, doctors remove either an entire lung, a lobe of the lung, or a piece of the lung, respectively. However, tumors from mesothelioma are often widespread, which may prevent doctors from getting all of the tumors with one of these surgeries.

Lastly, there are two new surgery options for mesothelioma patients in an attempt to remove all of the diseased tissue. With a pleurectomy, doctors remove the layer of cells that line the lungs, called the pleura. This is often done only as a palliative treatment rather than a way to completely eradicate your cancer.

Another radical surgery option is an extrapleural pneumonectomy. This process involves removing the epithelial cells, or lining, from the lungs as well as those of the heart and diaphragm. If the tumors have gone deeper into your lungs, doctors may remove these masses during the process as well. Additionally, they can replace the lining with synthetic materials. This surgery can be difficult for weak patients, but it can also dramatically extend your lifespan.

Many people find solace in the fact asbestos is now banned. There was a great cheer the year it happened, but the ban has so many holes in it that it isn't much of a ban to speak of.

The manufacturers of asbestos products didn't make a lot of money on the products. No, they made absolutely huge amounts of money. As you can imagine, they were not particularly interested in giving up their cash cow. No, they fought like mad to keep the products going out and the revenues coming in. While they were unable to stop the assault on their products, they were able to delay banning of asbestos for nearly two decades.

Asbestos was eventually banned on July 12, 1989. At least that is the accepted date. Unfortunately, it is a red herring of sorts. The problem is the manufacturers didn't stop fighting. They challenged the ban in court. In 1991, they eventually convinced an appellate court to partially overturn the ban and things have remained the same to this day.

So, what is banned and what is not? Well, let's start with the easy part of the issue. Any "new uses" of asbestos are banned. This means that the material cannot be used in products or manners that it historically has not been used. For instance, it could not be used in an iPad.

What about past uses? Ah, that is a disturbing subject. Essentially, asbestos manufacturers can continue to use it in all products in the market prior to 1989 with certain exceptions. They are flooring felt, rollboard, and corrugated, commercial, or specialty paper. That is it. Asbestos can still be used in other construction material, clothing and whatever. In short, we are talking about a very weak ban indeed.

So, is asbestos included in a lot of products today? Some, but not very many. The problem is not the ban. Instead, it is simply very difficult to sell products that have asbestos in them. Would you buy one? I wouldn't! Where the asbestos ban of 1989 has proved fairly impotent, the reaction of consumers has made more of an impact. At least in the United States.

In addition, there is incontestable evidence that the asbestos industry chose to protect their profits rather than make this information known to the general public. Some of this evidence can be found in what has come to be known as "The Sumner Simpson Papers."

Saranac Laboratory is Hired to Research the Effects of Asbestos Dust

The Saranac Laboratory, located in the Adirondack Mountain region of upstate New York, had been doing research on dusts since the early 1920s. In 1936 a number of asbestos companies jointly funded Saranac to do research for them. They subsequently renewed their annual contract with Saranac Laboratory for the next ten years.

Part of what Saranac found was that there was a link between being exposed to asbestos and cancer.

In January 1947 the companies that funded the Saranac research met.

It has been discerned that the companies decided that "there would be no publication of the research of experiments without consent," and that anything that would be published "would not include any objectionable material." They specifically referred to, "any relation between asbestos and cancer."

The conglomerate that funded Saranac agreed that "the reference to cancer and tumors should be deleted" from the report. Consequently, when Saranac's report about their dust experiments was published, evidence that linked asbestos exposure to cancer was suppressed.

The Sumner Simpson Papers

From the 1930s through the 1940s Sumner Simpson was president of Raybestos-Manhattan, Inc.

In 1935, in correspondence to an attorney for Johns-Manville Corporation, Vandiver Brown, Simpson, when commenting on the asbestos industry, wrote "the less said about asbestos, the better off we are."

Simpson also pressured trade industry publications to follow the dictates of the asbestos industry's decisions. The publisher of Asbestos Magazine wrote Simpson a letter in 1939 which, when referring to asbestosis, said, "Always you have requested that for certain obvious reasons we publish nothing, and naturally, your wishes have been respected."

In 1941 Vandiver Brown, who had become a corporate officer of Johns-Manville Corporation, wrote, "I felt there was considerable likelihood that a number of subscribers would dislike an article on this subject in the trade magazine of the asbestos industry. I had in mind the ostrich-like attitude which has been evidenced from time to time by members of the industry."

The corporate cover up continued for decades.

How Did the Asbestos Industry Feel About Its Workers?

How the industry felt about its workers was probably best summed up in a document in 1966 written by the Director of Purchases for Bendix Corporation, E.A. Martin. In it he said:

"My answer to the problem is: if you have enjoyed a good life while working with asbestos products why not die from it. There's got to be some cause."
