Sweet-toothed children 'may have depression'

While most children like sweets, those with an extra-sweet tooth may be depressed or at higher risk of future alcohol problems, researchers say.

The US team report in the journal Addiction that certain children are especially drawn to very sweet tastes.

These were children who had a close relative with an alcohol problem or who themselves had symptoms of depression.

But it is unclear if the preference for the very sweet is down to genuine chemical differences or upbringing.

The researchers say sweet taste and alcohol trigger many of the same reward circuits in the brain.

It may be that even higher levels of sweetness are needed to make depressed children feel better

Lead author Julie Mennella said: "We know that sweet taste is rewarding to all kids and makes them feel good.

"In addition, certain groups of children may be especially attracted to the intense sweetness due to their underlying biology."

Experts say alcoholics tend to have a sweet tooth.

But the link is less clear in children. Other US researchers have shown that a preference for the sweetest drinks was found in the ones undergoing growth spurts.

In the latest study, the scientists at the Monell Chemical Senses Center asked 300 children aged five to 12, of whom half had a family member with alcohol dependency, to taste five sweet water drinks containing different amounts of sugar.

The children were asked to say which tasted the best and were also asked questions to check for depressive symptoms.

A quarter had symptoms that the researchers believed suggested they might be depressed.

Sweet tooth

Liking for intense sweetness was greatest in the 37 children who had both a family history of alcoholism and reported depressive symptoms.

These children preferred the drink containing the most sugar - 24% sucrose, which is equivalent to about 14 teaspoons of sugar in a cup of water and more than twice the level of sweetness in a typical cola.

This was a third more intense than the sweetness level preferred by the other children.

The researchers then decided to test whether the children's taste difference had any impact on their reaction to pain or discomfort - past studies have suggested sweets may help act as analgesics as well as mood lifters.

They found non-depressed children were able to tolerate keeping their hands in very cold water for longer if they had a sugar hit.

However, the extra sugar did nothing to the depressed children's pain threshold.

Cardiff University's Professor Tim Jacob, an expert in smell and taste, said the findings were interesting, but that it was hard to make firm conclusions or generalizations from one study alone.

He said the findings could be down to brain chemistry, but might also be explained by behavior and upbringing.

"While it is true that sweet things activate reward circuits in the brain, the problem is that sweets and sugar are addictive, because the activation of these reward circuits causes opioid release, and with time more is needed to achieve the same effect.

"But the taste difference may be explained by differences like parental control over sweet consumption."

Besides, it was a great opportunity to meet Maria Sharapova in person and receive a special prize from Sony Ericsson.

All students were instructed by the Sony Ericsson design team and supported by Maria, who sent them a personal message in order to help inspire future designs and ideas.

The design that was considered the best was made by British student Georgie Davies, 20-year-old second year student, who is studying for a BA in Fashion Design and Development.

Georgie’s idea was to determine a way in which a person could be alerted when their cell phone rings in a noisy bar, club or restaurant.

The idea realized in a cocktail dress made up of interactive scales, inspired by wings of a butterfly.

The Bluetooth-enabled lights are placed in this group of small, white translucent scale embellishments that run from top to the bottom of one side of the dress, from the shoulder to the hip.

When the wearer’s mobile phone rings, the scales light up.

Davies explains what her inspiration was:

When you are in a pub or a bar, you can never, ever hear your phone.”

Georgie received a prize that included two tickets to London Fashion Week, two tickets to the Wimbledon Championships at the All England Club and entry to the Sony Ericsson WTA Pre-Wimbledon Party, in association with Ralph Lauren.

Unfortunately no one can say for sure whether the dress will hit the market or not.

Maria Sharapova was very excited about the project as well.

She said:

I’m thrilled to be involved in such an innovative project that encourages creativity and pushes the boundaries of fashion.”

Maria Sharapova is a tennis superstar and fashion icon. Since October 2007 she has been a Sony Ericsson’s Global Brand Ambassador.

She has shown her interest and good knowledge of fashion and glamour by working closely in a team with Sony Ericsson to create and work on various fashion projects. Maria Sharapova Design Collection was launched in 2008.

It was the line including cell phone accessories designed to compliment any woman’s outfit.

We have waited for this collection for a long time and at last it has been created. Streetwear brand Scotch & Soda has unveiled a womenswear collection called Maison Scotch, for Spring 2010.

The range includes 150 pieces and is focused at denim with vintage washes, shirts coming in blue, red and white, knitted cardigans and striped tops.

The collection brings the same preppy, streetwear feel as the men’s line does but it is a bit more sophisticated and feminine.

The Maison Scotch is intended to suit a rather wide age range of women - from 20 to 40 years.

The line isn’t glamorous or exquisite like lots of items at the market now but it looks nice. It has some interesting detailing components, metal elements, flag tags and hangtags. This way, I mean avoiding adding glamour to their items, the company differentiates itself from the rest.

Maison Scotch is going to fit between such brands as Diesel, Replay, Fornarina, Miss Sixty, Hilfiger; but also be placed next to brands like Boss Orange, Twin-Set, Patrizia Pepe, Nolita and Rare.
The range will be presented at Bread & Butter Berlin on July 1-3. Prices are very reasonable but haven’t been confirmed yet. However, it is clear already that they would be close to the prices for items in men’s range, where T-shirts start at $16.

Diamond Face Shape

Hot tints: Orange and Pink

‘See-through’ swimwear to let in Sun, keep out stares

At last there is someone who has invented swimwear material that allows us to have an even tan without those horrible strap lines on our body!

The Tan Through range from Kiniki is made so well that despite the fact the human eye cannot penetrate the fabric the UV rays which cause the skin to darken can pass through, allowing people to bronze all over.

About 80 per cent of sunlight reaches the skin through thousands of microscopic holes in the stretchy patented Transol yarn that was described by the company as ‘chicken-wire mesh material’.

The fabric is entirely transparent when held up to the light but the wearer should not worry about that as special animal prints and abstract patterns confusing the eye make the onlookers see only a solid block of fabric.

The line includes one-piece swimsuits, bikinis and wraps for women, and briefs, hipsters and tangas for men. The price ranges between $28.21 for the briefs and wrap to $56.13 for the swimsuit or full bikini set. Women’s sizes available start at eight and go up to 20, while men can choose from small to XXL.

John Walker, 58, who owns the Staffordshire-based firm and has been producing underwear and swimwear for over 35 years, said:

They are selling like hot cakes. We only officially launched four weeks ago but we cannot keep up with demand at the moment.”

He explains how he had an idea of such a swimsuit six years ago:

I had some fishnet material in the cutting room and light was coming in from the overhead skylights.”

I realised using a fabric with holes would be brilliant for taning through - if it wasn’t totally inappropriate.”

Then I came up with the idea of prints to confuse the eye and have been working on design for the last six years.”

If you hold it up to a window you can see right through it but once on the body it looks just like a normal swimsuit.”

Mr Walker claims wearers are guaranteed a smooth all-over tan as long as they remember one piece of advice:

There is an elastic seam on every garment which we advise customers to move regularly because the sun cannot penetrate it. If you’re not careful it will get in the way of a tan,” he said.

However, skin cancer campaigners warn that wearing such swimwear can cause the increase in cases of malignant melanoma. According to their predictions the number of people who will be diagnosed with the condition is expected to reach 10,000 this year.

Richard Clifford, who is a secretary the Karen Clifford Skin Cancer Charity, says:

By virtue of the fact they are putting a swimsuit over the skin it would be very difficult to apply sun cream underneath.”

I think it is a dangerous idea and in the interests of vanity. We recommend UV protected clothing and this is the very opposite.”

Five people a day are diagnosed with malignant melanomas. It is a killer and affects more people here than in Australia.”

Mr Walker doesn’t agree with the fact the invention can bring so much harm. He insists that customers are advised to use sun block all over.

We recommend that you put the same sun protection on underneath the swimsuit as you would on the exposed parts of your body,” he says.

The Tan Through range is made of a common yarn, polybutylene terephthalate known as PBT, a synthetic material with an elastic stretch which contains no lycra. This makes it more resistant to suncream, chlorine and seawater and thus it is more breathable for the wearer.

John Walker says:

No one else in the world has developed the yarn in this way. ‘Imagine a fish net or string vest material. We have made a very very minute form of that by shrinking any holes right down.”

Heidi Montag’s Bikini collection

Earlier the reality show starlet teamed with affordable chain Anchor Blue for a hot line called Heidiwood, which has since stopped production.

I love bathing suits,” Heidi says. “I feel like I wear them more than anyone so it makes sense for me. I did a fashion show for Ashley Paige a year ago in Miami and I’ve been such a big fan of hers.”

Heidi will make the first public appearance of six styles from the collaboration on I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here beginning June 1, which will be available on AshleyPaige.com.

The full collection will be presented in an I Dream of Jeanie - themed catwalk show during Miami Fashion Week in July 2009.

Heidi will take part on the runway show to demonstrate the ’60s-inspired range among blonde models showing off particularly designed T-shirts that read “I Dream of Heidi”.

That’s the only bathing suits I will be wearing on the show,” Heidi tells E! News of the three-week shooting schedule in Costa Rica. “I’ll be living in them. That’s all I’ll be wearing.”

They’re for every size, all body types,” says Heidi. “They’re for little women and bigger women.”

Heidi says she’s ramped up her own workout regime with help from her husband, Spencer Pratt.

Spencer and I work out together. We kind of do a couple’s workout, so I really push myself because I’m always trying to keep up with Spencer,” she says of her routine, which includes 60- to 90-minute sessions, five days a week, with a coach.

Ashley Paige and Heidi Montag’s full line will hit major department stores and budget stores as they have both a high-end luxury collection and a lower priced point line planned so everyone can buy a Heidi and Ashley swimwear!
