Android of Google Most Used Mobile Phone OS

According to a study released Monday by comScore, Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android surpassed Research In Motion's (NASDAQ:RIIM) Blackberry in January as the most-used mobile phone operating system in the United States.

Android, which entered the market in October of 2008, ran on 31.2% of all smart-phones, while 30.4% used Blackberry, which is down from 42% a year ago.

At the beginning of 2010, Android had only a 7% share of the U.S. market, in 4th place. It overtook Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone OS in June, Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS in November, and finally overtook Blackberry this January.

The key for Android has been Google's open source business model; the company published the entire source code for other businesses to use, and licenses the mobile OS for free, allowing hardware manufacturers the ability to pre-load the software onto their phones instead of paying a team of engineers to develop a proprietary platform.

LG, HTC, Samsung, and Motorola, among others, have taken advantage of the Android opportunity. The ability to focus exclusively on hardware has allowed manufacturers to bring phones to market much more quickly than in the past.

Worldwide, Android still trails Nokia's Symbian OS in total users, but Nokia, which has been rapidly losing market share, announced recently it was ditching the Symbian OS in favor of Microsoft's Windows Phone OS.

Android now runs on more than 170 different kinds of mobile devices, with more than 350,000 activated every day.

Intel to pay $1.5B for Nvidia's technology licensing fees

Nvidia (NVDA) announced that it has signed a new six-year cross-licensing agreement with Intel (INTC). For the future use of Nvidia's technology, Intel will pay Nvidia an aggregate of $1.5B in licensing fees payable in five annual installments, beginning Jan. 18. Nvidia and Intel have also agreed to drop all outstanding legal disputes between them. Under the new agreement, Intel will have continued access to Nvidia 's full range of patents. In return, Nvidia will receive an aggregate of $1.5B in licensing fees, to be paid in annual installments, and retain use of Intel's patents, consistent with its existing six-year agreement with Intel. This excludes Intel's proprietary processors, flash memory and certain chipsets for the Intel platform. The existing agreement is to expire March 31.

Google Inc, the world's largest internet search engine, has released "Zeitgeist 2010: How the world searched", an aggregation of billions of search queries the company says "captures the spirit of 2010".

In a nutshell, 2010 has been a year of global struggles ranging from the debt crisis, soaring unemployment, political turmoil to achievements in the medical and scientific fields, and catastrophic tragedies caused by both man and nature.

"According to PCWorld, Google has acknowledged it has modified its search engine to identify businesses with poor reviews and lower their search results rankings accordingly.
The move comes after a recent NYTimes story that outlined how one online vendor took advantage of the search engine system. The online eyeware store owner claimed that his site ranking on Google's search results was directly proportional to the number of complaints posted about his business by upset customers.
Vitaly Borker, founder and owner of DecorMyEyes, said, ""I've exploited this opportunity because it works. No matter where they post their negative comments, it helps my return on investment. So I decided, why not use that negativity to my advantage?""
However, Google said Wednesday the tactic will no longer work, noting that its team has developed an algorithm that flags merchants with bad reviews and assigns them lower rankings.
Amit Singhal, a Google Fellow, wrote in a blog post, ""I am here to tell you that being bad is, and hopefully will always be, bad for business in Google's search results."" Singhal also claims that user complaints did not benefit DecorMyEyes' ranking. Rather, it was news articles discussing the site that propelled it to the top of the rankings.
Google is still working on a way to factor user sentiment into its ranking system without disproportionately affecting the ranking of controversial people or topics."
