Here are some of the Behind the Scenes pictures at how my cover artwork Battle on the Barge for Moonstone's Buckaroo Banzai: Hardest of the Hard part 2 was made. Again, combining my skills as an FX artist as well as my love for film, I sculpted two very rough creature maquettes for reference. They are each about 2.5-3 inches. Also, my dad and I built a Gatling gun prop for Perfect Tommy to hold. Click images to view larger:

Behind-The-Scenes of The Spider: Judgement Knight #1...

Here are some of the Behind the Scenes pictures at how my artwork for Moonstone's The Spider: Judgement Knight #1 was made. After the concept stage, it was time to get some photo references. While getting models for the characters is easy, getting the right locations is not. Being a hyper-realist, every shadow counts. Therefore, combining my skills as an FX artist as well as my love for film, I built several miniature sets to enhance the realism of the world in which the Spider fights. Really, they are nothing more than paper-cube crates and paper-cylinder barrels I designed and printed off my computer,... then after much folding and taping, I constructed the sets to fit my compositions. Above is the first image of the story where the thugs are shooting into the darkness of the warehouse. I had to put my hand in the photo reference so that the camera had something to focus on.

Above was for the second illustration. Here the Spider reflects on what the thugs have done. To build a bank vault, I just used two pieces of foam core and four action figures. I actually sculpted a 40s NYC Police hat out of kneaded eraser for the extra bit of realism.

Above was the third in the series. Once again, I just used the same paper cubes, set up in a different way.

Above was the sixth painting, and again, I just used the same paper crates and barrels.

Hey Everyone, How do you like the new look? I have been working hard customizing this blog. I have also been working on an online store where you can purchase signed prints, Halloween masks, publications I have worked on, and more. The store will hopefully be up and running in the next week or so, so keep posted.

P.S. As the links section is continuously growing too big for the sidebar, I added a section for all my artist friends' blogs under BLOG LINKS in the above menu, which I will continue adding to as time goes on.

SATANIC PANIC Mask Production Line...

While I was at Zagone Studios a couple weeks ago pitching concepts for their 2010 line, which I have begun sculpting, I took some pictures of my SATANIC PANIC Mask as they are being produced, . . . AWS Awards Dinner in NYC!

On Friday, April 24th, 2009, the American Watercolor Society held their Awards Dinner for their 142nd International Exhibition and Travel Show at the Salmagundi Club in New York, NY.

My painting Never Known, Never Forgotten received the Dong Kingman Award. I was so thrilled, honored, and humbled to be there amongst so many amazing paintings and so many unbelievably talented artists! My painting received great feedback, and everyone was so nice. As they presented me with my award, the AWS president, Jim McFarlane commented about my age, which was a huge compliment since I was the youngest one there. Here are some pictures from the event:

Visiting the Society of Illustrators...

While in NYC, we visited the Society of Illustrators. A recent friend of mine, George Fernandez, set up lunch for my father and I to have in the member's dining room, something that is exclusive to members.

The current exhibit there was The Line of Fashion. It was really interesting to see as, according to one of the signs on the walls, fashion illustration is completely lost due to the camera and photography. It was great to see all the other work in the hallways and in the dining room as well. Getting to see all of these classic illustrations by the masters was a learning experience in itself. The food was amazing too!

While there, I picked up a few books and I had a chance to learn about membership, which is definitely something I am going to do in the very near future. Thanks again George!!

Trip to NYC...

On Thursday morning, the 23rd, my father and I left for NYC for the AWS Awards Dinner that took place on the 24th. (more info in one of the following blogs).

As we were only in NYC until the 25th, we had little time to sight see, but managed to get in a few destinations. We saw the Statue of Liberty, Ground Zero, Native American Museum, Central Park, and Times Square. It was a great trip! My father and I had tons of fun, and it certainly was a special time spent with my dad.

Well, when I was posting about my trip to Sedona, I forgot to post my little adventure to Cooper'stown, Alice Cooper's restaurant. Before leaving Arizona from the Pheonix airport on May 2nd, I couldn't leave without first paying homage to one of the greatest Shock Rock icons of all time. It was fun! My sister and I had to order and eat in a hurry, take pictures, then off to the airport. Unfortunately, that isn't really Alice next to me in the picture (that one is cardboard!). Oh, and by the way, Alice's new CD Along Came a Spider ROCKS!

Two of my paintings pictured above have been selected for inclusion into the Neolaia/Pathos: new.youth.passion exhibition at the Hellenic Museum and Cultural Center. The show will run September 10, 2009 to January 10, 2010. The Artists' Reception will take place on September 10, 2009from 6-8 pm. Both of these paintings have been prepped for museum quality limited edition signed and numbered giclee prints. The Consequence of My Creation: First Place!

Consequence of Creation 22x16 Mixed Media on Illustration Board

On Sunday, April 5th, 2009, the Naperville Art League held their Annual Public Art Competition Exhibition at the Naperville Fine Art Center. This year's theme was "On the Edge." My painting Consequence of Creation took 1st Place in the Adult Category! Here is my 100 word statement on how the painting relates to the "On the Edge" theme:

Dr. Frankenstein’s promise, as is his Creation, lies on the edge literally and metaphorically. While the Monster is only an unfinished sketch of human existence, he is more loosely rendered the further over the edge he is. As his outer appearance is ugly and full of scars, his mind (the head being the most tightly rendered) is more complete as the Monster learns and understands philosophy. However, even with his knowledge of philosophy, he too is on the edge -- forced there by his Maker -- forcing the Monster to be the ultimate “consequence” to the Maker abandoning his “creation.”

SATANIC PANIC Mask gets Press...

My painting Never Known, Never Forgotten not only has been awarded the Dong Kingman Award in the American Watercolor Society's 142^nd Annual International Exhibition, but will also be in the 2009-2010 Traveling Show! 2009 Sedona International Film Festival...

From February 24 through March 1, 2009, my sister Melissa Kosar and I were at the Sedona International Film Festival in Sedona, Arizona. Her film The Doll Hospital was one of 140 films for the 2009 Official Selection. The film showed twice, once on Friday and once on Sunday, and it was very well recieved by all who viewed the film.

In 2008, The Doll Hospital won 2nd Place in Lifetime Movie Network's Every Woman's Film Competition, and received Fan Favorite in the same competition on MyLifetime.com thanks to all your votes and support!

Due to our schedule with the Film Festival, we were not able to go on any hikes or jeep excursions, however, we did make it to several of Sedona's renowned art galleries, and most importantly, we met some amazing filmmakers, talented actors, saw 28 wonderful films, and made many new friends. Overall it was a great time!!

Three of my paintings (pictured above) have been juried into the Norris Gallery's Watercolor 09 Art Exhibit held at the Dellora A. Norris Cultural Arts Center (1040 Dunham Road, St. Charles, IL 60174). The show will take place from March 7th through May 2nd 2009. The Reception & Awards Ceremony will take place Sunday, April 19 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
