When I first started thekcguy.com in November 2007, I was hoping to make a resource of long-useful information about local restaurants, events, points of interest, and culture of Kansas City. The daily drivel that I add on here wasn't my main focus, but I just used it as an avenue to point you to the new pages that I had added with more detailed information. Over time, the task of coming up with something "interesting" to say each day has distracted me from the more thorough pieces that I could produce. In short, quality has been sacrificed in the name of quantity.

To address this weakness, I'm going to stop the daily updates and devote the front page entirely to the current month. Sure, I'll add in updates to it as things in town develop, but I'm not going to have a box in the left column devoted to each day anymore. I have actually been developing monthly pages since the beginning, but they weren't very well highlighted on the front page, so they were a bit of a well-kept secret. That's unfortunate since I think they really are useful to people. This means that the daily rss feed will be going away, as will the daily email list. I'll probably replace the daily email list with some kind of newsletter eventually, but I'll take some time to figure that out.

I hope that you'll stick around and see how the front page develops. I'll be doing it in slow increments over the next month, and look forward to hearing from you readers about what is useful or confusing.

First, apparently Cafe Trio is open for lunch now. I've had some great dinners there since they moved to the old Frondizzi's spot on the hill just NorthEast of the Plaza. Lunch there could be great, but it also may be pricy.

Also, it seems that Baja 600 is open again after their fire. Curiously enough, I guess it was caused by lightning. I just presumed it was a kitchen fire.

Speaking of fire, I noticed that Original Pizza in Overland Park is temporarily closed after a fire there. I hope they get this place back open; it's pretty quick and yummy lunch food.

It sounds like a pretty worthy cause and is actually having an upcoming fundraiser at Californio's on Sunday, Aug 16th.

I actually don't usually fawn over everything that Boulevard produces. In fact, I can think of at least two beers that they make that should be grounds for some kind of class action suit. But, their pilsner is worth a try.

Given the amount of coverage that the local bloggers have given the pilsner, I was pretty interested in it. Here are some of the posts that I can recall reading over the past month about it:

Bull E. Vard threatened to mow his lawn just so that he could experience the refreshment afterwards

Owen from Fat City seems to have been just one step smarter and convinced two other guys to mow his lawn before sampling it.

My solution was to do no actual manual labor, but to just stand outdoors for a moment while I enjoyed the first few sips of one. Then, I was back to the air-conditioning. Indoors or out, I can confirm that Boulevard Pilsner blows doors off of the reborn Schlitz for about the same price, and unlike PBR, it's not necessary that it is kept near the freezing point to be tolerable. Thanks, Boulevard. Please keep this one in the year-round rotation.

Spaulding's overnight reports. Normally, he points out interesting incidents of trauma or severe weather around town. This morning, though, he has highlighted just about every detail of the overnight shift. In some ways, it's interesting to see what goes on overnight as the nightlife folks experience their trials and tribulations. It's also a reminder, though, of how monotonous an overnight shift can be between the moments of excitement.
