Here are a couple of gents to keep your eye on, both Calvin Roche and Josh Rigal are making some quality noise in the London music scene and we were lucky enough to share a meal with them and hear them play for us live and play some first mixes from the upcoming record.  I was quite impressed with the quality of the recording here at Savoy Studios, but then I think we have the good music and talent of these guys to thank for that.

It’s a show slam bang full of brand new music from artists you know like Emily Wolfe, Onions, and Pepper & Shepherd.  We’ve also got more new artists to the show than you could shake a stick at like The Nameless Girl, Canvas Wall, and Fran Smith.   And, Mark Riley joins us from Mostly to share his brand new opus -  a mini EP wrapped up and transitioned all onto the same track entitled, “Tales of the Blindingly Obvious.”  The show ended up being superduper eclectic because of this, but I know you like these kinds of shows from time to time.

Alice Rock pile in their equipment into the flat for a rousing (and possibly neighbor disrupting) live session.  They also spoke to us about their origins, how they came to live in London (and then Colchester), the new album, drum sticks, marriage, and their new video for Model QT100 which involved painting shorts green.  I couldn’t make this stuff up if I tried!

A big thanks to Mark Riley for his sterling help on the show – he’s invaluable in just about any situation!  And to my wife Jamie for sorting out dinner for everyone, teas, drinks, and for taking undue abuse from me during the show.  It has been recommended that I be nicer to her on air, and I’ve promised to take it under advisement.

Broadcasting live from the Açores island of Sao Miguel this week as a joint show with Rodrigo de Sa of Cowboy Cantor.  We only were able to do an hour due to the delicious fish being cooked by Rodrigo’s mum.  Yup, we got to meet the whole family.  We also got to hear new Stevie Hawkins and Asteroid Funk, Alice Rock, Bus Stop Dreams, Pepper and Shephard, and Rodrigo played a Portuguese band located in New York called Vovete.

It’s a pretty fun show even for an hour.  Thanks to Rodgiro, Maura, Jamie and Rodgiro’s brilliant family who were all waiting for us to finish the show so we could eat: Carolina, Sergio, Isabelle, Daniel and Alice.  We miss the Açores already.

Van Susans are originally Bromley lads who leaped into fame and went from playing gigs in front of family and friends to performing at IndigO2 all in the space of a year. Now we see them playing at Proud2 to celebrate the release of their new single “Bricks Not Sticks Or Straw”.

(Editor’s note: If you listen to the audio portion, Claire profusely apologies for calling the band “Van Susan” and not “Van Susans”.  She has since attended another one of their gigs and her housemate has become a die-hard fan, so I think atonement has been achieved.)

How the band got started:

“Me and Olly met and started writing songs from there” Rob.
(They then recruited Rob’s 2 brothers along with Ollys brothers best mate and started Van Susans. Holly was the latest member to join, and this was in fact her first live gig with the band.)

Described your music in 3 words:

“It’s pretty good.” Olly G.

“Average at best” Ed.

Who are your influences:

“We are all pretty varied.” Olly A.

“Rihanna” Rob.

“All have different taste, I like Hip hop.” Holly.

“That’s weird. We love American rock bands – which we probably shouldn’t say since we are a British band.” Olly A.

“I find it difficult to decide who I like more out of The Wanted and One Direction.” Olly G.

How do you write your own music/choose the style of it:

“We basically fight, and the last one standing gets to decide.” Rob.

“We start with a guitar riff and then go from there. Me Rob and Ed are the main song writers of band at the moment, but Olly [G] you’ve written a few songs. It’s a pretty good team we’ve got going on.” Olly A.

“We are pretty mellow, play music.” Rob.

Most looking forward to:

“Playing.” Olly A.
“Going home. No I’m joking, the crowd.” Olly G.

Pre show ritual:

“We like to have a meal before hand, have a little chat before we go on. Bond. Actually we once did a hand shake on stage, before anyone said anything, it was a bit weird.” Olly G.

“We recently toured with the Beautiful South, only half the band, the best half, me Rob and Ed (joking) Along with Holly joining the band.” Olly A.

Yes, after two live acts cancelled due to illness (take your vitamin C) we were graced with two guests in the studio and two phone interviews, along with a bunch of great indie tunes.  Umong Shah first speaks to us about Discovery 2′s special International Live Music Conference showcase on Wednesday evening.  Then we spoke to Olly from Van Susans who have a gig at Proud2 in the O2 on Saturday.  Lastly, we spoke to Louis Eliot, chief musical delegate of Kernow in the City, also on Saturday evening at Rich Mix in Shoreditch.  With Mark Riley along in the studio as well, it’s a ram packed show, indeed.

Amazing, absolutely amazing.  We have hit 150 episodes (not counting the last four Awdio specials) and we didn’t even mention it on the show. It’s because we were so excited, or just getting on with the purpose of which has brought us this far in the first place – independent music.  This special show features brand new stuff from Van Susans, Calvin Roche, Roaming Hills of Buffalo, and a smattering of my favourite tracks from the last six months of Discovery 2 previews.

Claire Rozario, our new intern joined Mark and myself for the first time this week.  Although she didn’t get her own microphone, we let her talk in the background – if you turn up the podcast you can probably hear her.  She enjoyed herself so much she’s coming back soon and we promised to have a microphone for her then.  We spoke briefly about producing audio and what my audio setup was and so I have taken a picture.  Let me know if you have comments or questions!  jw (at) thejustinwayneshow.com.

Another absolutely fantastic gig at the AAA in west London for the Discovery 2 recorded live and produced for your listening pleasure.  The room was so packed that the recording got a bit muffled this week, but I am investing in gaffer tape and a small mic stand so I can get the recorder above the crowd from now on.  That doesn’t damper the fact we had four GREAT performances.

We’re moving the live show to Mondays and podcasts will be released the following Sunday.  Why?  So the magical Mark Riley can join us and we can be in a better slot to promote album releases which usually occur on Tuesdays.

Aside from this change in day of the week, it seems we’ve finally found a happy medium as things since we’ve returned have gone very smoothly.  Both the quality of the shows and the regularity of the podcast posting  has gone well, and we have had great response from all of you.

Make sure you pick up your copy of The L Project’s single, “It Does Get Better” to support LGBT education in schools to fight bullying and youth suicides caused by mis/non education.  It’s a great song for a great cause, and you can hear it again on this week’s show.
