Joomla 1.6 Alpha Released

It's here! Grab the 1.6 alpha of Joomla 1.6. Rob Schley fills us in on the progress from the Google Group:

"The new ACL system is well on its way. You can now create new user groups, assign users to groups, assign groups to access levels, and assign content viewing permissions to access levels. We are still working out the details of the user interface and business logic for the advanced access permissions. The upgrade to MooTools 1.2 is complete and we’ve begun cleaning up core JavaScript code to make it more compact and efficient. The menu system and menu manager have been completely rewritten and now feature a number of major improvements that should make them more powerful, efficient, and easier to customize.

We’ve refactored a number of other components including com_content, com_users, and com_weblinks to make them easier to maintain, customize, and extend. We’ve trimmed a lot of legacy code and media from the core which reduced the package size by about 30% or so. We’ve also made a number of performance improvements to the plugin system and the menu system that should create a visible improvement on larger websites.

So, in light of all of that, we’ve put together an alpha build to give people an opportunity to see what we’ve been working on and have a peek at what’s coming in 1.6. It is important to understand that this is a technology preview, not a final product. There are many issues, rough corners, dripping faucets, and outright broken pipes. We know this and you should too. Many features are still broken or extremely buggy so don’t panic if something doesn’t work as you might expect it to. As I said before, there is still much to be done.

Video Tutorial: Difference Between Modules, Plugins & Components

One of my followers, Jon on Twitter, asked:

"Where can I find a video or something explaining the difference between modules, plugins & components?"

Look no further Jon! Watch below to learn the difference.

In a nutshell:

Modules are blobs of content that live around the edges of your site. The position of them is determined by the template that you use.
Plugins affect your content in different ways. For instance the audio playback that I use on my site is a plugin.
Components are big extensions. They replace the main area of content. Look at Jreviews and JEvents as examples of Components. Technically, creating articles using the content component.

Joomla 1.5.10 released

Grab it while it's hot! Joomla released the update to 1.5.10, fixing some security issues. Update today to get fixed. I did it and haven't seen any ill effects.

Mike's first ever guest interview with Stephen Fisher, lead designer of the Joomla team at the CMS Showdown at South by Southwest (SxSW). Steve shares how he became involved with the showdown, how well Joomla did in the competition, and how the whole thing was a win for open source. I of course declare Joomla the winner by far. Steve also shares his insight into Tamka, the hot new set of blogging tools about to hit Joomla. And of course I can't let him off the hook without giving his one big complaint about Joomla.

I also talk about Joomla Day UK, and about some big news in the Joomla world: CCK (Custom Content Kit) has arrived in two forms with Zoo and K2. In a future episode I'll dive into these two really interesting components. Download Episode 15 today.

How I install and prepare Joomla

Joomla out of the box needs some configuring before it's ready to go. I've installed Joomla over 100 times in order to teach people how to use it. I've developed a list of things that I do beforehand. How to reset your password

Forgot your Joomla password? Here's how you can reset it:

1. More than likely your hosting provider gives you a tool called phpMyAdmin. Log into your hosting control panels to find it.
2. Use phpMyAdmin to access your Joomla database.

3. Click on the little icon next to xxx_users. The xxx might say "jos," but it could be something else. What matters is that you use "users."

4. Find the login you want to change and click the pencil icon next to it.

5. Set the password to MD5 and type a new password in. Click Save.

TinyURL is very popular with services like Twitter. What does it do? It takes a long URL and makes it shorter. You can now have this on your Joomla site with a new plugin from JFoobar. Check it out.

The nice thing about doing it this way is that you don't have to rely on a third party website.

Improve Navigability with Split Menus & Joomla 1.5

During episode 7 I focused on how to use split menus to better setup multiple menus in Joomla. Ben wrote in and wondered if I could be a bit more specific on how to set this up, so I'm doing him one better by giving you all the first video tutorial on how to use split menus.

If you have any sort of top menu navigation system, and you want to show a menu on the left or right only after a visitor clicks on one of your top menu items, you need to use split menus. Here's why:

Bread crumbs are better preserved
URLS are better preserved

Plus, if your template supports it, when a menu item is clicked on the side, the top menu item will keep its indicator status.

A bug/security fix has just been released for Joomla. Grab it while it's hot. This fixes the issue first reported on my post 1.5.7 Security Issue?, which led to a rift between Joomla and JoomlaTools. Full details after the break:

Flash 10 breaks Media Manager, JCE Uploader, more?

I've seen some reports in the JCE forums that adding images is broken since the release of Flash 10. This appears to also affect the Media Manager. One fix is to switch the uploading method to HTML rather than Flash--which means you can only upload one file at a time. Hopefully this can get resolved soon!

1.6 Release Date?

One of the question I get asked the most is about the release date of Joomla 1.6. Some discussion popped up about it among the Joomla developers, and from the chat I've inferred that the date for release could happen by the end of the year. If it doesn't make it then, perhaps releasing it on the one year anniversary of Joomla would be a nice symbol as well.

1.5.7 Security Issue?

Over at Joomlatools comes a report stating that they've discovered a big security issue in 1.5.7. They claim that they've reported the issue to the Joomla Security Strike team 3 weeks ago but it hasn't been fixed. Without an official response from Joomla, it's hard to know whether this issue is serious, but from the track record at Joomlatools, I'm inclined to believe them. So, are you going to apply their patch?

UPDATE--Joomla responds. What do you think of the response? They took this seriously, no?
