Apple releases iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus

Apple announced the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus today. The newer iPhones have the following features:

3D Touch (pressure sensitive touch)
Haptic feedback like Apple Watch
Live Photos software feature
Front Flash for selfies (by making screen bright)
Improved front and back cameras (5MP front, 12 MP back)
4K video recording at 60 fps
Second generation Touch ID
A9 chip with M9 motion chip

Apple also released a new Rose Gold color in addition to Silver, Gold and Space Gray colors.

The new phones will be up for pre-order on 12th September and will ship on 25th September, for $649 (16GB), $749 (64GB) and $849 (128GB) for iPhone 6s and $100 more for iPhone 6s Plus.

iOS 9 will be available on September 16 for all users.

iPhone 5S

Apple has released the iPhone 5C and 5S models. iPhone 5C is just an iPhone 5 with a plastic body. It comes in 5 colors: Green, Blue, Yellow, Pink and White. The iPhone 5S is a newer iteration of the iPhone 5. Notable features include: 2 LED flash lights for camera, Burst mode for camera, Touch ID (Fingerprint sensor in the home button) and a new A7 64-bit processor with a M7 chip to handle motion tracking. The 5S is available in Silver (previously known as white), Space gray (previously known as black) and a new gold color.

The iPhone 5C costs $99 (16GB) and $199 (32GB) on contract. Though almost all carriers in the US are selling it for FREE with contract.

The iPhone 5S retails for $199, $299 and $399 for 16GB, 32GB and 64GB with contract. These are also $100 cheaper if purchased through a carrier.

Apple announced iOS 7 at WWDC today. iOS 7 redefines iOS and is the biggest change since the launch of the iPhone. Besides the new UI experience, it has several new features:

Camera - now you can add filters like Instagram
Photos - new views to organize Camera Roll into moments based on location
Photo Stream - now you can contribute pictures to public streams
Weather - new look that shows weathers for all location in a single view
Maps - now you can send directions from the Mac (OS X Maverick) to iOS
AppStore - added "Nearby" section to see popular apps in an area
Control center - pull up a menu from the bottom to access settings (added flashlight)
Music - cover flow is discontinued, now features a grid view of album art
iTunes Radio - Apple's take on Pandora and Spotify
Activation Lock - Lost iOS devices can only be activated with your Apple ID, even after a wipe
Multitasking - now you can see apps as cards (like BlackBerry and WebOS) and flick to close
Notification Center - now has tabs to separate "Today", "All" and "Missed" notifications
Siri - now supports more languages and has new sources like Wikipedia
AirDrop - now share with nearby devices over Wifi (Apple's answer to bump)
iCloud Keychain - cloud based password management system synced across all devices
Call and Message blocking - block calls and messages from selected senders
Siri in the car - Siri access in your car, coming soon in 2014 vehicles

These are main features to iOS 7 besides the completely redesigned look across the whole operating system. iOS 7 launches in beta today (only for developers), with final release scheduled for fall. iOS 7 will run on iPhone 4, 4S and 5 (some features like AirDrop only work on iPhone 5). It will also run on the iPad 2+ and 5th gen iPod touch.

Its WWDC again and Apple has announced iOS 6, the next generation of its mobile operating system. There are a lot of major changes in this iteration of iOS, main changes include:

Maps - No more Google Maps! Apple's own Maps application with maps served by TomTom
Do Not Disturb - Mute your notifications and calls at night so no one wakes you up
Mail - a new Mail application with VIP lists synced with iCloud
Siri - now supports sports and movies, more things you can ask
Passbook - a wallet for boarding passes, tickets, cards, etc.
Facetime without WiFi - now you can use 3G
Facebook integration - now share from any app
Share Photo Streams with Friends and Family
Advanced call handing - send to voicemail, send text reply, etc.
Lots of under the hood changes...

iPhone 4S Now Available

Apple has released its iPhone 4S in the US today. Those who pre-ordered online have started receiving the iPhone. If you order one online now, then it would ship in 1-2 weeks.

The iPhone 4S comes in 16GB, 32GG and 64GB versions for $199, $299 and $399. It is available through AT&T, Verizon and Sprint carriers in the US.

Firmware 4.2 released with AirPrint and AirPlay

Apple has announced firmware 4.2 which brings AirPrint and AirPlay to the iOS devices and finally get the iPad into the multitasking era. The firmware can be downloaded via iTunes by connecting the device to iTunes and clicking "Check for Updates".

So there have been a lot of rumors about the next generation iPhone. But now the rumors have been confirmed as the prices of iPhone 3GS have reduced and Apple Store employees have been instructed about the arrival of the next generation iPhones. Also, Boy Genius Report has reported that the phones will be available before the end of June.

The iPhone 4 fiasco

So as the news has spread, an Apple employee (Grey Powell) lost the next gen. iPhone prototype in a bar and another person got it. He tried to return it back to Apple and failed. Gizmodo then purchased the prototype for $5000 and exposed it to the masses. Apple then contacted Gizmodo asking for the prototype back. That's the fiasco in a nutshell.

iPhone 4 Event Overview

Its April and the next major iPhone OS release is here. iPhone OS 4. So whats new? There are over 100 new features, but here are 7 major features that were demoed at the event:

1. Multitasking.

Apple has finally added multi-tasking to the iPhone. Its an essential feature when you have apps for music streaming and instant messaging. Now you can double tap the home screen to multi-task!

Note: This only works on the iPhone 3GS and 3rd gen iPod touch.

2. Folders.

With more apps, comes more icon space. Apple has introduced folders to add multiple app icons to. Just drag an app icon on top of the other to make them in a folder. Pretty nice implementation!

3. Enhanced Mail Application.

Mails displayed together from all mailboxes and threaded grouping of mail (like Gmail). Nice enhancement.

4. iBooks.

Apple's own eBook application is now on the iPhone so they can get over some Kindle book sales. Nothing major about this feature. Not exactly a feature, I would call it a new iPhone app by Apple.

5. Enterprise.

Multiple Exchange Accounts! Finally!! Along with Data Encryption using user PIN. Also SSL VPN and some other enhancements!

6. Game Center.

If you play games, this app allows you to connect with friends over the internet and other people for multiplayer games. This feature will be available by the end of the year.

7. iAd.

This is my favorite feature of the event. Apple is famous not for what their devices are capable of, but how they allow you to do those thing. iAds redefines mobile advertising. Its the most amazing creation in the field of advertising. It allows HTML5 ads within apps and are displayed as pop-over containers rather than in Safari.

Firmware Release Details:

Not for first gen. iPhone. iPhone 3GS and 3rd Gen iPod touch have all features. iPhone 3G and 2nd gen. iPod touch have most of the features except multi-tasking.

Firmware available to Developers. Release in Summer 2010. iPad version will release in Fall 2010.

Firmware 3.1.3 Released!

Apple has released firmware 3.1.3 for the iPhone and iPod touch with the following changes:

Improved accuracy of reported battery level on the iPhone 3GS
Resolves issue where third-party apps would not launch in some cases
Fixes a bug which may cause an app to crash when using the Japanese Kana keyboard.

iPhone Home Screen Concept

The iPhone had only 1 home screen initially, which later turned to 9 screens and now with firmware 3.0, Apple also added a Search screen (The first screen). However, Geoff Teehan has come up with a great concept of a Home screen that can be added after the Search screen. This can display a list of Unread SMS messages, Unread mail, Facebook messages, Weather, Stocks and what ever you wish.

This is a really great concept and I truly love it! I really hope it becomes true soon.

iPhone finally gets a Hotmail web app

iPhone has most E-mail service providers built-in with Mail.app and web apps also make E-mailing on the iPhone convenient. However, Hotmail was the only service that was not available on the iPhone (either by Mail.app or as a web app). However, finally Microsoft realized that they needed to make Hotmail available to the iPhone masses and have come up with the Hotmail web app for the iPhone.

To get the web app, just visit Hotmail.com from MobileSafari and there you have it! You can add the iPhone to home screen for faster access.

iTunes 9 and Firmware 3.1 Released

At the September 9th event, Apple released a new iPod Nano with a video cam, colorful shuffle iPods with upto 2GB of memory and reduced iPod prices. Besides the iPod announcements, Apple also introduced Ringtones for the iPhone which was anticipated by the blog in a previous post.

However, the major news is the release of iTunes 9 with an interface lift, Home Sharing, Improved Syncing and other features. And the Firmware 3.1 !

So, here are the details on what firmware 3.1 brings to your iPhone:

Display available account credits in the App Store and iTunes Store
Save video from Mail and MMS into the Camera Roll

NOTE: Exchange support might break for pre-iPhone 3GS (i.e. iPhone and iPhone 3G) as Policy Requirements for encryption reported.

iPhone Firmware 3.0.1 Released

Just before the September 9 event, Apple released Firmware 3.0.1 on iTunes. This update fixes the SMS Vulnerability found some time back.

To upgrade, just connect your iPhone to iTunes and hit Upgrade.

September 9th is the next Apple event and there's a lot of speculation going on about what to expect. For the iPhone users, here are things to expect:

Background apps for iPhone
Apple will finally be allowing AppStore apps to run in the background. However, this will come with a monthly price. Loopt (Social networking app) will be the first to offer it's app running in the background at $3.99/mo. along with your AT&T bill.

Official MMS Support for iPhone
Though firmware 3.0 has MMS capability, Apple and AT&T will be officially announcing MMS support for the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS. For iPhone 2G users, you can get MMS functionality via Cydia.

Ringtones for your iPhone
There have been hundreds of blog posts about how to convert an MP3 file to an iPhone ringtone, but now Apple might announce the avablity of iPhone ringtones from iTunes store. This will include all popular songs in form of ringtones for the iPhone.

So far, this is it. But I will update the post if something else comes up for the iPhone section.

These are more of software restrictions. Like the 1st gen iPhone can support MMS and Tethering, but Apple has disabled it to bring out more differences in the iPhones.

Yahoo! Inc. has just released their Instant messaging application (Yahoo! Messenger) in the AppStore. The application allows users to see online and offline friends and chat with them. Offline friends will get the messages when they go online. It also has the ability to chat with friends who are using Yahoo! messenger on their mobile phone using SMS.

Yahoo! Messenger is available as a FREE download in the AppStore.
