Meanwhile, the alternate reality game “The Jewel of the Valleys” has kicked off with the discovery of this bizarre document in the archives of the Museum.

The game, titled “The Jewel of the Valleys,” is being run in support of the fundraiser “In Their Footsteps: On the March in Pennsylvania,” which benefits the education department of the Museum.

The game will run the length of the fundraiser, in which the brave museum curator, Brett Kelley, will again choose to live the life of a Civil War soldier for two weeks. Last year, Brett chose to live outdoors as a Union soldier (and it coincided with two of the nastiest northeastern blizzards) last February. This year, Brett will be traveling as a Confederate soldier by foot from Fredericksburg, VA to Harrisburg.

The game will kick off with a “QR code” and web address being sent to educators and students around the country. The website will detail a dark and mysterious puzzle to be solved through the use of Civil War era communication technologies and authentic Civil War documents in the Museum’s archives.

Students may work collaboratively are on their own to follow the mystery. The ultimate objective of the game is to solve the mystery of “The Jewel of the Valleys.” The winner(s) of the game will be announced as Brett reaches the end of his journey- the Civil War Museum in Harrisburg.

The Civil War Augmented Reality Project (ACWAR) is my recent brainchild. I’m a high school history teacher and college history adjunct. The objective of the project is to effectively fund the development and implementation of augmented reality services related to the American Civil War in Pennsylvania. The project’s inception is planned to give ample development and publicity time in the run up to the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War, beginning in April 2011.
The project is also timed to take advantage of recent technological developments, and developments in the foreseeable future. The project’s heart will be a collection of points of interest regarding the Civil War in Pennsylvania, particularly related to Lee’s invasion of the north in 1863. This collection will be made available to the public through several “augmented reality” applications.

(from Wikipedia) Augmented reality (AR) is a term for a live direct or indirect view of a physical real-world environment whose elements are augmented by virtual computer-generated imagery… As a result, the technology functions by enhancing one’s current perception of reality… In the case of Augmented Reality, the augmentation is conventionally in real-time and in semantic context with environmental elements, such as sports scores on TV during a match. With the help of advanced AR technology (e.g. adding computer vision and object recognition) the information about the surrounding real world of the user becomes interactive and digitally usable. Artificial information about the environment and the objects in it can be stored and retrieved as an information layer on top of the real world view.

This Augmented Reality application will allow users with iPhones and Android devices (digital compass required) to view the relative locations of points of interest when holding their device in any particular direction. It is also possible to view 3D models and images projected on the landscape, and possible to track the arrival of users in particular locations. This tracking is quite useful in creating interactive contests, and can also be used to give rewards to the user (coupons, images and models that can

only be viewed after completing a task). If, for example, a user completes a task and is rewarded with the ability to view a 3D model, the user can snap a picture of the model with his or her device (even including his or herself in the picture). Users may also be able to unlock “secret” sites and collect images of them for bragging rights.

Everything described above is now possible, with development work. Layar and Junaio offer free applications for iPhone and Android devices that allow users to view points of interest in the real world using their phones, Layar itself have the ability to offer the “contest” or “scavenger hunt” activities to users. Foursquare and Gowalla offer free applications that allow users to “check-in” to locations for bragging rights and other rewards (i.e. a person who visits a coffee shop more than anyone else becomes the “mayor” of the shop, and receives free products).

The experience will surely improve in the near future. The advent of the iPad has driven tremendous public interest in tablet computers, but unfortunately, the iPad has no camera, a requirement for the AR experience. This shortfall by Apple is already leading to a mass development of tablet PC’s- driven by the chance to offer a better user experience and more capabilities than the iPad. This will be a boon for augmented reality in the near future, as the user experience will now take place on a much larger screen. This advance to more useful tablets will drive more interest in AR applications, but will also allow the ACWAR project to create portable AR devices to be rented to visitors to locations in PA, and to offer school children a chance to see Central Pennsylvania’s Civil War experience in a new, interactive, high interest way.

But what of the user who is unfamiliar with smartphones, tablets, or augmented reality?
The project proposes to construct stationary AR devices patterned after the “pay binoculars” often found at scenic overlooks. Rather than offering a view of the nearby scenery, the devices will offer a virtual geographic view from a few hundred yards above the user. Physically swiveling the viewer left and right changes the direction of the view in real time, just as swiveling up and down changes the view. The intuitive nature of the device is intended to invite “non-tech oriented” persons to try the experience, and learn more about the Civil War experience in PA. It is proposed that these stationary binoculars be set up at locations across the region, at major locations touched by fighting in the war: Greencastle, Mercersburg, Chambersburg, Shippensburg, Carlisle, Mechanicsburg, Harrisburg, York, Wrightsville, Columbia, Hanover, and Gettysburg. In order to give the user a sense of the historical and transportational interconnectedness of each location, a nearby screen will project realtime webcam images of people using the devices at other locations (audio communication also a possibility).

All of these applications will be linked to a central web hub, a place to offer information without the use of augmented reality. All of the 3D models (available in AR), information on the points of interest, and links to partner sites will be included. There will also be interactive maps showing the locations of points of interest, locations of the binoculars, etc.

These experiences are also intended to enhance educational experiences for young

people, and offer challenges and rewards for both young and old. The AR experience is not inherently passive. Users can “check in” at specific sites just by standing at the site. These visits can be tracked. Rewards can be offered for visiting sites multiple times, sites can be ordered to promote users to visit sites in order (encouraging visits to sites across the region), and scavenger hunts can be constructed, giving clues for users to move from site to site, and even unlock “secret” sites.

ACWAR could also meld seamlessly with the Pennsylvania Civil War Trails initiative:

The Pennsylvania Tourism Office has teamed up with Google Earth, Carnegie Mellon University, the National Civil War Museum, and BarkleyREI to offer 3D tours of Pennsylvania’s Civil War historic sites on Google Earth.

This project involves the production of high-resolution gigapan images —short for Gigapixel Panoramas —that will allow virtual tourists, students, and historians to examine Pennsylvania’s Civil War sites in breathtaking detail. Gigapan technology combines thousands of digital images to create a panoramic image of more than one billion pixels so users can virtually enter, explore, zoom in on details of interest, and even go back in time to witness the change of seasons on a historic Civil War battlefield, enabling more of a sensory experience than was ever before possible via imagery on the web.

Whereas the present plan implements high-interest Google Earth tours and panoramic photos, ACWAR would integrate real-world interactivity, and bring the story of Pennsylvania’s Civil War off of the web and into the public, outdoor sphere.

Why is ACWAR a good fit for Central Pennsylvania and the Civil War?

Central Pennsylvania is heavily populated with universities, colleges, museums, parks, and historical societies that would greatly benefit from ACWAR, particularly in the run-up to the Susquicentennial. However, their benefits would be greatly enhanced by a joint venture such as ACWAR. Candidates for partnership in ACWAR include:

What are the benefits of ACWAR over time?

Although the applications for the project will required development and design work, the technology is emerging, and ACWAR will be able to integrate open-source improvements over time.
If needed, ACWAR can be monetized. The Augmented Reality applications (or only segments of them) can be offered to users for a fee. Advertising can be integrated through sponsorship of sites or activities. Businesses could bid for the placement of one of the “binocular” installations in their business.
The AR experience will improve with faster processor speeds and more tablet offerings and capabilities.

In the interest of raising funds for the education department of the museum, specifically for helping school districts pay for field trips to the museum and to pay for “virtual” electronic field trips for K12 students, Brett will be living the life of a Civil War picket soldier for the duration of his vacation time. He’ll be living in the large (heavily exposed) backyard of the impressive museum, living on rations, wearing the clothes, eating the hardtack, living the life.

In order to duplicate the very challenging schedule and responsibilities of a picket soldier, he’ll be spending several days a week on picket duty (similar to “watch” in the Navy). He’ll also be carrying out several ten mile marches to raise awareness of the Museum, and building a small winter quarters and wooden defenses.

My students and I quickly saw the tremendous social media potential of this event (Survivorman + Man vs. Wild + Prairie House) and organized ourselves, with the help of the Museum, into a social media platoon.

Brett will be keeping a handwritten journal (with sketches) of his experiences, interns at the Museum will be snapping photos, and making videos. All of this will presented to the world through daily updates on a WordPress blog, on Twitter, on Facebook, and on YouTube. All of these accounts will be linked.

So, through subscribing to our blog:  Civil War Soldier 24/7, teachers and students will be able to follow his experiences from day to day. Like all parents, we spent quite a bit of time (and argument) coming up with names for our children. Our two year old son was easy, he was named after my father-in-law, which happened to also be a name common in my Pennsylvania Dutch family- Jacob. No sweat. When we found out my wife was pregnant nine months ago, we went through the process again. We found out that the baby was a girl, and my side of the family had nothing. Nothing that a 21st century parent would consider, that is. So we went ethnic. My wife is Danish, and we picked an old Danish name- Maren.

A lot of parents don’t, and didn’t, do it this way as evident from a recent blog post by the Wolfram|Alpha team. It was an inspiring post for me, and led me to do a few historical experiments that might be useful in an American History classroom. The post pointed out one of Wolfram’s neat features, the ability to graph and get statistics for the frequency of given names since 1890 in the United States. Their example highlights the male given name “Roosevelt.” As you can imagine, the number of lucky young fellows granted the name spiked during and following the presidencies of Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt (I was surprised to see that the Teddy spike was almost twice the size as the FDR spike). The cousin’s first names also show positive correlations.

So, what other interesting things could students do with this? It would be great for introducing new units, by trying out a few given names for key unit figures. We’re of course restricted to the period 1890 to about 2008, and it should be noted that the “spikes” I referring to are often really a very small percentage of all given names chosen by parents.

I’ve noticed both positive and negative correlations. If you stick to 20th century presidents without common given names, Dwight and Lyndon show positive correlations. Eisenhower’s name has a World War II spike, followed by a spike during and after his presidency. Ike, however, did not seem to catch on. Johnson has a short spike correlating with his VP candidacy in 1960, which was  greatly overshadowed by a spike during his re-election campaign (and the Civil Rights Acts) but then drastically falling during the mire of Vietnam.

What about first ladies? Jacqueline Kennedy and Hillary Clinton clearly win, with only slight bumps for Mamie Eisenhower, Florence Harding, Grace Coolidge, Lou Hoover. Pat Nixon (her real name was Thelma) and Eleanor Roosevelt fare better. Wolfram|Alpha is understandably confused by Lady Bird (Claudia) Johnson and Rosalynn Carter (Eleanor). Edith Roosevelt seems to have a positive correlation. More importantly her middle name, Kermit, also the name of her son who inherited Teddy’s sense of adventure, has an impressive spike and possibly a negative correlation during the heyday of a certain green frog puppet.

How about a few international leaders? No surprise- negative correlation for Adolph. I was very surprised by the effect of Winston Churchill on American parents.

Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X show positive results, with Malcolm showing a spike (no pun intended) around the release of Malcolm X in theatres.

More interesting results: old celebrities Errol Flynn and Rudolph Valentino and newer celebrities Angelina Jolie and Britney Spears.

So, in the interest of preparing for teaching a new course next year, and wanting to sort TED out a bit, I’ve created the following list based on disciplines (organizing knowledge or research by discipline is, it should be pointed out, in stark contrast to the real objective of TED Talks in general). I really like this TED fella, and I hope he doesn’t mind:)

At any rate, PLEASE PREVIEW THESE before showing them to students. These clips are intended for adults. I have seen most on my list, but couldn’t tell you in every case that I didn’t see or hear something that may be inappropriate for your classroom.

The data for this collection was taken from this Google Spreadsheet, which I received notice of in a tweet a few days ago. I have no idea who created the sheet, I’m certainly not taking the credit. I only searched through it and put together the following info. You should also know that this is not a complete list, there are many more TED Talks available on the web. Bionic Teaching has used the same sheet to create a great MIT Exhibit on, as far as I can tell, all of the TED Talks.

The interdisciplinary nature of TED (a direction I’d like to see education go in general) would allow many of these clips to cross several of my categories, so it may be useful for you to scan the lists of other disciplines. Enjoy!

I have the advantage of owning quite a few historical pieces, mostly due to the avid collecting of my father-in-law, and my chosen position of family archivist. What you may not be aware of is the number of students whose families are doing the same type of collecting. In fact, many of them may be in possession of items that living family members don’t even understand.

So, i decided to have a look at what’s out there among my students’ families. For the students who had nothing to offer, I simply allowed them to use artifacts or documents in my possession.

I already had a format for how to present the student work- a WordPress MU blog system I installed and administer for my school district. For more info on how that sort of thing is done, see these related WordPress posts: beginner, intermediate, and advanced.

The blog is also already used for my History and Technology Club (which I will explain in more detail in a later post), and so includes posts about club projects and tools.

So what sort of things did we come up with? I had students take digital pictures of their artifacts, and usually had them scan any documents. Most of the images and scans were then converted into “zoomable” web images, to allow the user to see the images in great detail without having to wait for large, high res images to load. Many of the documents include transcripts as part of the post written by students.

Here’s a sampling of the varied submissions (anything “old” or “antique” was accepted):

So what did students learn? First of all, they were genuinely excited about the fact that they were investigating items that few people had investigated before. Secondly, many of the items prompted very enlightening questions, like “How do I know this is not a fake?” or “How does this connect to a period, person, or place I learned about in history class?” or even “How much might this baby go for on Antiques Roadshow?”

Many of the posts enlightened the owners of the documents themselves, people who had held on to things important to their families, but had forgotten the historical context of the items. Nonetheless, we were all quite happy with the results. The blog itself won the local Regional High School Computer Fair for Curriculum Based Web Design, and the blog was one of the first times students at my school had done work that was actually made public on the internet. I’m sure to add more items to our little online museum next year, when I get new students (and new attics and basements for them to sort through!).

There is a growing movement among colleges and universities that is emphasizing the free availability of course materials. I find that many of my history and social studies colleagues are unaware of the expanding possibilities for a more in-depth investigation of their content.

It’s a bit more complex than your average search engine, so I’ll give you some examples of how it can be used in the History/Social Studies classroom. I’ll use a French Revolution bit of flavoring, since I’m up to my neck in it in class right now. You or your students can try out other content with the same search examples.

I got a little carried away with this, and it took a bit of time, probably due to the massive attempts at reaching Wolfram’s server.
