by Ronald Wooten

On Sunday, September 5, we had a fire in one of our orphanages in Kenya, the Hurma IPHC Children's Home, located in the Highlands conference. It houses almost 60 children and thankfully the whole group was in church when the fire began and no one was hurt. We are not sure of the cause of the fire yet, but the boy's dormitory was greatly damaged. The Police and the Fire Departments have investigated and they are still in the process of determining if it was an accident or vandalism.

We could really use some help! The boys have lost all of their beds, clothing, school books, and the building's roof must be replaced completely. If you would like to give toward the rebuilding and replenshing of the boys dorm at the Hurma IPHC Children's Home, please send your check, earmarked Eldoret Hurma Child Center #11576P, to IPHC WMM PO Box 270420 Oklahoma City, OK 73137.

The theme for this year was “Building the Church.” The focus is to develop people who will develop ministries to be functional in every local church. One ministry opportunity is a burning passion in my heart: seeing the preschool children reached and tought.
The strategy is to equip parents, family members, teachers, and youth to minister to this age group; first at home and then a preschool Sunday school class. Later, they develop a kids club, discipling and involving more parents in teaching activities. This training was presented in the central, northern, southern, and lakeside regions of Malawi.
Also, two special training efforts were presented to the unreached people group, the Yao, who live in areas around Lake Malawi. During classes, students accepted Christ. During outreaches to the Yao, in one group of 29 children, 21 received Christ.

During the southern Malawi Women’s Ministry conference, themed “Women of Faith,” women sought God in prayer, and were challenged to reach all preschoolers where they minister. They were given the opportunity to become the course coordinator, facilitating training in their area during 2010. They plan to invite all parents and youth 14 years and up to attend with the purpose of helping families gain more Biblical knowledge, communicating the Gospel to children, leading a child to Christ, counseling for salvation, and much more.
This is also a great opportunity to reach and impact orphans’ lives. The year 2010 will be devoted to this training and to develop national instructors for this course. Be in prayer for this ministry development and for passionate workers to arise.

His wife Dorothy and two daughters were with him at the time of his death. The funeral services are scheduled for Saturday at 2pm at the Swicegood Funeral Home in Danville, Virginia.

The Sowells were missionaries to South Africa and Zambia from 1967 - 1993. After 12 years of service in South Africa, they arrived in 1967 to a revival in Zambia. Wilmer Sowell understood the importance of training national leaders. He began the Theological Education by Extension program, and 85 students graduated by the end of his first term. He expanded his emphasis on training nationals to include the development of Sunday school and youth programs, and a Christian Education department for Zambia was formed in 1986.

Today, the Zambian conference is strong. Writing for The Simulatneous Principle in 2005, Dr. Frank Tunstall describes the impact of Wilmer Sowell's ministry teaching national leaders:

"It is apparent the Holy Spirit sent Wilmer Sowell to help consolidate the revival begun during the ministry of John Guthrie. Today, Zambia is a thriving national church with three conferences. In addition, the General Conference of Zambia has been organized to bring the conferences together. Nationals lead the work."

Please pray for his family during their time of grief.
