Google Voice: Sprint partnership announced

A significant announcement from Google today:

Google is partnering with Sprint to bring a seamless Google Voice integration to Sprint customers. Sprint customers can take advantage of the full set of Google Voice features without changing or porting their number, or opt to use their existing Google Voice number when making and receiving calls, without the need for an app.

Make sure you read the comments before changing anything! Some excellent points are made, not clearing out your web history being a case in point. Remember, add-ons like Location Bar pull data from your history.

Especially when it was launched I was asked why I didn't pay more attention to Google Wave. In short, I didn't see how it added value to my online experience and I found it too cumbersome to want find out.

It seems I was not alone. Citing adoption problems, the news that Google Wave is to be discontinued is hardly surprising.

From Google Operating System:

Google Wave had a lot of potential, but Google didn't manage to build a compelling user experience and define some use cases for the application. Instead of building a general-purpose interface for Google Wave, Google could've used the platform to create multiple applications with clearly-defined goals: a new version of Google Chat, a new version of Google Docs, a brainstorming app etc.

Make PDFs and Word docs searchable in Gmail

One of the drawbacks with using Gmail as a resume database is that you cannot search within attached PDF and Word docs. For small numbers of resumes there are a simple ways to overcome this using Google Docs. However, the problem is a real issue when uploading large numbers of resumes from your computer.

There is little to no point bulk uploading documents to Gmail if you cannot search for them later. The easiest way to deal with this is to convert them to a searchable format beforehand, either text or HTML formats.

There is no shortage of bulk converters out there. Many are free and do a passable job. I've tested a lot of free PDF2TXT and PDF2HTML converters. The ones that cost $200 plus may be worth every penny. That depends on what you need and how much money you have.

For converting PDFs to text PDFZilla is a great alternative to crappy free-stuff and overpriced who-knows-what-it-does software.

To date I have only paid for two products to support my googling. One is Gmail Keeper the other is PDFZilla. Both are, in my opinion, worth every penny. However, I could have got PDFZilla for free had I seen this before paying $29.95 for a license:

Zilla Word To Text Converter is free and handles the Word.doc problem. If you can get over the nag-page it makes a great compliment to round out this work around for Gmail's search-in-docs shortcoming.

The Recruiters Dashboard gets a makeover

In the upcoming weeks of training [see A G-Recruiter Primer: A Series of Starter Sessions and Become an Search Wizard: A Complete Guide to Online Sourcing for Recruiters] I'll be showcasing some new stuff using the Recruiters' Dashboard.

The dashboard set-up for downloading hasn't been updated since February. A makeover was long overdue anyway but with new users joining the ranks I wanted the latest and greatest version available for all.

There are new add-ons and the theme has been spruced up to make the whole thing, in my humble opinion, pretty damn slick! I've also tweaked some stuff on the back-end to speed things up.

The Files and Downloads page has been updated with the new files on the G-Recruiter.com site.

I've also updated the G-Recruiters' Bookmarks which have a ton of new stuff too.

How to unlock CAPTCHA on your Google account

Since Google made changes to its search engine results page recently it seems the frequency of it's CAPTCHA page blocking advance search queries has become a problem for a lot of people.

Glen Cathey who writes the Boolean Black Belt blog commented on CAPTCHA problems in What to do if Google Thinks You’re Not Human, Irina Shamaeva who runs the Boolean Strings Network complained about it in her post Dear Google, I Am Human, and friend Harry Joiner posted "WE'RE SORRY..." Why I'm switching to Bing on his Marketing Headhunter blog. CAPTCHA has even been topic of conversation on the G-Recruiters' Forum - see we're sorry hell posted by John Burzynski.

Problems unzipping the G-Recruiters' Dashboard? No more...

A few people have experienced problems unzipping the G-Recruiters' Dashboard. They either get locked up when extracting the files or they are asked for passwords for certain files. This typically happens when they are using a program like WinZip or WinRAR. I suspect I know what the problem is but I don't know how to fix it.

If you use the Windows default program to decompress the files it seems there are no problems. The majority of people follow the instructions and everything works fine. But if you hit a snag, the following is for you...

FEBE is a Firefox extension that allows you to backup your Firefox extensions and profile. In this two-part tutorial Adrai Richards explains how to backup and restore a Firefox profile.

Download the FEBE backup file for the G-Recruiters' Dashboard. You'll find it on the Files and Downloads page on the G-Recruiter.com site. Follow Adria's instructions and you should be good to go.

Google's mini-browser revisited: Google Deskbar

Google embodies the idea of "perpetual beta." While that has some advantages in the bigger scheme of things one of the disadvantages for users is that they become familiar and even reliant on services that are subsequently discontinued.

Google Notes is a recent example of this and from a couple of years ago, Google Deskbar. These once indispensable apps are no longer supported by Google the idea being that we all move along as Google evolves. But for some of us that plain sucks.

If you have downloaded the browser components of G-Recruiters' Dashboard you'll know that you can still access Google Notes and, if it suits you, incorporate it in your system. Now you can download Google Deskbar too.

Stay tuned for a more on some of the ways you can leverage Google Deskbar to your advantage. In the meantime, download it and discover for yourself some of the ways it adds to search experience.

Google Base's search page and blog mothballed

This from Robin Züger, Product Manager, Google Base:

"Google Base has its own search page for users to search across everything that's been uploaded, but it isn't widely used. Instead, people search on Google Product Search for products, or on Google Maps to find houses for rent or sale. Therefore, we're planning to retire Google Base's separate search page in a few weeks."

As Google Base gets rolled into the newly announced Google Merchant Center it may not be long before Google Base gets retired altogether, blog and all. We'll see.

Sidewiki: Google’s Newest Attempt to Make the Browser Social

"Google’s taking a stab at making web browsing social. And in classic Google fashion, it’s turning to algorithms to do it.

The company has announced and launched a new project, Google Sidewiki, a Firefox and Internet Explorer add-on (Chrome support is in the works) that adds a sidebar for commenting on websites across the web.

Users with the plug-in installed can add their own opinions to the discussion of specific web pages. While there are a range of products that already do this sort of thing, Google differentiates with its algorithm."
