Since I started my blog here at TheFreebieGuy.net, I’ve been able to expand my business significantly. I went from a Freebie Trader, to blogger, to Freebie Trading Forum owner. Not only that, but I have a number of things lurking behind the scenes (you should know that by now). Before you read this post, I want to make sure that you have read Part 1 of my Reality Check Series. If you haven’t done so as yet, STOP NOW, go and read it. . .

Ok, so now I know that you have read it, and I assume that you understand that you have to TAKE ACTION to start growing your online business (if you aren’t already doing so). The next question that many people have is “Where do I start?” Building an Internet business can be a very intimidating and overwhelming project. There’s so much information out there that its hard to grasp it all and do everything you want to do do. But here’s the good news (for some) – You’ve probably already found your money maker.

When I first started really making money, it was with Freebie Trading, something I never heard about before. The concept was interesting (and kinda odd to me at the time), there was a lot to learn, and I was excited. But here’s the key, I started doing it and I stuck with it and focused solely on Freebie Trading until I was comfortable with the amount of money that I was making.

I’ve seen many people do the same. However, I’ve seen many people start and give up before even trying and then move on to the next “fix”. Now, I’m not trying to convince you that Freebie Trading is the place for you to start. I’m just trying to show you what distinguishes those who become successful from those who don’t. It takes a certain level of determination to make something work.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of trying to do everything at once, but that’s a sure way to failure. Chances are, you’ve already found something that works. You know people who are doing the same thing and making a bunch of money and you know people who are doing the same thing and making NOTHING. The fact is that in every industry, you will find that same spread of people, and it’s up to you to make the decisions that will lead to your success with what it is that your doing.

So what I’m going to do is provide you with some tips that have helped me significantly in building my online business. This does not only apply to Freebie Trading. It applies to ANY business you can think of.

My 7 Tips

Tip #1: Make sure what you are into is not a scam. I wanted to mention this before anything else, because if you work hard at the wrong thing, the results can be absolutely horrifying. For some tips on how to detect a scam, read my article entitled How to know if a “Make Money Online” product is a scam.

Tip #2: Take your time! I know, I know, you’re excited. You found something that seems to work and you want to stack your bank account higher than the empire state building. Sounds great, but if you try to do it too fast, you are bound to make some mistakes that can affect you very negatively. There’s a lot to learn at each step, and by learning

Tip #3: Eliminate the unecessary and have laser-sharp focus. In other words, don’t try to do a bunch of things at the same time. Don’t start multiple programs and try to work them all. Work on ONE THING and ONE THING ALONE. Master the one thing you are working on and try to implement EVERYTHING it says. Once you are good at it, you can start thinking about adding more.

Tip #4: Find a mentor do whatever they say. No, I’m not talking about a good friend who wants to do the same thing you want to do. That’s not a mentor, that’s a buddy. I’m talking about someone who has been there and done that. Someone who is doing what you dream of doing. Someone you trust. Someone who’s ahead of the game. Because there’s so much information and misinformation out there, you want to make sure that you are eliminating the right things and perfecting the right skills. Having a mentor who can guide you is as essential as finding a great business opportunity.

Tip #5: Have a partner and hold each other accountable. It’s always a good idea to do this. The fact is that great mentors (especially when it comes to making money online) aren’t always available to bounce ideas around with. If they are successful, chances are that they are pretty busy, or pretty guarded (in terms of protecting their time). For that reason, it’s a great idea to have a like-minded friend who is trying to accomplish the same thing you are trying to accomplish. You can share ideas, strategies and get feedback on what you are both thinking.

Tip #6: Find ways to automate what you are doing. I don’t know about you, but one of my ultimate goals is to be able to make a good amount of money without doing a good amount of work. For this reason, I’ve tried to set up autoresponders to communicate with the people I work with, video tutorials to show people HOW to do certain things and other strategies to make things a bit more automated (and less time consuming). Your goal should be to be able to eliminate yourself from the picture (if necessary) and still have a running business.

Tip #7: Outsource what you can, when you can. This was one of the hardest things for me to learn, but once I did, I was utterly amazed. I learned that there are MANY people out there that can do things better than I can, and cost less than I thought. I always used to think that if you are using your own money to pay people, that means there will be less money available for you. Then I saw that by using your money wisely and outsourcing, you are leveraging the strengths of others, which can result in you making significantly more money.

I’ve been writing on this blog for just a little over a year now. This is my 174th post and it will be different than anything else I’ve written to this point. In fact, this week will be a “reality check week”. I hope that you don’t take offense to what I have to say, but I’m just going to lay it on you and hope that by doing so, you are motivated to doing something different than you might be doing now.

Please note: This MIGHT not apply to you (at least not fully), but if it does, please take my words to heart. This is going to be a long one, so be prepared to READ! If you can’t make it to the end of this article, you might want to ask yourself whether building an online business is for you.

The Honest Truth

Many of us Internet Marketers are in the business of selling dreams. The fact is, the more we can sell to you, the more money we will make. As a result of that, we invest a lot of time, energy and money to understand how to sell to you better. We test out various strategies, to see what works best and constantly work on optimizing what we are doing so that we can sell to you more and more. I know that some people are thinking (while reading this) that I shouldn’t say what I’m saying, but it’s the truth, and there’s a point that’s coming. So keep reading.

As a part of that process, many Internet Marketers resort to painting a picture of internet marketing that can be quite misleading (unfortunately). You hear how EASY it is to make money online and you think to yourself that you would LOVE to be doing what they are doing and make a bunch of money while sitting at home in your pajamas, traveling all over the world, spending a lot of time with your family or playing golf. Sounds Great, doesn’t it?

Then you purchase their training program, get started, make no money (or maybe a little bit of money) after putting in some effort, get discouraged and move on to the next dream seller. I’ve met a number of people in this type of situation and let me tell you . . . it can be really sucky. You can end up spending a lot of money on a bunch of crap, and not getting anything out of it.

The truth is this – Most people who try to make money online never end up making enough to be even a little satisfied. The reason for this is quite simple. It takes a LOT of work. I know, I know, it’s not what you want to hear, but it’s true.

I’ve been doing this for almost two years and let me tell you – I’ve had to work my butt off. I can remember some days in the past when I spent so much time on my laptop that I didn’t even feel as if I had enough time to leave and get something to eat. There was soo much to do, and not enough hours in the day. Since I work at a Private Boarding Academy, my “real job” is quite demanding. It’s not the typical 9 to 5. Sometimes I start as early as 7:15 am and on some days I finish as late as 9 or 10 pm, while trying to squeeze in some work related to my online business.

At some points in the past, I’ve thought about giving it all up. Even now, when things are better than they were in the past, I find myself with doubts as to whether all that I’m doing is worth it.

So the take home message is that it takes a lot of work to build a successful online business. Is that disappointing to you? Do you still want to do it? If so, then continue reading.

What makes it so difficult to understand

Ok, so we’ve established that it takes a lot of work to make money online. However, I want to talk a little more about why it’s so hard. We live in a time unlike any other. If there’s something you want to know, you jump online and google it and within seconds, you can answer just about any question you might have. If you want something quick to eat, you can run down to the local fast food place and get something within minutes, or pop a tv dinner in the microwave and have a full meal in 2 minutes.

If you are driving your car and the person in front of you is driving 55 mph in a 60 mph zone, the tendency is to try to get from behind that turtle and try to get behind someone that is going at least 65, because you are in a rush to get nowhere (or maybe it’s just me).

The fact is, we are conditioned to wanting things to happen in a super fast way, and when it comes to making money online, we expect the same thing. When I first started trying to make money online, that’s exactly what I expected. I wanted to find a quick way to get rich and trust me, that got me nowhere.

The good news

Ok, ok, I can only be that harsh for a portion of this post. Otherwise, there would be absolutely no point to it. So here’s the good news. It takes a LOT of work, but it’s SOOOOooo worth it. Really, it is. The reason I say that is because if you follow the right steps, it gets easier with time. It’s very possible to set up an online business and have it eventually running on autopilot. All of the work you do in the beginning sets a foundation for what can be a business that can exceed your wildest expectations.

The reason for this post is that I wanted to tell you to WAKE UP. If you want to build an online business, realize that it will take hard work and determination to get to where you want to reach. If you are willing to put in the work, you will reap the rewards. That doesn’t mean that EVERYTHING you do will be a success, but even when things don’t pan out in the way you thought it would, there are some valuable lessons that you will learn that will help you build an even better business later on.

Take Action

There is one important thing that is essential to your success and that is that you have to Take Action. People say that “Knowledge is Power”. I disagree with that statement. My statement goes more like this: “The Application of Knowledge is power”. Knowing how to make money online is only as good as the action you take. Understanding Freebie Trading, Affiliate Marketing and Professional Blogging (as examples) is great. However, unless you Take Action on what you know, you will be no more successful than the person who doesn’t understand how the systems.

Where you start is up to you, but if you don’t start somewhere, you will never accomplish your goals. So, if you are tired of your current financial situation, I would encourage you to GET OFF YOUR LAZY BUTT AND DO SOMETHING (sorry again for the harsh language, lol). REALLY THOUGH, TAKE ACTION! A great place to start would be Freebie Trading. However, wherever you decide to start, JUST START!!

There is something that I’ve learned that’s contrary to what I used to think. I’ve been dabbling in website design for a while now, ever since I took a Computer Tools class in college in 1998. I loved that class so much that when we got into website design, I took every project and did 10 times more than I had to do for the actual assignment. I guess it’s because I enjoyed it so much.

However, I would venture to say that my web design abilities have affected me in a negative way (for a while) when it comes to Internet Marketing. The “unofficial rules” that I had in my mind as to what makes a website convert better (in terms of getting people to sign up) were just absolutely ripped apart and thrown out the window. I had to learn some lessons that just didn’t seem to make sense to me at the time, but now I’ve come to see why it makes absolute sense.

Because I like it doesn’t mean it’s good

I know it sounds crazy, and it sounded crazy to me too. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), the world doesn’t always think like I do, and just because I think it’s effective, doesn’t mean that it is. This is how I realized that this was true . . .

Whenever I design a website, I try to make sure that it meets my standards. I’m satisfied when I look at the website and it just looks GOOD. The kind of design that you look at and say, “MAN, that guy is a great designer”. Then I looked around and saw people who were making a butload of money (significantly more than I was making) and looked at some of their landing pages and I was absolutely appalled. The design was often times crappy (in my opinion) and so simple that I was almost insulted. Why were they making more money than I was and they couldn’t even design as well as I could?

I am NOT my audience

If I could make money from myself, that would be great. Unfortunately, I won’t make one cent from selling myself a great idea, because if I think it’s a great idea, I already bought into it AND paying myself with my own money doesn’t make me any richer. That being said, if I am trying to build a business (online or off), I need to cater to the people who I’m targeting.

As much as I would like my website to look good to me, it really doesn’t matter what I think and if I want it to be effective, I need to optimize it to my audience. How do I accomplish that? It’s quite simple (at least in concept). I need to set up my landing page based on the feedback I receive.

The Google Website Optimizer

Google is an amazing company. The stuff they provide for free is many times better than  other companies charge a significant amount for. The Google Website Optimizer is a perfect example of one such service. It allows you to make changes to your website (or in this case – landing page) based on feedback you receive from visitors to your site, without them even knowing that you are doing it. This is how it works.

With the Google Website Optimizer, you can set up experiments to test out different elements of your landing page. For example, you can test out two different headlines to see which is more effective. What website optimizer will do is display the first headline to half of your visitors and the second headline to the other half of your visitors. It will then calculate the conversion rate of each and allow you to determine if the change in headline makes a difference in conversion rate.

Using the same principle, you can test many different aspects of your landing page like font sizes and color, background color, with video or without video, with your opt in box to the right as opposed to beneath the info. My recommendation would be to focus on one aspect at a time. For example, try out different headlines until you find the one that works best. Then you can go with testing font sizes and so on and so forth.

By doing this, you are no longer guessing as to what works well and what doesn’t. You are forming conclusions based on the data you are collecting and the data doesn’t lie. You might be surprised at what ends up being effective, like I was.

Technical Aspects

Yes, you do need some technical expertise in order to do this effectively. The Google Website Optimizer provides you with a code to insert into the html of the pages you are testing to allow it to work. However, there are tutorials that show exactly HOW to do it. If that’s beyond your technical abilities, I would recommend hiring someone to do it. You can use a Freelance site such as Scriptlance, Guru.com, or getafreelancer to find someone to do it for you for a very low cost.

So I would recommend signing up at Google Website Optimizer and checking it out today. It can make the difference between your website as it is now and the one that’s gonna make you a ton of cash in the future

Last week was a very hectic week for me. Probably one of the most hectic ones since the school year started. I assume that most of you know that I’m a High School Science and Math teacher. Well this weekend was our alumni weekend and let me tell you this – I’m Ecstatic that last week is over.

As I began the weekend rejoicing, I realized something. I say that this blog is about YOU (which it really is), but for some reason I never asked you what YOU want me to blog about. I’ve realized that the more you get into Internet Marketing, the better you become at doing. Now, this is a great thing, but there’s one “side-effect” that is often overlooked. Sometimes things get so easy that they are second nature, and you tend to not think of some basic things that people who are new to making money online struggle with.

I want to help you succeed in your online business. I’ve learned a lot in the time I’ve spent building my online business and the truth is that I keep learning more things every day. There is so much information out there on how to make money online. What you will realize as you continue studying is that there are some people who know what they are talking about and some people who don’t. The truth is, I do some of this type of promotion. However, I’m VERY selective in what I choose to promote. I know bloggers who promote any and everything just so that they can make more and more money. However, I try only to promote things that I know FOR A FACT can help you be more successful in your online business.

I told you not to read it, but you just had to do it. Whatever happens as a result is not my fault, lol.

Do you ever doubt yourself? Do you ever feel as if you cannot succeed? Do you ever feel as if no matter what you do, you will result in failure? Do you ever get depressed?

If you have blood running through your veins, I’m sure that you have experienced some of those things. What I’m about to share with you is not something I’m proud of, but it IS something that illustrates a point. I can remember a day, back in college, when things weren’t going well for me at all. I didn’t really have money to pay my bills, because I had made some stupid decisions (which I will save for another post). I was having a rough time, and I was depressed. It seemed as if everything was just going terribly wrong.

I remember my lowest point during that time-period. I was driving my little “93 Ford Escort, focusing on how Sucky my life was. You know . . . the pity party that we throw ourselves every so often. In my mind everything was just going wrong. There was snow and ice on the road and I lost control. It was as if it was slow motion. I could see myself going off the road and I remember thinking to myself “Well this makes sense since my life sucked!” (I know, I know, it sounds depressing, but this is what was happening, so I’m just being real). What made the entire situation much worse was the fact that all of my roommates (except for my brother) were also depressed.

Well one day, this all changed. One of my roommates had a bright idea. He had the answer to our depression problem, and it was fairly “simple”. Are you ready for this one? Ok, here goes. The simple step we had to take in order for everything to get much better was that we all needed to climb on top of the roof, and then jump off. Yes, that’s what I said. If we jumped off the roof, all of our problems would be solved and the world would be a better place.

What was surprising about this was not that it was even mentioned. The surprising part was that for some strange reason, it made sense to all of us roommates. Now bare with me. There’s a point coming . . .

So off we went. All 4 of us (including my brother who wasn’t depressed). We climbed to the top and jumped off one at a time. Can you guess what happened afterward? WE WERE NO LONGER DEPRESSED! Well, my brother sprained his angle and wasn’t too happy, but the point is that we were no longer depressed!

So What does that have to do with making money

That’s a very good question, and my answer is very simple. You see, the action of jumping off the roof had nothing therapeutic to it. However, there was a mindset change that happened that made all the difference. I had attributed no longer being depressed to an action, but it was all in my mind.
The same way I was holding myself back from being happy, it’s just as easy to hold yourself back from being successful. The more I speak to people who are extremely successful online, the more I see that their success didn’t start by what they did. It began with a change in mindset.

Do you see yourself as someone who will be an online success? Do you see yourself as who you want to be? Or are you filled with doubts about your ability, whether you can learn everything that needs to be learned, or whether you possess the skill to be a successful entrepreneur? If you have these doubts, I need for you to do me a favor. NO, do NOT jump off the roof. That’s just DUMB! However, I want you to do the mindset-equivalent. Take a leap of faith. Believe in yourself, because if you don’t, nobody will.

I Believe in you

The unfortunate fact is that most of the people who attempt to make money online will never reach a point of online success that they are comfortable with. However, that does NOT have to be you! I TRULY believe that if YOU put YOUR mind to it, you can accomplish some amazing things. Change your mindset and believe in yourself. Then do whatever it takes for you to reach your goals.

In my previous post I wrote about How to build an effective Squeeze Page. This can be a daunting task. You have to think about the copy AND the design, both of which can be a challenge separately. So I wanted to try to make it a little easier on you by providing you with some FREE squeeze page templates that you can use. If you are not sure about HOW to use them, I would recommend getting someone that is familiar with HTML to edit it for you.
