Graduation Ball

I finished my final university exams a week and a half ago, and last Friday it was our Graduation Ball. I'm not actually technically graduating until October (that's if I pass even!) because the usual July ceremony has had to be pushed back because London will be too busy with the Olympics. So it was nice to have the ball to round things off and get to see everyone before we all part ways for summer (and the real world!)

My dress is from H&M. I bought it in France on my year abroad even though I had no occasion to wear it, just because I loved it so much. I wore it last November to a wedding, and I guess it is quite an autumn-y colour, but I wanted to wear it again for the ball. I think there's too much of a "you can only wear something special once" attitude, particularly with fashion blogging, as you're so aware of who has already seen things, and I'm trying to break that habit and wear my favourite dresses more. I actually bought the dress a size larger than I'd usually wear (because they didn't have it in the right size!) but I think it works with the jersey fabric and drapeyness. My shoes are actually a pair I've had since I was fifteen, which is quite a while ago now! They're from Marks and Spencer and have held up amazing well considering they're almost 7 years old!

With the ball and the wedding I went to the weekend before that, I'm getting quite into this getting dressed up thing! If anyone wants to invite me to any posh events so I can carry on, that would be much appreciated :P

Recently, when trying to find a pair of shoes to wear to a wedding, I found myself searching through dozens of different websites in search of the perfect pair (and this was after an exhausting and ultimately fruitless afternoon in a shopping centre!). Almost as frustrating as not being able to find anything suitable for hours was the fact that I kept having to go to different websites and navigate loads of different layouts to get to the footwear section, only to be disappointed. Although I did manage to find something in the end (which are being returned as they failed to hold up through even one day without scuffing!), I really wish I’d known about Viva La Diva before I embarked on my mega shoe mission.

Simply Yours is the underwear brand from plus size clothing brand Simply Be. I know you’re probably thinking “why is she writing about this when she’s not plus size?” but bear with me. As many of you are probably aware, underwear, and underwear sizing, is one of those things that can be almost completely unrelated to clothing size. Simply Yours doesn’t only cater for women who wear a larger clothing size, it is brilliant for those of us who require a larger bra size.

I personally have a lot of difficulty finding bras that fit. I have a concave ribcage, and as such my back size is smaller than it should be, leaving me with the problem of having a relatively large cup size compared to my back size, something which isn’t catered for in the vast majority of stores. I’m usually restricted to a very limited range of options, which is annoying, as I want the choice of pretty underwear that everyone else gets.

This is what I wore on Friday for my FINAL EXAM EVER ARGH! I have now finished uni forever and it feels so strange!
Then for the weekend I was down in Brighton for my boyfriend's uncle's wedding on Saturday, which was a great day, and I've come back up to London this afternoon after spending a morning eating ice cream in the sunshine and walking along the beach and pier. A lovely way to wind down after exams!

I forgot to take any pictures of what I wore to the wedding, but I really liked the outfit, as it included the 18 and East dress I'd been after, so I might put it back on tomorrow and take some pictures for a blog post.

I got my hair cut pretty darn short this time, my hairdresser even used clippers to neaten up the back! (That bit was a bit scary, but I didn't end up with any bald patches, phew!)

I'm not going to post every single time I change my hair (which is quite often as you can see in my hair history post!) but this is quite a big change, even though it was "short hair" before. I'm hoping that if I start out with it really short, it won't grow into an unmanageable birds nest by the time six weeks have passed and I'm due another haircut!

This is what I wore for bumming about the house yesterday tidying/revising. This jumper is so comfy, it's got the perfect amount of slouchiness. I thought I'd pair it with some other bright white accessories, my new slightly blingy Sekonda watch and these amazing high tops from River Island. They have a hidden wedge which I love - they still look really casual but add height and give you that good posture heels do.

I swear my hair didn't look that poofy in the mirror before I took these pictures. My hair always looks total crap on my blog and I swear it's better in real life! I am going for a haircut today though as it's getting a bit long and I'm going to a wedding next weekend so I'd best try to look presentable!

Hello hello!

As you know, I've been getting more into make up and YouTube videos recently, (but fear not, I'm still mostly about the fashion blogging!) so I was super excited when Beauty at Tesco offered to send me the Diego Dalla Palma palette inspired by the new film Snow White and the Huntsman and asked me to come up with two make up looks with it. One Snow White look, one Evil Queen look.
This is what the palette looks like:

The palette contains six eye shadows (three metallic and three matte/satin), a red lipstick and a black eyeliner pencil. My favourite bit of it is the eyeliner, it's really soft and smudgy and very easy to use and make look good. The palette is £25 (apparently containing worth of products) and is available exclusively here from Tesco.

After spending aaages faffing about with it and being really indecisive, then leaving it at the wrong house for a few weeks, I've finally gotten around to creating the final looks, filming tutorial videos and taking some pictures! The looks are inspired partly by the make up in the trainler for the film, but are partly my own ideas too.
Here are my looks, Snow White, and Evil Queen.

Dance Dance Dance

Long term readers and blogger friends know that as well as fashion and blogging and all that jazz, one of my biggest loves is dance, and that I'm an active member of my university's Dance Society. Quite a few people have expressed an interest in that, so I thought I'd do a post about it. If dance really isn't your thing, feel free to skip this post.

Every year we have a big show, choreographed by students, and this year was my second time choreographing a piece. My main styles of dance are Latin and Ballroom, and in second year I was Latin and Ballroom Officer on the society committee and choreographed the Latin piece for the show. This year I choreoed again, and the theme of the show was "Once Upon A Time", so I put together a charleston and jive-based Pinocchio piece called "I've Got No Strings".

(Unfortunately the timing of the audio is a bit off with the dancing, but only a fraction so it's still watchable. See if you can spot me!)
My friend Dan is probably going to kill me for putting this online, as he's a bit embarrassed about his cameo as the Blue Fairy, but I think he did an amazing job, don't you?

I was in some other amazing pieces in the show too, we have some really talented dancers and choreographers at my uni.
This one is called "Forever Young and Dancing" and is based on the Lost Boys from Peter Pan.

I loved the costume for this piece. With all the green and leafiness I felt like a woodland pixie or something like that.

My friend Sophie, who is an incredible dancer, is this year's Ballroom and Latin officer and choreographed this INCREDIBLE ballroom number. Called "The Glass Slipper" it's based on Cinderella. The clock strikes 12 and she tries to leave the ball, but gets caught up in a quickstep and can't escape!

This is my very favourite dance I've ever been in. The costumes were incredible, we hired real Strictly-worthy competition dresses and the boys wore tailcoats.

I was also in the Burlesque piece, but I'm not going to put a video of me dancing in not much more than underwear on my blog! :p

Met Gala 2012 - Best Dressed, Worst Dressed, Fancy Dressed!

Ok, so a) I never do "celeb" posts like this and b) this is wayyyy late in terms of red carpet coverage as the Costume Institute Gala aka Met Ball was aeons ago now (well, four days,but that is a long time in fashion land it would seem) but SOD IT I say, I had an urge to give my two cents on what people were wearing and it's my blog and I can do what I like *thumb to nose waggle-y fingers face* (Also, Kirsty from Forty Four Sunsets always does great, funny red carpet round-ups, and I wanted to have a go too. Not that mine will be anywhere near as good as hers are.)

So, without further ado...

Best Dressed

Emma Stone in Lanvin with Alber Elbaz
Look how adorable Emma looks! I am super jealous of how she can pull off that bright red dress with red hair and really pale skin. Red looks pretty appalling on me at the best of times, making me look crazily pink, and was even more of a no-no when I had orange-y hair. Also, isn't the picture of her and Alber not just the cutest thing you ever did see? He's like a human cartoon character.

Shouldn't work but it does and I love it

Lana Del Rey in Altuzarra - At first I was like "wtf why are you wearing a cape you silly fool, you look like Gandalf", but then I was like "actually what am I saying, this is amazing and Gandalf is my new fashion icon!" The dress on its own, sparkly pretty as it is, would probably be a bit blah, but whack on a cape and now you're talking. From this somewhat nonsensical rambling you're currently reading, I'm sure it's pretty clear that I can't put my finger on exactly why I like this look so much, but I do, so that's that.

Scarlett Johansson in Dolce & Gabbana - Firstly, let me say that I never used to like Scarlett Johansson AT ALL. I think it's because I really dislike that overtly booby sexy thing (which is why I really don't rate Eva Mendes either.) And I HATED her in Iron Man 2, and was kinda pissed off she was going to be in the Avengers. But then recently she's grown on me. And I saw the Avengers (it was awesome, and I refuse to call it Avengers Assemble because that is a rubbish title) and she was great in it, and then she goes and wears this to the Met Gala. It really shouldn't work, with all that tulle poking out, almost like there's another dress under there, being smothered by the tight beadiness on top, but it just does. It looks brilliant and really suits Scarlett. I like her bed head hairdo too,

*Yawn* - Most boringly dressed

Jessica Alba in Michael Kors - Don't get me wrong, this is a nice dress, but the Grecian look is SO safe and predictable that it's totally boring me. Thumbs down.

Dree Hemingway in Topshop (with Sir Philip Green, natch) - Topshop? No, you don't say. I'd never have guessed! C'mon Phil, if you want to try and prove that Toppers can stand its ground against the big boys of fashion design, don't turn up with a date looking like this. It is so obviously highstreet it's almost painful to look at in the same image gallery as all the amazing designer dresses. The weird thing is, Topshop can do some amazing looking frocks that look far more expensive than this (quite frankly bizarre) dress. Why not wear one of those?

Worst Dressed

Kristen Stewart in Balenciaga - Normally K Stew's "I'm bored as f**k" face is enough to ruin the best of dresses (seriously, if you hate your life so much, just sod off and leave us all in peace) but I think I'd look pretty unhappy if I was dressed in this. The blue section cuts her off at the widest part, making her look out of proportion, it's a weird length and seems to hang strangely. Also, those shoes are pretty grim. But still, she could at least try and crack a smile. Her lips are actually turned DOWNWARDS for goodness' sakes!

SJP in Valentino - This is too easy to tear holes in, so easy I wasn't going to include it. But then I saw the woman in the top left hand of the picture and it had to be blogged.

My first Take 10 challenge!

So if you read a lot of blogs you may already be familiar with Take 10. If not, let me quickly explain. Each month (or thereabouts), 10 different bloggers get sent the same item, or similar items, to style up in their own way, then they post their outfits all together, so you can all see how one piece of clothing can fit into lots of very different personal styles.

This month I was thrilled to be asked to become the newest member of the Take 10 group, so here's my first challenge.
I was given a skirt from the H! by Henry Holland range at Debenhams, which has a short, blue polka dot mini part, with a long sheer black overlay. Here's what I did with it.

Playing dress up with eBay Fashion Outlet

Last week I took a break from revision and headed along to the eBay Fashion Outlet bloggers event to take a look at their new Spring/Summer range. I love eBay, I'm a bit of an addict, but bidding can be frustrating especially when you get outbid at the very last second for an item you've set your heart on. eBay Fashion Outlet takes that frustration out of the pictured. It's basically like a normal online shop, but offers a wide range of brands, and everything is discounted (hence the "outlet" part.)

Anyhow, the event itself was so much fun. We were invited to rummage through the clothes and accessories - some of them one-off vintage pieces the Fashion team had sourced from the "normal" eBay site - and style up an outfit. There was a model on hand for those who were a bit shy/had picked out teeny sample sized pieces, but a lot of bloggers (myself included) decided to style themselves. Then we had pictures taken by a professional photographer. I must say, I haven't really got the "posing for photos" thing down yet, despite having been blogging for such a long time, and the vast majority of my pictures looked extremely awkward. I need to practise smiling in a mirror! Here are the best of the bunch:

I saw the jumper - which is from Joe Browns - hanging on the rail of clothes and immediately pounced on it. It proved to be one of the most popular pieces there in the end. Then I saw the white jeans and thought I'd try a head-to-toe white outfit, the complete opposite of my usual uniform of all black! It was fun to see the same pieces being used in completely different outfits that showed each blogger's individual style, you can the rest of the outfits here.

As well as getting to play with clothes, (and eat yummy food and drink lots of free champagne!), it was lovely to meet some new bloggers, including Fleur (who has written a post about the event with some great behind the scenes pictures here), Sarah, Natalie and another Sarah (it turns out we've been at the same events for ages now but never actually met!)

What do you think of my all white outfit? I'm not sure if it's something I'd wear in real life where I'm sure I'd get grubby in less than 5 minutes, but it was fun to play dress-up in!

Ok, ok, it's not technically May yet, but it seems a bit silly to call this an April wishlist as there are only a couple of days of the month left. Here's what I'm lusting after at the moment!

18 AND EAST dress from JOY - I love the print on this dress and the lace trim on the bottom is really cute. I'm considering getting it to wear to a wedding at the end of May but I'm not sure if it's suitable because it's white, even though it's got a lot of blue on it too. What do you think, would it be ok to wear? Help!

Topshop vest - £26 is kind of expensive for a vest, but this is really lovely. I've tried it in store and the fit was great, drape-y but still quite smart for a plain top as the material has a heavy silk-y feel. Still it is 100% polyester, so I'm not convinced it's worth the money. It would be very versatile though as it could be dressed up or down and would be office appropriate too.

Topshop dress - I've tried this on too and it's beautiful but pretty much see through. I was considering it for my graduation ball but even with nude underwear I'm not convinced it wouldn't still look like I was nekkid!

MAC eyeshadow in Blackberry - This is a really lovely muted purple/brown/grey shade. I think it would be lovely to add a bit more colour to neutral eyeshadow looks. I'm not really keen on paying the £10 that MAC eyeshadow pans now cost though, so I'm going to look out for a dupe and only get the MAC if I can't find one. Well, I say that, I'll probably have given in and bought it by this time next week!

Topshop "Game" shoes - I'm finding myself more and more attracted to snakeskin things recently. My friend Lindsey has these shoes and I love them. I would probably try and steal them from her if only her feet weren't smaller than mine! At £48 they're a good price too (especially for Topshop!)

So, that's my wishlist! A bit Topshop heavy this month. I don't normally shop there because it's expensive for what it is, and I also rarely see anything that screams "buy me". For the sake of my bank balance I hope this month is a one-off!

What I wore to uni today. My feet got more than a little wet in the loafers! Like everyone else, I really wish the weather would warm up and it would stop raining so I could wear more spring-y clothes! Saying that, I do love these stars and moons trousers. The top says "spellbound", so I thought it went well with them. I'm also back to wearing my macrame skull bracelets every day (you can just about see them in the pic above). They were about £2 each from eBay, total bargain.

It's exam term now and as I'm in final year now, I have to get serious about revision, so posting around here will probably be sporadic at best for the next month and a half. After that though, I have a ton of ideas for things I want to blog and vlog about, so please bear with me and stick around until then.

This bracelet/ring thing was on my wishlist a couple of months ago and I finally got around to buying it. It was a bargain at just over £3. Then I saw these eye nails by Vicky from #Golly Gosh and had to have a go myself.

Eye jewellery is believed in many cultures to ward off the evil eye. One of my best friends comes from a Turkish background, and told me that if your jewellery breaks, it means it has done its job and stopped someone from doing harm to you. Hopefully no-one wants to do anything bad to me, as I'd like my bracelet to last for as long as possible!

This skirt had been lying around half-made for months and today I finally finished it off. It's not even that it was difficult to do, I just seem to end up with so many half-finished DIY projects. I can't wait to finish uni so that I can do more DIYs (and other fun stuff) in my free time, rather than reading books for my degree or writing essays (or feeling guilty for not doing those things!)
It's really simple, just a long rectangle of sheer fabric with the ends sewn together, hemmed and with an elastic waistband. I think it looks really good though, and can be dressed up or down.
This is how I've worn it out this evening for a friend's birthday meal.

4 quid pin-up inspired make up tutorial

You seemed to like my first attempt at a make up tutorial I posted a few weeks ago, so I thought I'd have another go. This time I've done a 1950s pin up inspired look for only £4(!) using MUA cosmetics which are all only £1 each.
I'm not claiming to be an expert or a make up artist or anyone, I just like playing around and creating different looks, so I thought it would be fun to film a few.

I forgot to take a picture of the finished look like you all suggested after the last video (sorry, I have a total sieve brain!) but you can see the finished look within the first few seconds of the video, so you can decide from that whether to watch it all or not.

I'm loving my new mullet dress from Missguided. When this short-at-the-front-long-at-the-back style first started popping up, I wasn't sure about it, but now I'm glad I decided to give it a go. I can see myself wearing this all summer long, it's so comfy and casual, yet has that interesting twist to it.

What do you think about the "mullet" style? Is it something you'd wear?

Hairstory

So, I changed my hair again. As this is quite a frequent occurrence, I thought it would be fun to do a little ~~hair history~~ hairstory post looking back at the different hairstyles I've had over the four-and-a-half years or so that I've been writing this blog. Of course, I want this to be a bit of a laugh, and not an exercise in narcissism, so I've chosen as many not-so-flattering Facebook photos as possible. Enjoy my weird face (and hair)!

Wavy and chocolate brown, straight and purple-y brown, long brown extensions, crazy "natural" blonde, long bleached blonde, faux 1920s bob, blunt bleached bob, pastel pink bits, weird faded pink-y red, pink-y blonde (the crappy pink-red took forever to get out!), midlength and red, long red extensions, long orange extensions, short asymmetric orange...

My latest hair style...

I was getting more than a little fed up of the asymmetric cut, as it needed cutting too often to keep it looking non-crazy, so I just decided to have it all cut off short. I'm actually going to have a bit more taken off the length as without styling it looks a bit "mom hair" and I want it a bit more choppy and Agyness Deyn-y. I've also used an ash blonde dye on it to try and get it less orange-y, but it's a work in progress as you can see!

Oh, and I didn't pay for this hair cut. I decided after last time that I'd be happy to be a hair model again, and so went searching on Gumtree and ended up getting my hair cut by a lovely trainee called Harry at Mahogany hair in Mayfair. If anyone is a bit worried about being a hair model, don't be. They ask you what you want and the trainees are supervised every step of the way by a senior stylist. You aren't going to end up with half your head shaved or a mullet (unless that's the look you're after!) Even super posh salons need models for training (the ones I've been to were both really swanky!), so you can get a free haircut in a place where it would normally cost you £££! (But leaving a tip is a nice thing to do.)

This is why I've not been blogging and won't be again for a few days:

It's my uni's annual dance show this week, as as I'm both performing and choreographing, it's left me with no time in between rehearsals and uni work to blog.
I'll be back next week after I've slept for the whole weekend to recover!

A recent outfit for uni. The thing on my leg is because I've managed to somehow make an old knee injury flare up (long time readers will have seen me in a knee support before) and it's pretty painful at the moment. The bandage does help a fair bit though. A word to anyone who ever experiences any kind of joint pain - go and get it checked out straight away! I didn't when I first damaged my knee, or this time when it started to hurt again and I've just made it worse for myself in the long run. Off to the doctor's with you, shoo!
