20 injured in Silver Lake bus accident *

An accident tonight involving an MTA bus on Glendale Boulevard at the 2 Freeway left about 20 people injured, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Most of the injuries were minor but LAFD spokeswoman Diana Igawa said that two people are in critical condition. The accident. which was reported at about 6:30 PM on the border of Silver Lake and Echo Park, involved a bus and two vehicles, Igawa said.

Glendale Boulevard is closed down in the area, reports the LAPD Central Traffic Bureau. Resident reports on Twitter say that traffic is jammed on Glendale Boulevard and surrounding streets.

"The bus seemed to have been on fire for a time, the whole front crushed and burnt ... victims sitting on the median and the side of the road," said one person who left a comment on this post. "Pretty wild."

* Update @ 10:06 PM: Southbound Glendale Boulevard at the 2 Freeway was still closed shortly before 10 PM as crews prepared to tow away the bus. Initial reports located the accident north of the freeway but the collision apparently took place south of the 2 Freeway. LA Now reports the MTA 92 bus was headed northbound when the accident occurred.

Police capture suspect in Highland Park stabbing and Glassell Park shooting

The LAPD has made arrests in connection with two separate incidents involving a deadly knife-fight in Highland Park and a shooting in Glassell Park in which a car carrying several children was hit by gunfire.

Officers arrested a man today suspected of being involved in a weekend knife fight that left two Highland Park men dead in the 100 block of East Avenue 45, said Northeast Division Capt. Bill Murphy in an email newsletter. Murphy also said that the victim of a separate Highland Park stabbing "is still in extremely critical condition and may not survive." The victim was knifed by a man at a taco stand in a dispute believed to be over a woman, Murphy said.

Police on Friday arrested a man suspected of firing a bullet into a car carrying several children on Drew Street in Glassell Park, Murphy said in his email.

"A mother who was driving a vehicle with several children in it felt something hit her car. She examined the car and observed a bullet hit. She called the police and several officers responded quickly. They sealed the area off and using good police techniques, identified the suspect involved in the incident and arrested him. Four other suspects were arrested for other crimes (probation violations, etc..)."

A Wednesday night march in Silver Lake in support of gay marriage will find the LAPD sending out text messages as well as officers to keep things under control. The department will be texting mobile phone users with information about road closures and the location of Bury Prop 8 marchers as part of a test of a secure instant message system operated by a start up company called Nixle.

Northeast Division Capt. Bill Murphy said the test on Wednesday night will be the first for his division, which includes Silver Lake. "It gives us the opportunity to give out brief updates on the march, direction of travel, is it peaceful, anticipated arrivals, simple basic info the public might want to know," said Murphy. "It could be used for upcoming major events - parades, or say significant incidents - a fire at Griffith Park. Hopefully, it works well and we use it regularly."

Murphy, who announced the test in an email newsletter today, said anyone with a mobile phone can sign up for tomorrow's updates:

"If you are interested in getting these updates, please do the following: type 25827 where you would normally type in a telephone number. Then in the text field, type buryprop8 (with no spaces). A member of LAPD's media relations will be sending out the updates, Murphy said.

Mayor names former Rampart Division leader to head LAPD

Deputy Chief Charlie Beck was this morning nominated by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to replace William Bratton as chief of the Los Angeles Police Department. Beck, a 33-year-department veteran, served as captain of the Rampart Division, which covers portions of Echo Park and Silver Lake, in 2003-2005, according to a press release. He was credited with helping carry out reforms at the division in the wake of the Rampart scandal, according to the LA Times.

If the City Council approves Beck's nomination, he is expected to preside at a graduation ceremony at the Los Angeles Police Academy in Elysian Park for a new class of officers, which will include his son, Martin.

Highland Park knife fight victims identified

The LA Weekly said the victims of a weekend knife fight have been identified as Highland Park neighbors Javier Mejia, 43, and Salvador Ayala, 26. One of the men stabbed the other and left the scene in the 100 block of East Avenue 45 at about 3 AM Saturday. A friend of the first victim then apparently avenged his death by finding the man who fled and fatally stabbed him, police said. It's not clear which man was killed first, Detective P.J. Morris told The Eastsider.

Police are still seeking the man responsible for the second fatal stabbing. The men involved in the stabbings were believed to have been drinking heavily when the fatal fight broke out, police said.

"Too much alcohol involved," said Northeast Division Capt. Bill Murphy in an email.

Two Highland Park men stabbed to death following dispute

An argument turned deadly early this morning when two Highland Park men died from stab wounds following a dispute in the 100 block of East Avenue 45, the LAPD said. One of the men who was arguing stabbed the other and left the scene at about 3 AM, according to LAPD spokeswoman Norma Eisenman. A friend of the first victim then located the man who fled and fatally stabbed him, police said. Police are searching for the friend responsible for the second killing, Eisenman said. No description of the suspect was available.

Police impostor robs three victims

Police are searching for a man posing as a police officer who has robbed three victims on the street in neighborhoods near Echo Park, Silver Lake and Koreatown. The suspect, described as a male Latino wearing a badge and gun holster, approached the victims on foot and demanded cash before driving away, said LAPD Dect. Wes Buhrmester with the Rampart Division. "He spoke both English and Spanish, and he used intimidation to obtain cash from the victims," Buhrmester said. "He did not draw the firearm, but it was visible on his belt."

One of the victims was robbed south of Echo Park near Loma Drive and Crown Hill Avenue, a few blocks from Belmont High School. Another robbery was reported in the 800 block of N. Virgil Avenue in East Hollywood near Silver Lake. The third victim was robbed in Koreatown near Irolo and San Marino streets.

"If a citizen thinks a police impersonator is trying to pull them over in a vehicle, drive to a public area before stopping," Buhrmester said. "If late at night, drive to a 24-hour business or a police station. If still in doubt, call the police, and the operator will advise if the person attempting the stop is an officer."

Echo Park & Silver Lake (90026)
A rape on Oct. 19 was reported in the 700 block on Maltman Avenue near Bellevue Park in Silver Lake. Det. West Buhrmester with the Rampart Division said the attacker and victim knew each other. "The victim was not chosen at random, and the suspect is identified. We are in the process of interviewing involved parties at this time." In northern Echo Park and Elysian Heights, five vehicles were broken into. A burglary and aggravated assault were reported in the 1600 block of Mohawk Street.

Lincoln Heights & Montecito Heights (90031)
An aggravated assault and stolen vehicle were reported in the southern half of Elysian Valley. A violent robbery in the 4500 block of Griffin Avenue in Montecito Heights was reported.

El Sereno & Monterey Hills (90032)
A rape was reported on Huntington Drive for the second week in a row. The most recent incident occurred on Oct. 24 in the 4400 block of Huntington Drive. There were also two violent robberies along Eastern Avenue and three burglaries in residential areas.

Boyle Heights (90033)
Three violent robberies were reported on or near Cesar Chavez Avenue. About 10 vehicles were stolen across the neighborhood.

Atwater Village & Silver Lake (90039)
Three personal thefts and a pair of burglaries were reported in Atwater. An aggravated assault was reported on Fargo Street in northern Echo Park

Eagle Rock (90041)
Personal thefts were reported in the 2600 block of Colorado Boulevard and the 7300 block of Figueroa St.

Highland Park (90042)
Two aggravated assaults and two robberies were among the crimes committed.

Trouble blows into Highland Park

A strong gust of wind blew a large canopy into a power lines in Highland Park this afternoon, forcing the closure of the Gold Line and knocking out power to some nearby residents. The large canopy and attached steel tubing dangled in wind at Avenue 51 and Marmion Way next to the Gold Line tracks.

Train service resumed at about 3 PM but Avenue 51 remained blocked off until a utility crew with a boom could arrive to remove the white canopy, said one LAPD officer at the scene. Police and some nearby residents said they didn't know where the canopy had been located. One officer said some of the power lines had to be disconnected.

Solano Canyon family loses $12,000 to criminals posing as DWP workers

A man posing as a Department of Water & Power worker distracted an elderly man and his son in their Solano Canyon home while an accomplice ransacked two bedrooms, making off with more than $12,000 in cash, jewelry and other items, said LAPD Senior Lead officer Ken Lew. The incident took place last Wednesday in the 500 block of Solano Canyon Avenue east of the 110 Freeway. A similar crime took place last month in Angelino Heights, when an elderly couple also fell victim to men posing as utility workers.

In the Solano Canyon case, the elderly homeowner allowed a male Latino who said he was with the DWP inside the house to inspect the plumbing. The suspect, homeowner and the homeowner's son spent several minutes in the kitchen checking pipes. At one point, the DWP imposter spoke into a walkie-talking with another person, possibly the accomplice, Lew said. When the man left, the family discovered that two bedrooms had been ransacked while they were in the kitchen. During the investigation, a neighbor said a male Latino had also asked to enter the home but was turned away.

"This is only an isolated incident - nothing has happened since," Lew said. "My fear is that they will strike again."

He advised residents to ask for identification of anyone claiming they work for the DWP or any other public agency. Residents who want to check the credentials of DWP workers can call the department's security office at (213) 367-3373 or (213) 367-9111.

Eagle Rock fire station evacuated following bomb inspection

Los Angeles Fire Department Station No. 42 was evacuated this morning and a portion of Colorado Boulevard was closed after someone turned in a military-grade smoke bomb into the fire house, according KCBS. The station and street were closed as a precaution while a bomb squad inspected the building in 2000 block of Colorado Boulevard near Shearin Avenue. The station was reopened by about 10 a.m

Rapes and sexual assaults in Boyle Heights, Cypress Park, El Sereno and Lincoln Heights were among the major crimes reported last week. Here are some of the crimes reported during the week of Oct. 12-18 based on information from the LAPD crime map and EveryBlock.com:

Echo Park & Silver Lake (90026)
Most of the crime was vehicle related, with a cluster of thefts reported in Echo Park near Lemoyne and Effie streets and near Academy Road and Morton Avenue (about a dozen thefts from vehicles were reported in both neighborhoods). EveryBlock showed a pair of aggravated assaults on Effie Street in Echo Park. A recent email newsletter from Northeast LAPD Capt. Bill Murphy said officers had recently made arrests in connection with numerous car break-ins in the area.

Lincoln Heights & Montecito Heights (90031)
A rape on Avenue 24 near Broadway and two violent robberies in Lincoln Heights were among the crimes reported. Two thefts from vehicles were reported in Montecito Heights near Avenue 43 and Griffin Avenue.

El Sereno & Monterey Hills (90032)
The Huntington Drive corridor was the scene of several crimes, including a rape in the 5100 block of Huntington (related to a rape in Hazard Park); a burglary; a pair of aggravated assaults; and two thefts from vehicles.

Boyle Heights (90033)
A rape was reported in Hazard Park, with police arresting a man suspected of this and a sexual assault in El Sereno There were also three vehicle break-ins and a personal theft near County-USC Medical Center as well several stolen vehicles reported near Soto and Wabash Avenue. There were four personal thefts in the blocks north of Whittier Boulevard.

Atwater Village & Silver Lake (90039)
A violent robbery and two personal thefts were reported in or near the Costco shopping center in Atwater. Four vehicle break-ins were reported immediately east of the 2 Freeway and two burglaries were reported between the 2 Freeway and Glendale Boulevard.

Eagle Rock (90041)
Several crimes were reported on or near the length Colorado Boulevard, including three thefts from vehicles, a burglary and a trio of personal thefts.

Highland Park (90042)
Three violent robberies, two on Avenue 56 and one on Omaha Street, were reported. About half a dozen vehicles were also reported stolen.

Cypress Park, Glassell Park & Mt. Washington (90065)
A rape was reported in the 600 block of Romulo Street in Cypress Park. In southeast section of Mt. Washington, one vehicle was stolen and three others were broken into.

Police provide more details on Echo Park rape

Last week's Eastside Crime Watch included a report of a rape near Echo Park Lake on the evening of October 7. In response to a request for more information about the crime, LAPD Lt. Wes Buhrmester, a detective in the Rampart Division, said the attacker was not a predator and he knew the victim.

"This was a former boyfriend who was visiting the victim, became drunk, then accosted her," Buhrmester said in a comment to last week's crime story. "It is in the investigative stages. It was not a random victim, and there is no serial or similar type predatory rapist on the loose in Echo Park."

Buhrmester said he did not want to minimize the crime but said it was not a "matter for the general public to fear."

Police chasing suspect in Echo Park *

* Update @ 12:04 AM Monday: LAPD Sgt. Patricia Milewski said officers apprehended the suspect.

A police helicopter hovering over Echo Park tonight is part of a search for a suspect who dropped a gun following an investigation in the 1900 block of Echo Park Avenue, according to an officer at the scene. No shots were fired, the officer said.

Police have blocked off Echo Park Avenue between Effie Street and Duane Street. The search appears focused on the hills to the east of Echo Park Avenue near Lucretia Street.

Morning fire damages Boyle Heights apartment house

The fire broke out shortly before 9 AM in a fourplex apartment building at 2114 E. Fourth Street near Hollenbeck Park, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Firefighters, who reported seeing fire in the attic of the two-story structure, knocked out the blaze in less than half an hour. No injuries were reported.

Lincoln Heights & Montecito Heights (90031)
If the online reports are accurate, there was very little crime reported during the past week with the exception of a burglary in Montecito Heights and a stolen vehicle and personal theft in Lincoln Heights.

El Sereno & Monterey Hills (90032)
Watch your cars: At least 10 vehicles were reported stolen in El Sereno; Monterey Hills had three vehicle break-ins.

Boyle Heights (90033)
A rape was reported Friday night on the 1400 block of Cesar Chavez Avenue near the 10 Freeway. A pair of violent robberies and an aggravated assault were reported northeast of the County USC Medical Center. At least 10 vehicles were stolen across the area, and six personal thefts were reported in the southern part of the neighborhood, roughly between Whittier and Olympic boulevards.

Atwater Village & Silver Lake (90039)
A trio of burglaries reported in Atwater along with several cases of stolen vehicles and vehicle break-ins across Atwater and Silver Lake.

Eagle Rock (90041)
Four personal thefts were reported in the northwest section of the area were among the crimes reported.

Highland Park (90042)

Motorist dies in 110 freeway accident in Highland Park

A woman was pronounced dead at the scene of an accident tonight on the northbound 110 freeway near Avenue 60, the Los Angeles Fire Department said. The woman's car, which according to some reports hit a tree, came close to plunging into the Arroyo Seco, said LAFD spokesman Eric Scott. It was not clear what role tonight's storm played in the accident, which was reported at about 6:45 PM.

Traffic was jammed as the California Highway Patrol closed lanes and declared a Sig-Alert. One Echo Park resident said by email that her vehicle sat in traffic for 45 minutes as she watched rescue workers used the equipment to open up the car involved in the accident.

Meanwhile, on the 5 Freeway, a collapsed crane tied up traffic near Dodger Stadium, according to the LA Times. The CHP lifted a Sig-Alert at about 7:30 PM

The CHP said that as of 8 PM it had received reports of about 700 accidents on Los Angeles County freeways today compared to about 230 incidents reported on the same day last week.

Fighting crime with free bikes and balloons

Can crime fighters throw a good party? Echo Park and Silver Lake residents will be able to judge for themselves this month as the LAPD's Northeast and Rampart divisions, which serve both communities, hold open house events.

The Rampart division, which boasts a new station house on Sixth Street, will host its open house today with tours of the new station, the opportunity to meet officers and recruiters as well as free food (mentioned twice on the flier) and a chance to win kids bikes and gifts.

Northeast, meanwhile, will host its open house next weekend. The aging and cramped Northeast station on San Fernando Road is not much to look at. But what the Northeast station lacks in curb appeal it's officers are trying to make up for in activities, which range from a moonbounce, balloons, free hot dogs for kids and even a DJ.

Police close Highland Park streets following afternoon shooting

An afternoon shooting in the 5300 block of Monte Vista Street in Highland Park prompted the LAPD to block off several streets as they search for suspects. LAPD spokeswoman Rosario Herrera said no one was injured as a result of the 3:30 pm shooting, and officers believe the suspected shooter is still in the area. "There was a shooting but no one is down," she said. Police were still at the scene at about 6:30 pm.

Residents report that Monte Vista Street is closed between avenues 52 and 54. The 90042 blogger repeated Twitter reports of police searching for a suspect armed with a .45 caliber gun.

This afternoon's incident took place near the scene of a Saturday night shooting that left six people injured after the occupants of a car opened fire on a house party. Police said they believe some of the victims were members of the Dogtown gang while the shooters were from the Avenues gang. The Avenues gang was the target of a major police raid on Sept 22.

Highland Park is not as scary as you think - or at least not as scary as Philadelphia

News of a massive police raid against the deadly Avenues gang and shootings that leave half a dozen people injured might leave some Occidental College students reluctant about leaving their tranquil Eagle Rock campus. But a story in the campus paper, the Occidental Weekly, about the gang raids in "neighboring communities" said that students shouldn't fear wandering into nearby Highland Park or Glassell Park. For one thing, an LAPD sergeant told the paper that Oxy students "don't need to worry about being mistaken for gang members."

The Oxy students quoted in the story said their classmates had nothing to fear about Highland Park and offered these observations:

"... because a lot of people come from places that are aesthetically better looking, they think Highland Park is ghetto."

"Compared to Philly, it's pretty darn safe."

No word on how Glassell Park compares to either Highland Park or Philadelphia in terms of safety or aesthetics.

Boyle Heights continued to suffer from several violent robberies while a Saturday night shooting in Highland Park left six injured. Here are some of the major crimes reported during the week of Sept. 28- Oct. 4 based on information from the LAPD crime map and EveryBlock.com:

Echo Park & Silver Lake (90026)
Six personal thefts and two violent robberies were reported in Echo Park. There were also three thefts from vehicles also reported west of Elysian Park. Seven vehicles were stolen across Echo Park and Silver Lake.

Lincoln Heights & Montecito Heights (90031)
Crimes included about a half-dozen personal thefts in Lincoln Heights while a burglary and a stolen vehicle were among the crimes reported in Montecito Heights.

El Sereno & Monterey Hills (90032)
Two violent robberies near the El Sereno Recreation Center and two burglaries on the Pueblo Avenue near Huntington Drive were reported.

Boyle Heights (90033)
Five violent robberies, two on or near Wabash Avenue, were reported as well as two personal thefts near County USC Medical Center. Seven cases of grand theft auto were reported.

Atwater Village & Silver Lake (90039)
A burglary on W. Silver Lake Blvd. near Rowena and two reports of vehicle related crime on Duane Street near the reservoir were among the crimes reported.

Eagle Rock (90041)
Three thefts from vehicles north of Colorado Boulevard and a violent robbery on Hill Street were reported.

Highland Park (90042)
Three stolen vehicles and two burglaries were reported north of York Boulevard. Three personal thefts were reported along Figueroa Street in addition to an aggravated assault at Avenue 54.

Cypress Park, Glassell Park & Mt. Washington (90065)
Cypress Park had three cases of aggravated assaults and two violent robberies. Several stolen vehicles and car break-ins were reported across Glassell Park and Mt. Washington.

Monday morning fire strikes Lincoln Heights home

Firefighters took about half an hour to extinguish the blaze that broke out in a two-story home in the 2100 block of Thomas Street, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. No injuries were reported.

Child struck by car near Echo Park Lake

A child was struck by a car Sunday afternoon near Echo Park Lake, according to residents. Paramedics transported a pedestrian to a hospital after being struck by a vehicle at about 3 pm near Echo Park and Laguna avenues, said a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman. The spokesman said he did not know the age of the pedestrian or the nature of the injuries. However an Echo Park resident who lives near the lake, heard the accident and went down to the scene.

"I just heard it, ran out and saw the boy on the ground," said the resident in an email. "The child's sitting up on the ground with a bunch of people looking angry at the driver."

Six people injured in Highland Park shooting *

The LAPD said that six people were injured in Highland Park Saturday night in what is believed to be a gang related shooting near Avenue 54 and Monte Vista Street. All the victims were in stable condition, LAPD spokesman Gregory Baek said this morning. He said he was not aware of any arrests.

The LA Times reports that the occupants of a car opened fire on a house party. Police said they believe some of the victims were members of the Dogtown gang while the shooters were from the Avenues gang. The Avenues gang was the target of a major police raid on Sept 22.

One Highland Park resident who lives near the shooting scene reported hearing multiple shots at about 10 pm. "Just heard a bunch of gun shots from my window, people screaming," said the resident in an email. "The cops are out in force."
